IPL 2015: Chennai Super Kings beat Delhi Daredevils by one run in last-ball thriller

April 10, 2015 by Nasheman

csk-team

Chennai: Hosts Chennai Super Kings defeated Delhi Daredevils by one run in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Thursday.

Chasing a 151-run target, Delhi Daredevils, led by a valiant innings from South African Albie Morkel (73 not out), came within inches of wining the contest. Requiring a six off the last ball, the left-handed batsman just managed to score a boundary to lose agonisingly by a run.

Daredevils run chase began on a wrong note, losing three quick wickets. Veteran pacer Asish Nehra (3/25) rocked their chase, grabbing the first three wickets as his intelligent bowling forced the Delhi batsmen into playing poor strokes.

But Delhi recoverd from the blows due to some sensible batting from Morkel and Kedar Yadav (20). Together they put on a 48-run fourth wicket stand to steady the Daredevils innings and keep them in contention.

But Yadav’s dismissal in the 14th over brought this year’s IPL’s most expensive man Yuvraj singh (9) into the crease – only to perish soon after miscuing a pull shot.

From there, Daredevils’ hope rested on Morkel’s shoulders. He carried his team to the brink of a win. But in the end the burly all-rounder just couldn’t pull off a morale-boosting victory for the team that finished bottom of the heap last season.

Earlier, CSK posted 150/7 after Daredevils opted to bowl after winning the toss.

Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s (30) and his Indian teammate Ravichandran Ashwin (12 not out) guided the team to the modest total after the home team struggled to force the pace throughtout their innings.

CSK’s hope for a strong start got an early jolt when New Zealand’s World Cup hero Brendon McCullum (4) was dismissed in the second over.

Newly-married India batsman Suresh Raina (4) also didn’t last long.

Some tight bowling by the Daredevils kept the Chennai batsman on a tight leash. CSK’s desperation to break the shackles got the better of them and after reaching their 100 in the 13th over, they lost wickets at regular intervals.

South African Faf du Plessis’ (32) dismissal triggered the downslide. His untimely dismissal, coupled with opener Dwayne Smith’s (34) in the ninth over, meant that CSK’s batting momentum was broken.

Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 150/7 (Dwayne Smith 34, Faf du Plessis 32; Natha Coultir Nile 3/30, J.P Duminy 1/15), Delhi Daredevils 149/9 (Albie Morkel 73 not out, K. Yadav 20; Asish Nehra 3/25, Dwayne Bravo 1/19).

Reign in the trigger-happy police force in Andhra and Telangana – statement by JTSA

April 9, 2015 by Nasheman

fake_encounter

by Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Association

JTSA condemns the killing of over 20 woodcutters in the Seshachalam forests and the 5 under-trials in Nalagonda (Telangana). In the first case, reports are already emerging that 7 of those killed, were taken in police custody a day before the encounter. This, along with other details such as bullet injuries on the chest, head and face, contradict the police version of the events. The scale of this violence is unprecedented and suggests how entrenched the culture of impunity is in the state police.

The photographic and video evidence emerging from the police van in which five undertrials – alleged terrorists – were killed by the police party, which was escorting them from Warangal jail to a court in Hyderabad strongly suggests this to be a case of cold-blooded execution in custody. The arms on the dead bodies of these five men – with their hands handcuffed to the seats of the police vehicle – appear to be clearly planted in order to ‘dress’ this up as an exchange of fire. Is it a mere coincidence that the judgment in the case of these five men was due to be pronounced soon?

All efforts must be made to ensure that the post mortem reports and other evidence such as ballistics and the clothes worn by the deceased in both the cases are secured and not tampered with. Time-bound high level judicial probes must be conducted into both the killings. Simultaneously, cases of unnatural death must be filed immediately and special public prosecutors appointed in consultation with the families to prosecute the policemen who participated in the massacres.

The media must follow these cases right through to their logical end in the fixing of accountability and not be satisfied with merely reporting the events as they have taken place.

However, the recent judgment on Hashimpura reveals the problems germane to doing justice to victims of encounters and custodial violence, that are near rampant. While the judgment does not deny the incident of 42 Muslim men being killed in cold blood by the PAC, there were no convictions because of the extremely weak nature of the evidence put forward by the prosecution. There is a need for a clear mechanism whereby either the prosecution or investigating agencies can themselves be held accountable. In heinous crimes such as cold-blooded massacres, how can there be no means to ensure that the investigating agencies and prosecution do their duty in fixing responsibility? Unless such a procedure or mechanism is evolved, justice will always elude the mechanical and cynical application of laws.

