Colombo, Apr 9 (Xinhua) Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center said on Tuesday that the number of people affected by the severe dry weather conditions prevailing across the island country had risen to over 321,000.

The worst affected districts are Vavuniya and Jaffna in the north, Puttalam in the North Western province and Kegalle in the Sabaragamuwa Province.

The Disaster Management Center said the lack of rains, especially in the mountainous areas, had resulted in a severe water shortage.

Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Center Pradeep Kodippili said officials were continuing to send water bowsers into the areas to supply fresh water to the families.

Kodippili said people were also advised to remain cautious and stay indoors due to the extreme weather conditions.

The Meteorology Department, in its latest weather update, said hot weather conditions are likely to rise further in the coming days but temporary showers could also be expected.

Temperatures are expected to rise to as high as 41 degrees Celsius.

MI, KXIP look to continue their winning momentum

April 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Mumbai, Apr 9 : After wining their last IPL matches, both Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will look to continue their winning streak as they face each other in the next match of the ongoing IPL season at Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.

In their last two matches, Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings and SunRisers Hyderabad and will want to continue their winning momentum against KXIP too.

On the other hand, Kings XI Punjab are also high on confidence after defeating SunRisers Hyderabad at home in their last match.

In the previous encounter between the two teams in Mohali, KXIP had a comprehensive eight-wicket win over MI but this time playing at home MI will obviously have an added advantage as they are aware about the ground conditions well.

KXIP are largely dependent on their explosive openers K L Rahul and Chris Gayle. However, the likes of Mayank Agrawal, Sam Curran and Sarfaraz Khan have also performed well, whenever, they got the opportunity to bat.

MI don’t even have a single batsman in the top-20 run scorers’ list of this IPL season but they have a strong batting line-up.

MI are blessed with power-hitters like Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya who can change the fate of the game with their fearless batting in the fag end of the innings.

When it comes to the bowling, MI have a formidable pace attack with Jasprit Bumrah and left-arm Jason Behrendorff , Hardik and leg spinner Rahul Chahar.

Apart from batting, MI’s bowling have been also boosted by the inclusion of West Indian pacer, Alzarri Joseph, who blew away SRH with his record-breaking haul of 6/12 in Hyderabad in his previous game.

In bowling, KXIP skipper Ravichandran Ashwin (7 wickets) has done well in five out of six games that the team has played and has got good support from the likes of Sam Curran, Mohammed Shami and Murugan Ashwin.

Overall, it will be a good contest between two quality sides looking to keep the winning momentum going.
KXIP are placed at third spot in the IPL’s points table with four wins out of their six matches, while MI are placed at fifth spot with three wins out of their five matches so far in the tournament.

The new National coach will be on board by mid-week of May. With the FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualifiers scheduled to kick-off in September, the King’s Cup will help the team get in proper shape for the tough challenges ahead,? he stated.

I am extremely thankful to the Thailand FA for sending us an invitation to play in the tournament.?

The 2018 edition of the King’s Cup was won by Slovakia when they beat Thailand 3-2 in a thriller in the final, while Gabon beat UAE 1-0 to clinch the 3rd place.

Give ‘Nyay’ to Congress, which denied progress for 70 years: Modi

April 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Chitradurga, Karnataka, Apr 9 : Taking a dig at the ‘Nyay’ programme announced by the Congress in its election manifesto, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday gave a call to the electorates of the country to reject the party, which denied people their due for the last 70 years, with its narrow political interests.
Speaking during the ‘Vijaya Sankalpa Yatra’ at this Fort City, Mr Modi alleged that the coalition partners- Congress and Janata Dal (S) in Karnataka shed tears, when the country took strong steps to defeat terrorists backed by Pakistan, as it hurt ‘the voting bank’ of the two parties.
”So, should we not ensure ‘Nyay’ against these elements, who take people of the country for granted and always think of grabbing power only? The two parties will be punished this time, especially when a huge number of youth, born in the 21st century will take a decisive action, who will vote for the first time.
”I appeal to all 18-year-olds (new voters) to either support a strong government that takes the country forward, or choose a government that wants it’s people to remain backward, for its political ends,” he said.
Mr Modi, who visited the city for the second time for campaigning, said he was happy that so many youngsters will get their voting power for the first time, adding that the youth represented the strength of the country.
”Now, a chance has come to your lap to decide whether to support BJP, which stands for ‘Sab ka Saath, Sab ka Vikas’ or those, who depend on their vote banks,” he added.

Showman Subhash Ghai Launches ‘Clean Ganga’ With A Song

After making a short documentary titled Kumbh – The Power Bank which was highly appreciated by the Chief Mminister of Uttar Pradesh in the bygone year of 2018, the Showman Subhash Ghai had got an invitation by Sanskar Bharti as guest of honor to participate at their event at kumbh in Feb, 2019 at Prayagraj.

So Sobhash Ghai during his visit at Kumbh the idea of making a music video on River Gamga struck him. Since many years now Ganges has been under severe pollution & a lot has been spoken about the fact that whether River Ganga is still pure or no.

So when Subhash Ghai thought to conceptualize a music video revolving around River Ganga & its cleanliness issue, then he personally discussed the issue with the directorate of Namami Gange project initiated by PM Narendra Modi. Then he penned down the lyrics, namely “Ghar ghar Ganga jab bhi aaye – Maili ho kar laut na jaye” This also inspired the students of his whistlingwoods music school to compose the score on the lyrics. Within a very short span of time they completed the music in their School’s music studio.

