CLASH OF THE TITANS ON THE BOX OFFICE CASH COUNTERS, THIS DIWALI

October 18, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

shivaay

Diwali 2016 is just round the corner and once again there will be a warfare at the Box Office turnstiles between the 2 big releases namely Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay, in which he acts & also directs, and above all Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which had undergone a spate of controversies recently due to the literal ban on the Pakistani actors which was imposed by none other than the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPPA). So much so that one of Karan Johar’s hero namely Fawad Khan had to run back to his own home ground for all that he was worth.

Normally, in the previous Diwali’s, such Clash of the Titans was usually between 2 Super Stars like say Shahrukh Khan & Salman Khan, to give just one example of a Star jodi, who really craved attention from the Box Office Goddess. But this Diwali the Clash of the Titans involve an actor – director Ajay Devgn (Shivaay) & a filmmaker Karan Johar (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil). And who wins the Box office race only time will tell. So let’s keep our fingers, toes & hearts crossed and let the best man, in this case Ajay Devgn & Karan Johar, win the Box Office turnstiles match.

And now as we all know this Diwali we have 2 big releases, obviously one is Shivaay which is the most ambitious project of Ajay Devgn and another is Ae Dil Hai Mushkil which is also a big offering from Dharma Production.

And even before the release of both the films, everyone has their “eyes” focused on both the films as well as the makers of both the films as they both are also facing bad comments or reactions from everyone including each other.

Actually speaking the dates clashes has started like a battle ground these days and more especially for acquiring the release dates of the most prestigious Indian film festivals. That apart our actors have started making great efforts like anything. And in their efforts they also end up spoiling their individual relations and also their relationship with each other.

And this so called warfare situations keep occuring whenever there are 3 big holidays like Diwali, Christmas & Ramzan Eid. So If any of the films gets released on these holidays the results are normally & fairly good on the Box office turnstiles. Sometimes these films really hits the Bull’s Eye and also turn out to be runaway Blockbuster hits. And because the Box Office collections of these festivals are extremely good, the actors also gain huge commercial value.

In last few years, most of the films were good and hence Salman Khan, Shahrukh & Aamir Khan also garnered a huge commercial value more than what they had gained previously. But everyone should understand one thing that these clashes are bound to happen more in future. So all the concerned parties, especially in future, will have to plan out the releases of their films keeping all these factual aspects in their mind. In fact they should formulate concrete strategic plans in future to gain more & more profits for all the movies which will be set for release on these particular holidays of Diwali, Christmas & Ramzan Eid.

In conclusion we would say that Instead of indecent behavior & feeling bad for each other we should also welcome all the films positively and wish good luck for all of them. Because this is sure that in the future not only their would be 2, 3, 4 but even more releases on these festive days. So we should all be prepared for that and plan the strategy in such a way that all the films should do good business.

So this Diwali let’s welcome and enjoy a grand Box Office success for both the Diwali releases; namely Shivaay & Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Here’s wishing Best of Luck to Ajay Devgn & Karan Johar for their respective film’s Diwali release.

Movie Review: ‘Saat Uchakkey’ is an outrageously funny situational comedy movie

October 18, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

saat-uchakkey

Producers: Wave Cinemas & Crouching Tiger
Director: Sanjeev Sharma
Star Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Aditi Sharma, Aparshakti Khurana, Nitin Bhasin, Vipul Vig, Jatin Sarna, Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Vijay Raaz & Kay Kay Menon
Music: Bapi Tutul, Abhishek Ray, Jaidev Kumar, Vivek Kar, Saket, Niranjan & Sanjoy Chaudhary

In the history of Bollywood, rarely has a debutant director ever garnered so much praise for his directorial debut film. And this rare debutant director is none other than. Sanjeev Sharma who makes his directorial debut with a quirky & funniest to the hilt film namely Saat Uchakkey.

