January 20, 2015 by Nasheman

Bhatkal

Bhatkal: The four youths from Bhatkal, who were arrested recently on alleged terror charges, were on Monday brought to Bhatkal by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) to “collect evidence”.

The team, headed by Assistant Commissioner Omkaraiah, went to the house of arrested Dr. Syed Ismail Afaq and Abdus Saboor in the Tengengundi Cross area.

The team also reportedly visited the house of another youth Afeef Mota and questioned him. However, he was not picked up. The team is also said to have visited the Tengengundi port. The team, comprising four officials, reached the city at 4.30 pm. They did not speak to the media.

Meanwhile, Home Minister KJ George has claimed that the Bangalore city police have not framed anyone in the four terror suspects’ arrest. “The case is under investigation and we cannot reveal more details at this stage. He clarified the Bangalore city police have followed the standard proce dure while raiding the house from where the explosives were seized in Bhatkal. “Our police have arrested the people involved in terror activities. We have not framed anybody in the case. The charge sheet will reveal their role in a few days,” George said.

His statement came, after allegations of police framing the youths were made by prime accused Dr. Syed Ismail Afaq’s defense counsel Advocate Sultan Beary recently at a press conference.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner M N Reddi said that they had not zeroed in on any organisation responsible for the Church Street blast, but claimed that the investigation was on the right track.

Mangaluru: Bengaluru police have arrested a man from Bhatkal for alleged terror links.

The person, said to be identified as Riyaz (32), a resident of Makhdoom Colony, Bhatkal was arrested from Mangalore International Airport at around 11.30 pm on Saturday January 10.

Riyaz was about to board the Jet Airways flight to Dubai when he was apprehended by the Bengaluru police.

It is said that the Bengaluru police with the help of Mangaluru CCB police arrested Riyaz based on the alleged information provided by the three persons from Bhatkal who were arrested on January 8.

He has been taken to Bengaluru for further investigation, sources said.

‘He’s innocent’

Khaja Sayeedi, the father of Riyaz Ahmed, said that the arrest of his son has surprised him.

Riyaz was working at a hardware shop there. Sayeedi said that he had come home on December 8. Riyaz’s wife had delivered a baby girl 18 days ago. He was married 18 months ago. He had been living in Dubai for the last 10 years.

“Riyaz was supposed to return to Dubai three days ago, but as we had no money for the ticket, his journey got postponed. We came to know about his arrest only through the media,” he said.

Sayeedi claimed that his son was innocent and that he never indulged in such activities and that he had been arrested without any reason.

Muslim body wants CCB, NIA to come clean on raids

Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem, a social organisation run by Bhatkal Muslims, has sought to know why local leaders were not taken into confidence if the raid party knew that explosives were stored in a house in the town. Why were neighbours and the local media not informed during the raids, the Tanzeem wants to know.

It has sought to know what did the bag taken inside the house, with the help of the local police, contain. What was the need for the raid party to remain inside the small house for seven to eight hours by closing the door? the Tanzeem questioned.

It now plans to submit memorandum to the chief minister.

Bengaluru: Angry parents clashed with the police, set vehicles on fire and pelted stones after an eight-year-old girl complained of sexual harassment by a physical education teacher in a school in Bengaluru. The accused Krishna has been taken into custody.

TV reports said she was allegedly also told to remove her hijab.

Angry parents and local residents in Bangalore burned school property and vehicles today and thrashed a teacher who was accused of molesting an 8-year-old.

The man, a physical education instructor at the private school located in West Bangalore, has been taken into police custody.

According to eyewitnesses, angry protestors set vehicles on fire when the police resisted and ransacked the school.

The situation is now under control and the area has been cordoned off, the report stated. Media channels quoted Police Commissioner M N Reddi, who rushed to the spot, as saying that “there should be no instant justice”, and that the “courts would decide on the punishment for the accused”.

“We have taken the accused into custody. We will take stringent action in the incident,” the Police Commissioner said. Reddi said “if anything unlawful takes place across the city, action will be taken.”

This is the second time this week that these areas have witnessed mass street violence.

