I still watch Salman Khan’s movies; No benefit for me if he is punished, says victim

May 7, 2015 by Nasheman

abdullah-rauf-shaikh

Mumbai: “Compensation matters more than conviction,” say the victims of the 2002 hit-and-run case in which Bollywood star Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Abdullah Rauf Shaikh, who lost a leg in the accident, said, “Nobody came to visit me in the last 13 years. I am forced to do petty jobs to support my family and face a lot of problems.” “However, I have no hard feelings for him (Salman).

I still watch his movies,” he said, adding they were not pressurised by anyone. “Compensation matters more than conviction, my health and work suffered,” Shaikh said.

“If Salman is punished, I will not be benefited in any way as neither my leg will heal nor my problems would go away. Instead if they compensate us then we do not have any problem,” he said, recalling that he was 22 years old when he lost his leg in the incident.

The wife of Nurullah Mehboob Sharif, who died in the accident, said, “We were told we will get a compensation of Rs 10 lakh, but what will we do of that amount at this time of inflation.” She said that she would be benefited if her son gets a job.

Salman Khan gets two days interim bail

May 6, 2015 by Nasheman

salman-khan

Mumbai: Supreme Court lawyer Harish Salve, who represented Salman, challenged the sessions court order of a five year sentence, in the High Court. “Have received only operative part of the order. You cannot put someone in jail without a proper court order,” Salve argues.

Bombay High has now granted a 2-day interim bail to Salman.

Salve argued that a convict cannot be put in jail without a proper order. Salve argued his client has not got the complete order yet. He argued that Salman had received only the operative part of the order.

This means Salman Khan can stay out of jail till Friday, May 8, which is also when the Bombay High Court goes on vacation.

Huge relief for Salman Khan, his family and friends. Salman is still at the sessions court. His sisters Alvira and Arpita are at the Bombay High Court.

Salman Khan gets 5-year rigorous imprisonment in hit-and-run case

May 6, 2015 by Nasheman

salman-khan-mumbai-court

Mumbai: Salman Khan was today sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment by a Mumbai sessions court, which convicted him of culpable homicide in the 2002 hit-and-run case, dealing a big blow to the Bollywood superstar.

Judge D W Deshpande, who held the 49-year-old actor guilty of “all charges”, including driving under influence of liquor and not possessing a driving licence, pronounced the sentence after a 45-minute adjournment of the proceedings.

A big crowd, mostly of Salman’s fans, thronged around the court located in Fort area of south Mumbai.

The actor, who had fought back tears after being convicted, looked calm and composed as the judgement was read out to him in the presence of his close family members.

The superstar’s brothers Arbaaz and Sohail and sister Arpita were present in the court on the judgement day, which came after a long drawn legal process.

Dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans, the actor arrived in the jam-packed courtroom minutes before the proceedings began in the morning.

Sessions court judge D W Deshpande ruled “all charges” against the actor have been proved, including the stringent charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, besides various other offences, including rash and negligent driving and driving under influence of liquor.

The judge held that the actor also did not have a driving licence. The prosecution had alleged that Khan was driving without holding a licence and, to buttress its charge, produced RTO records to show that the actor had procured a licence only in 2004, two years after the tragedy.

The court, while pronouncing the judgement, drew parallels with the Alistair Pereira and Sanjeev Nanda BMW cases.
Asked if he had to say anything about the verdict, Salman denied the charge that he was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Salman had earlier been tried for the lesser offence of causing death by rash and negligent driving which attracts a lighter punishment of imprisonment upto two years.

After examining several witnesses, a Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate had called off the trial midway in 2012 and slapped the serious charge of culpable homicide against the actor before committing the matter to the sessions court.

The court, while convicting the hugely popular actor, upheld the prosecution’s contention that he was at the wheel when his Toyota Land Cruiser ran over five people sleeping on the pavement outside American Express bakery in suburban Bandra, killing one person and wounding four.