The scripted scenario of Saat Uchakkey reveals that it is a situational comedy about 7 losers in life, but who just like anybody else, wants to get rich quick. So Saat Uchakkey kicks off with the introduction of Bichhi (Annu Kapoor), who is a hypnosis expert, who manages to escape from a mental asylum and sets himself free in the world where also exists Pappi (Manoj Bajpayee) & his lady love Sona (Aditi Sharma). In order to win over Sona & her concerned mother, Pappi tries his hand at many things to make quick money, but, somehow success eludes him every time. One day, while eating snacks at a roadside stall, he overhears a discussion about the hidden treasure inside the mansion of the eternally gun wielding old man Diwan (Anupam Kher). In no time, Pappi gathers his team consisting of Sona, Khappe (Aparshakti Khurana) & Haggu (Nitin Bhasin), who, then, join hands with Jaggi (Vijay Raaz) and his gang Ajji (Vipul Vig) & Babbe (Jatin Sarna). As a part of the masterplan, Pappi fakes his death after being shot by Jaggi, so that the righteous police inspector Tejpal (Kay Kay Menon) will never be able to suspect him after Diwan’s hidden treasure is stolen. Amidst all this, it is also revealed that the police inspector Tejpal is madly in love with Sona and wishes to marry her at any cost.

Debutant director Sanjeev Sharma already seems to have proved that he is indeed a director par excellence and being a writer and an actor are his plus points to keep the cine goer’s hooked & glued to their seats.
But the subject he has chosen may be interestingly entertaining but its highly explosive lingo laced with colorful expletives galore may certainly not go down well with the niche audiences of the multiplex category. But for the common audiences of the interior’s single theatres it will prove to be a delight. That apart all its behind the scenes man like Sandeep Saket & Sanjeev Sharma (screenplay), Sanjeev Sharma again (dialogues), Bapi Tutul, Abhishek Ray, Jaidev Kumar, Vivek Kar, Saket, Niranjan & Sanjoy Chaudhary (all for music), John Jacob Payyapalli (cinematography) & Shree Narayan Singh (editing) deserve a left handed complement for excelling in their respective arenas.

Performance wise all the actors right from
Manoj Bajpayee, Aditi Sharma, Aparshakti Khurana, Nitin Bhasin, Vipul Vig, Jatin Sarna, Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Vijay Raaz to Kay Kay Menon are in two words “simply brilliant” and there are just no two ways about it.

Tail Piece: All said & done Saat Uchakkey is an outrageously funny situational comedy which will leave the audiences in splits even in the darkened aisles of the auditorium and they will carry forward this joi de vivre spirit even after leaving the theatres. So guys don’t miss this opportunity to get entertained to your hearts content.

Movie Review: Beiimaan Love does a full on “beiimaani” with the audiences

October 18, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

beiimaan

Producer: Rajeev Chaudhari
Director: Rajeev Chaudhari
Star Cast: Rajniesh Dugal, Sunny Leone, Yuvraj Singh, Rajiv Verma, Avtar Gill et al
Music: Ankit Tiwari, Kanika Kapoor, Raghav Sachar, Sanjeev Darshan, Asad Khan, Asees & Aniruddha Kale

What happens when a media guy jumps the fence and willingly enters into the arena of filmmaking? Naturally the expectations from him rises sky high. One such media guy is none other than a media coordinator turned a filmmaker namely Rajeev Chaudhari, who had earlier made his directorial debut film namely Gunah. In his 2nd directorial outing Beiiman Love, released this week, he has committed one more “Gunah” of offering nothing new in Beiimaan Love.

The scripted scenario of Beiimaan Love is a story of 2 lovers, both having their own hidden agendas against each other. The film’s flashback states that, after Sunaina Verma (Sunny Leone) gets insulted & blamed by her boss K. K. Malhotra (Rajiv Verma), she plans to take a revenge against him and his empire. She, then, with the help of Monish (Yuvraj Singh) sets on the financial demolition spree of K. K. Industries, which is owned by K. K. Malhotra. On the other hand, K. K. Malhotra’s son Raj Malhotra (Rajniesh Duggal) lays a bet with Monish for a mere one rupee that he will have Sunaina as his girlfriend, after Sunaina slaps him publicly. In order to win the bet, Raj pretends to fall in love with her and makes her fall for him. But, gradually, he starts developing real feelings for Sunaina, who, simultaneously goes all out to finish of K. K. Industries. On the day of the engagement of Raj & Sunaina, K. K. Malhotra discovers a harsh reality about Sunaina’s mother’s past, which leads to the engagement getting called off. This hurts Sunaina’s mother so much that she commits suicide. Meanwhile, K. K. Malhotra’s “richie – rich” best friend Amarnath Kapoor (Avtar Gill) strikes a deal with him stating that, in exchange of Raj marrying his, untamed & wild daughter, he will make K. K. Industries totally debt free and back the business. Immediately after Raj’s engagement with Amarnath Kapoor’s daughter, Raj sees something very unsavoury about his would – be wife. Shattered to the core, he hits the bottle and goes back to Sunaina.

