For the corpse burners of Varanasi, untouchability is still a reality

May 2, 2018 by Nasheman

It was past 10 in the night. Four pyres were aflame at Manikarnika Ghat on the banks of the Ganga here. Gagan Choudhary, a corpse burner, was shifting from one pyre to another as the air reeked of burning flesh and wood — tinged with alcohol, tobacco and cannabis.

As a mild wind from the sacred river blew over the ghat, flecks of ashes from the burning pyres swirled in the air.

In Hindu custom, it is believed that the path to liberation (moksha) for a soul is attained if the physical body is burnt at death at Manikarnika Ghat.

And Chaudhary, like his daily routine, was jabbing the corpses with a wooden stick one after the other. Moving barefoot, he covered his face with a piece of cloth to protect himself from the heat and ashes.

“This is all we have been taught — to burn dead bodies. This is what we are good at. We have no hope of education and no scope for improving our standard of living,” said Chaudhary, who lives near the ghat in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency.

Chaudhary belongs to the Dom community which, for generations, has been burning dead bodies. They are generally considered lowest in the caste hierarchy — even among the Dalits — and often become victims of untouchability. Dreaming for a better life is unimaginable.

“My father was also into it. He was a heavy drinker and he stopped working. Then I had to take up the profession. It is not that we do it willingly, but something we are forced into. This is our destiny,” Chaudhary said.

His eyes were bloodshot and his breath reeked of country liquor. He recalled he was just eight when he started burning corpses and consuming alcohol because he couldn’t bear the smell of dead bodies.

“You think it is easy to carry so many dead bodies and burn them every day? I cannot. Nobody can do it unless we consume alcohol or smoke weed,” he grinned.

He couldn’t say how old he is. “I must be around 26, I guess. I don’t have any birth certificate because I didn’t attend much of school. And have been doing the same work for 16-17 years now.”

His four to five hours of labour fetches him around Rs 300 a day and he is happy with whatever he is earning.

“Rest of the time I manage to either drive a car or pull a rickshaw. But then, I prefer hiding my identity. Not all would appreciate to be served by a Dalit, that too a Dom” he quipped.

A little above where the corpses were being burnt sat Jai Raja Chaudhary. Though also a Dom, in the caste hierarchy he is higher than Gagan Chaudhary. He assembles the other Doms and assigns them the work of corpse burning.

He has a 24-hour working day. This is his family tradition. Jai Raja said that, in his family, every male member spends a whole day at Manikarnika Ghat by turn.

“Our situation can never develop because casteism still is a major factor in India. We are not being allowed to explore opportunities. We are way behind compared to the other Dalits. Our comparison comes within our community. We cannot even imagine competing with those from the upper classes,” Jai Raja, 40, said.

He has studied till Class 12 but couldn’t continue further because of family pressure. He has three children — two sons and a daughter — who attend a government-run school. But he is not sure how long will his kids be able to continue their education.

“Not a single Dom would want their kids to pursue burning corpses as a career. But do we have any other option? We have been exploited over the years and probably the same is going to continue. Upliftment of our status is difficult.”

For the Doms, untouchability is still a reality which they face almost every day even in Varanasi where they have been living for centuries. They are abused and humiliated by the upper castes, Jai Raja said.

“We are not allowed to walk in the same lane as used by upper class. They will clean the lanes if we pass by. Shop-owners never hand over cash directly on our palms. They will either keep it aside and ask us to pick up or simply drop it in our palms.”

Gagan Chaudhary said he and his contemporaries were ill-treated even by Dalits who claim their social status a notch above them.

“Not just the upper class but even those among the Dalits who have now made money often misbehave with us, use slang language to address us.”

He wished his life too turns out to be like “Deepak Chaudhary” — a character from the movie “Masaan” played by Vicky Kaushal who portrays a Dom boy. But he contends that was too “filmy”.

“Wo haqeeqat nahi hai, filmy thaa (it was not based on reality, it was a movie). In real life more than 90 per cent of us haven’t even completed our schooling, forget about going to college.”

But like Deepak Chaudhary will he too dare to fall in love with someone from the upper caste?

“I don’t know what that is. I will marry someone from the same community. Upper caste women will neither marry us nor would we want to marry someone from outside the community — or else there won’t be any compatibility,” he smiled.

Former Banker and a Pakistani Bus Driver’s Son has selected for Britain Home Secretary

April 30, 2018 by Nasheman

The newly appointed secretary has had a decorated career. In January 2015, Javid was awarded the Politician of the Year award at the British Muslim Awards. In November 2017, Javid won Patchwork Foundation’s Conservative MP of the Year Award.
Sajid Javid was on Monday named as Britain’s new home secretary after Amber Rudd resigned, having “inadvertently misled” lawmakers about deportation targets for illegal immigrants.

