Congress left red-faced as mouthpiece targets Nehru, Sonia

December 28, 2015 by Nasheman

Sonia Gandhi

Mumbai: In an embarrassment to Congress, articles in its mouthpiece today criticised Jawaharlal Nehru’s policy on Kashmir issue and alleged that Sonia Gandhi’s father was a “fascist soldier”, leaving the party squirming over the controversy on its Foundation Day.

An unsigned write-up in the Mumbai unit’s journal, coinciding with the party’s 131st foundation day, blamed Nehru for “the state of affairs in Kashmir, China and Tibet” even as another write-up made controversial remarks on party chief Sonia Gandhi, forcing its editor and Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam to order inquiry even as he claimed he was unaware of the content.

Both these articles, which do not bear the name of the writer, have been published in this month’s issue of ‘Congress Darshan’ Hindi edition as a tribute to the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabbhai Patel on his death anniversary on December 15.

The article states that Nehru should have listened to Patel’s views on international affairs and that the relationship between the two leaders remained strained.

“Despite Patel getting the post of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, the relations between the two leaders remained strained, and both had threatened to resign time and again,” the article says.

If Nehru had embraced Patel’s foresight, many problems in international affairs would not have arisen, it adds.

The article cites a letter that Patel purportedly wrote in 1950 to caution Nehru against China’s policy towards Tibet and in which “Patel described China as unfaithful, and a future enemy of India.”

“Had Patel been heard (by Nehru) then, the problems of Kashmir, China, Tibet and Nepal wouldn’t have existed now. Patel opposed Nehru’s move of taking the Kashmir issue to the UNO,” stated the article, adding, “Nehru did not agree with Patel’s views on Nepal.”

Another article, which focuses on the Congress President, describes her early life in great detail, including her “ambition to become an airhostess”, as well as allegation that her father was a member of the Italian forces that lost to the Russians in the World War.

“Sonia Gandhi’s father Stephano Maino was a former fascist soldier,” it alleged.

The write-up also describes how Sonia quickly rose to the position of party president.
“Sonia Gandhi registered as a primary member of the Congress in 1997 and became the party’s president in 62 days. She also made an unsuccessful attempt to form a government,” the article says.

Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief and editor of the journal Sanjay Nirupam said he is not involved in the day-to-day functioning of the magazine and was unaware of the articles.

“I admit the mistake. Inquiry will be initiated against the editorial department which committed the mistake. We will take measures that such a mistake is not repeated,” Nirupam said.

In Delhi, Congress leaders Salman Khurshid and Raj Babbar said that it should be seriously looked into.

“If something like this has come out in the Congress article, then AICC will take it up,” Khurshid said.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said that it was clear that the writer was not aware of history and had no knowledge of the conditions under which Nehru had become the first Prime Minister and the challenges he faced like eradicating poverty.

Top Congress leaders had gathered to mark the Foundation Day at at AICC headquarters in the national capital.

Tortured Kerala youths return home

December 26, 2015 by Nasheman

saudi-video

Thiruvananthapuram: Three Kerala youths, who were allegedly physically tortured by their Saudi employer, returned to their home state early today from Saudi Arabia.

The plight of the three came to light after a Whatsapp video of a Saudi employer allegedly beating them with a wooden plank surfaced. Kerala government and External Affairs Ministry had intervened to help them.

As the trio arrived at the airport here in the wee hours, their relatives and friends welcomed them.

Baiju, Abilash and Vimal Kumar had been taken to Saudi Arabia by a placement agency a couple of months back after promising them job opportunities.

21-year-old Abilash told reporters that he had taken loan to build a house and had hoped that employment abroad will help him clear his loan fast. However, that was not to be.
Their relatives said it was a relief seeing their near ones back safe.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had earlier stated in New Delhi that the three men had been given police protection and the matter was being followed up.

Yeddyurappa should be Karnataka BJP chief, says Sadananda Gowda

December 26, 2015 by Nasheman

D V Sadananda Gowda

Bengaluru: Union Law minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Friday has strongly batted for former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to lead the State BJP.

Speaking to reporters, Gowda said that BSY is the most suitable candidate to lead the State BJP.

Recalling BSY’s tenure as the Chief Minister, Gowda said that it was Yeddyurappa who introduced several pro-people programmes and it is he who struggled to bring BJP to power.