Sadly enough everything seems to have gone wrong for director Rajeev Chaudhari, in his 2nd directorial film Beiimaan Love, right from the word go. There is not even a single redeeming factor in Beiimaan Love for which he can at least earn one Brownie point. I wish I could rest my case at this juncture.

Performance wise it is Rajniesh Dugal & Sunny Leone who try their best to rise above the cliched & totally disoriented albeit routinely scripted scenario. Of course in case of Rajneish Dugal too, the script plays the villain by not allowing him to do anything out of the box. While the other senior cast members too have enacted their respective roles in a terrible manner which does nothing but tests the audience’s patience.

Tail Piece: Rajeev Chaudhari’s Beiimaan Love does a full on “beiimaani” with the audiences. So don’t you even dare to go anywhere near a theatre screening Beiimaan Love.

‘Delhi Mere Baap Ki’ has its own merits and is also enjoyable to some extent

October 18, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

delhi-mere-baap-ki

Banner: Shashiraj Films & Canam Movie Production
Producers: MIke Verma & Shashi Pal (Shashi Raaj)
Director; Shashi Pal (Shashi Raaj)
Star Cast: Gurtej Teji, Tina Rathod, Komal Dillon, Pooja Thakur, Shakti Kapoor, Dinesh Hingoo, Vikram Jhakar, Amritpal Kaur, Gurmail Gill, Santosh Kumari, Pallu, Aman Soni, Vicky, Anju, Ravi Sarin et al
Music: W. G. Records

The scripted scenario of Delhi Mere Baap Ki kick starts with the introduction of a rich spoilt brat (Gurtej Teji ) of a leading business man from Delhi (Shakti Kapoor) who befriends a young model (Tina Rathod) and ends up raping her. He is not afraid of the consequences as he feels that his influential father will bail him out of the mess he has created with his life. But a press reporter (Komal Dhillon) who was her best friend finds the incident fishy as she thinks the reported suicide of her friend could not be true and she does a sting operation. She is helped by her friend (Pooja Thakur) in this mission. Komal Dhillon manages to trap the guy who now tries to rape her but she makes a great escape from his clutches and her honor is saved. Ultimately, the father (Shakti Kapoor) shoots his own son.

It seems like director Shashi Raaj has made Delhi Mere Baap Ki on a shoestring budget. The film has been well – scripted, based on a true incident & interestingly directed by him. Musically, the dance number is very enjoyable. A word of praise also goes for Pali & Ravi for action, Rajesh Kanoujia for cinematography & Amit Raj for editing.

Performance wise surprisingly it is Komal Dhillon who steals the limelight with an extremely sensitive enactment of a great friend who solves her dead friend’s case. Next in line Pooja Thakur is perfect in the role alloted to her. But on the other hand Tina Rathod disappoints big time and the same can be said about Gurtej Teji. While the supporting cast comprising of veterans like Shakti Kapoor, Dinesh Hingoo, Vikram Jhakar et al and debtant actors like Amritpal Kaur, Gurmail Gill, Santosh Kumari, Pallu, Aman Soni, Vicky, Anju, Ravi Sarin et al who are mostly new talents from Mike Verma’s Canam Film Institute (Chandigarh) are just about ok.

Tail Piece: At the Box Office turnstiles Delhi Mere Baap Ki has its own merits but will attract the masses mainly from the B & the C centres, especially from the North.