A tense situation also prevailed during the Eid Milad celebrations over animal carcasses that were found near a place of worship. It wasn’t long before Wednesday’s episode — which started as a protest by the parents of the minor — degenerated into a riot with communal overtones.

The issue began to take on a communal colour because the alleged perpetrator and the victim are from different religious communities.

Mehdi Masroor Biswas sent to judicial custody

January 3, 2015 by Nasheman

Mehdi Masroor Biswas

Bengaluru: A special court Friday sent ISIS Twitter handler Mehdi Masroor Biswas to 14 day judicial custody after his 15-day police custody expired, a top police official said.

“Our probe team has collected sufficient evidence from him (Mehdi) on his pro-ISIS propaganda for the banned terrorist outfit (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) during his police custody over the last two weeks,” city Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi told reporters here.

The 24-year-old executive in a private firm was arrested Dec 14 and a case was registered against him under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act for waging war against a friendly country.

“With the help of social media experts, we have so far analysed about 12,000 messages Mehdi tweeted/posted on his Facebook account, in which he encouraged youth to join ISIS though it is difficult to establish if recruitment took place,” Reddi said.

British News Channel 4 Dec 11 unmasked Mehdi as a radical supporter of ISIS through social media and Twitter handler @ShamiWitness where he was regularly tweeting from here on the group’s unlawful activities in Iraq and Syria.

“Investigation so far has revealed that Mehdi is a propagandist of ISIS ideology and has been instrumental in influencing minds against our friendly countries and against whom the terror group is at war,” Reddi said.

Mehdi, who hails from Gopalpur town in West Bengal’s Nadia district, is employed in the foods division of the Kolkata-based ITC Ltd here.

“We know Mehdi was in touch with one combatant in Iraq and was of some help to him, informing him of movement of forces and availability of passages. He is a highly radicalised person and has deep knowledge of what he was doing,” Reddi said.

Mehdi confessed to the investigation team that he had been operating the Twitter account after he got interested in the developments of the Levantine region comprising Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Gaza Strip, Egypt and Libya.

He has about 17,000 Twitter followers and used to aggressively tweet by collecting information and watching developments in the desert region.

Mehdi’s Twitter handler was shut Dec 12 after the news channel revealed his identity and reported about the terror activities he was carrying in the virtual world beyond office hours.

Bangaloreans herald New Year amid tight security

January 1, 2015 by Nasheman

bangalore-new-year

Bengaluru: Thousands of Bangaloreans heralded New Year early Thursday, cheering, dancing, hooting, whistling, bursting crackers and greeting each other amid tight security across this tech hub.

Undeterred by the presence of hundreds of police personnel, heightened vigil and CCTV cameras in downtown, about 8,000 people ushered in 2015 by milling around the up-market M.G. Road, fashionable Brigade Road, posh Lavelle Road, serene Cubbon Road and the bustling Commercial Street, which were lit up for the occasion.

Braving wintry chill and overlooking restrictions imposed by police to maintain law and order, young techies, college students, professionals and boys and girls jostled for space to do a jig, dance to rock music or swing to lilting filmy songs.

“The New Year fest has been peaceful though noisy. No untoward incident reported from anywhere in the city. People dispersed orderly after partying without fear from public venues,” Additional Police Commissioner Alok Kumar told IANS later.

As a precautionary measure and in view of the Dec 28 minor blast near a restaurant on upscale Church Street in the city centre, police directed all pubs, bars, eateries and hotels to close at 1 a.m. instead of 2 a.m.

“We extended closure timing of pubs, bars, eateries and hotels to 1am from 11:30 p.m. Wednesday so as to allow people enjoy the New Year fest. It’s a great relief all agreed to abide by the order,” Kumar said.

About 3,000 police personnel, including contingents from the city armed constabulary, the rapid action force and the state reserve force were deployed in the central business district to ensure peaceful celebration of the New Year.

Apart from banning parking and vehicular traffic from 8 p.m. till 1 a.m. in downtown, major inter-sections and main thoroughfares, driving on all flyovers across the city were blocked till 6am to prevent drunken driving and drag racing.

