Movie Review: 'Spy' is an interesting espionage thriller

June 22, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

spy-2015

Producer: Paul Feig, Jessie Henderson, Peter Chemin and Jenno Topping
Director: Paul Feig
Star Cast: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Miranda Hart, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, Peter Serafinowicz, Bjorn Gustafsson and Nargis Fakhri
Genre: Espionage Thriller
Verdict: Good

Together the pairing of director Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy had gained an instant recognition through their earlier movie Bridesmaid. But somewhere along the line their director – actress chemistry is totally missing in their latest outing Spy.

Plot: Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer and prevent a global disaster.
Aces: The only plus point of the movie is the lead actress Melissa McCarthy. The other scene stealing act comes from Jason Statham and Jude Law.

Minuses: The female version of James Bond parody does not exactly work here. Besides what is an Indian actress like Nargis Fakhri doing in a Hollywood espionage thriller?

Last Word: If you are a fan of a thriller genre, then this is the movie for you.

Movie Review: 'ABCD 2' showcases the best of choreography

June 22, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

ABCD 2

Producer: Siddharth Roy Kapur
Director: Remo D’Souza
Star Cast: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Prabhu Deva, Dharmesh Yelande, Lauren Gottlieb, Raghav Juyal, Pravin Bhosale, Sushant Pujari, Punit Pathak, Prachi Shah, Tisca Chopra, Jineeth Rath, Karthik, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Kapil Sharma, Terence Lewis & Remo D’Souza
Genre: Dance
Verdict: Good

Choreographer turned director Remo D’Souza needs no special introduction. In his directorial debut offering F.A.L.T.U he did show some directorial sparks. In his 2nd directorial outing ABCD Any Body Can Dance he was excellent and in ABCD 2 Remo is outstanding.

Plot: A sequel to 2013 released ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, ABCD 2 explores the real life struggle of 3 Mumbai based choreographers and dancers Vishnu (Prabhu Deva), Vinnie (Shraddha Kapoor) and Suresh (Varun Dhawan). The story, inspired by real life Nalasopara Boys, revolves around their journey from the narrow lanes of Mumbai to the World of Hip – Hop dance championship in Las Vegas.

Aces: The slick presentation of the varied dance forms in Las Vegas. The realistic performances of Prabhu Deva, Varun Dhawan, Shaddha Kapoor, Lauren Gottlieb and of course the varied dancing boys.

Minuses: The entire movie looks like a dance show reel or like a music video in bits and pieces.

Last Word: A full time pass movie. Go bask in the glory of dance.

"My debut film 'Uvaa' is a clean & wholesome family entertainer": Dhanraj Jethani

June 18, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Dhanraj Jethani

Distributor turned producer Dhanraj Jethani is now ready with his latest offering titled ‘Uvaa’. Incidentally speaking ‘Uvaa’ is a story about 5 youngsters who are living a carefree life with a carefree attitude and a lot of “Dangamasti” thrown in, until they witness a young girl being tossed out of a car and when they try to help her, their own life gets embroiled in tensional turmoil. ‘Uvaa’ is releasing on 26th Jun, 2015 and Dhanraj Jethani is very hopeful that it will achieve a grand success.

How was your journey so far in Bollywood?

I started my filmy journey in Bollywood by distributing films. The last one I distributed was ‘1920 Returns’.

Then how come you thought of jumping onto the production bandwagon?

I just thought that I should do something different after distributing films even otherwise I think that distribution & production are like the 2 sides of the same coin.

So what is your debut film ‘Uvaa’ as a producer all about?

My debut film ‘Uvaa’ is the story of 5 youngsters, hailing from UP, who are always involved in a lot of brawls and then their parents get them admitted in an English speaking institution and wonder of wonders the atmosphere out their has complete change of heart in them.

Please continue!

And then one fine day they witness a strange incident on the road. They see that a young girl is being tossed out of a car who then flee away. Now the youngsters of our film rush to her help. But soon enough they all get embroiled in a vicious political system not to forget the cop’s dragnet.