“No doubt about his capacity and he is fit to head the party at the state-level,” he said adding that the final call is of the high command.

Backing the recommendations made by the parliamentary secretariat to double the salary and allowances of MPs he said that at present MPs get about Rs  50,000 as salary and Rs 45,000 as allowances. But while discharging his duty, MP has to cover eight assembly constituencies hence, the salary hike is much needed as it is insufficient, he said.

Gowda also expressed concern over Opposition disrupting during Assembly session and compared it to anti-national activity.

While responding on upcoming Council elections, he said that the BJP would win 15 to 20 seats and opined that Congress will be taught a lesson by the people.

Tremor jolts Kashmir, causes fear and panic

December 26, 2015 by Nasheman

Jammu/Srinagar: An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted Kashmir on Saturday causing widespread fear and panic.

“An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale occurred at 12.44 a.m. The epicentre of the tremor was in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan,” an official of the Met department said here.

“Its coordinates were latitude 36.5 degrees north and longitude 71.2 degrees east. The depth of the quake was 186 Kilometres,” the official added.

People were jolted out of sleep after tremors were felt in Srinagar. In Jammu, residents were in the grip of fear due to the earthquake.

“I Thought some massive explosion had occurred outside our house,” a Jammu resident said.

No loss of life has been reported from anywhere in the state so far.

“It is too early to say as the earthquake occurred after midnight. We are gathering information to be absolutely certain,” said a senior officer of the state government.

More than 45,000 people were killed across divided Kashmir and properties worth billions destroyed in a 7.6 magnitude temblor that hit Jammu and Kashmir on October 8, 2005.

Rape and murder threat: Case filed against 22 Sangh Parivar activists

December 26, 2015 by Nasheman

Vidya Dinker

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru East (Kadri) police have filed FIR against 22 abusers owing allegiance to Sangh Parivar including Bajrang Dal Mangaluru city co-convener Puneet Raj Kottari for posting hate comments against social activist Vidya Dinker.

The hate abusive campaign on Facebook against Ms Dinker, coordinator of Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development, began after she lodged a police complaint against Bajrang Dal activists for forcefully stopping the screening of Shah Rukh Khan starrer Dilwale in Mangaluru.

It was Kottari, who instigated the online hatemongers to target Ms Dinker, by posting a derogatory comment on his Facebook wall against her. After police forced him to remove his abusive post a Facebook page named ‘Veera Kesari’ posted another provocative meme against Ms Dinker and provided an open platform for the miscreants to abuse and intimidate her.

Within a day the post attracted hundreds of abusive comments from Sangh Parivar activists. While most of the saffron activists poured sexually coloured abuses on Ms Dinker a few commenters also threatened to rape and murder her.

The FIR was filed after Ms Dinker lodged a formal complaint against the online abusers. The police said that they are investigating the case.

Modi’s Lahore stopover: Congress suspects business interest

December 26, 2015 by Nasheman

modi-shariff

New Delhi: The Congress on Friday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lahore, saying the ruling BJP had replaced seasoned diplomats with businessmen to achieve its foreign policy goals.

“Has Prime Minister Narendra Modi and [External Affairs Minister] Sushma Swaraj earlier, when she went for the Heart of Asia conference in Islamabad, safeguarded and upheld India’s interests and India’s policy vis-à-vis the Taliban and the terror strikes to destabilise Afghanistan,” asked senior leader Anand Sharma at a press briefing.

“There is a very clear linkage in coming from Kabul to Lahore. The Prime Minister has compromised and surrendered to take personal interests forward,” he said.

Mr. Sharma’s remark was full of suspicion that the Prime Minister seemed to be favouring oligarchy over diplomacy and trading the long-term national interest for short-term business deals.

“It is now in the public domain that he used vested private business interests for a secret meeting with [Pakistan Prime Minister] Nawaz Sharif in Khatmandu, and the same channel he has used for the meeting in Lahore. The concerned industrialist who has a business partnership with the ruling establishment in Pakistan was there for the last two days. This has come out in the open,” he said.

Syed Kirmani to get BCCI Lifetime Achievement Award

December 25, 2015 by Nasheman

The Awards Committee met at Cricket Centre, BCCI headquarters – Mumbai and unanimously nominated Kirmani for Award for 2015.

syed-kirmani

New Delhi:

Former wicket-keeper batsman Syed Kirmani was on Thursday nominated for this year’s Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Awards Committee met at Cricket Centre, BCCI headquarters – Mumbai and unanimously nominated Kirmani for Award for 2015, according to a BCCI release.

