Health department sounds swine flu alert in Uttarakhand

Nasheman News : An alert has been sounded in Uttarakhand after 11 people died of swine flu in less than one month, mostly in Dehradun, health officials said on Thursday.

“We have issued an alert and are taking all measures that are required in the wake of swine flu cases,” Dr Tara Chand Pant, Director General Health, said here.

Almost one death related to swine flu is being reported after every two days since the first case became known in January.

On Wednesday, a one-year-old child died of H1N1 virus at a private hospital here, raising fresh concern over the rapidly spreading cases in the hill state.

Doctors said though most of the cases were being reported from Dehradun and Haridwar, a couple of people have been affected by the virus in the hill districts of Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag also.

“HIN1 is like a seasonal influenza which can be cured just like cold,” said Dr Pant. However, Dr Pant said in case the patient is affected with weak immune system as in the case of old age or infants or diabetes, then the condition may deteriorate.

A total of 95 samples have been sent for laboratory tests to New Delhi. Till now, nearly 25 cases have been tested positive, of which 11 people are still admitted in various hospitals in the state including Dehradun.

Three others infected with the virus have been discharged after being treated, he said.

“We are fully prepared to deal with the situation. There are a total of 176 isolation beds in different hospitals in the state where patients with the swine flu symptoms can be admitted without delay. Also, we have enough stock of medicines,” Dr Pant said.

He dismissed the suggestion that lack of sample testing facility in Uttarakhand was responsible for delays in treatment leading to higher mortality rate and said the doctors have been advised to prescribe the medicines of swine flu immediately in case of symptoms.

Ahead of R-Day, 9 IS suspects arrested in Maharashtra

Nasheman News : In a swoop ahead of Republic Day, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested nine youths including a 17-year-old boy – who were detained earlier – for alleged links with the Islamic State (IS) terror group and plans to create criminal disturbances in the state, an official said here on Wednesday.

The ATS said during investigations in the past few days, it has recovered certain chemicals, powder, mobile phones, hard disks, mobile SIM cards, acid bottle, and knives from them.

They have been charged under various section of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Bombay Police Act with further probe underway.

The ATS said operations were started by five police teams discreetly for several weeks and from January 13 they started picking up the suspects from Thane’s Mumbra town and in Aurangabad, both with a dominant minority population.

While four were picked up from Mumbra, the remaining five were caught from Aurangabad and have been brought to Mumbai for questioning.

As it became apparent that the group may be planning a strike, the ATS formed a dozen teams and raided several locations in the two districts till Tuesday.

Already on the ATS radar after a tip-off on the suspects passed by the Centre, the sources said the four Mumbra men were reportedly en route to Aurangabad to participate in a seminar organised by a Kerala-based organisation — Popular Front of India (PFI).

On questioning, the ATS got details of five others based in Aurangabad who were also picked up and detained. They are in the age group of 17-28.

The ATS officials claimed to have recovered certain objectionable material on the social media accounts of one of the detainees and now the investigators are scanning the phones, laptops, emails, social network sites and other details of all those detained.

Suspected for being part of IS sleeper cells in the state, the ATS has also carried out raids at over a dozen premises since the past three days.

The operation was the result of the high-alert sounded in the state in preparations for the Republic Day celebrations on Saturday with multiple Central and state agencies coordinating their intel inputs.

Amarinder protests Pakistan move to restrict Kartarpur travel to only Sikhs

January 23, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday protested against Pakistan’s proposal to allow only Sikh pilgrims to visit Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in the neighbouring country.

Pointing out that Sikhism founder, Guru Nanak Dev, was a universal guru revered by followers of all religions, especially Hindus, the Chief Minister urged the Indian government to take up the issue with Islamabad when the latter sends its draft agreement for regulating entry into its territory through the Kartarpur Corridor.

Amarinder Singh said while Islamabad was well within its rights to set terms and conditions relating to its territorial safety and security, it should take into consideration the fact that the first Sikh Guru’s ideology is not confined to Sikhs but is emulated by people of all faiths.

“The Sikh ethos prescribes non-discrimination, with even the concept of langar being caste-less service for all. Gurdwaras are open to all, without religious bias,” the Chief Minister said in a statement here.

“A large number of Hindus in India were ardent followers of Sri Guru Nanak Devji, and it was their cherished dream to visit the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, which was closely associated with the first Sikh Guru,” he pointed out.

