BSF aircraft crashes near Delhi airport, all 10 on board killed

December 22, 2015 by Nasheman

BSF

New Delhi: All the 10 people on board a small Ranchi-bound BSF plane carrying technical personnel were killed when it crashed near Dwarka today and burst into flames just outside the IGI airport here shortly after take-off.

Aviation sources said the accident happened at around 9.50 am when the twin-engine Superking plane crashed into the airport boundary wall near a railway track and landed in a sewage treatment plant while returning back apparently due to a technical problem five minutes after it took off for Ranchi.

The aircraft lost contact with the Air Traffic Control, at 9.50 am, they said. “It is unfortunate that all 10 people including the pilots have died in the crash,” Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma said. There were two pilots on board.

“It is a matter of probe what led to the crash. We can only tell after the inquiry what were the reasons or lapses resulted in this incident,” he added.

BSF sources said the technicians were on their way to Ranchi to repair a helicopter.
The DG-level talks between India and Bangladesh scheduled today in Dhaka have been cancelled in the wake of the crash, according to BSF sources.

Police said six bodies have been recovered from the crash site. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the crash. “Pained by the loss of lives in the BSF plane crash in Delhi. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased,” he said.

Eyewitnesses said the plane hit a wall outside the technical area of the airport before bursting into flames and then crashed into a water body.

“We saw a plane spiralling down which crashed near the wall where work was going on. I could sport one body. A labourer who was working was also injured,” an eye witness Suraj said.

The area was engulfed in dense smoke and fire with pieces of aircraft spread around.
Delhi Fire Service chief A K Sharma said 15 tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames.

An inquiry has been ordered by the Civil Aviation Ministry. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh briefed the Prime Minister about the crash and rushed to the crash site.

The 10 on board the ill-fated aircraft comprised the pilot, who was a second-in-command rank officer of SIB, the co-pilot, who is a Deputy Commandent, six technicians, one engineer and one crew member.

Civil Aviation Secretary R N Choubey said authorities were in the process of setting up a Committee of Inquiry to probe the mishap.

“We are trying to identify a pilot who has flown the type of aircraft that has crashed,” he said.

Karimnagar: In a frenzied sword attack, a 28-year-old software engineer today left 22 people including his parents and three constables injured before being fatally shot by police.

The attacker’s parents and an auto driver are in a critical condition. The policemen, who suffered serious injuries as they tried to stop him, and the other wounded were also undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

According to Karimnagar Deputy Superintendent of Police J Rama Rao, the trouble began at 7 AM after Balvinder Singh alias Babloo (28), of Laxmi Nagar locality in Karimnagar town, entered into an altercation with his parents –Amruth Singh and Baby Kaur–and allegedly attacked them with a sword.

Leaving his parents lying unconscious in a pool of blood, Balvinder ran out of his house wielding the sword and began randomly attacking passers-by and people on the road, police alleged.

It was a scary scene as an auto-driver and a dozen other victims were bleeding profusely, eyewitnesses said.

As the police patrol team reached the spot, Balvinder attacked three constables and wounded them seriously.

Subsequently, police opened fire.

Balvinder was then taken into custody and shifted to Government District Head Quarters hospital here, where he died within three hours of being admitted, hospital sources said.

Balvinder was working in a company in Bangalore.

His parents and the injured auto driver Narayana, also admitted in the same hospital, are said to be in a critical condition.

Further investigations are underway, the DSP said.

Rajya Sabha takes up Juvenile Justice bill for discussion

December 22, 2015 by Nasheman

rajya Sabha

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday took up for discussion the Juvenile Justice amendment bill, a day after members cutting across party lines agreed that the important legislation should be taken up immediately.

The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, 2014, provides for the trial of those between 16-18 years as adults for heinous offences. Also, anyone between the age of 16-18 who commits a less serious offence may be tried as an adult if he is apprehended after he attains the age of 21.

Giving out the bill’s details, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said borstals — a custodial institution for young offenders — would be set up under the proposed law to house juveniles accused of heinous crime.

“They (juvenile convicts) will not stay with adults in jails meant for adults… They will be kept in borstals. It does not exist at present… it will be created,” the minister said.

The convicted juvenile will stay in borstals till they attain the age of 21, and will be evaluated to decide whether they should be released.

