Saudis don’t know where Khashoggi’s body is: Minister

February 11, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  Saudi Arabia does not know where murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s body is, the Kingdom’s Foreign Affairs Minister Adel al-Jubeir has said, despite having in custody the Saudi team that killed him.

In an interview to US’ CBS’ “Face the Nation” show that was broadcast on Sunday, Al-Jubeir said: “The death of Jamal Khashoggi was a mass-massive tragedy. It was a mistake…. committed by officials of the Saudi government acting outside their scope of authority.”

He said that 11 individuals have been charged with the crime and the trials have begun. “We have said we will investigate. We will hold those accountable- those responsible accountable and we will punish them.”

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a supporter-turned-critic of Saudi Prince Mohammad bin Salman, was murdered inside the Kingdom’s consulate in Turkey’s Istanbul on October 2 and his body was reportedly dismembered with a bone saw. His remains are yet to be found.

Al-Jubeir told the US programme that “we don’t know” where is Khashoggi’s body and that the public prosecutor responsible for the case had sought evidence from Turkey but had received no response.

“We are still waiting to receive any evidence they (Turkey) may have.”

On being asked why those in detention can’t reveal where Khashoggi’s body was, Al-Jubeir said: “We are still investigating. We have now a number of possibilities and we’re asking them what they did with the body.

“… I think this investigation is ongoing, and I would expect that eventually we will find the truth.”

The minister again denied the Crown Prince’s involvement in the murder. “Nobody in Saudi Arabia knew about the murder except the people who did it.”

He also dismissed the New York Times’ report detailing how US intelligence intercepted communications of Bin Salman telling a top aide in 2017 that he would “use a bullet” on the journalist if he did not return to the Kingdom.

“This was not a government sanctioned operation. We have an investigation and we have a trial. And many things have been put out that turned out to be incorrect.”

The US’ Central Intelligence Agency has, however, concluded the Saudi operation was likely directed by the Crown Prince.

‘Political obituary’ of Rahul Gandhi written today: Akali Dal leader

February 11, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  A Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader said on Monday that Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s “political obituary” had been written with the launch of his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra into active politics.

“Aaj bhog pai gaya hai Rahul Gandhi ji da (Today, the political obituary of Rahul Gandhi has been written),” Bikram Singh Majithia told the media here while reacting to Priyanka Gandhi’s first roadshow in Lucknow after becoming the General Secretary in charge of East Uttar Pradesh.

Majithia, who is Union Minister for Food Processing Harsimrat Kaur Badal’s younger brother, said that by launching Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress party has itself admitted to the political failure of Rahul Gandhi.

“The Congress has admitted on its own that Rahul is a failure and things are not working (for the party). So they have brought in the sister now. The writing is on the wall for the Congress,” Majithia, a former cabinet minister in Punjab, said.

“It does not matter to us. The Congress can decide who it wants to bring forward. Whether it is Rahul Gandhi or (mother) Sonia Gandhi or (brother-in-law) Robert Vadra, we have nothing to do with this,” he added.

Disappointed Rohit looks ahead to Australia series

February 11, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  Disappointed after losing the Twenty20 International (T20I) series to New Zealand, Indian captain Rohit Sharma praised the hosts for their performance in the third match here on Sunday.

The Kiwis defeated India by four runs in the third and final T20I to take the series 2-1. The hosts had won the first match by 80 runs while India took the second game by seven wickets.

“Pretty disappointing to not get to the finishing line. 210-odd was always going to be tough, and we were in the game right till the end. But New Zealand held their nerve and they deserved to win. We started off well in ODIs, and the boys will be disappointed not getting to the finishing line in the T20s,” Rohit said after the match.

Rohit said that the Indians will have to take their lessons from the defeat and prepare for the upcoming home series against Australia.

“Lots of positives, and a few mistakes. There’s a lot of material to move ahead. It would have been nice to win the series and go home and play Australia. But unfortunately we couldn’t do that,” he said.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, on the other hand, was delighted with his team’s performance and is looking forward to the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh and preparing for the 50-over World Cup later this year.

“What a brilliant advertisement for T20 cricket. It’s great to get across the line tonight. It was a fairly short series. The first performance (first T20I) was our best, and there were some learning in the second one,” he said.

