Maoists kidnap three TDP leaders in Andhra

Visakhapatnam: Maoists on Tuesday kidnapped three TDP leaders in Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh.

The leaders of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) were abducted in a tribal belt in north coastal Andhra, police said.

They include TDP mandal president M. Balaiah, district executive committee member M. Mahesh and V. Balaiah.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist sent a letter to locals saying the kidnapping were in protest against bauxite mining in the agency area.

The Maoists oppose mining in the region.

The Maoist outfit has called for a week-long shutdown in Andhra-Odisha border area from October 7.

BPO employee gangrape: Two suspects being interrogated

Bengaluru: Two persons were being questioned in connection with the alleged gangrape of a call centre employee in a moving van here.

“We have rounded up two persons and brought them to the Madiwala Police Station where the case has been registered. We are verifying whether they were the ones who allegedly gangraped the call centre woman employee,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohini Katoch Sepat told PTI.

In a reminder of the horrific 2012 gangrape of a paramedical student in Delhi, the woman in her early 20s was waiting to hail an autorickshaw to return to her PG home and boarded the van which stopped by after she was offered a drop.

The woman was allegedly gangraped on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday by the driver and the cleaner. One allegedly raped her in the vehicle and the other in a deserted spot before she was dropped in Madiwala area here from where she was picked up after a three-hour long ordeal.

The woman, who was initially reluctant to lodge a complaint, was persuaded to do so, police said. She was allegedly threatened by the criminal duo that she would be killed if she complained to police.  She was admitted to a hospital on Sunday and discharged yesterday.

Police said they have clues, as they began analysing the CCTV footage at traffic signals along the route taken by the van, which also passed by a police station.

In 2005, a 24-year old employee of a city-based multinational firm was raped and murdered by the cab driver who was later sentenced for life.

Sandalwood star Shivrajkumar hospitalised after mild heart attack

Bengaluru: Kannada superstar Shivrajkumar was on Tuesday rushed to a private hospital here after he complained of chest pain, a source said.

Shivanna, as he’s fondly called by fans, was working out in the gym when he collapsed. He is 54.

“The gym manager informed Shivrajkumar’s wife Geetha, who immediately rushed him to Columbus Hospital here. The doctors reported that he may have suffered a mild heart attack,” a source told IANS.

Shivrajkumar, son of legendary Kannada actor Rajkumar, was later shifted to Mallya Hospital.

“Initial reports revealed that he has two blockages in the artery, and they’re considering performing angioplasty,” the source said.

The source added that Shivrajkumar will be kept under observation in the hospital for the next two days.

The actor has been shooting for Ram Gopal Varma’s bilingual film “Killing Veerappan”.

Bengaluru: Modi woos foreign investors, hopes for GST roll out in 2016

Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said India is a “bright spot” in global economic slowdown and assured foreign investors of favourable business conditions, including strong intellectual property rights protection.

He also said that the government hopes to roll out the Goods and Service Tax (GST) next year.

Renewing government’s commitment to creating favourable conditions for business and industry, Modi said: “Never before is India so well prepared to absorb talent, technology and investment from outside.”

“We have introduced the GST Bill in parliament; we are hopeful to roll it out in 2016,” Modi said at the Indo-German Summit here, sharing the dais with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She is on a three-day visit to the country.

The GST bill is facing hurdles in the opposition dominated Rajya Sabha despite an aggressive push by the government for its passage.

At the Summit attended by the who’s is who of the India Inc, particularly the IT sector, Modi also said India is committed to protecting Intellectual Property Rights of all innovators and entrepreneurs.

A comprehensive National IPR Policy is being finalised, he said, adding that it will be “progressive and forward looking”.

“Such a huge potential for creation and production will not be available in any one country,” the Prime Minister said as he spoke of the slew of steps taken by the government to ensure ease of doing business.

Modi said across the board the validity period of Industrial Licences had been increased and regulatory clearances including security and environmental expedited.

“We have taken very decisive steps to remove a number of long pending concerns of investors,” he said.

Dharamsala: South Africa’s captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and sent India in to bat in the first Twenty20 international in Dharamsala on Friday.

The tourists picked four fast bowlers and one specialist spinner in Imran Tahir on a greenish pitch at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association ground that is expected to assist seam movement.

Sreenath Aravind, a 31-year-old left-arm seamer from Karnataka, will make his international debut for India to partner new-ball bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma.

South Africa are to play three T20s, five one-day internationals and four Tests on the 10-week tour.