“There was for years the tradition of Hindu families converting their eldest sons to Sikhism. The influence of Sikhism in India was so strong that to exclude members of other religions was not something that Pakistan government should even remotely consider.

“To keep such followers out of Kartarpur Sahib just because they were not Sikh was not logical,” he said, urging the Indian government to take up the matter with the Pakistan government on priority.

Citing media reports of the draft agreement being prepared by the Pakistan government on entry through the Kartarpur Corridor, the Chief Minister also objected to the condition of the number of pilgrims proposed by them.

“It is not correct to limit the number of people to 15 in a group. Individual yatris should be permitted,” he said, advocating ‘khulle darshan’ for devotees.

He said that the restriction of 500 pilgrims per day should also not be there, especially in November 2019, when the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev will be celebrated.

The Chief Minister also expressed concern at the reported clause making a passport imperative for travel by pilgrims. “With Punjab’s large rural population having no passports, such a move would deprive them of making the historic pilgrimage.”

The Chief Minister urged the governments of India and Pakistan to sit across the table and thrash out all issues to facilitate smooth and hassle-free travel by pilgrims through the corridor before coming to a formal agreement in this regard.

“Such regressive steps, as were reportedly being considered by the Pakistan government, to control entry through the corridor would negate the positive initiative taken by their government and it is up to the Indian government to resolve all such issues amicably so that the pilgrims get the maximum benefit from the historic decision of the two nations,” Amarinder Singh added.

The Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, located about three kilometres from the international border near the town of Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, is significant for the Sikh community as it is here that Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev spent 18 years of his life and it was his final resting place.

I feel responsible: Karan Johar on Pandya, Rahul row

January 23, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Filmmaker Karan Johar feels “very responsible” about the repercussions that cricketers Hardik Pandya and K.L. Rahul have faced since they made some misogynistic remarks on his chat show but says he has no control over answers that come his way.

Karan, who is currently at the World Economic Forum, spoke about the controversial episode in an interview to ET Now.

He said: “I have to say that I feel very responsible because it was my show and my platform. I invited them as guests, and so the ramifications and the repercussions of the show are my responsibility. I have had so many sleepless nights wondering how can I undo this damage, who is going to listen to me…

“It has now gone into a zone that is beyond my control. I have to say, and I don’t defend myself with it, but the questions I asked the two boys are questions I ask everyone, including women. Even when Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt were there, I asked them those questions.”

Pandya and Rahul faced a lot of flak for their comments on women when they opened up on their personal life on Karan’s celebrity chat show “Koffee With Karan”, aired on Star World.

Karan, who has mostly had Bollywood celebrities as guests on his shows, said: “I have no control about the answers that come my way. And post the show, I have a control room which has about 16-17 girls. The show ‘Koffee With Karan’ is run entirely by women and I am the only man there. None of them came up. Some thought, ‘Oh, he’s wild, he’s crazy, he’s cracked, he’s mad, he said funny things…’ No one came and told me it was inappropriate or that ‘Karan, maybe we should edit it’, and as a result, I didn’t think… I regret what has happened to them (Pandya and Rahul).”

Following the episode, the two cricketers were sent home midway through a three-match ODI series in Australia.

The filmmaker added: “I don’t care about the TRPs… People don’t understand that an English language show is never dependent on its ratings. We are nowhere on the radar of ratings. It was meant to be my show, and I want to say it, it is frivolous, sometimes a completely borderline, ridiculous, irreverent, candid, ‘stop making sense’ is our mantra… That’s the show.

“But I am not saying or justifying the conversation that happened on the episode. I am just saying that perhaps that things were said that crossed the boundaries, and I apologize because it was my platform where it happened. I feel the boys have paid the price for it already.”

Karan also said he will be “conscious about shooting any episode now”.

“I would be worried about asking the kind of questions… I was being edgy, and that’s the vibe of the show.”

Does he think cricketers are off his list now? “I think I am off their list,” he quipped.

CBI books former Air India CMD and others for alleged corruption

January 23, 2019 by Nasheman

Arvind Jadhav, former CMD of Air India Ltd. File

The Central Bureau of Investigation has booked Arvind Jadhav, a former Air India Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD), and others for allegedly promoting an official against rules and also favouring three other subordinates in getting pecuniary advantage.

Those named in the FIR are Mr. Jadhav, L.P. Nakhwa, the then General Manager (Medical Services); Captain A. Kathpalia, the then Additional General Manager (Operations); Captain Amitabh Singh, the then Additional General Manager (Operations); and Captain Rohit Bhasin, the then Additional General Manager (Operations); of Air India, besides unknown officials of the national carrier.