Iran links signing nuclear deal to lifting of sanctions

by Al Jazeera

Iran’s president says his country will not sign on to a final nuclear deal with world powers unless it is predicated on the lifting of economic sanctions imposed on Iran over the nuclear programme.

Hassan Rouhani said on Thursday at a ceremony in Tehran that “all economic sanctions must be lifted immediately” once the deal is implemented.

He spoke during a ceremony marking Iran’s Nuclear Technology Day, which celebrates the country’s nuclear achievements.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stopped short of condoning the deal, saying he was “neither for nor against” it, in a statement published on his personal website.

Iran and six world powers reached a framework agreement last week aimed at keeping Iran from being able to develop a nuclear weapon. The deal is to be finalised by the end of June.

It is meant to curb Iran’s bomb-capable technology while giving Iran quick access to bank accounts, oil markets and financial assets blocked by international sanctions.

Rouhani also called for an end to air strikes in Yemen by Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies, saying they could not succeed, and said countries in the region should work towards a political solution.

“A great nation like Yemen will not submit to bombing. Come, let us all think about ending war. Let us think about a ceasefire,” Rouhani said.

Saudi Arabia and a coalition that includes four other Gulf Arab states have carried out air strikes against the Iran-allied Houthi group for the past two weeks to try to drive them back from the southern city of Aden.

“Let us prepare to bring Yemenis to the negotiating table to make decisions about their future. … Let us accept that the future of Yemen will be in the hands of the people of Yemen, not anyone else,” Rouhani said.

Coalition countries say they are supporting Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi against an attempted coup by the Houthis and accuse Iran of arming the group, a charge Iran denies.

John Kerry, US secretary of state, and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE’s foreign minister, both accused Iran of meddling in Yemen on Wednesday.

BJP appeals to governor not to clear proposed ordinance to trifurcate Bengaluru

April 9, 2015 by Nasheman

vidhana soudha

Bengaluru: Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today petitioned Governor Vajubhai Vala requesting him not to approve the proposed ordinance by the government to trifurcate the city and to advise it to hold Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections as directed by the High Court.

BJP leaders led by Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and Former Deputy Chief Minister R Ashoka, former Ministers Suresh Kumar, Somanna and Arvind Limbavali among others, marched to the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum to the Governor.

The JDS, led by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, also staged a protest in the city opposing the state government’s move to trifurcate Bengaluru City.

“We understand that the state government is contemplating trifurcation of Bangalore City by issuing an ordinance before the BBMP elections that are due after its dissolution on April 21. The Bangalore city BJP unit strongly condemns the state government’s cavalier approach and its unilateral decision to impose their writ against the wishes of people of Bangalore,” BJP in its memorandum said.

Flaying the ‘haste’ at which the state government was going about on the issue, BJP informed the Governor that the three member committee formed under the Chairmanship of B S Patil (former Chief Secretary) is yet to submit its final report but the state cabinet has approved the trifurcation after hurriedly obtaining an interim report from the panel.

Questioning the state cabinet’s decision to split BBMP into three corporations citing efficient administration and governance, the BJP said it was being done with an ulterior motive to postpone the BBMP elections scheduled for May.

The Karnataka High Court has passed orders to ensure that the BBMP polls are conducted before May 30, 2015, BJP in its memorandum said, adding, that the ordinance route was only aimed at creating legal hurdles for the elections.

Swami accused of sexually assaulting a school teacher; remanded in judicial custody

April 9, 2015 by Nasheman

Sevalal Swami

Davangere: Banjara Samaj Gurupeeth seer Sardar Sevalal Sanganabasava Swami who is accused of sexually assaulting a woman has been sent to one-day judicial custody by First Additional Sessions Court Judge Vishwanath B Suryavamshi on Wednesday.

The hearing was adjourned till Thursday. The court, however, granted bail to the mother of the seer, one of the accused in the case.

On Tuesday, the judge had issued a non-bailable warrant against the seer after he failed to appear in person during the last three hearings in connection with the case. A police team led by CPI Pampapathy, PSI Nagamma and staff executed the warrant by arresting the seer from a devotee’s house in the city and produced him before the court on Wednesday.