“I am extremely happy that Shivaay has been made in India:” Ajay Devgn

October 18, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Ajay Devgn has earned quite a name & fame as an actor par excellence. But he has now donned a directorial hat with his 1st ever directorial venture titled Shivaay and witnessing its 1st ever promo it seems more like an espionage thriller directed with all his sincerity. Caught up with Ajay Devgan recently to share his 1st ever directorial experience in a suburban 5 star hotel’s ambiance. Tune in!

shivaay

The trailer of Shivaay were out recently and the entire plot of Shivaay seems to be hidden in it. What say?

Yes you are right and I did that on purpose. I really want the cine goer’s to register their footfalls in a theatre and unravel the entire mystery of Shivaay and I certainly do not want them to take refuge in all forms of pirated versions. Actually speaking Shivaay is a highly emotional drama of a father & his daughter’s relationship. The cine goer’s will really find Shivaay very interesting!!!

By the way how do you balance action & comedy?

There is more of a drama in Shivaay. There is not even an iota of comic sequences in Shivaay. It borders purely on emotional drama.

You had earlier done Drishyam which was purely a family film with no comic relief at all. Comment!

But still Drishyam had proved to be an interesting & an enlightening film. I had done Drishyam purely based on its script. Yet Shivaay is a totally different kind of a film. It has been made totally based on the relationship shared by a daughter & her father.

Why have you given the title Shivaay for your 1st ever directorial venture?

The name of my character is Shivaay but it is certainly not a religious film. And Lord Shiva is one God who easily connects with one & all, I mean people of today’s times also. Lord Shiva is also known as Bhola Bhandari. He is also known to create havoc if need be. Besides his characteristic’s are also evident in people of today’s generation.

How much importance do you give to a film critic?

Sorry to say but in today’s times every Tom, Dick & Harry has become a film critic thereby spoiling the reputation of genuine film critics. I think whoever genuinely wants to step into this “Critic”al arena, should first of all get themselves properly trained.

It seems Shivaay is also appearing as a popular comic strip. Right?

After seeing Shivaay’s trailer one of the Company gave me the idea to convert it into a comic strip. I liked the concept and gave them my nod of approval. But believe me the film’s scripted scenario is totally different from the film’s original theme.

What would you like to say about the action sequences of Shivaay?

The action sequences are totally different albeit very well connected to the emotional sequences. I have tried to treat the action sequences as realistically as possible. My main aim was to bring real Hollywood action sequences in front of everyone and which was never before attempted in Hindi Cinema. I had full confidence in my action technicians. It was very difficult indeed but finally we have succeed in presenting what we had aimed for.

How are you planning to release the film?

Shivaay will also be released in the international markets like Germany & Bulgaria. I have also received a request message from China. In fact I am so happy that Shivaay has been made in India.

By the way is this film inspired by any Hollywood film?

No, no not at all. The story of Shivaay is totally different & totally Indian.

But indeed there are foreign actors in Shivaay?

Yes! You are right. But we had to bow down to the demands of the script otherwise there is no dearth of good actors in Bollywood. It took me almost one and half years to zero down on those foreign actors but in the end I am happy that I got the best of the actors from the foreign soil.

You were also unwell during the course of the shooting of. Shivaay.

Yes I was and I am still unwell. I had almost broken my neck but I thank God – The Almighty that I was saved in the nick of the time but as they say that the show must go on and I also wanted to release Shivaay as soon as possible.

Do you think that this year Diwali will be very special for you?

I really don’t know about that. But I am sure of one thing that God – The Almighty has always been very favorable to me. And I think this year too he will shower his blessings on me.

What would you like to say about the recent ban imposed on the Pakistani actors?

To be very honest I really like the Pakistani actors. I have worked with most of them and they have also worked with most of us. But sometimes the circumstances are such that we have to first think about are country’s honor. We also have to think about the families of our Soldiers who risk or sometimes even sacrifice their lives for us. It is at such times that we should take our stand for our Country’s sake. Our country should be held above everything else. Even Akshay Kumar says that. We should always support our people. Hence no cultural exchange can take place under such circumstances.

How do you look at your success at this stage of your career?

I still feel that I have a long, long way to go. Even otherwise one should keep on maintaining one’s hunger for success.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is also getting released along with Shivaay. Do you think that both the films have got the right number of theatres?

Yes! Both the films have got the right amount of theatres. Now let the audiences see the film and make their own decIsions.

