‘Housefull 4’ movie review: Akshay Kumar steals the show in this problematic comedy of errors

October 28, 2019 by Nasheman

Despite a number of cringe-worthy dialogues in the name of humour appearing intermittently in the movie, the one factor that remains consistently sincere and funny is Akshay Kumar.

Actor Akshay Kumar in the 'Bala' song from 'Housefull 4'.

Is there a point expecting logic, sincerity, and political correctness from the Housefull franchise? Haven’t we learnt anything over the past nine years and three films? The latest instalment sticks to the Housefull template of mounting a comedy of errors on a flimsy premise, which is held together by a series of unending gags, irreverent humour, which more than just borders on the offensive, and Akshay Kumar. After a series of nationalistic movies that saw Akshay champion various causes, he returns to a film that has him getting slapped around, kicked in the nether regions, and even unabashedly rolling in shit, literally. If this latter is courtesy a group of pigs in 1419, it is pigeons who do the needful in 2019.

The film is about three brothers Akshay, Bobby Deol, and Riteish Deshmukh, who are in love with Pooja Hegde, Kriti Sanon, and Kriti Kharbanda, respectively… or are they?

Basically this film is what will happen if SS Rajamouli made Magadheera within the Housefull franchise. Just like Magadheera, Housefull 4 also uses reincarnation and ‘sachcha pyaar’ to sell us an outlandish story, which begins in London, and for the most part, happens in the princely state of Sitamgarh.

What’s Housefull without running gags? There is one involving Riteish Deshmukh, his effeminate characteristics, an unnecessary speech conundrum, and of course, homophobic humour. Then there is an English-speaking Johnny Lever, who later becomes Giggly, the Sitamgarh girlfriend of Akri Pasta (can there be a Housefull franchise without Chunky Pandey going ‘Mamma Mia’), and of course, transphobic humour. There’s yesteryear actor Ranjith, and of course, sexual innuendos aplenty.

The heroines hardly get to say anything except an exasperated “Shut Up” here and a “Yeh kya ho raha hai?” there, and of course, zero character development. There is the random breaking of fourth wall, misplaced pop culture references in the 14th century, and of course, Dharmendra being referenced while talking about Bobby Deol. But again, what do you expect out of a franchise which perennially aims at the low-hanging fruit? Housefull 4 is a worthy addition to the franchise known for its slapstick humour and below-the-belt jokes. Of what worth this franchise is in the first place is a different question altogether.

Despite a number of cringe-worthy dialogues in the name of humour appearing intermittently in the movie, the one factor that remains consistently sincere and funny is Akshay Kumar. While I am not a big fan of Sundi/Sandy from the previous instalment, both the roles in Housefull 4 give enough for the actor to ply his wares, and he does so with considerable elan. As Harry in the 2019 timeline, Akshay plays a man who forgets things when he hears loud noises, a “London ka Ghajini”, and he shoulders the responsibility of the film, almost singlehandedly in the second half.

However, the real show-stealer is Akshay as Rajkumar Bala Dev of Madhavgarh. The actor lets his hair down in the role of a scheming bald prince, whose characterisation is very reminiscent of General Aladeen from The Dictator. Remember the Akshay from films such as Singh is King and Rowdy Rathore? He is back in familiar territory after a prolonged break where he tried to save a lot of things, including the Indian legal system, Indian women, and even the Indian space research.

In between all this, there is Rana Daggubati, whose inclusion also brings in the mandatory Baahubali references. Look out for his present-day avatar, where Rana has the most unlikely profession. Such is the randomness of his profession that the only thing more random than that is the presence of Nawazuddin Siddiqui grooving to an item number along with the entire cast of Housefull 4. Such moments of ingenuity and wackiness manage to balance, albeit temporarily, the outrage the film induces otherwise.

Writing credits of the film are shared by six people, and it really does feel like a classic case of too many cooks spoiling the biriyani. However, the actors, including Riteish and Johnny, ably support Akshay in his endeavour to solve all the confusion by incessant hamming, as does the over-the-top staging.

Some might argue that the presence of this franchise is a farce and not the best thing to have happened to Bollywood. Others believe there is a huge market for such mindless entertainers. Some others are of the opinion that comedy is a subjective thing. To be honest, I related to all these opinions at various points of Housefull 4. Are certain dialogues abysmal? Yes. Is the presence of Sajid Khan’s name in the credits disheartening? Yes. Did I laugh out loud when they break into Soldier Soldier song in 1491? You bet I did! Did I give a half-smile when they decided to rhyme “Exorcism” with… Sonu Nigam? Definitely. So, that brings me to the most important question that came up after watching Housefull 4. Do we need a Housefull 5? Well, as Akshay repeatedly says in this film… I don’t know.

Think tank helped Karnataka put Vijay Hazare Trophy in bank

October 28, 2019 by Nasheman

The management also handed Prateek Jain a debut in the final, against Tamil Nadu, for his left-arm pace instead of a regular in Ronit More; a bold call in a pressure game.

