Sports are one of the most spoken about in the Indian subcontinent. But unfortunately when you say sports, it generally refers to cricket which is almost a religion in this country. While efforts have been taken to support & promote other forms of sporting event, the format generally is cricket in its varied forms.

The IPL, the CCI the test matches, one day internationals & the format widens. The documentary film Fighting On Ice is not an ordinary feature documentary on sports. It brings forth the true fight between passion & struggle of people. It brings to the fore the rare appetite that many sportsmen both men & women possess for Ice Hockey which goes beyond money, fame & the closed doors of Government & also speaks volumes about the sports people & their struggle to keep not the just the sport alive, but kindle the passion so that it may stay lit amongst the next generation as well.

The documentary also features Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir & India’s winter sports hero Shiva Keshavan. The film has made its mark in the international circuit with thumping approval from both the audience & the critics alike. Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan & Writer Shridhar Raghavan Enthralled The Audiences

Talented duo of Siblings namely filmmaker Sriram Raghavan & writer Shridhar Raghavan enthralled the audiences at IFFI Goa 2018 with anecdotes from their years of growing up together in Pune & their journey through the film industry.
Speaking about how they fell in love with cinema, Sriram said, “As a kid I loved movies, that’s the only escape I had”, to which Shridhar added that, “We grew up in Pune next to the Apollo & Alankar cinema halls where we would watch all kinds of films from the past & the present, Hindi & Hollywood. One time I bunked school for 6 months and just watched films. Much like how kids do today using torrents.”
On being asked why it took him 17 long years to make his 1st ever feature film after passing out of the Film  & Institute of India (FTII), Sriram said that, “Hindi cinema in the 90’s wasn’t the kind of films I wanted to make. Also I took time finding out my voice. My critical faculty was much better than my writing ability & hence I didn’t like anything I wrote.”
To the amusement of everyone in the hall, Shridhar added that. “With Sriram screenwriting is like Kamasutra. He tries every position & angle.”
A lot of discussion revolved around his latest thriller, Andhadhun, a film that’s still running to packed houses. Asked about the ending Sriram was cryptic as always. He asked the audiences to telling him what they felt. Shridhar felt that what one thought of the ending revealed a lot about how they looked at the world & human nature. The primarily young student filmmaker community in the audiences asked the duo multiple questions on their writing & filmmaking process, which the siblings answered in detail.

Director Shaad Ali Dicussing Movies With The Film Critics At IFFI
The Internation Film Festival Of India (IFFI Goa 2018) also saw some of the leading film critics of the country engage in a conversation on the new age of cinema & how the lines between commercial mainstream cinema & alternative cinema are blurring. This elite panel included film critics like Bhawana Somaaya, Rajeev Masand & Anupama Chopra along with trade analyst Komal Nahata & filmmaker Shaad Ali (of Bunty Aur Babli & Saathiya fame) & Ankur Mehra (of Facebook fame) moderating the session.

This is especially true in a year where some of the biggest films have been those without stars but with amazingly fresh storylines. These include films like Badhai Ho, Stree & Raazi.
Starting of the panel on a light note Komal Nahata said that, “Because we don’t pay for our tickets & popcorn, we try to save other people’s money by giving a fair opinion.” Rajeev Masand added that “a lot of people don’t know what we do”, to which Komal Nahata retorted, “Even I don’t know what we do.”
Things soon took a serious turn with the conversation veering to how films are judged in India. When asked about his opinion filmmaker Shaad Ali mentioned that, “Films should not be judged by how much money is spent on them. Everyone works equally hard on their films.”
Throwing light on the role of the exhibitors & their perceived knowledge of what works & what doesn’t, Komal Nahata said that, “All the exhibitors understand is that ‘if the film gets an opening, then it will be a hit & if it doesn’t then it will flop.’ I don’t agree with that. That is why I like to see the film with the audience. The opening day figures of a film are not as important as the feeling & mood of the audience when they are watching a film.”
Speaking on the on-going audience evolution & their changing tastes as far as cinema is concerned, Anupama Chopra said, “There is no art-house cinema or mainstream cinema. What is Andhadhun? What is Badhai Ho? What is Sriram Raghavan? Is he an art-house filmmaker or a mainstream filmmaker? Now the lines are blurred, almost extinguished”.
Rajeev Masand added that, “It’s really an exciting time. Ideas & themes that wouldn’t usually be touched upon by the mainstream are today getting funded.” Komal Nahata added, “The audience has evolved, they see world cinema on their smartphones, they are receptive to different themes now. Therefore they appreciate films without a star-cast or middle of the road.”
The audience peppered the panel with questions on what the future holds for Indian cinema and how they see the market evolving further.