I don’t think you belong to any camp. Comment.

I don’t think the camp system exists anymore. Even otherwise I believe in a simple policy that you don’t interfere in my work and I want interfere in your work.

Review: Motu Patlu King Of Kings is an entertaining Fare for one & all

October 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

motu-patlu-king-of-kings

Producers: Kethan Mehta, Deepa Sahi & Anish J S Menta.
Director: Suhus D. Kadav.
Narrator: Niraj Vikram, Suhab S. Kadav & Dheeraj Berry.
Genre: Animaton Comedy
Rating***

The title of the movie Motu Patlu King of Kings is taken from the kids cartoon show Motu Patlu, which is on air since the year 2008 on Tamil channel. It has now been converted into a movie story and the makers have made it more unique by animating the movie. Besides adding a tagline to the movie as well namely, “Yaaron Ki Yaari…. Action Safari”.

This is a story of 2 friends Motu & Patlu hailing from Furfuri Nagar. Their 1st enconter is with a Circus lion, who wants to leave the Circus. So Motu & Patlu offer to take him to the forest. Once they reach the forest the lion runs away on his own. Motu & Patlu now come across another lookalike lion who rules the jungle as a king. There is also an evil man who cuts down the forest in his quest for a hidden goldmine. From this point onwards there is an uproar in the jungle, literally!!! There are situation and how Motu & Patlu land on them is hilarious. In the end they always rescue themselves with their ideas & their unique thinking.

Director Suhus D. Kadav has done full justice to this Children’s entertainment but with a slight hangover of Hollywood film The Jungle Book. The main message of the film “Save The Forest” is perfectly driven home. Technically also the film is far more superior than previous such films especially the voice overs which are perfectly in sync.

An ideal entertainment for one and all during this festive season of Diwali.

Movie Review: Ghanta is a cliched fare in all respects

October 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

ghanta-marathi-movie

Producer: Vinay Waman Ganu
Director: Shailesh Shankar Kale
Star Cast: Aroh Velankar, Amey Wagh, Saksham Kulkarni, Shivani Surve, Anuja Sathe, Kishor Kadam, Pushkar Shrotri, Viju Khote, Murli Sharma, Bhau Kadam, Kanchan Pagare, Vijay kadam, Ganesh Mayekar, Mayur Khandge etc
Genre: Comedy
Rating One and a half

Ghanta is a story about 3 friends, who have just passed out from college and try their hands in betting to earn money. Further on the film showcases about how the trio of them get into big time trouble because of betting and also comes across 3 Villains in their life and from there on they constantly struggle to get out of this uncalled for situation.

Director Shailesh Shankar Kale has presented a very far fetched and totally confused story and moreover the title Ghanta has no relevance at all to the main plot.

Performance wise most of the debutant actors have tried their level best to live up to their alloted roles. Besides even the veteran actors have failed to salvage the film.

Even at the Box Office turnstiles the prospects of Ghanta seems nil.

Movie Review: Anna: Kisan Baburao Hazare is an enlightening fare

October 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

anna-hazare

Producers: Manindra Jain, Shobhit Kumar,
Shekhar Kumar, Uddipt Jain & Aniruddha Gaikar
Director: Shashank Udapurkar
Star Cast: Shashank Udapurkar, Tanishaa Mukerji, Govind Namdeo, Rajit Kapur, Sharat Saxena, Kishor Kadam etc
Genre: Biopic
Rating***

Anna: Kisan Baburao Hazare is a biographical film based on the life of an extremely popular Indian social activist namely Anna Hazare (Shashank Udapurkar). It encompasses Anna’s life right from his childhood till recently. Anna was a crusader par excellence and followed Mahatma Gandhi’s idealogy. Like Bapu he also chose the path of “Fast Unto Death” to win many social causes. He not only fought for the upliftment of his village in general but also for the betterment of the nation in particular. His fight against “Brashtar” is still going strong.

Director Shashank Udapurkar has brilliantly sketched the life of Anna Hazare. Besides he has done a perfect job by also enacting the role of Anna Hazare. But the lapses are seen in his writing with many loopholes which is evident in the slowly dragging pace of the movie. A special worthy mention should also go for the musical score by the Late Ravindra Jain which is apt for such biographical film. The rest of the cast is also good by lending an able support in carrying the narrative of the film forward.