Mehdi Masroor Biswas's police custody extended by 15 days

December 19, 2014 by Nasheman

Mehdi Masroor Biswas

Bengaluru: A court here Thursday extended the police custody of alleged Islamic State (IS) supporter Mehdi Masroor Biswas by 15 days for further interrogation on charges of waging war against a country which is at peace with India, police said.

“We produced Mehdi in the sessions court on expiry of his five-day custody to further interrogate him on his postings in the social media and Twitter handle (@ShamiWitness), as part of our investigation. We have secured his custody for another 15 days up to Jan 2,” city police commissioner M.N. Reddi told reporters.

Police registered a criminal case Dec 13 against Biswas under specific sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act for waging war against any Asiatic power in alliance or at peace with India.

A British news channel Dec 11 unmasked the city-based 24-year-old executive as a radical supporter of the IS through social media and Twitter.

“The investigation so far has revealed that Biswas is a propagandist of IS ideology and has been instrumental in influencing minds against our friendly countries and against whom the terror group is at war,” Reddi said.

Biswas, who hails from Gopalpur town in West Bengal’s Nadia district, is employed in the foods division of a Kolkata-based company in Bengaluru.

He confessed that he was operating the Twitter account after he got interested in the developments of the Levantine region comprising Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Gaza Strip, Egypt and Libya.

His parents – Mikhael Biswas and Mamtaz Begum – who arrived in Bengaluru Wednesday from Kolkata, were allowed to meet their son at an undisclosed place, as he has been in police custody since Dec 14.

“His parents also met me and shared their concerns over his alleged involvement with the IS terror activities through the social media. I have assured them that our investigation would be impartial, unbiased and objective,” Reddi said.

It was Sangliana's daughter, not the 'burqa-clad' women who started the altercation, say police

December 10, 2014 by Nasheman

Rachel Sangliana

Rachel Sangliana

Bengaluru: City Police Commissioner M N Reddy rubbished claims made by former city police commissioner H T Sangliana’s daughter Rachel, that she was racially abused by two unidentified women.

Reddy told reporters that it was not a case of racial abuse, but an altercation involving Rachel and the two women.

Citing a senior police officer, Deccan Herald reported that the police sent a team to the mall, where the incident took place. “Eyewitnesses told the police that it was Rachel who triggered the incident.”

“Rachel abused the women and they retaliated. Nobody in the mall ever indulged in racial abuse,” the police said.

“We requested her to lodge a complaint but she refused to do so. She said there was no need for the complaint, thanked the police and went away,” the officer is told to have said.

Rachel had earlier claimed that two burqa-clad women had attacked her at a mall. She had also claimed that she was beaten up and that she sustained injuries on the head and face. She alleged that the women had called her a Chinese woman and said that a lesson should be taught to outsiders in Karnataka.

Background check made compulsory for Bengaluru cab drivers

December 10, 2014 by Nasheman

Bangalore Taxi

Bengaluru: Police Tuesday made background check compulsory for cab drivers to ensure safety and security of citizens, especially women using taxi service for commuting across the city, a top official said.

“We have directed all taxi operators in the city to do a thorough background check of drivers employed with them and not to employ any drivers without verifying their service record with us,” Bengaluru police commissioner M N Reddi told reporters here.

The decision was taken at a meeting state transport commissioner Ramegowda had with senior police officials, cab operators and taxi unions here in the wake of an alleged rape of an woman executive by a cab driver in Delhi December 5.

“Cab operators and taxi owners will be liable if they are found employing drivers without background check,” Reddi said.

“They must submit a list of their drivers (employed) to the jurisdictional police stations with a copy of their (drivers’) profile, including details of driving licence, temporary and permanent residential address, educational qualification, mobile number and a health certificate to ensure their professional conduct.”

Reddi told cab operators and taxi owners that their permit would be suspended by the transport department if customers lodge serious complaints against drivers of misbehaving, rash driving, using foul language or acts of criminal misconduct.

Meanwhile, Ramegowda instructed officials of the regional transport offices (RTO) across the city to conduct regular checks on cab drivers and suspend their licences if they do not carry the requisite documents, including insurance cover and registration certificate.