Mr. Jadhav showed “undue favour to Dr. L.P. Nakhwa by promoting her against the rules, including her name in selection panel and also entering into criminal conspiracy with other unknown officers of Air India to favour three selected GMs i.e. Capt. A. Kathpalia, Capt. Amitabh singh and Capt. Rohit Bhasin through which these members were able to get pecuniary advantage”, according to the FIR.

The case has been registered following a preliminary enquiry which was initiated in April last year.

It was alleged that Mr. Jadhav constituted an illegal/irregular promotion panel to recommend suitable candidates for promotions to the post of General Manager (Operations). It was also alleged that though Dr. Nakhwa was not eligible for being member of the said promotion panel, he nominated her.

Man claiming to be doctor dupes woman of ₹21 lakh

A man claiming to be a doctor working in Venezuela allegedly duped a Bengaluru doctor of ₹21.4 lakh in a marriage proposal scam. The woman, Shreedevi G., 36, in her complaint to the Rajarajeshwarinagar police on Monday said she “met” the accused, who had identified himself as Rakesh Kapoor, on an online matrimony portal in October last year.

He claimed he was an NRI from the U.S. working at one St. Anthony’s hospital in Venezuela on contract. Shreedevi spoke to him frequently online and within weeks, Kapoor proposed that they get married. “He told her he would be visiting India for work in November, and would be in Delhi to purchase medical equipment. He promised to come to Bengaluru to finalise the proposal,” said a police officer.

A few days later, Kapoor allegedly called Shreedevi asking for money. He said he had placed an order for medical equipment worth ₹50 lakh with a firm in New Delhi, but the seller needed 10% of the money in advance. He claimed that he was unable to transfer the amount, and asked Shreedevi to help him out. He assured her that he would repay when they would meet in Bengaluru.

As requested, Shreedevi transferred the money to the bank account of the New Delhi firm. Kapoor thanked her for her help, but a week later he called back to say that his November visit had been postponed. He convinced her to transfer some funds to a few bank accounts, claiming that he had made more purchases. He even got his associates to call her under the guise of employees of firms selling medical equipment. Over time, Shreedevi transferred all her savings to various accounts. Once he learned that she had used up all her savings, Kapoor disconnected his phone. Shreedevi made several attempts to contact him, before realising that she had been duped.

The police have taken up a case of cheating against Kapoor and six others, and efforts are on to track them down.

Hindu-Muslim Couple’s Child Legimitate, Has Right Over Father’s Property, Says SC

January 23, 2019 by Nasheman

Child Born Out of Hindu-Muslim Couple's Marriage Legitimate, Can Lay Claim on Father's Property: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court ruled out a marriage between a Muslim man and a Hindu woman to be a regular one but said that children born out of the wedlock are legitimate and will have a claim over the property of their father.

Terming the marriage between a Muslim man and Hindu woman an irregular one, the apex court said, “The marriage of a Muslim man with an idolater or fireworshipper is neither a valid (sahih) nor a void (batil) marriage but is merely an irregular (fasid) marriage. Any child born out of such wedlock (fasid marriage) is entitled to claim a share in his father’s property.”

The top court said, “The position that a marriage between a Hindu woman and Muslim man is merely irregular and the issue from such wedlock is legitimate has also been affirmed by various high courts.”

The bench of Justice N.V. Ramana and Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar in their judgment upheld an order of the trial court and that of the Kerala High Court. Speaking on behalf of the bench and explaining the marriage between the individual of the two communities to be invalid, Justice Shantanagoudar said, “It would not be out of place to emphasise at this juncture that since Hindus are idol worshippers, which includes worship of physical images/ statues through offering of flowers, adornment, etc., it is clear that the marriage of a Hindu female with a Muslim male is not a regular or valid (sahih) marriage, but merely an irregular (fasid) marriage.”

It must be noted that a wife cannot inherit the husband’s property but is entitled to get dower, ruled the Supreme Court. “The legal effect of an irregular marriage is that in the case of consummation, though the wife is entitled to get dower, she is not entitled to inherit the properties of the husband,” said the court.

The SC’s judgement came in lieu of the property dispute matter in which Shamsuddin, the son of Ilias and Valliamma, had sought to inherit the ancestral property after his father’s demise. The top court’s decision came as it upheld the plea by Mohammed Salim. Salim was born to Mohammed Ilias and Valliamma, and court described him as their legitimate child.