So what is the underlining message of ‘Uvaa’?

All through the film there is an underlining social message. You see actually the girl who is tossed out of the car turns out to be a victim of a gangrape. So ‘Uvaa’ is like questioning the Government, their vicious political system, and the cops who are also involved in this vicious political system.

Then what kind of a film is ‘Uvaa’ in reality?

Frankly speaking ‘Uvaa’ is a clean & wholesome family entertainer albeit with an underlining social message. There is no cheapness and not even an iota of vulgarity. The whole family can see the film in totality and enjoy its music which is the mainstay of the film. It is also a comedy drama so that you can laugh your guts out. Nowhere have we shown the actual rape. But the film focuses mainly on the aftermath of the rape scenario. With this incident of the rape kaand we are also trying to question PM Narendra Modi, who is in total favor of our “Betiyaan”. Then why this gross injustice against the “Daughters Of India” and will such rape kaand ever have an end to it so that one fine day our daughters can feel & breathe safely on the Indian soil. Period!

‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ Gets A Tax Rebate

‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ gets a Tax rebate. Even before its release, ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ starring Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan & Rajkummar Rao has achieved a feat that many films manage to attain after weeks of release. The state of Madhya Pradesh declared that the Mohit Suri directorial will be tax free. Recently, Vidya Balan & Mohit Suri paid a visit to the state to meet the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and now according to an official statement, the government has exempted ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ from entertainment tax. What seems to be a moment of rejoice for the cast & crew of the film, however has turned out to be controversy, soon after the decision was made many Congress officials are upset over this fact and have apparently claimed that the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh is star-struck. Moreover, it is being said that they are accusing the government of taking such a hasty decision without reviewing the content of the film, considering that only films with historical, moral or ethical value to the society fall under the category of exemption and are miffed over the fact that this romantic drama has been given a tax exemption despite it being a complete commercial film.

Censor Board recently told Remo that Indians can’t be called ‘Beggars’.

The Remo Fernandes directed UTV Production’s ‘ABCD 2’ has been cleared by the Censor Board Of Film Certification with a ‘U’ certificate (for all ages) with just one verbal cut. The line “All Indians Are Neggars’ has been chopped off. Otherwise not a shot has been touched. The censor board, was mesmerized by Varun Dhawan, Shradha Kapoor & Prabhu Dheva’s dancing. The film is clean healthy family fare. And they all felt there was no reason to not give the film a ‘U’ certification. However one line had to go. It referred to Indians in a derogatory manner. Censor guidelines specify that no utterances insulting any nationality or community must be allowed. Remo seemed pleased with the censor certification though displeased with the film’s release date not been pre-poned by a day to June 18.

‘Mastizaade’ After Facing Censor Rejection Moves Appellate Tribunal

‘Mastizaade’ after facing censor rejection moved appellate tribunal. Filled with sexual innuendos, ‘Mastizaade’ was supposed to be one of the most unabashed sex comedies of the year. Unfortunately, the Censor Board is not happy with the subject and the film which was slated for release in May has been facing censor’s wrath since then. Initially ‘Mastizaade’ was waiting for certification from the Censor Board which resulted in the delay of the release. And later, the board refused to certify the film because of too much sexual content. Further, the film was sent to the Revising Committee for a change in the decision but faced the same fate once again since the committee too found the content too bold for viewing. And hence, the makers of the film have now decided to approach the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal. From one of the female members of the board had decided to pass the film with an ‘A’ certificate along with a few cuts but her decision, it seems, was not taken into consideration. Moreover, it is being said that Pahlaj Nihalani had told I&B Ministry that the decision for the film was taken by Nandini Sardesai, a member of Revising Committee. However, Pritish Nandy is apparently not convinced with the same since according to him, Nandini Sardesai was not present during either of the screening. As of now, the decision over ‘Mastizaade’, directed by Milap Zaveri, starring Sunny Leone, Tusshar Kapoor & Vir Das in the lead, is still pending, awaiting a reply from the Tribunal.