“The Biggest Mafia Which Is Ruining The Film Industry Is The Multiplex Mafia” – Rahul Film Rawail, Chairman Of The Indian Panorama, Feature Section
The 49th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI Gao 2018) kicked off on a celebratory note amongst an august gathering of celebrities, film fraternity & cine buffs. Expressing his pleasure about his country, Israel being the focus country this year, His Excellency Consul General of Israel to India Ya’akov Finkelstein said, “Through cinema we want to fortify the relations between India & Israel. I want to encourage the people of India to visit Israel and also make it a filming destination as I encourage the thought of seeing is believing. It is part of the growing partnership between Israel & India that embraces all levels of cooperation from the Government to the business sector to people to people relations to the cultural relations between the 2 countries.”
The 10 Israeli films offer a glimpse into the issues plaguing his country, history, landscapes, he said. The section opened with director Avi Nesher’s The Other Story. In Shalom Bollywood: The Untold Story of Indian Cinema, one of the other movies selected, viewers are introduced to the 2000 year-old Indian Jewish community & its place in shaping the Hindi film industry. The movie is directed by Danny Ben Moshe.
He also highlighted the co-production signed between the 2 countries that will enable cross cultural ties. He elucidated that Dharma Productions had already shot their movie Drive there & more films are in the pipeline.
His Excellency Consul General of Israel to India Ya’akov Finkelstein also spoke of the direct flight from Goa to Tel-Aviv to be introduced.
Speaking to the media, lifetime award recipient at IFFI, Dan Wolman shared his journey with the gathering. Wolman earlier received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at Jerusalem International Film Festival & won The “Ophir Life Time Achievement Award”. His noted films include Lemon Popsical, The Distance & Foreign Sister. There is a special presentation of 3 of his films at the festival namely Ben’s Biography, Floch & above Hide And Seek.
Dan Wolman described his work as an “advocate of the fringes”. His films have dealt with topics like old age homes, prostitutes, homosexuality & above all other offbeat topics. In his films he’s not trying to follow the trend, but find a way to do things that are courageous & different and still continue to work.
He’s already scripted a children’s film My Father’s Secret India that will be spread across Israel & India. He’s using the opportunity to look for investors looking to collaborate on the project, he said.
Also present was producer of the opening film The Other Story, David Silber. The story that began 4 years ago & reflects on Israeli children turning to religious life & the parent’s dilemma how to deal with it. “The film talks about secular parents who feel that they are losing their daughter to religious world & are trying to fight it and eventually learning how to accept the daughter,” he said.
In another press conference with the Jury members of the Indian Panorama feature & non-feature films, Rahul Rawail, Chairman of the Indian Panorama, Feature section praised the great strides taken by regional cinema. He said that in the future Indian cinema will be referred to as a collated whole & not regional or Hindi cinema.
Other jury members present were (Indian Panorama – Feature Section) Major Ravi & K. G. Suresh, Director General, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi.
Highlighting the shift in the non-feature category, veteran director Vinod Ganatra said that the short films will ‘definitely take over.’ He noted that 60% of the entries were short films.
The jury shared that the task of selection was a tough one. But through endless discussions, debates & analysis they arrived at the best set that would represent the country on an international platform.
The movies experimented with varied topics & Major Ravi noted that they had 18 transgender films. This meant that audiences are maturing & accepting new ideas. He elucidated with examples of Bengali film Nagarkirtan. Directed by Kaushik Ganguly, it explores the love story between a flute player Madhu & Parimal, a rural boy who realizes he’s a man trapped in a woman’s body.
Apart from content, Rawail Rawail also highlighted that there are no outlets for audiences to watch regional cinema. “The biggest mafia which is ruining this industry is the multiplex mafia. They decide what film will run, what will not run, for how many weeks & it’s all based around how much popcorn & samosas they can sell. They are not interested in the film,” Rahul Rawail said.
Infrastructure needs to be developed to screen for regional films, he added. “Costs are exorbitant for movies today. People pay for it and then they do not enjoy these kinds of films. The more people watch these films they will want to see them more & more.”
The 3rd press conference introduced the cast & the crew of the opening Indian Panorama films in the feature & non-feature categories. Olu, directed by veteran filmmaker Shaji N Karun takes you deep down under the Kerala backwaters where Olu (she), a gypsy girl mysteriously survives beneath the waters where she has been sunk by her rapists. She comes to the surface only on full moon nights and it is on one such night she meets a painter Vasu.
The director Shaji N Karun credited all those involved in the success of the film. He said that the fantasy film has strong influences of Buddhism in terms of use of motifs like the lotus & the moon.
In the non-feature category Kharvas, directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale moves the viewer with it is stirring tale of Aasawari, an artist who loses her child as a still born. He mentioned that the goal was to focus on ‘problems that we many times skip.’ “If it is about a woman we pretend that we don’t know about it or there is problem at all. It is a story of a mother who is trying to find peace in a turmoil situation where she has to fight within herself as a mother & the perceptions of the society.”
The film was shot in Goa for 5 days and the incredible aspect as a new filmmaker was trying to configure the climax. Shooting in a cow shed over long hours was a challenge. His theatre background came to his rescue in capturing his final shot.
The festival is all set to continue spreading the joy of cinema over the coming days.

