Congress backs triple talaq, says will scrap law after winning Lok Sabha polls

February 7, 2019 by Nasheman

The triple talaq bill continues to face resistance in Rajya Sabha.

The Congress will scrap the triple talaq law if it forms the government in 2019, the party’s women’s wing chief Sushmita Dev said on Thursday.

Addressing the Congress’ Minority Department convention here, Dev alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had created an atmosphere pitting Muslim women against Muslim men through the triple talaq law.

“A lot of people told us that women will be empowered if the triple talaq bill is passed. But we opposed that law because it is a weapon that Narendra Modi ji has prepared to put Muslim men in jail and make them stand in police stations,” the All India Mahila Congress chief said.

She hailed Muslim women from all parts of the country for writing “crores of letters, carrying out signature campaigns and rebelling against” the law.

“The Congress party stood up and opposed it in Parliament. I promise you people that the Congress government will come in 2019 and we will scrap this law. But it is also certain that whatever law is brought for women’s empowerment, by whichever government, the Congress will support it,” Dev said.

In December last year, a fresh bill to make the practice of triple talaq among Muslims a penal offence was introduced in Lok Sabha to replace an ordinance issued in September.

Under the proposed law, giving instant triple talaq will be illegal and void and will attract a jail term of three years for the husband.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 superseded an earlier bill passed in the Lok Sabha and pending in the Rajya Sabha.

The earlier bill was approved by the Lower House. Amid opposition by some parties in the Upper House, the government cleared some amendments, including introduction of a provision of bail, to make it more palatable.

As the bill continued to face resistance in Rajya Sabha, the government issued an ordinance in September, incorporating amendments.

The ordinance was re-promulgated recently as the first one was about to expire.

The government has maintained that despite the Supreme Court striking down the practice of talaq-e-biddat (instant triple talaq) as unconstitutional, men were divorcing their wives on flimsy grounds and even via WhatsApp.

The opposition has said divorce cannot be made a penal offence and the provisions of the bill are against basic principles of the Constitution.

Has the Khan triumvirate lost its hold on the box office

February 2, 2019 by Nasheman

Array

[NASHEMAN NEWS] If you were one of the three Khan superstars in Bollywood, then 2018 was definitely not your year. While Shah Rukh Khan has delivered what looks like a box office debacle in “Zero”, quite recently his Khan fellow-superstar Aamir Khan too came up with one of the biggest duds of his career, “The Thugs Of Hindostan”.

Earlier during the year, Salman Khan’s “Race 3” underperformed abysmally at the box office.

Is the Khan triumvirate losing its touch?

Says trade analyst Amod Mehra: “The writing is very clear on the wall. It is time all three Khan superstars switched to more mature roles. Or else they would no longer be superstars.”

However, film and trade analyst Girish Johar doesn’t see the setbacks of 2018 as detrimental to the Khans’ careers. “The three Khans are SUPERSTARS, a film here or there doesn’t matter. Their fan following does not decrease nor does their stardom get affected. Yes, all three failing together in one year does raise eyebrows but I am sure they are bound to bounce back with their next outings. Also yes, they have to be much much more careful as audiences are growing, their taste patterns are changing faster…so what they bring to the table has to be extraordinary as anything below neither suits their stature nor is it any longer expected from them.”

What next for the Khans?

While Salman Khan has the eagerly-awaited Eid release “Bharat” which spans the lifestory of one man from India’s independence in 1947 to present day, Aamir Khan is taking a sabbatical from the big screen to do a web series based on the Mahabharat. Shah Rukh Khan is not committed to any new project.

All three Khan superstars need to sit and do some serious career thinking and revamping. Their fan-following remains intact. Only their selection of roles needs to change.

Warns critic Raja Sen: “Their films may have underperformed this time, but each of the three Khans is just one hit away from being on top of the heap again. Any obituaries or celebrations by gleeful rivals would be premature.”

NCP demands ban on Hindu group for insulting Mahatma Gandhi

January 31, 2019 by Nasheman

Hop in for a free ride with

Nasheman News :  The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday staged a silent protest to condemn the insult meted out to Mahatma Gandhi by activists of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha in Aligarh on Wednesday.

NCP Thane chief Anand Paranjpe condemned the “recreation of the assassination” of Gandhi by the ABHM national Secretary Puja Shakun Pandey on the occasion of Martys’ Day on Wednesday.

“The ABHM should be immediately banned and the government must arrest Pandey and her associates under charges of treason for insulting the Father of the Nation by such abhorrent acts,” Paranjpe demanded.

At the ABHM event on Wednesday, Pandey ‘shot’ at an effigy of Gandhi from which ‘blood’ oozed out. The activists cheered, distributed sweets and raised slogans in favour of Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse.

The NCP leader said this shocking incident proved that the Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was only wearing a mask (mukhauta) of the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi but in their hearts they were actually guided by Godse’s principles.

“This country is still inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and his preaching of peace and non-violence… It can never be overshadowed by the action of Godse or his followers. The government must book them for treason for this blatant anti-national act and also ban the ABHM,” Paranjpe said.