Javid was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, and is one of five sons of parents of Pakistani descent. His father was a bus driver. His family moved from Lancashire to Stapleton Road, Bristol.
Prime Minister Theresa May’s Downing Street office announced the appointment in a statement. “The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of the Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP as Secretary of State for the Home Department,” May’s office said in a statement.

The newly appointed secretary has had a decorated career. In January 2015, Javid was awarded the Politician of the Year award at the British Muslim Awards. In November 2017, Javid won Patchwork Foundation’s Conservative MP of the Year Award.

Currently, Javid lives with his wife Laura and their four children. He has previously said that his family’s heritage is Muslim, but he does not practise any religion, although he believes that “we should recognise that Christianity is the religion of our country”.

Javid has received religious hate mail in the form of a “Punish a Muslim day” parcel; as of March 2018, he was the fifth British MP to receive such abuse.

Javid was educated from 1981 to 1986 at Downend School, a state comprehensive near Bristol, followed by Filton Technical College from 1986 to 1988, and finally the University of Exeter from 1988 to 1991. At Exeter, he studied Economics and Politics and became a member of the Conservative Party.

At the age of 20, Javid attended his first Conservative Party Conference and campaigned against the Thatcher government’s decision in that year to join the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM), calling it a “fatal mistake”.

Javid joined Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City immediately after university, working mostly in South America. Aged 25, he became the bank’s vice-president. He returned to London in 1997, and later joined Deutsche Bank as a director in 2000. In 2004, he became a managing director at Deutsche Bank and, one year later, global head of Emerging Markets Structuring.

Javid, Britain’s former communities secretary, is the first minority politician to hold one of Britain’s four top government jobs.

At a Conservative Friends of Israel lunch in 2012, The Jewish Chronicle reported Javid as stating that “if he had to leave Britain to live in the Middle East, then he would choose Israel as home. Only there, he said, would his children feel the ‘warm embrace of freedom and liberty'”.

On 9 April 2014, Prime Minister David Cameron appointed Javid to the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Minister for Equalities following the resignation of Maria Miller over her expenses. This made him the first MP to have been elected in 2010 to join the Cabinet, and the first British Pakistani MP to lead a Government Department.

Javid defended media freedom and the right of the press to investigate wrongdoing by politicians and officials in his first appearance as culture secretary on BBC’s Question Time programme. “The public were right to judge her on how she responded, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that,” he said.

POOJA HEDGE NAILS A DANCE SEQUENCE IN A SINGLE TAKE!

Grace personified, Pooja Hegde most recently nailed a long dance sequence in a single take owing to limited time available to the team of the Telugu film they were shooting for, on a busy street in the United States of America. The team had only a window of 15 minutes as the high energy song needed to be shot in daylight, but thanks to 8 hours of rehearsals each day for a week, the stunner pulled it off with much aplomb. Chetan Bhagat must ‘surprise’ readers or he will perish

April 27, 2018 by Nasheman

A writer who was once a phenomenon, literally took Indian publishing by a storm, popularised reading in a magnitude that India had never known before, Chetan Bhagats reputation as a writer has fast crumbled over the past few years. Bhagat seldom surprised readers with his books but his sudden “global deal” with Amazon Publishing, announced Friday, for next six novels came as a shock to publishing insiders.

All of Bhagat’s previous books — nine blockbusters — had been published by Rupa, the publishing house that introduced him to the literary scene and sold his paperbacks at giveaway prices. He arrived with a bang and soon became a national sensation, selling hundreds of thousands of copies across the country at an incredible pace.

But things were different back then. The Indian novel in English was largely confined to the literary genre and the few light-hearted chick flicks that were being published seldom hit the bestseller charts. Bhagat brought a touch of difference in his novels and despite all criticism levelled against him by critics and several heavyweight writers, there is little denying the fact that his novels connected superbly with the Indian middle-class living in tier 2 and 3 cities.

His over-the-top romance sequences and stories centred in a call centre or the IIT came as a relief to the young population that was fast learning English. His readers bore immense resemblance to his characters; like the protagonists of his novels, many of them were not experts in English but aspired to speak in the language that the world was talking in, they fancied “sex with professor’s daughter” but never spoke of the taboo in public and more than anything else, they wanted to read an English novel that they could easily understand. What good would it do or how wonderful the novel is was the least of their concerns.

And just when this was happening, Bhagat made his presence felt by visiting as many colleges and events away from the metropolitan cities as he could. He was among India’s highest paid motivational speakers at a time but his choice of events always focussed on the tier-2 and tier-3 city population — his target readers.

In a country that has abysmally low literacy rate, Bhagat, if not for anything else, deserves credit for popularising reading in a manner that the country had never seen before. One can easily recall the times when the only English novels one could spot at a book stall on a UP or Bihar railway station would be those by this “paperback king”. The popularity multiplied so vigorously that his novels travelled from bookshops to the local ration and even medicine shops!

Nine books down the line, where does Chetan Bhagat stand today as a writer? Not only have his sales dropped significantly but he has also lost his loyal readers, if at all he had many. The reason is simply because most of his readers were of a migrating nature and just as they gained better expertise of the English language and made a better sense of the books available to them, they climbed up the ladder and picked a book, which may have been a step higher than his standard.