The seer was accused of having sex with a woman for eight years, promising to marry her and later betraying her.

The victim, a city-based schoolteacher, had lodged a complaint with the Davangere women’s police station on June 26, 2013, charging the seer with sexually assaulting her. She accused mother and sister of the seer of aiding and abetting the seer.

On April 4, the victim filed another complaint at the women’s police station stating that the seer, attired in plain white clothes, visited her house and pleaded with her to not appear before the court for hearing on April 7. The victim furnished the photos to the police, showing the seer in plain clothes at her house.

Meanwhile, Banjara community leader and Davangere APMC president Raghavendra Naik has said that the community has distanced itself from the Sanganabasava Swami and that he was never accepted as the pontiff of Sevalal Gurupeeth.

India defeat Canada 5-3 in Azlan Shah

April 9, 2015 by Nasheman

india-hockey-azlan-shah

Ipoh: The Indian hockey team finally managed their first win of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, defeating Canada 5-3 at the Azlan Shah Stadium here on Thursday.

The first quarter saw fights for ball possession but India grabbed their opportunities to open their account. Drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh made full use of his penalty corner chance and converted in the 13th minute. Canada earned two penalty corners but failed to capitalise on them.

Making some swift moves, India earned another penalty corner but wasted it as Rupinder hit the ball way above the net.

With the change of sides and just two minutes into the third quarter, V.R. Raghunath converted a penalty corner (32nd minute) to double the lead.

By this time Canada started making some desperate attempts and their efforts finally bore fruit when Oliver Scholfield (43rd) scored.

The last quarter rained goals. Within two minutes of the restart, India extended their lead to 4-1 as Ramandeep Singh scored a brace (46th, 47th). Canada bounced back when Jagdish Gill converted a penalty corner in the 49th minute.

Only a few seconds later, India retaliated with Satbir Singh scoring a field goal. Canada added another goal to their tally as David Jameson made no mistake in netting the ball in the 52nd minute.

With both the teams unable to add any further goals, India won 5-3.

India, who are already out of the title race, will play their final league match against reigning World Champions Australia on Saturday.

They had earlier drawn 2-2 against South Korea, lost 1-2 to New Zealand and gone down 2-3 to Malaysia.

SC rejects Yakub Memon's plea for review of his death sentence

April 9, 2015 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the plea by 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast mastermind Yaqub Abdul Razak Memon for a review of his death sentence.

Memon had sought the recall of March 21, 2013, apex court order upholding his death sentence by the special court.

The apex court bench of Justice Anil R. Dave, Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice Kurian Joseph in its order said the review plea is dismissed. The court had reserved its verdict March 25, 2015.

This is the second time that Memon’s plea for review of the verdict awarding him death sentence has been dismissed.

Memon’s plea for the recall of his death sentence verdict was rejected earlier too, but it was taken up once again as the Constitution bench by its September 2, 2014, judgment said that review pleas in death sentence cases would be heard in the open court by a bench of three judges.

The Constitution bench also ruled: ‘It will also apply where a review petition is already dismissed but the death is not executed so far. In such cases, the petitioners can apply for the reopening of their review petition within one month from the date of this judgment.’

The apex court on June 2, 2014, suspended the execution of the death sentence which was further extended on September 26, 2014, after it issued notice to the Maharashtra government on Memon’s petition for an open court hearing of his plea for the review of the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding his death sentence.

Knights trounce Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets at IPL opener

April 9, 2015 by Nasheman

KKR

Kolkata: Powered by an enterprising half century from skipper Gautam Gambhir and a cameo from Surya Yadav, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders trounced Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in the eighth IPL opener at the Eden Gardens here on Wednesday.

Young gun Yadav (46 not out; 20b, 1×4, 5×6) and big hitting Yusuf Pathan (14; 12b, 1×4, 1×6) took KKR to a winning 170/3 with nine balls to spare as Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma’s elegant unbeaten 98 went in vain.

The visitors had notched up 170/3 earlier in the evening before a 50,000-plus crowd at the giant colosseum.

Yadav and Pathan were involved in a rollicking 49-run stand of only 25 balls to kick start the Knights’ title defence with a bang.