“We knew India would come back strong. For it to go to the last couple of balls with the series on the line, it was a great series to be a part of. We go to the ODIs against Bangladesh. We travel, train and play and that’s the (hectic) nature of international cricket I suppose,” he said.

In Dubai, Pakistan prime minister warns of ‘painful’ reforms

February 11, 2019 by Nasheman

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan said his nation needed “painful” economic reforms to cut back on its debt soon after meeting the head of the IMF.

In a speech at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Sunday, Khan said his government faced a massive fiscal deficit when it took office in 2018 and was making efforts to slash it.

“I repeat the reforms are painful … It’s like a surgery. When you conduct surgery for a while, the patient suffers, but that improves,” Khan said.

“The worst thing that can happen for society is that you keep postponing reforms because of the fear that you would have opposition, the vested interests stand up and you don’t do reforms.”

Pakistan, the IMF and China: Imran Khan’s economic challenges

Before taking the stage, Khan met the head of the IMF Christine Lagarde.

‘Strong package’

Pakistan has about $100bn in external debt and liabilities, according to the State Bank of Pakistan.

“I reiterated that the IMF stands ready to support Pakistan,” a statement from Lagarde said.

“I also highlighted that decisive policies and a strong package of economic reforms would enable Pakistan to restore the resilience of its economy and lay the foundations for stronger and more inclusive growth.”

Pakistan, a regular borrower from the IMF since the 1980s, last received an IMF bailout in 2013 to the tune of $6.6bn.

Forecasts by the IMF and World Bank suggest the Pakistani economy is likely to grow between 4.0 and 4.5 percent for the fiscal year ending June 2019, compared with 5.8 percent growth in the last fiscal year.

The annual World Government Summit sees global leaders cross paths at a luxury hotel near Dubai’s iconic, sail-shaped Burj al-Arab hotel.

Major investments

Two Saudi sources told the AFP news agency that heir apparent to the Gulf kingdom’s throne, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will visit Islamabad soon, without giving a date.

A number of major investment deals are expected to be signed during the visit.

“The outcome of the talks so far has been very positive and this is going to be one of the biggest-ever Saudi investments in Pakistan,” a senior finance ministry official was quoted as saying.

“We hope that an agreement to this effect will be signed during the upcoming visit of the Saudi crown prince to Pakistan,” said the official, requesting anonymity.

The Wall Street Journal reported last month both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Islamabad’s biggest trading partner in the Middle East, have offered Khan some $30bn in investment and loans.

Khan also visited Saudi rivals Qatar and Turkey, as well as China seeking investment in recent weeks.

New Zealand beat India to clinch women’s T20I series 3-0

February 11, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : An all-round show by Sophie Devine helped New Zealand defeat India by two runs to sweep the three match women’s Twenty20 International series here on Sunday.

India required 16 runs off the final over and Mithali Raj needed to hit a four off the final ball but Leigh Kasperek held her nerve to concede just one run, according to the ICC’s website.

A tight 19th over from Devine was as vital, as she conceded just seven runs in their defence of 161/7, as India, despite an entertaining 86 from Smriti Mandhana, finished short on 159/4.

Devine, having made 72 off 52 balls, got the big wickets of Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues to finish with 2/21.

It was Mandhana’s second fifty of the series as well, and her fourth fifty-plus score in the last six matches across formats. Her second wicket partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues set the tone.

They kept the boundaries coming, never letting the required run-rate get out of control, and adjusting well to the constant bowling changes to reach 76 in nine overs.

When Mandhana was finally dismissed, caught by Lea Tahuhu off Devine in the 16th over, the equation was down to 39 needed off 27. However, in the face of tight bowling, it proved too much for India.

The experienced Mithali, recalled to the side to provide some stability in the middle order, did exactly that after the wickets of Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur, adding 24 not out off 20. Deepti Sharma did her bit with 21 not out off 16, including a six, but they couldn’t take their side over the line.

Earlier, opting to bat, New Zealand scored 161/7.

Brief scores: New Zealand 161/7 (Sophie Devine 72; Deepti Sharma 2/28) against India: 159/4 (Smriti Mandhana 86; Sophie Devine 2/21)