"My upcoming movie 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' is a comic entertainer:" Sunny Leone

May 5, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

sunny-leone

Met Sunny Leone recently at the promotional event of her upcoming film namely Devang Dholakia’s ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ at the Levo Restaurant in Model Town, Andheri, Mumbai. Right at the outset she came across as a very warm, vivacious & vibrant persona. After winning the hearts of the International & the regional audiences, in films like ‘The Girl Next Door’, ‘Pirate’s Blood’, ‘The Virginity Hit’ et al & ‘DK’ (Kannada), ‘Vadacurry’ (Tamil), ‘Current Theega’ (Telugu) et al, Karanjeet Kaur Vohra (Her Birth name) aka Sunny Leone (Her screen name) is an American – Canadian actress now literally making the Indian cine goers dance to her tunes in her Bollywood films like ‘Jism 2’, ‘Shootout At Wadala’, ‘Jack Pot’, ‘Ragini MMS 2’, ‘Hate Story 2’, ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ and now she will repeat history with Devang Dholakia’s ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’. Just with more than half a dozen film’s release Sunny Leone has became an actress to be reckoned with, in fact a household name amongst the Indian audiences not to forget the fact that she had already charmed her way into the hearts of the International audiences and by the way she has now also settled down into a blissful marital life with her better half Daniel Webber who now also manages both her personal as well as professional affairs and of course Daniel Webber was himself launched as an actor in a recently announced Bollywood film ‘Dangerous Husn’. How Symbolic!!!

To set the ball rolling in your court, can we say that Sunny Leone is content with her Bollywoodian career so far?

You bet I am. As in my half a dozen Bollywoodian films released so far I have got the meatiest roles that I could really sink my teeth into. What more could I ask for? I have already enacted diverse roles, roles that not only a newbie actress but an actress of repute would die for. And I think my recent best was in Ahmed Khan & Bobby Khan’s ‘Ek Paheli Leela’. And wait & watch! The crowning glory of my histrionics per se would be in my upcoming film namely Devang Dholakia’s ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’.

So would you like to elaborate on what is ‘Kuch Kuch Locha hai’ all about?

My upcoming movie ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ is a comic entertainer, a jolly good film & a roller coaster ride all the way from start to end. Okay! So ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ is about a Patel family of which Ram Kapoor is the head. Every thing is hunky dory in the Patel family until he meets and falls in love with a Bollywood Diva that’s me. And then everything goes topsy turvy in the Patel family’s life and of course the Bollywood Divas life too.

Your opinion about Devang Dholakia as a director?

Oh my God what do I say about Devang? While working with him during ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ I found Devang to be the sweetest & the coolest director on the sets. He would give his directorial instructions to us and then also accept our impromptu suggestions, thereby also giving us a complete leeway to tackle the role the way we perceive but not away from the way he has conceived it.

Ram Kapoor is known as the biggest prankster on & off the sets. How could you cope up with him during the making of ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’?

First of all I was too shocked when I was told that Ram Kapoor would be my co-star. Frankly speaking my 1st reaction was how will this oddest pairing of Ram Kapoor – Sunny Leone work? But then I thought that if such oddest pairing works in Hollywood then why not in Bollywood?

But Ram Kapoor…….?

Oh yes! I am coming to that. I was a bit apphrensive about working with Ram Kapoor in the beginning. But once I started interacting with him on the sets of ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ I found him to be a very lovable & a very frank & honest person. But of course I was very scared of his innocent physicality touch on & off the sets, so I was very protective about myself whenever he was around on & off the sets too. But by and by I realized that it was just in his nature to behave with everyone alike.

So what’s next after ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’?

A Lots. The fIlms to be released after ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ are ‘Balvinder Singh Pass Ho Gaya’, ‘Mastizaade’, ‘Tina & Lolo’, ‘One Night Stand’ and many more International, Boilywood & Regional films  This is just the beginnin   which has no end to it.

Now that your better half Daniel Webber has also stepped into the Bollywoodian limelight, do you guide him or offer your precious tips in histrionics per se?

Yes I did attend the launch function of his debut film ‘Dangerous Husn’ after which he got busy with his workshops for ‘Dangerous Husn’, But of course whenever we both are free and before going to bed I give Hindi coaching to Daniel. Which I have myself picked up and perfected it in the long run.

One last question. You have a very controversial past, which is like a blemish, and its reputation you have rarely clarified. Would you like to offer any clarification of your own free will?

To be very frank & honest my emphatic answer is no with a capital “N”. The only thing I would say in this regard is that there is no point in raking up my past. I was what I was and I am what I am “Now”. And why bother about my future, when I am myself not bothered about it. Period!!!!!