“There will be a review… if they still have a criminal bent of mind, they will serve the complete sentence,” said the minister.

Maneka Gandhi said juvenile crime was being encouraged by the existing law.

“Juveniles’ involvement in crime is increasing the fastest. Children walk into police stations and say we have murdered… send us to a juvenile home,” the minister said.

Pointing out that even children committed crime against other children, she wondered: “Are we going to protect the victim or the criminal?”

“It (the bill) will stop a 16-year-old from saying ‘I have burnt a jhuggi. Send me to juvenile justice (board)’. ‘Or I have raped, murdered, send me to JJ…’,” Maneka Gandhi said.

Bengaluru: “I am opposed to death penalty and I think the RS did the right thing by sending the proposal in the case of the juvenile in Delhi rape case to a Select Committee.

Even while fighting the Gujarat riot cases, there was pressure that we should seek the death penalty for the accused,” said social activist Teesta Setalvad, who spoke to Nasheman.in recently on a private visit to Bengaluru.

Setalvad claimed that the current BJP government, is trying to settle score with her and other activists for opposing them.

DDCA row: Jaitley files defamation complaint against Kejriwal

December 21, 2015 by Nasheman

arun jaitley

New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday filed a criminal defamation complaint against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other AAP leaders for making what he said were false allegations about irregularities in the DDCA.

Jaitley said the allegations levelled by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders will cause “irreversible damage to his reputation”.

Advocate Sidharth Luthra told the court that the minister did not take “a single penny” from the Delhi and District Cricket Association and that Kejriwal and AAP leaders had made defamatory and baseless charges.

“No member of the family of Jaitely is involved in any capacity with the companies involved in the DDCA case,” Luthra told the court.

He cited Facebook and Twitter posts of AAP leaders to show how Jaitley was defamed.

In his complaint against Kejriwal, Jaitley also named AAP leaders Kumar Vishwas, Raghav Chadha, Ashutosh, Sanjay Singh and Deepak Bajpai.

Jaitley, who headed the DDCA for 13 years till 2013, has been accused of corruption by Delhi’s ruling AAP. He has denied the charges.

Kejriwal has demanded that Jaitley must resign from the government or be removed as finance minister to enable an independent probe into the DDCA affairs.

Dec 16 gang-rape: SC dismisses plea against release of juvenile convict

December 21, 2015 by Nasheman

Delhi-gang-rape-juvenile

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the plea to stay the release of the 20-year-old who was convicted for the December 16, 2012 gang rape and was released from a remand home on Sunday.

The apex court in its judgement said to DCW: ‘We share your concern but under existing law, detention cannot go beyond 3 years’.

The Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal, had approached the Supreme Court to stay release of the juvenile convict, who is now 20 years old and was known to be the most brutal of the attackers.

“How many more Nirbhayas will we create before we change the system. Nirbhayas rapist should not be released under any circumstances today,” Maliwal tweeted.

“SC accepted petition. Matter was listed on Monday as Item No 3. Case subjudice now. Nirbhaya rapist should not be released until case heard,” Maliwal said in another tweet.

A vacation bench comprising Justices A K Goel and U U Lalit in their order pronounced at 2 AM on Sunday, posted the matter for hearing on Monday.

The Special Leave Petition filed by DCW against the order of the Delhi High Court, which refused to restrain the release of the convict, was referred by the Chief Justice of India T S Thakur before the vacation bench.

After the order by the court, DCW chairperson and the lawyers of the women’s panel hoped that since the matter has become sub judice, the government and Delhi Police will not release the juvenile offender today as scheduled.

The juvenile was moved out of Delhi on Saturday even as distraught parents of the victim strongly kept on opposing his release. The parents were briefly detained by the police after they held a protest against the convict’s release.

Sources said that the convict was taken to an undisclosed location from a correction home in North Delhi amid concerns that there was threat to his life.

They said the juvenile has been kept under observation of an NGO under protection of Delhi Police.

VHP’s first lot of stones for Ram Temple arrives in Ayodhya

December 21, 2015 by Nasheman

vhp

Ayodhya: Almost six months after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) announced its nationwide drive to collect stones for construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, two trucks of stones arrived in the temple city on Sunday.