But sadly enough one can’t expect the film to create wonders at the Box Office tunrstiles. Having said that it will certainly earn rave reviews & critical acclaim in the Indian as well as the global film festival circuit.

Movie Review: Prem Sankat is an interesting love story

October 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

prem-sankat

Producer: Diksha Yuvraj Surwade
Director: Datta Mirkutte
Star Cast : Raj Surwade, Monalisa Bagal, Rahul Bhise, Ankita Parmar, Damini Dolas, Rajendra Shisatkar, Yatin Karyekar, Latika Gore, Rohini, Satish Pulekar, Nishigandha Wad
Genre: Romantic Thriller
Rating**

The story of Prem Sankat kick starts with Raj (debutant Raj Surwade) painting the town red with his friends. On the other hand Mona (Monalisa Bagal) gets kidnapped by the goons of a pimp to be drawn into flesh trade. Raj has seen her being kidnapped! So one fine day he ends up rescuing her from the clutches of the pimp and keeps her hidden in a farm house and gradually falls in love with her.

First of all a word of praise for the Debutant director for presenting the love story in a daringly different mileu but his directorial treatment of the same leaves much to be desired. Debutant Raj Surwade & Monalisa Bagal show just a little spark of histrionics but both have miles to go before they can even succeed in making a place for themselves in Marathi Cinema.

Whereas veteran actors like Rajendra Shisatkar, Yatin Karyekar, Latika Gore, Rohini, Satish Pulekar, Nishigandha Wad lend them an able support.

At the ticket window Prem Sankat will have to struggle hard with not much help coming in even from the word of mouth publicity.

The Indian film industry is one of the most significant influencers in Indian society. Oxfam India aims to encourage & recognize professional filmmakers who make cinema, which promotes positive gender norms and inspires people for a future where violence against women & girls no longer exists. This is only open to Indian films programmed at the festival.”

Filmmaker Karan Johar averred, “We are also thrilled to announce a special award this year called the MAMI MasterCard “Best Indian Female Filmmaker 2016 award”. This award for 15 lakhs rupees is also for Indian films only. This award aims to strengthen the female voice in Indian cinema. Over the last 5 years, we’ve made some progress here but it’s much too little. The representation of both genders onscreen can only benefit with the inclusion of more female voices. This award is a step towards that.”

The Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star is an inclusive movie feast. We showcase the latest cutting-edge, independent cinema – art house fare alongside genre movies from Bollywood & Hollywood & also cult international movies. We offer the best of world cinema to the people of Mumbai and we offer the best of Indian cinema to the world. The festival is run by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image popularly known as MAMI. This is a space where we revel in the sheer pleasure of cinema, the joy it gives us and how much it enhances our lives. The goal is to nurture and ignite a passion for movies. We want Jio MAMI to be shorthand for excellence in cinema.

The financial capital of India is also the epicentre of the Indian film industry. The city plays such a major role in production & dissemination of Indian films & television programs that it is widely known by its acronym “Bollywood”. In 1997, a group of film industry stalwarts headed by late Hrishikesh Mukherjee founded the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) as a not-for-profit Trust. Their main objective was to organise an annual International Film Festival which the film industry and the country could be proud of. MAMI has been organising the festival for the last 16 years and aims to foster a climate of good cinema. MAMI engages people from all walks of life across the city & country that enjoy & love good cinema. It is Mumbai’s only film festival that is entirely created and run by film professionals and a group of members from corporate India. Appreciation of good cinema, stripped off all the limiting labels of art & commercial, can only come about through exposure to the best of films the world has to offer. The Festival is the 1st step in that direction.

In their Mission Statement in 1997, the MAMI Board of Trustees had averred, “We feel it is the need of the hour to disseminate & inculcate good cinema amongst the Indian audiences. The only way to achieve this is to celebrate cinema by hosting an International Film Festival in Mumbai, India’s film & entertainment capital. MAMI (Mumbai Academy of Moving Image) is committed to start Mumbai’s 1st independent international film festival organized by practicing film makers.”
