BJP leader Prabhakar Kore wants separate statehood for North Karnataka

April 18, 2015 by Nasheman

Prabhakar-Kore

Belagavi: BJP leader and Rajya Sabha Member Prabhakar Kore has warned that he would be forced to support the call for separate statehood for North Karnataka if the State government failed to recommend Belagavi for the establishment of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

The BJP MP was speaking at a meeting of elected representatives and professionals organised by a non-political Professional Forum to discuss the issue.

Expressing strong displeasure over no mention of Belagavi among the list of districts and probable locations to be recommended for establishing the IIT, Kore said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had expressed his willingness to establish the premier technology institute either in Dharwad, Raichur or Mysuru. “What was the problem in recommending Belagavi? Siddaramaiah always adopts anti-north Karnataka stand,” he alleged.

Let the government recommend Belagavi and the center shall take a final call, he stated. He also warned that failure to do so would stabilise the demand for bifurcation of the State.

Karnataka withdraws anti-cow and cattle slaughter Bills

Belagavi: The Karnataka Assembly today was adjourned sine die without transacting any business as BJP members staged a dharna demanding resignation of “tainted” ministers and rapping Congress government for withdrawing the stringent Cow Slaughter Prevention Bill.

As proceedings of the last day of the 10-day session began, BJP members staged dharna in the well shouting slogans against the government, accusing it of protecting “tainted” ministers and demanded their resignation for their alleged involvement in corruption.

BJP members led by Jagadish Shettar wanted discussion on corruption charges against Ministers Qamarul Islam, H S Mahadeva Prasad, and Dinesh Gundu Rao, under adjournment motion.

Speaker Kagodu Thimappa, who yesterday had rejected BJP’s demand saying the matter was in courts, did not pay heed to the protesting members and went about the business of the day.

BJP also slammed the Congress government for withdrawing the Cow Slaughter Prevention Bill, passed during its rule.

The Congress government last August had reversed the previous BJP government’s decision that had made the cow slaughter law stringent.

The government had decided to restore the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964, that governs the slaughter of cattle in the state.

A Bill passed by both the Houses of the Legislature during BJP rule had widened the definition of cattle, made punishment harsher and increased the age of animal to be slaughtered but it did not receive the Presidential assent.

Congress, which was in the opposition then with Siddaramaiah as its leader, had opposed the legislation, saying it would affect beef-eaters and persons engaged in cattle transportation.

Countering BJP’s protest, Congress members raised slogans against them, saying the party was anti-North Karnataka and they were least interested in discussing problems pertaining to the region.

Despite the din, the Speaker proceeded with further business like tabling Lake Conservation and Development and Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments (Amendment) bills.

As the ruckus continued, Thimappa adjourned the House sine die.

BJP MLA’s henchman strips, thrashes youth for supporting love marriage

November 15, 2014 by Nasheman

Suresh Maruti Gatige

Belagavi: A notorious henchman of a BJP MLA has been caught on camera, assaulting and brutally thrashing two young men with hockey sticks after stripping them to the skin.

The barbaric incident which reportedly took place on November 2, came to light only when the hair-raising video footages, reached a few media persons this week. TV news channels on Friday showed visuals where Suresh Maruti Gatige, the henchman of Belagavi (Rural) BJP MLA Sanjay Patil, was thrashing the helpless youngsters.

A known miscreant of Sangh Parivar, Gatige punished the two for allegedly supporting their friend’s love marriage with a girl related to the accused. He thrashed both of them so brutally that a part of the hockey was also broken. Both the victims are said to be the natives of Kolhapur district of Maharashtra.

According to reliable sources, the local police were initially reluctant to file case against the culprit. When the father of one of the victims approached a police station in Kolhapur, the police refused to file the case by passing it off by claiming that the incident happened in Karnataka, so the case will be filed there only.

Finally, the case was registered on November 10 at Kakti police station in Karnataka, but police did not initiate any against the accused. However, media pressure gradually forced the police to arrested Suresh Gatige along with four others.

According to senior police officials, the other accused in the case are Digamber Jothiba Kavanewadkar, Jothiba Krishna Gundakal, Namdev Chaloba Bamne and Maruti Subbarao Savanth. All are from Khudanur of Chandgad taluk of Kolhapur district, and were arrested following a complaint filed by the victim, Anil to the Inspector-General of Police (Northern Range) Bhaskar Rao.

Witnesses

Preliminary investigations suggest that the victims- Anil and his friend, Ganesh, both from Khudanur- were witnesses to the registered marriage of Shubhangi and Prabhakar Ashok Vaddar.

The relatives of the girl, who were opposed to the marriage, kidnapped the witnesses from Chandgad and brought them to a farmhouse near Uchagaon village in Belagavi taluk on November 3.

The accused assaulted Anil and Ganesh with a hockey stick. One of them videographed the assault and threatened them if they informed the police.

Meanwhile, MLA Sanjay Patil has denied having any role in the incident, or any connection with the accused. He has said the accused was from Kolhapur district of Maharashtra and was visiting Belagavi.

It's official: Bangalore is now Bengaluru; 11 other Karnataka cities renamed

Bangalore: Bangalore is now officially Bengaluru. Twelve cities in Karnataka woke up to new names on Saturday, which is also the 59th Karnataka Rajyotsava.

The state government issued a special gazette notification on Friday to bring the new names into effect from Saturday. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reportedly announced the change of names of the 12 cities, from his residence, according to The Hindu.

Now, Mangalore will be called Mangaluru, Bellary will be called Ballari, Belgaum will be called Belagavi, Hubli has become Hubballi, Tumkur is Tumakuru, Bijapur has changed to Vijapura, Chikmagalur to Chikkamagaluru, Gulbarga to Kalaburagi, Hospet to Hosapete and Shimoga will now be known as Shivamogga.

Bengaluru is said to be a derivation from the older name Benda-Kaal-Uru, which means ‘the city of boiled beans’.

“We have changed the names. It is now left to institutions and government bodies to make suitable changes,” law and parliamentary affairs minister T.B. Jayachandra was quoted saying by The Hindu.

While authorities have suggested that institutions must adopt the new names, some, such as the Bangalore University, are not keen.

“The name change applies only to cities and not to the institution,” Bangalore University vice-chancellor B Thimme Gowda told The New Indian Express. “When names of cities like Madras and Bombay were changed, university names remained the same,” he said.

Gowda added that the university had not received any communication on this from the government.

The central government approved the renaming of 12 Karnataka cities on 17 October, eight years after the first proposal by the state government was put forth. The ministry of home affairs formally cleared the proposal.

It was late Jnanpith awardee U R Ananthamurthy who first brought up the idea of renaming Bangalore during Karnataka’s golden jubilee in December 2005, which he suggested to then chief minister N Dharam Singh.

“I want Brand Bangalore to become Brand Bengaluru. I want the distinctive Kannada syllable ‘u’ to be on the lips of people all over the world. Let this bit of ‘ourness’ be part of our international presence,” Ananthamurthy, who passed away in August, had said, as reported by Bangalore Mirror.