Movie Review: 'Dil Dhadakne Do' is a perfectly enjoyable picture of a complex relationship

June 16, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Dil Dhadakne Do

Banner: Junglee Pictures & Excel Entertainment
Producer: Ritesh Sidhwani & Farhan Akhtar
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Cast: Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Ridhima Sood, Rahul Bose,
Zarina Wahab, Vikrant Massey, Parmeet Sethi, Manoj Pahwa, Pawan Chopra & above all Aamir Khan
Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

To say that Zoya Akhtar is an accomplished director would be an understatement. She had proved her her directorial mettle with her debut directorial venture ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’. And with her latest directorial venture ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ she has once again scored brownie points.

Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) is a successful businessman who owns Ayka, a company on the verge of bankruptcy. He has a troubled relationship with his wife, Neelam (Shefali Shah), and his 2 children, Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) & Kabir (Ranveer Singh). Ayesha has a successful business of her own, but is unhappily married to Manav (Rahul Bose). Kabir unwillingly participates in the family business and yearns to pursue a career as a pilot. In celebration of Kamal & Neelam’s 30th anniversary, they invite their family & friends for a 10 day cruise trip across the Mediterranean. Among their invitees, are Mr. Sood (Parmeet Sethi) and his family. Kamal plots to get Kabir married to Sood’s daughter, Noorie (Riddhima Sood), in exchange for his investing in Ayka. In the ship, Kabir meets a free-spirited dancer, Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma), and engages in a romantic relationship with her. Noorie, on the other hand, falls in love with Rana (Vikrant Massey), the son of a family hated by her parents.

Even giving Zoya Akhtar a standing ovation for her directorial triumph would be in suffice. She has even succeeded in extracting an earnest performance from her principal cast. And yes even from Aamir Khan who has lent his voice for the dog pluto who ultimately proves to be the mainstay of the film. A deserving special mention must also go to the film’s cinematography (Carlos Catalan) for having presented some of the breath taking & amazing visuals in the film. The film’s editing (Manan Mehta & Anand Subaya) gives the film its pace with which the film sails smoothly.

Performance wise Anil Kapoor is 1st rate and in full form, Shefali Shah is extraordinnare, Ranveer Singh is picture perfect, Priyanka Chopra is the scene stealer, Anushka Sharma is terrific & Farhan Akhtar is excellent. Débutante Riddhima Sood is a revelation. While the rest of the cast comprising of Rahul Bose, Zarina Wahab, Vikrant Massey, Parmeet Sethi, Manoj Pahwa, Pawan Chopra lend perfect credibility to their individual roles.

Tail Piece: ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ is a classy film meant for the elite multiplex audiences. While the single screen cine goers may find this movie a trifle boring.

Movie Review: 'Jurrasic World' is an entertaingly watchable fare for one & all

June 16, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

jurassic-world

Banner: Amblin Entertainment
Producer: Kathleen Kennedy & Gerald R. Molen
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazzello, Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero, Wayne Knight, Samuel L. Jackson, Cameron Thor & Miguel Sandoval
Music: John Williams

Hollywood Director Steven Spielberg certainly needs no special introduction and his latest directorial outing is an American science fiction adventure film which is the 1st installment of the ‘Jurassic Park’ film series. It is based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton, ‘Jurassic Park’ was followed by 3 sequels, ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’ (1997) & ‘Jurassic Park III’ (2001), both of which were box office successes but received mixed critical responses.

The film centers on the fictional Isla Nublar, an islet located off Central America’s Pacific Coast, near Costa Rica, where a billionaire philanthropist and a small team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of cloned dinosaurs. John Hammond, the founder & CEO of bioengineering company InGen, has created a theme park called Jurassic Park on Isla Nublar, a tropical island in an isolated Central American location populated with cloned dinosaurs. After a park worker is killed by a Velociraptor, in spite of an attempted rescue led by the park’s game warden, Robert Muldoon, the park’s investors, represented by lawyer Donald Gennaro, demand that experts visit the park and certify it as safe.