Even as this was happening, there was a great churning of Indian writing in English in recent years. Bhagat’s success paved the way for several other commercial authors to rise to fore and on came the likes of Amish Tripathi, Ashwin Sanghi, Anuja Chauhan, Durjoy Dutta, Ravinder Singh and others, who now command the portfolio that Bhagat once prided upon.

Bhagat lost his place because he failed to surprise — in all of his novels, from the theme to storyline to language and diction, there was a similar line of continuity, as if this was all that the writer had to offer. Commercial fiction always attracts more readers than a literary novel but there has to be different backgrounds, different themes and even different settings to sustain the interest of readers.

And this sudden increase in readership found solace in the writers that arrived after Bhagat’s success. Their protagonists were different; they wove new stories out of old mythologies, they entangled tragedies and conspiracies along with Bhagat’s trademark romance while Bhagat turned from a popular writer to a troll on social media. Even the readers of sex sequences and commercial romance found their new writers in the likes of Durjoy Dutta, who used their charming personality and social media to routinely seduce young readers into buying their books.

All this while, Bhagat was making political statements on Twitter. Trolls, obviously, could not be far behind.

But his just announced “global deal” with Amazon Publishing for the next six books, which includes three fiction and three nonfiction titles, could be game changer in his literary career. They can either re-establish a dying writer or fast propel him into oblivion.

His next book will be releasing in October and given this last minute deal for as many as six books in print e-book and audio formats, the anticipation is high.

Bhagat must surprise his readers this time — and the wait has already been far too long. At the same time, how well does Amazon fit into the role that Rupa had served so far — and served excellently well — remains to be seen. While the content of his book will be discussed much later, it will be the pricing that will be the ultimate factor deciding his sales. Prices of books have increased manifolds and Indian novels are priced anywhere between Rs 350 – Rs 500 on an average today.

Rs 350 for a Chetan Bhagat novel? Readers are going to be watchful.

Children’s remains 140 skull found in Peru, indicates largest child sacrifice

April 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Archaeologists have found the remains of more than 140 children in Peru in what appears to have been the largest instance of ancient mass child sacrifice in the world, the media reported.

The children, along with 200 juvenile llamas, are estimated to have been sacrificed about 550 years ago and the remains were found in La Libertad outside Trujillo, Peru’s third-largest city, the Washington Post reported citing a National Geographic report.

It is estimated that the children’s age ranged from about five to 14 years. The llamas were all less than 18 months old.

The children’s skulls are stained with red, evidence that they were sacrificed in ritual killings, as the pigment was used in ceremonies.

The cuts to both the children and llamas’ skeletal remains suggest their chests were cut open.

Items found in the burials, such as ropes, are radiocarbon dated to between 1400 and 1450 A.D.

The excavations began in 2011 when the remains of 42 children and 76 llamas were found.

Until now, the largest incident of mass child sacrifice was believed to have occurred in Mexico City where 42 children’s bodies had been discovered.

Google celebrates Jnanpith awardee Mahadevi Varma

April 27, 2018 by Nasheman

Google on Friday celebrated freedom fighter, women’s rights activist, Hindi poet and Jnanpith awardee Mahadevi Varma with a doodle.

On this date, in 1982, the Bharatiya Jnanpith honoured her with the prestigious award for her “outstanding contribution towards literature”.

Guest artist Sonali Zohra has designed the doodle that shows the transformative poet busy penning her thoughts into beautiful verses under a tree by the field on a breezy afternoon.

Often referred to as ‘modern Meera’ for ushering in the era of romanticism in Hindi literature, Varma was born on March 26, 1907, in Farukhabad in Uttar Pradesh into an orthodox family.

Married at the tender age of nine in 1916, Varma remained at her parental home to continue her education at Crossthwaite Girls’ School in Allahabad.

The spirit of a writer was kindled by Varma’s mother who inspired her daughter to write in Sanskrit and Hindi, according to Google.

She penned her first verses in secret, while pursuing a master degree in Sanskrit. However, her roommate and friend, Subhadra Kumari Chauhan (a well-known poet) discovered her talent soon.

Varma is revered as one of the foundational poets of the Chhayavad movement in Hindi literature, the Google blog said. Her poignant poetry and essays, mostly centred around her feminist outlook.

In her biography “Mere Bachpan Ke Din” (My Childhood Days), Varma wrote that at a time when a girl child was considered a burden upon the family, she was very fortunate to be born into a liberal family.

Her works appeared in magazines and books. Her collection of short stories “Sketches from My Past” portrays those women whom she encountered as the principal of an all-girls school.

Though a firm supporter of women’s rights, Varma also explored the topics of tradition and the past with great fondness, it added.

Varma was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1956, Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1979, and Padma Vibhushan in 1988. She passed away on September 11, 1987.