Replying to Mumbai Indians’ formidable innings, KKR had a faltering start losing last year’s top scorer Robin Uthappa (9) with only 13 on the board in the third over.

The dashing opener had scored an incredible 660 runs to pilot the Knights to their second IPL crown last year.

But the gutsy Gambhir joined hands with young gun Manish Pandey to take the advantage away from the Mumbai side.

Pandey, who enjoyed a reprieve, was aggressive from the outset, while Gambhir started off cautiously, and then came up with some scintillating strokes.

The 85-run partnership was broken in the 12th over when Pandey (40; 24b, 2×4, 3×6) perished to a catch attempting a slog-sweep.

Gambhir (57; 43b, 7×4, 1×6) rode on three dropped chances, to race to his 50 in the 14th over. He, however, departed in the next over.

Needing 38 runs from the last four overs, Surya Yadav took the hosts closer to victory hitting three lusty sixes of Jasprit Bumrah to make the chase a run-a-ball affair.

Fittingly, it was Yadav who hit the winning runs with an elegant boundary through the extra cover off Vinay Kumar.

Earlier, riding on a brilliant unbeaten 98 by skipper Rohit Sharma, Mumbai scored a formidable 168/3 after put in to bat first.

In trouble at 37/3 inside the sixth over, Mumbai Indians took the battle into the opposition’s camp with the elegant Rohit (65b, 12×4, 4×6) stitching an unbeaten 131-run partnership with Corey Anderson (55; 41b, 4×4, 3×6).

Continuing his good run at the hallowed stadium where he had scored a record shattering 264 while playing for India in November, Rohit was at his elegant best hitting boundaries at will.

With the duo of Anderson and Rohit upping the ante the pressure on the hosts was evident as they spilled three catches. The visitors clobbered 88 in the last six overs to set the Knights a challenging asking rate of 8.45.

The Knights’ trump card Sunil Narine, bowling with a remodelled action, was wicketless conceding 28 in his four overs.

South African pacer Morne Morkel was pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/18.

Pakistan court suspends Lakhvi's detention; orders his release

April 9, 2015 by Nasheman

Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi

Lahore: A Pakistani court today suspended the Punjab government’s detention order against 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind and LeT operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi under a public security act and ordered his immediate release.

Justice Muhammad Anwarul Haq of Lahore High Court suspended the detention of 55-year-old Lakhvi under Maintenance of Public Order after the government failed to present sensitive records against him in the court.

The judge ordered Lakhvi to submit two surety bonds worth Rs 1 million each for his release.

“The law officer had submitted important information about Lakhvi, but the court did not accept this and declared the evidence unsatisfactory,” an official of LHC told PTI.

Justice Muhammad Anwarul Haq on the last hearing on April 7 had directed the government’s counsel to submit record of secret documents about activities of Lakhvi today.

Lakhvi had challenged the March 14 order of Punjab government’s District Coordination Officer, Okara to detain him for 30 days.

Lakhvi’s counsel Raja Rizwan Abbasi argued that after the LHC’s earlier direction he had filed a representation before the Punjab home secretary against his “illegal” detention but the home secretary dismissed it and upheld the 30-day detention order issued by District Coordination Officer, Okara.

Abbasi pleaded that a person could not be detained beyond 90 days without obtaining an order from review board and the detention period of his client had gone beyond 90 days.

A provincial review board comprises judges of the high court. He pointed out that trial court had released Lakhvi on bail in December 2014, however, District Magistrate of Islamabad issued detention order against him.

Later, Islamabad High Court set aside Lakhvi’s detention and ordered the government to release him.

However, another detention order was issued by the DCO Okara and he was not released, the counsel argued.

He had pleaded the court to strike down the impugned order and order the government to release Lakhvi.

India had earlier strongly reacted to the IHC’s ruling on March 13, saying the overwhelming evidence against Lakhvi has not been presented properly before court by Pakistani agencies.

Lakhvi and six others – Abdul Wajid, Mazhar Iqbal, Hamad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jameel Riaz, Jamil Ahmed and Younis Anjum – have been charged with planning and executing the Mumbai attack in November, 2008 that left 166 people dead.

Lakhvi, believed to be a close relative of LeT founder and Jamat-Ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed, was arrested in December 2008 and was indicted along with the six others on November 25, 2009 in connection with the 26/11 attack case.

The trial has been underway since 2009.