Atif Aslam Gets A Special Visa Clearance

Atif Aslam, of late, was the only Pakistani artiste to get a special visa clearance for peace anthem. While other Pakistani artistes find it extremely difficult to get a visa clearance into India, Atif Aslam who has been recording most, if not all of his Bollywood numbers from outside India, flew in specially for a motivational youth number that the singer sang & danced to with Tiger Shroff. Apparently, special permission was requested for the singer to be physically present for the video in Mumbai. Choreographer Ahmed Khan who has shot the video says it was essential to get Atif over. The whole video for a song called “Aa Raha Hoon Main” was planned with Tiger & Atif. It’s a motivational song for students and was shot on a real educational campus, Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods. The idea is to show students that learning & education need not be bookish & boring. Ahmed admits Atif’s presence in Mumbai was not easy. “We had to make a special request. But we’re glad that Atif could make it.”

Richa Chadda’s film ‘Masaan’ goes to Cannes. She is happy about the fact that many of her ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’ team members will be accompanying her during the fest. While Anurag Kashyap, director of GOW is a producer of ‘Masaan’, the director of the film Neeraj Ghaywan and her co-star Vicky Kaushal were assistant directors for the previous film.

Movie Review: 'Gabbar is Back' is a sheer exercise in boredom

May 4, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Gabbar-is-Back

Banner: Bhansali Productions
Produced: Sanjay Leela Bhansali & Shabina Khan
Director: Krish
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Shruti Haasan, Suman Talwar, Jaideep Ahlawat, Sunil Grover, Ishita Vyas, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Chitrangda Singh & Ravi kapoor
Music: Chirantan Bhatt, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Manj Musik & Sandeep Chowta

Débutante director Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi aka Krish in his debut directorial offering ‘Gabbar Is Back’ has tackled the currently ongoing trend of corruption. But trying to make even the character naming comparison with the cult classic of the year 1975’s ‘Sholay’ was his biggest folly. In any case the film has nothing to do neither with the film ‘Sholay’ nor with its varied famous characters including Gabbar. And by the way the film ‘Gabbar Is Back’ is a remake of director Krish’s own Telugu film ‘Ramanna’.

The carelessly and boredom oriented scenario kickstarts with a very righteous man, Professor Aditya (Akshay Kumar) and his tryst with corruption. He is on a mission to infuse a sense of purpose & hope amongst his students in ‘National College’, the place where he teaches the 5 elements of survival, in both, theory as well as practicals. Besides being a professor, he is also a vigilante who functions under the name of ‘Gabbar’. He and his team inject fear amidst the corrupt officers. The main mission of his team is to eliminate the corrupt individuals, from all the spheres of life, but, in a systematic manner. When he’s not bashing up the bad guys, Prof. Aditya also finds time to go on coffee dates with Devaki (Shruti Haasan). There is also a back story of Aditya that finds him romancing his wife (Kareena Kapoor – Khan) and how tragedy strikes him, courtesy industrialist Digvijay Patil (Suman Talwar). While the laidback police officials are unable to nab Gabbar, it takes an enterprising ‘English speaking’ constable Sadhu (Sunil Grover) to get the vital clues & leads about the whereabouts of Gabbar and his team. The only problem with Sadhu is that, because he is a ‘driver’, none of his superiors take him seriously and always belittle him. Amidst all this, when the police & the government land up in a very tight spot because of their inability to nab Gabbar, they hire a razor-sharp topcop, who vows to nab Gabbar at any cost. And when he sees Sadhu’s clues of nabbing Gabbar, he immediately offers him all the support that he needs.

Director Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi aka Krish has done a complete hotch potch in ‘Gabbar Is Back’. Though his  intention of tackling corruption was noble. But he lacks finnesse in his directorial skills. It comes out as a loud and over the top exercise in sheer boredom.

Performance wise Akshay Kumar as usual tops the list. He carries the film on his sole shoulder but still…….something is amiss. But of course his switch from comic & action to meaningful roles is praise worthy. Shruti Haasan is the latest glam doll of Bollywood minus any histrionics capabilities. For a change the comic actor Sunil Grover of ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’ is a scene stealer as a cop. Suman Talwar fails to impress as a villain. While the rest of the characters like Jaideep Ahlawat, Ishita Vyas, Chitrangda Singh & Ravi kapoor are so so. And of course Kareena Kapoor Khan in a cameo as Akshay Kumar’s wife leaves a lasting impression.

Tail Piece: ‘Gabbar Is Back’ is a strictly avoidable fare.

Anupama Chopra's book The Front Row: Conversations on Cinema launched

April 30, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

the__front_row_-_conversations_on_cinema

Anupama Chopra happens to be a journo turned author. And now she has come up with her latest book named “The Front Row: Conversations on Cinema by Anupama Chopra”. It was released recently by none other than the Queen herself, Kangana Ranaut at Taj Lands End on one pleasant evening over a cool session of wine & vodka.

