Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Govardhan Dangi threatened to “burn” BJP MP Pragya Thakur over her comment in parliament seen as against Mahatma Gandhi

'If She Sets Foot...': Congress MLA Warns Pragya Thakur Amid Godse Row

Bhopal

BJP MP Pragya Thakur has been removed a parliamentary consultative committee on defence

A Congress MLA in Madhya Pradesh has threatened to “burn” BJP MP Pragya Thakur for her reported remarks in parliament seen as disrespectful towards Mahatma Gandhi. Ms Thakur has denied her comment in parliament on Thursday was against Mahatma Gandhi.

“If Pragya Thakur sets foot here, we won’t burn her effigy, we will instead burn her,” Congress MLA Govardhan Dangi from Madhya Pradesh’s Biaora told reporters.

Ms Thakur, a first-time MP, said that Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, was a “patriot”, drawing severe criticism from the Congress and even senior BJP leaders like JP Nadda and Rajnath Singh.

The Congress MLA said the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ran several programmes on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and gave message of peace in the country. “But Pragya Thakur is calling an assassin a patriot,” Mr Dangi said.

Ms Thakur made the comment during a discussion on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill. At the time the DMK’s A Raja was speaking and referred to a statement by Nathuram Godse on why he killed Mahatma Gandhi. At around this point, Ms Thakur interrupted Mr Raja with a comment that provoked a furious reaction from the opposition.

“The topic that was discussed was of security and A Raja spoke about deshbhakt Udham Singh. He said Udham Singh nursed a grudge against General Dyer of Jallianwala Bagh massacre for 20 years before killing him. When Raja went on speaking, I interrupted to say he should not take a patriot’s name – deshbhakto ka naam mat lijiye (don’t take the names of patriots),” Pragya Thakur said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Pragya Thakur’s comment was condemnable and she has been removed from a parliamentary consultative committee on defence.

The Congress has demanded that Pragya Thakur resign as MP.

India slams Pakistan at UNHRC over its ‘malicious propaganda’ on Ayodhya verdict

November 29, 2019 by Nasheman

Indian diplomat Vimarsh Aryan said that the world does not need lessons on human rights of minorities from a country whose own citizens have never enjoyed true democracy.

Exercising India's right to reply in response to the statement delivered by Pakistan Indian diplomat Vimarsh Aryan noted that the religious, ethnic, sectarian and linguistic minorities in Pakistan have suffered an immense infringement of their fundamental human rights due to the so-called blasphemy laws.

GENEVA: India on Thursday lambasted Pakistan over its statement at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Supreme Court’s verdict on Ayodhya land dispute case and asked the country to rather work constructively and positively for education and upliftment of its own minorities instead of spewing lies for a self-serving malicious propaganda.

Exercising India’s right to reply in response to the statement delivered by Pakistan at the 12th session of Forum of Minority Issues, Indian diplomat Vimarsh Aryan noted that the religious, ethnic, sectarian and linguistic minorities in Pakistan have suffered an immense infringement of their fundamental human rights due to the so-called blasphemy laws.

“India is a robust democracy where independent and effective constitutional mechanisms are in place to safeguard interests of all our citizens including religious and linguistic minorities and we strongly reject Pakistan’s reference to our judicial decisions

“It is widely known that in Pakistan, the religious, racial, ethnic, sectarian and linguistic minorities have suffered an immense infringement of their fundamental rights due to the so-called blasphemy laws,” he added.

Aryan said that the world does not need lessons on human rights of minorities from a country whose own citizens have never enjoyed true democracy.

“This forum is meant to deliberate upon crucial Human Rights issues of minorities. But instead of adhering of that objective, Pakistan is merely spewing lies of self-serving mendacious propaganda that was evident in its statement which was nothing but a farrago of distortions and misrepresentations,” he said.

Congress expels three leaders for anti-party activities

BENGALURU:  With just eight days to go for the crucial bypolls, Congress seems to be finding it difficult to ensure that its local leaders remain loyal and work for party candidates. In Shivajinagar assembly segment in Bengaluru, two Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) members and a former block Congress president have been expelled from the party, as they were working for the BJP candidate.