The committee consists of BCCI president Shashank Manohar, secretary Anurag Thakur and N Ram, editor – The Hindu.

The BCCI celebrates the birth centenary of Col. Cottari Kanakaiya Nayudu, the country’s first Test captain, by instituting an annual Lifetime Achievement Award, to honour individuals for their unparalleled contribution to Indian cricket, on and off the field.

The Award comprises a trophy, citation and cheque for Rs. 25 lakhs.

Kirmani, who made his Test debut in 1976 against New Zealand, kept wickets against India’s famous spin quartet and did the job remarkably well.

Having started his career as an understudy to Farokh Engineer, Kirmani took over the responsibility and added his charm to the role in a decade-long career. It was thanks to his tenacious approach that he scored two Test centuries in the lower order.

Against England in 1981–82, he did not concede a single bye in three consecutive Tests. Named the best keeper in the 1983 World Cup, it was Kirmani, who shared an unbeaten 126 runs partnership with Kapil Dev against Zimbabwe as the Indian captain went on to register one of India’s greatest wins at Tunbridge Wells.

Kirmani also provided solid support to Sunil Gavaskar in the unbroken 143-run stand for the ninth wicket as Gavaskar made 236 not out, the then top score by an Indian against West Indies in the sixth Test at home.

The Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri in 1982. He was the vice-president of KSCA and also the chairman of the national selection committee.

President, PM, other leaders greet Vajpayee

December 25, 2015 by Nasheman

Atal Bihari Vajpayee

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday led the nation to greet the now ailing former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 91st birthday, wishing him a long life.

“Warm greetings and good wishes to Vajpayeeji on his birthday. May the Almighty bless Vajpayeeji with good health, happiness and a long fruitful life,” the president said in a message.

Mr. Modi, who was visiting Afghanistan, extended birthday greetings “to our beloved Atalji. We salute this great personality who provided exceptional leadership to India at a crucial time. Be it as a party leader, parliamentarian, minister, prime minister, Atalji distinguished himself in every role. This is his speciality.”

One of India’s most popular politicians, Mr. Vajpayee was prime minister three times — first in 1996 (May 16-31) and later for two consecutive stints between March 19, 1998 and May 13, 2004.

In the latter two stints, he headed the National Democratic Alliance governments led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of which he is the founder.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also hailed the BJP veteran: “In a diverse country like ours, Vajpayee is a shining example of tolerance and inspiration for taking everyone along in the public life.”

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also saluted Mr. Vajpayee.

“Vajpayeeji has always been a source of inspiration to me. I pray for his happy and healthy life,” Raman Singh said.

Mr. Chouhan said Mr. Vajpayee was a politician who would not mind taking a two-wheeler or an autorickshaw to reach a venue. “And wherever he went, he won people’s confidence.”

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said: “A very happy birthday to Vajpayee Sahib. A great human being and an amazing prime minister to work for.”

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley described Vajpayee as “my guide and mentor” and said: “May God bless him with good health.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said Mr. Vajpayee — who was prime minister from 1998 to 2004, was an inspiration to him and was also one of India’s best leaders.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh prayed for speedy recovery for Vajpayee, who has been ailing for years.

Central ministers Piyush Goyal, Ravishankar Prasad and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also greeted Vajpayee.

“I pray for his good health and long life,” said Goyal. Naqvi said he was a symbol of good governance and development.

Mr. Vajapyee was first elected to parliament in 1957, and was repeatedly elected to both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He was elected from Lucknow for five times consecutively.

In 1951, Mr. Vajpayee helped to set up the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He was the external affairs minister in 1977-79 when the Janata Party — of which the Jana Sangh was a constituent — ruled the country.

LG questions legality of DDCA probe, Kejriwal hits back

December 25, 2015 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Seeking Centre’s intervention, LG Najeeb Jung has questioned the legality of appointment of inquiry by Arvind Kejriwal Government to probe DDCA issue, triggering a new round of confrontation with the Chief Minister who said the matter was out of the LG’s purview.

“In a communication to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the LG has stated that the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952 empowers only the Centre and state governments to appoint a commission of inquiry. Since, Delhi is a Union Territory, a commission of inquiry may be ordered only with the concurrence of the Centre, through the LG,” sources said.