FIR against Akbaruddin Owaisi for his speech

Kishanganj: An FIR was today lodged against All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi by Kishanganj district administration for allegedly making inflammatory speech at an election rally here yesterday.

The police are also probing whether damage to idols at two temples in the town, which were discovered this morning, was a fallout of the speech, Superintendent of Police Rajiv Ranjan said.

Owaisi’s speech, he said, violated provisions of section 144 of Crpc and an FIR has been lodged under sections 153A and 188 of IPC at Kochadhaman police station.

Section 153A deals with promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony, while section 188 deals with disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant.

The FIR has been lodged on the basis of magistrate’s report, the SP said. Owaisi had yesterday addressed an election meeting at Sontha haat village under Kochadhaman assembly constituency in Kishanganj district from where AIMIM state unit chief Akhtarul Iman is contesting.

He had allegedly used abusive language against all members of Parliament except his elder brother Asaduddin Owaisi who is AIMIM chief and an MP from Hyderabad. He also allegedly made provocative remarks against BJP leaders.

The police are probing if the damage to idols of goddess Kali in two temples in Nepalgarh locality had any connection to the speech. The SP said idols were found damaged in two adjacent temples this morning and created tension in the town and protests.

District administration sought to maintain peace by talking to people of the two communities, he added.

Bangladesh will return to the ICC Champions Trophy for the first time since 2006 after the eight sides were confirmed for the 2017 tournament, which will be hosted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) from 1 to 18 June.

Bangladesh has replaced the West Indies, which finished outside the top eight in ninth position, in the ICC ODI Team Rankings on the 30 September 2015 cut-off date.

The eight sides to play in the short and sharp, nation-versus-nation ICC Champions Trophy 2017 are (in rankings order): world champion Australia, title holder India, 1998 winner South Africa, 2000 champion New Zealand, 2002 co-winner Sri Lanka, host England, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Bangladesh’s last participation in the ICC Champions Trophy was in India, when it featured in the qualifying round. It lost to Sri Lanka (by 37 runs) and the West Indies (by 10 wickets). Its only victory was against Zimbabwe by 101 runs.

Since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, Bangladesh cricket has been on a high and has produced very strong performances. It won ODI series against Pakistan, India and South Africa, which has helped it jump from ninth to seventh in the ICC ODI Team Rankings.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 will be a 15-match tournament, with teams split into two groups of four, with the top two teams in each group progressing to the semi-finals. The groups and the schedule for the ICC Champions Trophy will be announced in due course.

With the sides for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 now confirmed, the next important qualification date in the diaries of the 12 teams on the ICC ODI Team Rankings will be 30 September 2017.

That is the date when the top eight ranked sides on the ICC ODI Team Rankings will earn direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to be hosted by the ECB. The bottom four sides will get a second chance to complete the 10-team line-up in the ICC Cricket World Cup when they will be joined by teams from the ICC World Cricket League Championship and the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018.

As such, all bilateral ODI cricket in the lead up to 30 September 2017, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, will now have greater importance as only 27 points separate second-ranked India from ninth-ranked West Indies.

Germany expects 1.5 million asylum-seekers, report says

Germany could receive up to 1.5 million asylum-seekers this year, according to a newspaper quoting a confidential document containing estimates that are far higher than publicly released official figures.

Authorities have so far predicted that Europe’s biggest economy would record between 800,000 and one million new arrivals in 2015.

But Bild paper quoted the document saying that the authorities were now expecting to receive 920,000 new arrivals in the coming three months alone, bringing the total number of asylum-seekers this year to 1.5 million.

“The migratory pressure will increase. For the fourth quarter, we expect between 7,000 and 10,000 illegal entries a day,” according to extracts of the document, although Bild did not specify its source.

The document said: “The significant number of asylum-seekers risks becoming an extreme burdenfor the regions and communes.”

The newspaper also quoted the document estimating that each asylum-seeker who successfully obtained refugee status could bring on average “four to eight” family members to Germany.

On the basis of the preliminary forecast of 920,000 refugees, some “7.36 million people” could therefore have the right to move to Germany due to family ties.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has been lauded worldwide for her decision to open Germany’s doors to refugees fleeing war and misery.

But within Germany, her popularity is starting to wane as local authorities struggle to cope with the massive task of hosting the record surge in refugees.

Many of those who come to Germany and other EU state arrive after arduous trips that can involve being on overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean.