The ABHM, a breakaway group of the original Hindu Mahasabha, with which Godse was allegedly associated, always ‘celebrates’ Gandhi’s death as ‘Shaurya Divas’ extolling his assassin.

After a video of Wednesday’s ‘celebrations’ and mock ‘killing’ of Gandhi’s effigy went viral, it attracted widespread condemnation.

Hundreds of NCP activists converged near a statue of Gandhi in the city, many sporting black bands, and sat on a silent protest on Thursday afternoon.

Hindu temple vandalized in US

January 31, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  A Hindu temple has been vandalized in the US state of Kentucky, with officials calling the incident as “hate crime”.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said vandals broke windows at Swaminarayan Temple, located in the state capital’s Bardstown Road, and wrote hateful words on temple walls, reports Courier Journal newspaper.

Fischer said that between Sunday evening and Tuesday morning, the vandals broke in and spray-painted “repugnant messages of hate” in the temple.

In an upstairs room, profane messages were spray-painted on the walls along with several black crosses. Phrases including “Jesus is all mighty”, “Jesus is Lord” and “God” were also sprayed in black paint on the walls.

Near an entrance to the temple, a window had been broken, a picture was partially sprayed with black paint and “Jesus is the Only God” and a black cross were sprayed next to a staircase.

A knife was also left on a chair in the temple, according to Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad. He called the vandalism “a hate crime”.

He said “too many incidents like this” had taken place in Louisville, referring to a past vandalism incident at the Louisville Islamic Centre and heightened safety concerns at a local Sikh temple following a deadly temple shooting in Wisconsin in 2012.

“The desecration of this temple is heartbreaking,” Conrad said, adding, “I want the people of this temple to know that we will stand with them. We will do our best to keep them safe and we will do what we need to do to make Louisville a safer city.”

Raj Patel, a spokesman for the temple, said no members were inside when the vandalism happened. The temple has been located at its current address for about five years and usually attracts 60 to 100 people for Sunday worship.

Conrad said the police would be at the temple on Sunday to make sure the community was safe.

19 flying displays: Aero India 2019 promises to be bigger and better

January 31, 2019 by Nasheman

There will be 17 flying displays by HAL and seven displays by foreign agencies, including two flying displays of Rafale jets.

The 12th edition of Aero India in Bengaluru’s Yelahanka Air Force Station is all set to kick off between February 20 and 24 and the event is expected to be bigger and better than the ones held before.

Preparations for the air show have reached their final stages and this year, the start-ups under the Make In India initiative in Defence will be showcased during the show. Aero India 2019 will also have a drone competition and a Women’s Day special where Sunita Williams, a record holder for the maximum number of spacewalks by a woman, is expected to participate in the seminar on February 24.

This time around, Aero India will also witness Drone Olympics. The participants will kick-start the competition at the Government Flying Training School in Jakkur and the finalists will participate at the Aero India event on February 21.

“There will also be a day where the theme will be start-ups. The Ministry of Defense is still planning it out. There will be companies who will showcase their ideas during this show,” an official said.

In addition, the Union government has instructed Sainik schools and other schools in Karnataka to bring students for the air show. “We are expecting 10,000 students to participate in the various events and seminars. The aim is to recruit more people into the armed forces,” the official added.

Over 5 lakh people are expected to attend the show and officers at AFS Yelahanka say all issues they faced during the air show in 2017 are being dealt with. For starters, the general public, who will be arriving to view the show, will have to go to the ariel display viewing area via gate number 8, 9, 10 and 11 only. This would mean that they will have to make their way through Yelahanka Town and will not be allowed to use the the Yelahanka Main Road. Only exhibitors, service providers and the media will be allowed to use this road.

Traffic diversions for those going towards the airport are also expected. The airport road will be closed and commuters will have to make their way to BIAL via Hennur. In addition, a parking space is being arranged to overcome the issues faced during the 2017 show. This time, the task has been contracted to a private company, which will be handling the issue. Shuttle services will be provided between the parking lot and the ariel display viewing area in order to avoid pedestrian traffic along the Yelanhanka Main Road.

“We have identified two highways for beautification and the state government is also working on widening the road as soon as possible. The garbage generated will be cleared out once every half hour. This time we will install 1,000 toilets for people to use. There will be two food courts instead of one and also an Indira Canteen, which will offer food at affordable rates,” said Air Commodore in-charge of the Yelahanka Air Force Station, Ravuri Sheetal.

This time around, HAL will be the event organiser as opposed to the Defence Exhibition Organisation. “There are 21 sub-committees which the HAL has set up specifically to coordinate various operations for Aero India 2019. As of now, 31 flying display teams have registered and 21 static display teams have registered and 365 companies both Indian and foreign have confirmed their participation. There will be a large number of business-to-business, government-to-business and government-to-government meetings during the show,” said Wing Commander Amit Kumar, in-charge of Aero India.

The air show will also have two additional display stalls – G and F. In 2017, the show had A, B, C, D and AB stalls for static display. “On an average, 80-90 aircraft can be displayed in each stall, again, depending upon the size of the aircraft,” he added.

There will be 19 flying displays by the Indian Air Force and 17 by HAL and seven displays by foreign agencies including two flying displays of Rafale jets.