MK Gunashekar, BBMP member from Jayamahal ward; Netravati Krishnegowda, BBMP member from Ramaswamypalya ward and former Block Congress president Krishnegowda have been expelled from the primary membership of the party for six years for anti-party activities, read a statement issued by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

Gunashekar admitted that he is campaigning for the BJP candidate in Shivajinagar. “I consulted people in my ward and based on their suggestion, I am campaigning for the BJP candidate, as we need a stable government under the leadership of BS Yediyurappa,” he told The New Indian Express. “I will consult people in my ward and take a decision ,” he said when asked if he is joining the BJP.

Gunashekar also said disqualified Congress legislator R Roshan Baig is also supporting BJP candidate M Saravana. Baig was keen to contest on a BJP ticket, but the party refused to induct him. In the three-way contest, the support of Baig and local Congress leaders is likely to give an edge to the BJP candidate. MLC Rizwan Arshad is the Congress candidate and Tanveer Ahmed is the JDS candidate in Shivajinagar.

Uddhav Thackeray: Rise and rise of the maratha

November 29, 2019 by Nasheman

From a shy, introvert, temperate wildlife photographer to an astute political organizer and now the Chief Minister of Maharashtra – the rise of Uddhav Thackeray is more than impressive.

Uddhav Thackeray

MUMBAI:  From a shy, introvert, temperate wildlife photographer to an astute political organizer and now the Chief Minister of Maharashtra – the rise of Uddhav Thackeray is more than impressive.Engrossed in his hobby of wildlife photography, Uddhav hardly took politics seriously till the mid-nineties. He was handling the responsibility of party mouthpiece, Saamna. Yet, he was aloof from politics. Moreover, due to his cousin Raj, who was the shadow of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray back then, Uddhav remained away from the media’s eye for a long time.

Uddhav is not a great orator like his father. But, he speaks from the heart. Raj had oratory skills like his uncle and was a firebrand. Uddhav was sober. It was a complete mismatch for the Shiv Sena of those days. While the party had its government Raj had started controlling the party to a large extent. It was in the late nineties, when Raj lost some of his clout in the party organization due to Ramesh Kini case, that Uddhav got a chance to come forth.

After the party lost power, Uddhav was made the executive head of the party. He started organising regular meetings of leaders from different regions. Gradually, many aggressive leaders, who believed in muscle power politics, got replaced by moderates.

Before the polls, he started pitching for major share in seat-sharing and the alliance with BJP broke. Uddhav stood against the Modi wave and got 63 MLAs against all odds. Probably that was the moment when he made the promise to himself that he shall have a Sena CM in 2019. That promise has been fulfilled.

Hackers hit OnePlus’ online store again, data leaked

November 25, 2019 by Nasheman

OnePlus suffered a similar security breach in January last year when hackers gained access to the data of nearly 40,000 users.

OnePlus

NEW DELHI: In yet another data breach, Chinese handset maker OnePlus’s online store has been hit by hackers where an “unauthorised party” accessed some customers’ personal information.

The company informed its users on Friday that all payment information, passwords and accounts are safe but the name, contact number, email and shipping address in certain orders may have been exposed.

OnePlus, however, did not disclosed how many users in which parts of the world were affected by the data breach on its website.

“We want to update you that we have discovered that some of our users’ order information was accessed by an unauthorised party,” Ziv C, Staff Member, Security Team, OnePlus, wrote in the company forum.

OnePlus suffered a similar security breach in January last year when hackers gained access to the data of nearly 40,000 users.

According to the smartphone player, the hacker’s entry point this time was a loophole in its website, but did not provide any additional details.

Users who were hit by the breach may receive spam and phishing emails as a result of this incident.

“Before making this public, we informed our impacted users by email. Right now, we are working with the relevant authorities to further investigate this incident,” added Ziv.

The breach happened last week, according to OnePlus’ FAQ page.

“We took immediate steps to stop the intruder and reinforce security, making sure there are no similar vulnerabilities. Before making this public, we informed our impacted users by email. Right now, we are working with the relevant authorities to further investigate this incident,’ said the company.

The company said it has notified all impacted users via email.