Buddha & Buddha.Mov Steal The Show At Mami This Year

In the recently concluded MAMI festival, there were 2 brilliant films with a similar title – Buddha. One was Buddha.Mov directed by Kabir Mehta on the former well built Indian cricketer Budhadev In what is reminiscent of the recent Ranbir Kapoor acted Sanjay Dutt biopic, where Sanjay Dutt goes on record to tell that he had bedded some 200 & odd women. The documentary on Buddhadev informs the audience that he’s been to bed with 90 girls & what’s more, he keeps in touch with all of them. How? He’s set his phone to pop up every 5 names a day and then he sends each one of them a short message letting her know that he hasn’t forgotten her. In a series of long shots as he performs his daily exercise routine, the film makes a bold use of full frontal male nudity & uncensored locker-room talks; with outspoken cleverness is also a breath of fresh air amidst many social-themed films. The film has Buddhadev, the flamboyant cricketer authorizing unrestricted access into the most private aspects of his life to the filmmaker, lured by the chance of being the protagonist of the documentary film. The other film titled Buddha directed by Vinit Chandrasekharan talks about  how in the drought stricken eastern part of Maharashtra where close to 23000 farmers commit suicide since the year 2009 & the Christian missionaries decide to sell the land given to the Dalits in exchange for conversion to Christianity, a couple of decades ago. Father Benedict Deddario is entrusted with the task but his biggest roadblock is the poor local Dalit leader Vinya. Besides the land tussle, Benedict is shaken by Vinya’s resistance & unwillingness to convert to Christianity. Benedict will stop at nothing to not only sell the land but also get Vinya to convert, even if that means using Vinya’s power hungry wife against him.

Girija Oak’s Sweet & Sour Gesture

The best way to peoples’ hearts is through their stomachs. Girija Oak, who is all set to play the role of Meghana Nikade on Sony TV’s upcoming show Ladies Special knows this only too well! I brought along these lemon cakes for everyone from Pune’s famous bakery which is also famous for selling Shrewberry biscuits just because I wanted to make them happy.” Actors are known for throwing grand parties & events to show their gratitude, but there is something endearing about the sweetness of a lemon cake that made won Girija a lot of brownie points from her co-workers.

AGP World Is All Set To Present ‘Devdas’

AGP World, India’s leading theatre production house re-creates the tale of undying love Devdas. Originally written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, the much applauded novella has been transformed into a 150 minute theatre play. This romantic saga directed by Saif Hyder Hasan stars renowned actors such as Gaurav Chopra, Manjari Fadnis, Sunil Palwal, Sukhada Khandkekar, Bhavna Pani,  Smita Jaykar et al. Set against the backdrop of historically rich & old Calcutta, this rendition takes us through the unsolved mysteries of what happened to Chandramukhi & Paro after Devdas. In deference to the magnificence of 19th century Calcutta, the décor has been recreated in a manner that will certainly skip a heartbeat. Eye catching visuals from the gas-lit busy streets of the era paired with the history of opulent Havelis in India are sure to delight you. The play also highlights classic & contemporary fusion dance pieces choreographed by Shampa Gopikrishna (daughter of acclaimed Kathak maestro Padmashri Gopi Krishna) & Bertwin Ravi D’Souza, contributing to the spectacular theatrical experience. Saif Hyder Hasan seems equally thrilled & came on record to talk about his excitement. Commenting on the same he says, “Truly it isn’t easy to narrate a journey that has been experienced by audiences for decades.” With utmost precision & commitment to deliver a performance of a lifetime, AGP has added another golden feather to their cap.

Aditi Gupta Says That The TRP System On TV Is Bogus!

Aditi Gupta, who is seen in Ravindra Gautam’s Kaal Bhairav 2, is not a big fan of the TRP system. The actor says that somewhere it is this system which stops makers from trying out new things. “I think it is bogus. I don’t know how it works because no one knows how they calculate the numbers. It’s never been explained, so I don’t know how it is being done. But people still believe it & we go by it. I think because of the TRP system, I’ve seen that people are not trying to be more creative. People are not trying to evolve themselves because they think that if this thing is working, let it work as we are anyways getting the TRPs. I think TRPs are not required but if it won’t be there, I feel some shows here will be going on & on for years,” she says. Aditi loves being part of Kaal Bhairav 2 and is especially fond of the title. “I think it’s unique & interesting. It says a lot about the show & what it’s based on. But to know about the show, you will have to watch it. It sounds very strong as a topic, but doesn’t give out too much. I am playing the character of this girl Archana. She is a very outspoken person. She is today’s girl, who is very confident & talks a lot. She will go & talk to anybody. She will also go & talk to a watchman but with the same respect & love. She is in love with a boy who is from a very royal family, which she has no idea of. But his family is cursed, so she’s the one who will be trying to figure out what is the mystery all about. Apparently, in their family any boy can’t live more than 30 years of age. I really relate to my character. We are so similar. I don’t have to actually make up anything. I have to be as natural as possible. Being so alike just helps me with the character. The way she is talkative & her hand moments & all of that is so similar to the way I am in real life”. Aditi is sure that the show will be loved. “Everyone’s expectations is quite high, I think this genre has not been explored on TV as yet. I think it is a great show, I am not just saying that because I am doing it, but it is something which people like. It has a sense of mystery & also has a lot of amazing actors in it. So, I think it is a great combination and people would like to watch this kind of genre. I love working with producer-director Ravindra Gautam as well.
