Yadav, Bhushan support Kejriwal in tussle with Delhi Lieutenant Governor

New Delhi: Swaraj Abhiyan, a group formed by ousted AAP leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, came out in support of Delhi dispensation in its tussle with Lt Governor Najeeb Jung over appointments, saying the choice of a democratically elected government should be respected.

It, however, condemned dragging of bureaucracy in the “petty” political fight.

“In principle, Swaraj Abhiyan believes that the choice of a democratically elected government should be respected by Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor. But the politics of personal allegations, brinkmanship and dragging of the bureaucracy into petty political fights is unfortunate.

“Swaraj Abhiyan condemns it and believes that such a culture is not conducive to the health of democracy,” a statement from the group said.

The Delhi government has locked horns in a power tussle with Lt Govenor Najeeb Jung over appointment of Shakuntala Gamlin as acting Chief Secretary, which was opposed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The group also supported the AAP’s stand for full statehood to Delhi.

“Swaraj Abhiyan considers the demand for full statehood to Delhi as a genuine one. Parties like Congress and BJP have been adopting double standards and fooling the people on a critical issue. In the spirit of the democracy and benefit of citizens, we believe that important government decisions should always be taken with the elected government in confidence,” it said.

Swaraj Abhiyan hopes that both the sides show maturity, rise above ego-clash and petty political fights in order to break the deadlock so that the people of Delhi do not have to suffer, it added.

Just before Yadav and Bhushan were ousted from AAP last month, along with Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha, the rebel leaders organised an convention called Swaraj Samvad, which was followed by formation of the group called Swaraj Abhiyan.

Modi asks Korean companies to deepen India ties

Seoul: With several hundred Korean companies already operating in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday invited South Korean companies and asked them to help India achieve the economic success.

“We in India want to achieve a lot of what Korea has already done. That is why I, along with a large business delegation, are here,” Modi said here, addressing the India-Korea CEOs forum.

“The good news is that India-Korea bilateral trade has risen after signing of Korea-India CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, or free trade agreement) in January 2010,” he added.

With hundreds of South Korean companies operating and the Korean investment zone in Rajasthan progressing well, Modi said there was still a lot of scope for further improvement.

“From IT and electronics to automobile and steel, Korea has given exemplary products to the world,” he said.

“Your steel-making capacity and our resources of iron ore can be put together. Your ship-building capacity and our agenda of port led development can become driver of our growth,” Modi added.

He said infrastructure and housing are the other fields where both countries can work together in a big way.

South Korea offered to provide $10 billion for infrastructure projects in India, including smart cities and railways, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with President Park Geun-hye here on Monday and the two countries decided to elevate their ties to a special strategic partnership.

Unable to bear male child, woman kills three minors in Punjab

Kapurthala: A woman was booked for murdering three children, including her two daughters, over a period of two months allegedly under frustration for not being able to bear a male child, police said here today.

Accused Sarabjit Kaur, at village Mand Sarupwala in Sultanpurilodha area near here, murdered her six-year-old daughter by giving her poison and followed the same method to kill her two-year-old daughter also, police said. According to the police, the accused woman has also confessed to killing a relative’s two-year-old son by poisoning him, too, SP Jagjit Soraya said.

Police had registered a criminal case on April 11 against the woman on the complaint of her father-in-law who suspected her of the killings, the SP said adding, following which the post mortem of boy was done and his viscera sent for analysis.

Meanwhile the police also consulted psychologists and other experts and on the findings of post mortem report concluded that the accused had murdered the three kids in a frustration for not being able to bear a male child, he said.

Sultanpurlodhi Deputy SP Devinder Singh, when contacted, said police arrested the accused Sarabjit Kaur and was produced her before the local magistrate who remanded her to two days police custody.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused confessed murdering the three kids and a case under section 302 IPC against her, police said.

Dalit man marries Lingayat girl; father-in-law kills him

Raichur: A lower caste man was allegedly murdered by his wife’s father and relatives at Yermarus, about five km from here for marrying outside caste.

The deceased has been identified as Anand Sagar (28), a native of Yermarus.

According to the police, Anand, who belonged to Uppara community, married Basavarajeshwari, belonging to the Lingayat communtiy, in November 2014 against the wishes of their parents. The couple relocated to Ballari as they faced threats from her parents.

“The girl’s father, Virupakshappa Gowda, and others attacked on Sunday night him with cudgels and stones off Raichur-Hyderabad road at Yermarus. They smashed his head and killed him on the spot. All the accused are absconding. A case has been registered at Raichur rural police station,” Circle Inspector K. Basavaraj said.

A source in the Police Department revealed that Anand Sagar, soon after his marriage, approached the then Raichur Superintendent of Police M.N. Nagaraj and had orally sought his help against the threats.

The police officer had reportedly tried to convince the girl’s parents about the legally-valid marriage and had warned them not to disturb the couple.

Rain plays spoilsport, stop last IPL tie in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Moderate to heavy rain stopped further play on Sunday night between hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils in the last league tie of the IPL-8 at the Chinnaswamy stadium here.