“If you don’t get an email from us, rest assured that your order information is safe. However, if you have further concerns, please contact us at Customer Support for assistance,” said OnePlus.

The company said it is partnering with a world-renowned security platform next month and will launch an official bug bounty programme by the end of December.

Hong Kong elections: Pro-democracy camp ‘wins big’

November 25, 2019 by Nasheman

Hong Kong media said Monday that the pro-democracy camp had won a commanding majority of the 452 district council seats at stake, taking control of at least 17 of the city’s 18 district councils.

Supporters of pro-democracy candidate Angus Wong celebrate after he won in district council elections in Hong Kong, early Monday, Nov. 25, 2019. Vote counting was underway in Hong Kong early Monday after a massive turnout in district council elections seen as a barometer of public support for pro-democracy protests that have rocked the semi-autonomous Chinese territory for more than five months.

HONG KONG: The pro-democracy opposition won a resounding victory in Hong Kong elections, according to media tallies, in a clear rebuke to city leader Carrie Lam and her handling of violent protests that have divided the Chinese territory.

Hong Kong media said Monday that the pro-democracy camp had won a commanding majority of the 452 district council seats at stake, taking control of at least 17 of the city’s 18 district councils.

The result of Sunday’s elections could force the central government in Beijing to rethink how to handle the unrest, which is now in its sixth month. The district councils have little power, but the vote became a referendum on public support for the protests.

“It’s nothing short of a revolution. This is a landslide,” said Willy Lam, a political expert at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

“It’s a sound repudiation of the Carrie Lam administration and shows the silent majority are behind the demands of the protesters.”

The media tallies are based on official results for the individual races.

The pro-democracy camp hailed its strong gains in the normally low-key race as a victory for the people. Former Democratic Party chairman Lee Wing-tat said that Carrie Lam should give serious consideration to the demands of the protesters and in particular a call for an independent commission to investigate the events of the past six months.

“It is a genuine referendum of the people of Hong Kong,” he said at a news conference. “The Democratic Party hopes our chief executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, receives the same message because the votes make a clear voice of the Hong Kong people.”

Lam issued a statement saying her government respects the results and will listen to and seriously reflect on the opinions of members of the public.

“There are various analyses and interpretations in the community in relation to the results, and quite a few are of the view that the results reflect people’s dissatisfaction with the current situation and the deep-seated problems in society,” she said.

A record 71% of Hong Kong’s 4.1 million registered voters cast ballots Sunday, well exceeding the 47% turnout in the district council elections four years ago. A large number of votes was slowing down the counting.

The largest pro-Beijing political party suffered a major setback, with at least 155 of its 182 candidates defeated, according to media tallies.

Horace Cheung, the vice-chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, said the loss was the collective responsibility of the party, and that the party would reflect on the outcome to prepare for coming challenges.

Among the losing incumbents was controversial pro-Beijing lawmaker Junius Ho, who was stabbed with a knife while campaigning this month.

The winners included former student leaders and a candidate who replaced activist Joshua Wong, the only person barred from running in the election.

Pro-democracy rally organizer Jimmy Sham, who was beaten by hammer-wielding assailants last month, also triumphed, as did a pro-democracy lawmaker who had part of his ear bitten off by an assailant.

The demonstrations have turned increasingly violent. Protesters have smashed storefronts of businesses seen as sympathetic to China, torched toll booths, shut down a major tunnel and engaged in pitched battles with police, countering tear gas volleys and water cannons with torrents of gasoline bombs.

More than 5,000 people have been arrested in the unrest that has contributed to Hong Kong’s first recession in a decade.

The vote is the only fully democratic one in Hong Kong. Members of the legislature are chosen partly by popular vote and partly by interest groups representing different sectors of society, and the city’s leader is picked by a 1,200-member body that is dominated by supporters of the central government in Beijing.

Dixon Sing, a political science lecturer with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, said the election result was “tantamount to a rejection of the hard-line policy of Beijing and the Hong Kong government.”

A win would give the pro-democracy camp 117 seats in the panel that elects the city’s leader, bolstering its influence, but Beijing isn’t likely to soften its stance or make any concessions to the protesters, he said.