“Also, the funding for the DDCA comes not only from Delhi but also other states and hence it is not just Delhi Government’s jurisdiction to conduct a probe,” they added.

The LG is also believed to have cited that the inquiry into the CNG fitness kit scam set up by the Kejriwal government earlier was set aside by the Centre on the same ground.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, however, has claimed that the action amounts to “unjustified interference” as the inquiry is “perfectly” legal and Union Minister Arun Jaitley should cooperate with the inquiry commission and stop “misusing” the LG office.

“We are not scared when all the agencies under them including police CBI, DRI are after us, why are they scared with one commission of enquiry,” he added.

Kejriwal also maintained that the Transaction Business Rules (TBR) clarify that this file is not needed to be sent to LG for clearance, tersely adding “he is not a dictator”.

“According to the Constitution, LG has three subjects under him- police, public order and land. According to the TBR, no other file should go to LG for clearance, he is not a dictator,” Kejriwal said.

“The rule says that the commission of enquiry can be instituted by the Cabinet and Legislative Assembly, they are empowered to do so. Raising objections to this is politics to save those who are corrupt,” he said on sidelines of an event.

“Jaitley should cooperate with the commission of enquiry and stop misusing the LG house. I also hope that Rajnath Singh will not try to shield him by obstructing the probe,” he said.

Modi inaugurates new parliament building in Afghanistan

December 25, 2015 by Nasheman

modi

Kabul: Prime Minister Narendra Modi todayinaugurated the Parliament building which has been constructed by India at a cost of USD 90 million here.

The new parliament building in Afghanistan will stand as a symbol of ties between India and Afghanistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after the inauguration ceremony.

“It will stand as an enduring symbol of the ties of emotions and values, of affection and aspirations that bind us in a special relationship,” the prime minister said.

“The great Afghan people waged an epic struggle of courage and resolve to shape their future with vote and debate and not gun and violence.”

Modi said he stands on behalf of “1.25 billion friends in India in admiration for your achievements and in gratitude for your friendship.”

He said the day was special as it was former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday, adding he was “deeply touched” that a block in the new building was named ‘Atal block’.

Earlier, Khaama press reported that Ghani and Modi toured the parliament building, including the main session hall in the presence of guests, including member of the Afghan parliament.

PM has arrived on a visit during which he is expected to hold talks with Afghan leadership, including President Ashraf Ghani.

Modi who flew in the wee hours from Moscow, where he had annual summit talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, was received by Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar and deputy Foreign minister Hekmat Karzai.

“From Russia to Afghanistan. A pre-dawn arrival in Kabul begins a day of engagements with another dost,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

On his arrival Modi said, “delighted to be in Kabul among friends. Will meet Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah and former President Hamid Karzai”.

Modi will be holding talks with Afghan leaders on key bilateral issues, including security co-operation and discuss the ways to help war-torn country where India has committed over two billion assistance.

The Prime Minister will also be inaugurating the Parliament building and expected to address the Afghan lawmakers.

The Parliament building project, which was initially conceived at a cost of USD 45 million, was started by India in 2007 as a mark of friendship and cooperation to help rebuild Afghanistan.

Significantly, prior to the Prime Minister’s visit, India has delivered three Mi 25 attack helicopters to Afghanistan, in what is seen as a shift in its strategy towards the strife-torn country.

Defence sources said that three such choppers have already been delivered to the Afghan government, which will boost its capability against Taliban terrorists.

The Parliament building project, which was initially conceived at a cost of USD 45 million, was started by India in 2007 as a mark of friendship and cooperation to help rebuild Afghanistan.

Situated between historic landmarks King’s Palace “Darulaman” and the Queen’s Palace – the building has elements of Mughal and modern architecture and has Asia’s largest dome as its key feature.

The building will house the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House) with a seating capacity of 294, a 190-seat Meshrano Jirga (Upper House), besides other facilities like conference hall and press room.

Meanwhile, Mi 25 choppers were taken to Afghanistan in a C-17 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force, sources said.

While Afghanistan has repeatedly sought India’s support in beefing up its military’s fighting capability in terms of machinery, India had shied away till now.

The development came after the recent visit of Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar to New Delhi.

Afghanistan has till now been dependent on the US air support in its operations against the Taliban.

However, with the American forces pulling out that country to a large extent, the Afghan forces will be using the Mi 25 now.