The song was composed by the music students Antara Vaidya & Vaishnavi Sriram with Abhishek Bonthu as programmer. Then Vaishnavi & other students gave the vocals. It was a very proud moment for them when their music video was presented in front of a very large crowd at the Kumbh in the current year of 2019. Although Subhash Ghai had written the full song on clean Ganga the video displays only a mukhra of the song.

The shooting of Clean Ganga is currently on & it is being produced under the banner of Mukta Digital Studios Mumbai, The other details are being worked out.

Musical Round Up

Raju Singh – The Musical Sikh Behind Kesari

It’s always the stars behind stars that make the stars or their films. So while we mostly know about the actors or the songs that get popular, ever wondered who’s responsible for the thrill & the romance or the dhishoom dhishoom that our movies are so known for? It’s the magical works of background music composers.

So while Akshay Kumar starrer Kesari is raking in the moolah with its recent release at the box office turnstiles, there’s one musical Sikh who’s played an instrumental role in the making of this film. We are talking about composer Raju Singh who is known for film background music pieces in Bollywood industry.

Having worked with the filmmaker of Kesari, Anurag Singh in his Punjabi national award winning film, Punjab 1984, Raju Singh has been a great fan of the filmmaker ever since. “I just love the way Anurag Singh works on his films. He is such a versatile director, right from Jatt & Juliet which was a complete commercial entertainer to the serious drama Punjab 1984, Anurag Singh had shown great versatility & more sensibilities of all kinds of cinema. I enjoyed the process of music arrangements even in Kesari,” says Raju Singh while further adding, “Anurag Singh is among those directors that give so much importance to every aspect of filmmaking. I was brought on board & also started working even before the shooting of the film began. Generally, filmmakers shoot a lot of the film & then give it to the composers to piece together the background tracks, however, Anurag Singh wanted this film to be so enriched with the Punjabi culture as it celebrates the bravura of the great Sikh warriors who fought tooth & nail to protect their land, that he wanted me to move along with my work as the shooting progressed. His expectations brought out the best in me & I loved this challenge to bits!”

Clearly the teaming of Raju Singh & Anurag Singh is working wonders, first the national award for Punjab 1984 & now the rave reviews for Kesari!

Ironically, Raju Singh has also been associated with Akshay Kumar’s films & has been a part of Akhay Kumar’s journey in the industry. Right from Akshay Kumar’s debut movie Saugandh to Kesari, Raju Singh has arranged the background pieces for his films, “Coincidentally it’s true that my association with Akshay Kumar goes a long way. In fact I’ve worked in quite a few of Akshay’s films including the likes of Sainik & then his famous Khiladi series & now Kesari! It’s been a great journey,” says Raju Singh.

India stands top in remittance recipients with $75 bln in 2018

April 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Washington, Apr 9 : India topped the chart in remittance recipients as the Indian diaspora have sent 79 billion dollars back home in 2018, the World Bank has said.

India has left behind China (67 billion dollars), Mexico (36 billion dollars), the Philippines (34 billion dollars) and Egypt (29 billion dollars), the World Bank said in its latest Migration and Development Brief report on Monday.

According to the report, remittances grew by more than 14 per cent in India, where a flooding disaster in Kerala likely boosted the financial help that migrants sent to families.

In Pakistan, remittance growth was moderate 7 per cent, due to significant declines in inflows from Saudi Arabia, its largest remittance source. In Bangladesh, remittances showed a brisk uptick in 2018 with 15 per cent.

The Bank estimates that officially recorded annual remittance flows to low- and middle-income countries reached 529 billion dollars in 2018, an increase of 9.6 per cent over the previous record high of 483 billion dollars in 2017.

Global remittances, which include flows to high-income countries, reached 689 billion dollars in 2018, up from 633 billion dollars in 2017.

The report said in 2019, remittance flows to low- and middle-income countries are expected to reach 550 billion dollars, to become their largest source of external financing.

Dilip Ratha, lead author of the Brief and head of KNOMAD, said, ?Remittances are on track to become the largest source of external financing in developing countries. The high costs of money transfers reduce the benefits of migration. Renegotiating exclusive partnerships and letting new players operate through national post offices, banks, and telecommunications companies will increase competition and lower remittance prices.?

Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, Angrez Singh Rana, confirmed the incident and said that army has been called out to prevent violence.

The Personal Security Officer (PSO) took the bullets on himself and died on the spot.

Curfew was clamped in the Kishtwar town on Tuesday when terrorists attacked RSS leader Chandrakant Sharma and killed a policeman on his security duty. Another policeman was critically injured.

Sharma, who received bullet injuries, was being operated at the district hospital at Kishtwar.

Security forces have launched a search operation for those involved in the terror incident.

Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, Angrez Singh Rana, confirmed the incident and said that army has been called out to prevent violence.

This is the first election-related terror attack during the ongoing elections for the Lok Sabha in Jammu and Kashmir. Polling for the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, of which Kishtwar is a segment, is scheduled to be held on 18 April during the second of the 5-phase election in J&K. Minister of state in the PMO, Dr Jitendera Singh, is seeking re-election as BJP candidate.

Reports said that armed terrorists attacked Sharma inside the hospital where he was working as a medical assistant. However, the Personal Security Officer (PSO) took the bullets on himself and died on the spot.

The incident has come a few months after two RSS and BJP leaders, Anil Parihar and Ajit Parihar (both brothers), were gunned down by terrorists in Kishtwar town.

These incidents indicate that terrorists were regrouping in the Kishtwar area that was in the pre-2004 era a hotbed of militancy.