Almost a decade after the release of the last part in the ‘Jurassic Park’ series, we see the release of the 4th installment ‘Jurrasic World’. For those who have witnessed the spectacle of the 1st ‘Jurrasic Park’ more than 2 decades ago and have grown up on Steven Spielberg’s vision of the park, there will surely be feeling as to ‘what new will this movie show?. The 1st half of the film is a visual treat (especially in 3D) as the filmmaker gives us a full tour of the advanced dinosaur park. On the other hand, the 2nd half of the film features unending thrill rides in the form of a cat & mouse game. Overall, despite ‘Jurrasic World’ being predictable in parts, it does not fail to amaze you, developing into a fitting sequel to its predecessors.

Performance wise Chris Pratt adds life to the character of Owen, Bryce Dallas Howard keeps the audiences wondering. It will be noted 1st time in history of Bollywoodian Cinema that Irrfan Khan has got a very meaty role in this Hollywood big budget film and as always, he manages to charm the audiences with his performance. While the rest of the cast comprising of Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazzello, Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero as Donald Gennaro, Wayne Knight, Samuel L. Jackson, Cameron Thor & Miguel Sandoval have all performed exceedingly well.

Tail Piece:  The film is for both, the young audiences who haven’t seen the series on the big screen and also for the ones who have been following it for decades. In fact ‘Jurrasic World’ is surely a big screen experience that is not to be missed, especially if you can catch it on IMAX 3D.

Movie Review: The Duff is a enjoyably funny

June 13, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

The Duff

Producer: Susan Cartsonis McG and Mary Viola
Director: Ari Sandel
Star Cast: Mae Whitman, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Bianca Santos, Skyler Samels, Romany Malco, Ken Jeong, Allison Jenny, Chris Wylde, Mahaley Manning, Nick Eversman, Seth Mariwether, Gabriella Fraille, Danielle Lyn, David Gridley and Brian Dewar McNamara
Genre: Romantic Teen Comedy
Verdict: Good

Debutante director Ari Sandel’s, known more for his short film West Bank Story and a docu drama on Wild West Show named 30 Days & 30 Nights, ‘The Duff’ is a hilarious albeit a thought provoking tale of a girl nicknamed as DUFF which stands for a “designated ugly fat friend” which is bound to get lapped up by a teenie bopper crowd.

Plot: Bianca (Mae Whitman) is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as ‘The DUFF’ (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends (Skyler Samuels & Bianca Santos). Now, despite the words of caution from her favourite teacher (Ken Jeong), she puts aside the potential distraction of her crush, Toby (Nick Eversman), and enlists Wesley (Robbie Amell), a slick but charming jock, to help reinvent herself. To save her senior year from turning into a total disaster, Bianca must find the confidence to overthrow the school’s ruthless label maker Madison (Bella Thorne) and remind everyone that no matter what people look or act like, we are all someone’s DUFF.

Aces: It depicts a truest picture of high school students intertwined with their romantic interludes and of course the most outstanding performances by its principal cast, aided and abetted by a cavalcade of some fresh talents.

Minuses: Sometimes the chemistry between the actors is missing and the movie tends to go overboard with ‘The Duff’ business.
Last Word: Missing ‘The Duff’ will be like missing a heart warming movie. Period!

Deepali Sathe: A sensational crooner makes waves

June 11, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

deepali sathe

Deepali Sathe happens to be a latest singing sensation in Tinsel Town. So if you’ve heard the song “Yeh kaisi jagah” from Vishesh Films’ latest offering ‘Humari Adhuri Kahani’, which is releasing today and if it managed to steal your heart and make you hum the number on loop then you surely must’ve wondered who’s lilting voice is that? It’s the new rising sensation in the music world going with the name of Deepali Sathe.