As the 30-minute moderate rain turned into a downpour after 7 p.m. and rain gods did not relent, the two umpires — Kumar Dharmasena of Sri Lanka and Krishnamachari Srinivasan of India — abandoned the match and awarded a point each to both teams.

As the downpour continued relentlessly, the umpires had no option but to call off the match.

With rainwater flooding the ground and preventing resumption of play any more, the frenzied fans who flocked to the stadium in droves for an exciting contest were left disappointed.

When the sky opened up and rain descended, RCB openers Chris Gayle and skipper Virat Kohli ran for cover after playing 1.1 overs and scoring a run each.

Earlier, with dark clouds melting and a drizzle turning into moderate to heavy rain, the umpires stopped play and ordered ground staff to cover the pitch and the open field so that play could be resumed at the earliest.

“Though the match started on time at 4 p.m. and Delhi played its stipulated 20 overs to score 185 for 5 wickets, we were hoping rain gods would spare us rest of the night so that RCB could play 20 overs in chasing the target,” a Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) official told IANS during the interruption.

But just as rain stopped after 30 minutes and ground staff removed covers to resume play at 7 p.m., the rain gods returned with vengeance to pour all over and stop resumption of play further.

With one more point from this abandoned match, RCB gathered 16 points and climbed up to the second spot to play against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the qualifier on May 19 at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, as it was ahead of Rajasthan Royals with 1.037 net run rate against its 0.062.

RCB, which was the finalist in the tournament’s 2009 and 2011 editions, will also get a second chance to enter the final in the event of losing to CSK by playing against the winner of the eliminator on May 22 at Ranchi.

Pakistan army 'caught India by throat' during Kargil war, says Pervez Musharraf

Karachi: Recalling the Kargil conflict, Pakistan’s former military dictator General Pervez Musharraf on Sunday said the Pakistani army “caught India by throat” and that India will never forget the war.

“There was a second line force, too, which caught India by throat and that was later given the status of army,” Musharraf said, addressing a ceremony of his All Pakistan Muslim League (APML).

Musharraf, who masterminded the 1999 Kargil conflict and ruled over Pakistan for nine years, said India will always “remember the battle of Kargil”, the Geo News reported.

“We entered Kargil from four points of which India was not aware,” the former President said, In May 1999, India and Pakistan, in their most serious military engagement since 1971, clashed in Kargil area of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir after militants backed by Pakistani troops occupied the mountain peaks of Kargil.

Speaking on the occasion, the former army chief also announced that his political party will take part in upcoming local bodies election in the country.

Saudi Arabia has reportedly held talks with Pakistan for the purchase of nuclear weapons amid the ongoing nuclear negotiations between world powers and Iran, according to a US senior official who spoke with The Sunday Times.

Tensions in the region have escalated in light of the framework agreement the United States and the other world powers have made with the Islamic Republic, with Saudi Arabia increasingly concerned with the repercussions of a deal that may see the easing of sanctions leaving Iran more legroom to continue developing weapons of mass destruction.

The strain in relations was evident when Saudi Arabia’s King Salman skipped a major summit in Washington this week, along with the leaders of three other Gulf nations.

“For the Saudis the moment has come,” The Sunday Times quoted a former US defense official as saying.

“There has been a long-standing agreement in place with the Pakistanis and the House of Saud has now made the strategic decision to move forward.”

Saudi Arabia is skeptical that any final, comprehensive deal with Iran will curb its nuclear ambitions, with the West’s engagement  having actually “opened the door to nuclear proliferation,” a military source told The Sunday Times

The agreement allows Iran to keep 5,000 uranium enrichment centrifuges at Natanz, and another 1,000 centrifuges at its underground enrichment facility in Fordow.

According to one senior British official who also spoke with The Sunday Times, military leadership from all Western countries “assume the Saudis have made the decision to go nuclear.”

“The fear is that other Middle Eastern powers — Turkey and Egypt — may feel compelled to do the same and we will see a new, even more dangerous, arms race.”

Fresh bombing in Yemen as humanitarian ceasefire ends

Arab coalition nations have resumed air strikes against Houthi fighters in Yemen as a UN envoy called for an extension of a five-day humanitarian ceasefire that expired late Sunday.

The coalition targeted Houthi rebel positions in al-Sawlaban and al-Arish in Aden province, Saudi military officials said early on Monday.

Al-Masirah TV, a Houthi-backed channel, reported that Saudi troops were also shelling al-Manzala district in al-Dalih near the Yemen-Saudi border, in addition to Al-Ghawr mountain.

“I call on all parties to renew their commitment to this truce for five more days at least,” UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said earlier in Riyadh. “This humanitarian truce should turn into a permanent ceasefire.”

His appeal followed clashes between rebels and pro-government forces across south Yemen on Saturday despite the truce, which has largely held since starting on Tuesday at 2000 GMT.

Speaking in Seoul on Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said the US continues to support the idea of a humanitarian ceasefire in Yemen, but that such a truce was difficult given the current circumstances.

The official Saudi Press Agency, meanwhile, reported that the UN envoy met Saudi chief of staff Lieutenant General Abdulrahman bin Saleh al-Bunyan and discussed “humanitarian aid efforts” in Yemen.