Children bodies found

Nearly 3,000 others have died or disappeared during the crossing.

On Sunday, decomposed bodies belonging to a baby, estimated to be 6-12 months old, and a child, about four years old, were found on the shore of the Greek Kos island, on the frontline of the refugee influx coming from Turkey.

According to Greek media reports, authorities believe the children belonged to refugee families trying to reach Kos in a dinghy.

The grim discovery recalls the case of three-year-old Syrian boy Aylan Kurdi whose body was found face down on a Turkish beach last month.

In September, at least 15 babies and children drowned when their overcrowded boat capsized in high winds off the Aegean island of Farmakonisi.

According to a Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung report on Sunday, the EU and Turkey have agreed in principle to a plan of action to help ease the flow of refugees into the bloc.

Under the plan, Turkey would agree to stepped-up efforts to secure its frontier with the EU by taking part in joint patrols with the Greek coastguard in the eastern Aegean Sea coordinated by EU border protection agency Frontex.

Blackmoney disclosure: Govt revises amount higher at Rs 4147cr

New Delhi: Government collected Rs 4,147 crore during the 90-day black money disclosure compliance window, which is higher than the previously announced amount of Rs 3,770 crore, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said today.

Adhia said while the total number of disclosures is 638 as stated last week, the total illegal foreign assets brought to book stands at Rs 4,147 crore.

The government’s total tax receipt from the black money declared during the window will be Rs 2,488.20 crore.

The government had on October 1 declared that a total of Rs 3,770 crore of black money was declared during the compliance window. This, he said, was based on preliminary count of the declarations made.

After taking into account the declarations that came in envelops, the total number comes to Rs 4,147 crore, he said adding the envelops had been counted but the declarations in them were not reflected in the October 1 figure.

The one-time 90-day compliance window provided to holders of undeclared foreign assets ended September 30. It provided an opportunity to foreign assets holders to declared assets, pay a total of 60 per cent tax and penalty and escape stringent provisions of the new black money law.

He said under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), signed with the US, India has already started getting information. “Wealth of information has come from US,” he said. He said as many as 132 prosecution in 43 cases out of the HSBC Swiss list have been filed.

10 Million at risk of hunger due to Climate Change and El Niño, Oxfam Warns

At least ten million of the poorest people face food insecurity in 2015 and 2016 due to extreme weather conditions and the onset of El Niño, Oxfam has reported.

In Oxfam’s new report called Entering Uncharted Waters, erratic weather patterns were noted including high temperatures and droughts, disrupting farming seasons around the world.

Countries are already facing a “major emergency,” said Oxfam, including Ethiopia where 4.5 million people are in need of food assistance due to a drought this year.

Almost three million face hunger in Malawi as a result of erratic rains followed by drought. These conditions have caused a stifling in food production and a rise in food prices.

Christian Aid reported that the production of maize, Malawi’s staple food, has dropped by 30 percent in 2014, while maize prices have risen between 50 and 100 percent.

Central American farmers have been coping with a drought for almost two years, also disrupting its maize production and decreasing access to sufficient food.

Oxfam warns that conditions will worsen due to the incoming El Niño, which could be the “most powerful” since 1997

El Niño is a weather phenomenon where there is periodic, but prolonged warming of the Pacific Ocean. This can last between 9 months to 2 years, producing below-average rains and high temperatures.

El Niño has already reduced the Asian monsoon over India, potentially triggering a prolonged drought and food insecurity in the Eastern region of the continent.

The warming of the oceans, exacerbated by climate change, may double the frequency of the most powerful El Niños, Oxfam says.

The charity urged for preemptive action, pointing to the consequences of failure of response, such as the death of 260,000 during the food crisis in the Horn of Africa in 2011.

Christian Aid has also reported funding deficits in Malawi of over 130 million dollars, hindering support to the worst-affected communities.

“If governments and agencies take immediate action, as some are doing, then major humanitarian emergencies next year can be averted,” Oxfam said in its report.

“Prevention is better than cure,” they continued.

The Oxfam report comes a week after the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which includes commitments to eradicating hunger and addressing climate change.

They described the unfolding crisis as the “first test” for world leaders who will be meeting in December for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris.

“This should serve as a wake-up call for them to agree a global deal to tackle climate change,” said Oxfam Great Britain’s Chief Executive Mark Goldring.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2014 was the hottest year on record. However, global data currently reveal that 2015 may surpass last year in record high temperatures.