BENGALURU: Karnataka were the standout team in this Vijay Hazare Trophy. After topping a tough combined Group A and B with just one loss, they were invincible in the knockout stages, going on to claim their fourth domestic one-day title on Friday. Devdutt Padikkal (609 runs), KL Rahul (598), Manish Pandey (525), Abhimanyu Mithun (20 wickets) and Prasidh Krishna (17) were their standout performers.

Besides individual brilliance, the team management also played its part with some important decisions during the tournament. One among them was the bold move to play a part-time keeper in the knockout stages despite having a fit keeper in the form of BR Sharath.

Giving Rahul the gloves allowed them to play an extra bowler in the quarterfinal, and an extra batsman in the semifinals and final.

“I always wanted him to keep so that we could play six batsmen and adjust in one all-rounder,” said Pandey. “We were closing in on the knockout phase, so I thought that him keeping would help me get another all-rounder in, or we can play six batsmen and five pure bowlers.”

The management also handed Prateek Jain a debut in the final, against Tamil Nadu, for his left-arm pace instead of a regular in Ronit More; a bold call in a pressure game.

It has to be noted that performances were taken into account while picking the XI. Premier leg spinner Shreyas Gopal, who was not at his impressive best in the tournament, did not find a place in the semifinals and final after unimpressive figures against Puducherry (0/55), Saurashtra (1/52) and Mumbai (1/80). Praveen Dubey, who took three wickets each against Goa and Puducherry, was given the nod.

“The management has been giving chances to different players, who are doing well in all kinds of leagues. If you get a chance to feature for the state (in the XI) and deliver, then it gives players the confidence and drive to do well,” Mithun said.

With Vinay Kumar leaving Karnataka, Mithun was the bowling spearhead, entailing peak fitness as a prerequisite. In eight round-robin games, they rested him for two: against Chhattisgarh and Saurashtra. Mithun took a minimum of one wicket in each of the other six. He was at his menacing best in the final, scalping five that included a hat-trick.

“The team management always wanted to rotate the bowlers as they wanted me and others to be fresh. It was done as there were so many matches to be played,” said Mithun.

No fund shortage for flood rehabilitation, says Yediyurappa

October 28, 2019 by Nasheman

All state BJP leaders including Chief Minster B S Yediyurappa held a meeting in Hubballi on Saturday in connection with the upcoming bypolls.

HUBBALLI: All state BJP leaders including Chief Minster BS Yediyurappa held a meeting in Hubballi on Saturday in connection with the upcoming bypolls. Leaders of the seven constituencies were called to discuss the next course of action. Speaking about flood relief measures, the chief minister said the government had left it to the authorities to take immediate actions to rehabilitate those affected by the flood in the state. “There is no dearth of funds and steps are being taken to give relief to the victims,” he added.

The meeting was organised to take BJP leaders into confidence and check whether the newly-joined leaders from JDS and Congress had any chances of winning. The closed-door meeting was held with the leaders till Saturday evening.

A source from the party said, while a series of meetings had taken place, the names of candidates were yet to be finalised. Earlier in the day, Yediyurappa had told media at the city airport, “Congress leader Siddaramaiah does not know how to talk and what to talk. He should seek apology before the public for criticising the Speaker. If not, people in the state will teach him a lesson.”

“According to the prediction by Mahatma Gandhi, Congress is seeing its down trend. Senior leaders like Siddaramaiah have lost patience after witnessing failure at every point,” the CM added.

Siddaramaiah criticises state govt
Criticising the move of the state government over providing relief funds for flood victims, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “The BJP government is in deep slumber. The recently released election results at Maharashtra and Haryana speaks volumes about the party’s work.”  He also said the padayatra seeking relief funds for flood victims, which will be organised by the Congress, is yet to be finalised.  Replying to a query over D K Shivakumar’s position in the party, he said there were rumours over giving a key position to him.

October 28, 2019 by Nasheman

Gehlot said that an environment of fear, distrust and violence has developed in the country due to which mob lynching incidents are on the rise.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot addresses a press conference at his residence in Jaipur

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday said the entire country is worried about the rise in cases of mob lynching on the suspicion of cattle theft and asserted that such incidents should not happen.

Responding to a question on mob lynching at an event at Hingonia cow shelter here, Gehlot said, “Cow is like mother. Every Hindu considers it as mother. It is our duty to respect the feelings but a religion will neither accept nor teach taking someone’s life on the basis of suspicion.”

He said, “An environment of fear, distrust and violence has developed in the country due to which mob lynching incidents are on the rise. The entire country is worried about it.” Gehlot said that such incidents should stop and that the state government would make all efforts to curb them.

He said that BJP leaders have a duty to give such a message just like Prime Minister Narendra Modi had once said that people engaging in such activities are anti-social elements. “I believe mob lynching incidents will stop if the message is clear from the leaders of BJP, RSS and VHP,” he said.

Kamlesh Tiwari’s wife not satisfied with murder probe

October 28, 2019 by Nasheman

Following Kamlesh Tiwari’s death, Kiran was unanimously appointed the National President of the Hindu Samaj Party floated by her late husband.