“Two trucks of stones have been unloaded at Ram Sewak Puram, a VHP property in Ayodhya, and ‘Shila Pujan’ (praying of the stones) has been performed by Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, the president of Ram Janam Bhumi Nyas,” VHP spokesman Sharad Sharma said.

Meanwhile, Mahant Nritya Gopal Das told PTI that there was a “signal” from the Modi government that the temple will be built “now”.

“Now, the time has come for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Lots of stones arrived today in Ayodhya and their arrival will continue. We have signals from Modi government that Mandir (temple) construction would be done now,” he said.

Reacting to the arrival of stones at the VHP headquarters, Faizabad Senior Superintendent of Police Mohit Gupta said that the police was monitoring the situation.

“We are monitoring all the developments minutely. Stones have arrived and being kept in a private premises. Due to this development, if their was any breach in peace or communal harmony we will definitely take action,” he said.

Asserting its resolve to build the Ram temple, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had in June announced a nationwide drive to collect stones for construction of the temple.

“About 2.25 lakhs cubic ft of stones are required for the construction of the Ram temple and about 1.25 lakh cubic ft of stones are ready at the VHP’s headquarter in Ayodhya. The rest one lakh cubic ft stones would be collected nationwide from Hindu devotees,” VHP leader Ashok Singhal, who died last month in Gurgaon, had said.

The announcement had met with a quick reaction from the administration, which had said that it would oppose the move as the matter was sub judice.

Principal Secretary (Home) Devashish Panda had said that the Uttar Pradesh government would not allow arrival of stones in Ayodhya for construction of Ram Temple.

“Since the matter is sub judice, the government will not allow starting of any new tradition regarding Ayodhya issue,” he had said.

Don’t speak against India, Sharif tells his ministers

December 19, 2015 by Nasheman

Nawaz-Sharif

Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has stopped his ministers from giving anti-India statements so that the peace process is not hit, an official said.

A close aide to Sharif said on Friday that the ministers and senior officials had been asked not to issue any statement that could damage the peace process.

“There will be statements only that encourage the dialogue process rather than digging out the past. The PM has asked the close aides and cabinet members to promote peace,” The Nation quoted an official as saying.

He said Sharif was optimistic about better ties with India, which would benefit the whole region.

Sharif was annoyed by statements from India that New Delhi only wanted to discuss Pakistan occupied Kashmir in talks, but understands this is not Inidan government’s policy, the official added.

Sharif, the official said, wanted to give top priority to Kashmir, terrorism and trade when the two sides discuss peace.

Another official said Sharif and the military leadership were on the same page to make peace with India.

“There is no difference of opinion and both agree that there should be no compromise on the stated position on key issues,” he added.

An interaction between Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Paris and subsequent meeting of the National Security Advisors in Bangkok set the pace for improvement in the bilateral ties.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also visited Pakistan on December 8 to attend the Heart of Asia conference.

She met Sharif and his advisor on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz on the sidelines of the conference.

It is expected that Sharif and Modi will meet again in Switzerland in January. The two leaders will be together on January 20 to attend the 46th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos-Klosters.

India’s outgoing High Commissioner to Pakistan TCA Raghavan on Thursday said the relations between the two countries were heading towards betterment.

Analysts said it was a positive development that Pakistan and India agreed to resume comprehensive dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues.

HC quashes probe against Yeddyurappa, DK Shivkumar in land case

December 19, 2015 by Nasheman

Yeddyurappa, DK Shivkumar

Bengaluru: Karnataka High Court on Friday quashed the Lokayukta proceedings against BJP vice-president and former Chief Minister B.S Yeddyurappa and Energy minister D K Shivkumar.

Two separate complaints were filed by social activist T.J. Abraham and Kabbale Gowda, alleging that Shivkumar had purchased 4.2 acres of land at Benniganahalli from the original owner, despite it being acquired by the BDA, and had allegedly got it de-notified with the help of the then chief minister Yeddyurappa.

Following the complaints, Yeddyurappa and Shivkumar had filed petitions seeking quashing of the proceedings.

In a big relief, on Friday, Justice Anand Byrareddy, in his verdict pronounced that the allegations leveled against the petitioners did not constitute criminal acts.