Deepali, who has already lent her voice to the song “Daingad Daingad” in ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’, can’t stop gushing about her experience of having worked with popular music composer Jeet Ganguly. “This isn’t the 1st time I’ve sung for Jeet da, I 1st worked with him for a Bengali track “Janemon” from the movie ‘Herogiri’, clarifies Deepali while adding, “Jeet da liked my voice so much that he called me for “Ye kaisi jagah”. I got to know that Jeet da told Mahesh & Mukesh Bhattji that he was gifting them a fresh and new voice in this film and had praised me a lot too. He also told me that this is the most important song of my career and will prove to be a turning point for me. So frankly, I was nervous & excited all at the same time while recording for the song. But at the time of recording Jeet da helped me and narrated the story to me about a woman being in a dilemma because she is happy being in love but at the same time she is already married to someone else. It really made me get into the mood of the number and I could sing it well.”

deepali sathe

Deepali Sathe isn’t new to the music world. The songstress started crooning at the raw age of 3 during Sai Samiti Bhajans and amidst various shows, music albums, reality shows among others started mingling with the stalwarts of the music industry including the likes of Udit Narayan with whom she sung a duet, Asha Bhosle, Kavita Krishna Murthy, Khayyam, Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan, Suresh Vadkar amongst others who were her judges at the reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’.

The singer then went onto lending her voice to the title tracks of shows like “Vaari Vaari Apne Piya Pe Vaari” on Life Ok, ‘Main Lakshmi Tere Angan Ki’ & ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ from Zee Tv before moving onto playback singing for Hindi films.

May God – The Almighty fullfil all her crooning wishes galore and may she reach the pinnacle of glories galore in no time.

A musical interactive session with lyricist & music composer Praveen Bhardwaj

June 8, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Praveen Bhardwaj

Praveen Bhardwaj, in his one and a half decade long illustrious musical journey, happens to be a most reputed lyricist turned music composer. And of late with the release of his debut single audio album named “Desires – Mohabbat Mein Tujhe Kya Milega” he has turned a crooner too. Incidentally speaking his debut audio album “Desires – Mohabbat Mein Tujhe Kya Milega” has been acclaimed & ranked as #1 on an international level so much so that he he has been placed as #1 singer and clubbed with international singers like Enrique Iglasias, Justin Bibber et al. Shaheen Raaj recently spoke to the God gifted singer, over hot cups of spicy aromatic tea at his posh flat in Veer Desai Road. Tune in.

To set the musical ball rolling in your court tell us how did your musically crooning journey begin?

Honestly speaking my musical journey in Tinsel Town had kick started as a lyricist almost one and a half decade ago. And the most interesting about my musical career is that there has always been a landmark turning point. For instance as a lyricist my “kem che” song became a runaway chartbuster number and then there was no looking back. This was the 1st turning point. And then the 2nd turning point of my career was me turning a writer with the film ‘Swaha – Life Beyond Superstition’ in which I had penned the story, screenplay & dialogues. And needless to say the movie was hit and I gained instant recognition. And finally my one more, this time a hat trick, landmark turning point is the recent release of my debut single music audio album named “Desires – Mohabbat Mein Tujhe Kya Milega?”. Its a melancholic number written, composed an of course sung by me for the 1st time ever.

Praveen Bhardwaj

And how do you feel with this added responsibility of singing a song written & composed by your own self?

You see the lyrics which I used to pen I used to sing it for the music composers, producers, directors and all concerned. It was the result of these musical sittings that my friends inspired me to come out with my debut single music audio album “Desires – Mohabbat Mein Tujhe Kya Milega”.

And what was the response of your debut music audio album?

Believe me the response has been terrific, tremendous, mindboggling et al. I have no more words left to describe it. Just within 20 days of its release my debut single music audio album “Desires – Mohabbat Mein Tujhe Kya Milega” has been declared as an international hit all over. So much so that I have been clubbed and ranked #1 singer along with international singers like Enrique Iglasies, Justin Biebber et al. And please let not your parting question be “What Next?” As at this stage I don’t have the wish to be in search of the next turning point of my life at least not for the next 5 years of my life. But of course that does not mean that I do not mean to grow in my self chosen field of penning lyrics, writing, music composing and now singing too. That’s it.