LUCKNOW: Kiran Tiwari, the wife of slain Hindu Samaj Party chief Kamlesh Tiwari, has said that she was not satisfied with the investigations into her husband’s murder and demanded an NIA inquiry.

“I am not satisfied with the investigations and I demand an inquiry by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). I will keep Rs 15 lakh ex-gratia given by the government till a BJP leader is killed in similar fashion and will then pool in an equal amount and give Rs 30 lakh to the bereaved family,” she told IANS on Sunday.

“I am highly dissatisfied with the probe. Why is the case not handed over to the NIA? The Uttar Pradesh Police and ATS will not be able to work it out. My husband had spoken to Naka Hindola SHO about the threat to his life a day before he was murdered but he paid no heed.”

Following Kamlesh Tiwari’s death, Kiran was unanimously appointed the National President of the Hindu Samaj Party floated by her late husband.

Comparing the compensation given to her with that given to the victim of the Dadri lynching case, Kiran said: “The Dadri victim as given Rs 50 lakhs and we were given Rs 15 lakhs. Is this a difference in the cost of lives?”

She accused the Uttar Pradesh government of trying to “silence” her with money. “But I will not keep quiet and continue to raise my voice. I will fulfil the dreams of my husband,” Kiran said, adding that the Hindu Samaj Party would now work towards making a Hindu Rashtra and also contest elections.

She said that the state government had also ignored the family’s demand for naming Khurshid Bagh and Kamlesh Bagh and installing a statue of her slain husband.

Kiran said that she would not rest until the “real killers” of her husband were hanged.

“Give me my husband’s killers and I will hang them if the government cannot ensure a death sentence for them,” she said.

She also demanded a Z-plus security cover for the family and raised concerns about the security of lone eyewitness Saurashtrajeet Singh.

“His security is of utmost importance because he is the one who can recognize the killers,” she said.

Kamlesh Tiwari was shot dead inside his office on October 18 and the alleged accused, identified as Ashfaq Hussain, 34, and Moinuddin Khurshid Pathan, 27, were arrested by Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on October 22.

Five more persons have been arrested so far in connection with the case for either conspiracy in the murder or helping the accused.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Hindu Samaj Party, Rajesh Mani Tripathi, has also questioned the investigations.

“Things are not clear yet. The two main suspects actually surrendered and were not arrested as is being claimed,” he alleged.

US welcomes Kartarpur Corridor agreement between Pakistan, India

October 26, 2019 by Nasheman

India and Pakistan on Thursday signed the agreement on the Kartarpur Corridor that will allow Indian pilgrims to undertake a visa-free visit to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib.

Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Alice G Wells

WASHINGTON: The US has welcomed India and Pakistan signing a key agreement to operationalise the landmark Kartarpur Corridor next month, saying the building of people-to-people ties between the two neighbours is “good news”.

India and Pakistan on Thursday signed the agreement on the Kartarpur Corridor that will allow Indian pilgrims to undertake a visa-free visit to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, the shrine of the Sikh religion’s founder Guru Nanak Dev in Pakistan, notwithstanding a chill in bilateral ties over Kashmir.

The agreement will allow 5,000 Indian pilgrims daily to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib where Guru Nanak spent last 18 years of his life.

“Welcome news of a finalised agreement that paves the way for a corridor between India and Pakistan, allowing Sikh pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib,” Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Alice G Wells tweeted on Thursday.

Welcome news of a finalized agreement that paves the way for a corridor between India and Pakistan, allowing Sikh pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib. We look forward to the formal opening in November. Building people-to-people ties between neighbors is good news.

“We look forward to the formal opening in November. Building people-to-people ties between neighbours is good news,” she said.

The corridor will connect the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in India’s Punjab with Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur, just 4 kilometres from the International Border, located at Narowal district of Pakistan’s Punjab province.

The ties touched a new low when India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August following which Pakistan downgraded diplomatic ties and expelled the Indian envoy.

Each visitor would be required to pay USD 20 as fee, though India has requested Pakistan not to charge the Indian pilgrims.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is scheduled to formally inaugurate the Kartarpur Corridor on November 9, ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak on November 12.

Supreme Court reserves verdict on disqualified Karnataka MLAs

October 26, 2019 by Nasheman

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the office of the current Assembly Speaker, submitted that under the Constitution, a lawmaker has a right to resign and the Speaker should accept it.

Supreme Court of India, New Delhi

NEW DELHI: After hearing marathon arguments, the Supreme Court on Friday reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the disqualification of 17 Karnataka MLAs before the trust vote moved by the previous HD Kumaraswamy government.

Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state Congress, said the matter needs to be referred to the Constitution Bench as then Assembly Speaker K R Ramesh Kumar had exercised his powers to disqualify the MLAs and his decision cannot be questioned.

“Eleven people decide to put in their resignation on the same day. Any Speaker would naturally inquire into why 11 MLAs are resigning suddenly,” Sibal contended.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the office of the current Assembly Speaker, submitted that under the Constitution, a lawmaker has a right to resign and the Speaker should accept it.