Aid groups have called for a lasting truce in the impoverished country, where a Saudi-led regional coalition has waged an air war Houthis and their allies since late March.

Yemeni political parties began talks on Sunday in the Saudi capital aimed at finding a solution to the crisis. But the Houthis stayed away from the meeting of some 400 delegates, including President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who has taken refuge in Riyadh.

Hadi repeated accusations that the rebels had staged a “coup”.

“We are trying to regain our nation” from militias backed by “external” forces, he said in a reference to Iran, which has denied arming the rebels.

An Iranian aid ship bound for Yemen in defiance of US warnings has entered the Gulf of Aden and is expected to dock on Thursday, media in Tehran reported.

Clashes in Aden

Its mission has been overshadowed by US calls for it to head to a UN emergency relief hub in Djibouti instead of the Yemeni port of Hodeida.

Clashes raged overnight Saturday in the central city of Taiz between Houthis – supported by troops loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh – and pro-Hadi forces.

The rebels, who seized Sanaa in September and have since swept across many other regions, bombed a village south of Taiz, killing 14 civilians, a local official said.

Sporadic clashes also continued in Aden, the scene of fierce fighting since rebels advanced on the southern port in late March after Hadi took refuge there.

Aden health chief al-Khader Laswar said four people were killed in clashes Sunday and 39 were wounded, among them two children and four women.

Laswar has said that 517 civilians and pro-Hadi fighters have been killed there in the past 50 days. The toll includes 76 women and children, he said.

Quoted by the government news agency Sabanew.net, Laswar said he could not provide a toll for the rebels.

He added that 3,461 people were wounded, and said most Aden hospitals were currently out of service as “most” medics have fled.

The United Nations has expressed deep concern about the civilian death toll from the bombing as well as the humanitarian impact of an air and sea blockade imposed by the coalition.

It says more than 1,600 people have died in the conflict since late March.

Abdul Nasser Madani arrives in Kerala, says ray of justice now in sight

Kochi: PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, who has been granted permission to visit his ailing mother, reached Kochi on Monday.

Talking to reporters outside the Cochin International Airport, Madani has said the ray of justice is now in sight.

“I’ve hope in the justice. The trial procedures have now picked up pace following the Supreme Court’s directive,” he said.

Madani was arrested on Aug 17, 2010, in connection with the conspiracy in serial bomb blast case.

He was granted bail on July 11, 2014, which was extended by two weeks August 11, 2014 and the same was extended by four months on November 14 as court had given Karnataka four months time to conclude the trial.

While granting bail to Madani on July 11, the court had asked him not to leave the city and furnish to police the address where he would be staying during bail period.

Mumbai brush aside Hyderabad to march into IPL play-offs

Hyderabad: Mumbai Indians produced a clinical bowling display to brush aside the might of Sunrisers Hyderabad, winning by nine wickets in a group stage match to advance to the play-off stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) here on Sunday.

Mumbai clinched the second spot in the standings with 16 points after the group stage with a superior run-rate, joining leaders Chennai Super Kings (18 from 14 matches), ahead of third-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore (16) and four-positioned Rajasthan Royals (16).

Mumbai made their task easier at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in a virtual knockout match when they bowled out Sunrisers for a mere 113 runs.

And then they had no problems in chasing down the small total, with their openers making short work of the task.

West Indian Lendl Simmons (48) and Parthiv Patel (51 not out) showed commendable understanding, mixing caution with aggression, to put together a solid 106-run opening stand that snuffed out any hopes Hyderabad might have harboured to make a match out of it after getting shot out at 113.

Earlier, a superb bowling display from Mumbai Indians enabled them to bowl out Sunrisers Hyderabad for a paltry total of 113 runs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner chose to bat. But their plans of capitalising on a pitch that was full of runs boomeranged spectacularly as they ran into trouble from the very first over of their innings.

Shikhar Dhawan, one of their batting mainstays departed after just 1 run, getting bowled by Sri Lankan pacer of the last ball of the first over, putting an end to his opening partnership with skipper David Warner (6) that has been SRH’s key to big totals in the tournament.

But that was just the beginning of what was a miserable batting performance as they lost their skipper on the very next delivery, caught by West Indian Kieron Pollard off a Mitchell McClenaghan delivery.

With their two best batsmen back in the hut, there was no way out for SRH who succumbed to the pressure losing wickets at regular intervals.

Credit must be given to the entire Mumbai bowling line-up who delivered in unison, keeping up the pressure on SRH batsmen.

They bowled a probing line and length and swiftly reduced SRH to 51 for five inside 10 overs with Hyderabad’s other two dependable foreign imports, England’s Eoin MOrgan (9) and Australia’s Moises Henriques (11) also back in the pavilion.

That broke the backbone of SRH’s batting. Any Hyderabad’s hopes of posting a strong total went up in smoke and they stomped and stumbled to 113.

Mumbai’s opening pacers Malinga (4/17) and McClenaghan (3/16) were spectacular. They bowled in tandem and struck crucial blows to their opponents.

Their good work was carried on by the slower bowlers, spearheaded by Harbhajan Singh (3/18).