Incidentally speaking the book “The Front Row: Conversations on Cinema” is a collection of Anupama Chopras’ televised interviews with both Bollywood & Hollywood personalities. These include Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut , Priyanka Chopra as well as a host of international celebrities that include Jackie Chan, Will Smith, Martin Scorsese & Johnny Depp to name just a few.

These conversations give an insight into the creative process of actors, directors & producers who have made some of the most memorable movies in recent times. The interviews were conducted from 2012 – 2014, the years the show ‘The Front Row’ aired on Star World.

Recalling the experience of creating the show, Anupama Chopra averred, “The sound stage, now studio number 6, at Mumbai’s Mehboob Studio has a storied past. The studio itself was founded in 1954. For 2 years, this space was also my professional home. ‘The Front Row’ set, a medley of black, blue and white shimmering mirrors, stood here from April 2012 to 2014. Every week, we shot reviews, interviews & panel discussions. The hours were long but the set was intimate. I remember one December evening when we shot 2 conversations in a row, first an actor’s panel with Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, Deepika Padukone & Ranveer Singh followed immediately with a promotional interview for ‘Dhoom 3’ with Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan & Uday Chopra. The first panel ran late, Aamir arrived early. At one point, there was a star jam on stage 6. That apart we shot an interview with Yo Yo Honey Singh at midnight because that’s when he comes alive. One of the many cats at Mehboob Studio traipsed on the set during a shoot with the ‘Barfi’ cast, Ranbir Kapoor continued unfazed. My moment of bliss came when one of my favourite directors Ang Lee came on set for an interview on ‘Life of Pi’, I felt that the space had been blessed. Each interview felt new. Each day was fun.”

On the same occasion Kangana Ranaut averred, “Interviews are a part of my job, but they aren’t all the same. There are the really crappy ones that test your patience. Those are not real interviews. Sometimes, they ask you to do funny things like sing a song or twirl. You’re treated like a ‘madari ka bandar’, and it’s embarrassing. Then there are genuine interviews, like the ones on ‘The Front Row’. I often joke that my interview in ‘The Front Row’ was the biggest hit I ever had. It was a real interview. We talked about things that matter.”

As a parting shot a brief intro of Anupama Chopra would not be out of place here. Anupama Chopra is basically a film critic, television anchor & author. She is also the director of the Mumbai Film Festival. She has been writing about Bollywood since the year 1993. She is founder & editor of the Film Companion channel on YouTube . Film Companion offers a curated look at cinema, Bollywood, Hollywood and beyond. Anupama has also worked extensively with Star World, Star Plus & NDTV 24/7. Her work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Hindustan Times, The Los Angeles Times & VOGUE (India). In 2001, Anupama won the National Award for Best Book on Cinema for “Sholay: The Making Of A Classic”.

Movie Review: 'Ishq Ke Parindey' is a very interesting, entertaining & musical social movie

April 27, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Ishq Ke Parindey

Banner: Shyam Motion Pictures
Presenter: Pawan Goyal
Director: Shakir Khan
Cast: Rishi Verma, Priyanka Mehta, Manjul Aazad, Yasir Iftikhar Khan, Monisha Rai, Pran Dawas & Abhishek
Music: Vijay Vermaa, Rashid Khan & Sajjad Ali

Débutante director Shakir Khan in his debut directorial offering ‘Ishq Ke Parindey’ has refreshed the musical era of earlier musical Muslim social movies like ‘Palki’, ‘Mere Mehboob’, ‘Mehboob Ki Mehendi’ et al. If only Shakir miyan had resisted the temptation of setting ‘Ishq Ke Parindey’ amidst the backdrop of “Gang Wars”.

Right at the outset ‘Ishq Ke Paridey’ starts conveying a loud & clear message that love surpasses all barriers & borders. In fact ‘Ishq Ke Parindey’ portrays Indo – Pak conflict against the backdrop of a powerful love story. The film strongly sends out the message of peace for the constantly warring neighbouring countries namely India & Pakistan. There are still a lot of things that bind India & Pakistan together and their tragic history is definitely one of them. A history which changed the lives of millions, a history which re – wrote the destinies of millions. So ‘Ishq Ke Parindey’ is a love story of Indo – Pak love birds, Sheen, a Muslim girl from Pakistan, and Faiz, a Muslim boy from Lucknow, India, both of whom protect the flame of their sacred love from hatred & violence. The scenario kickstarts when an innocent & beautiful Pakistani girl, Sheen arrives in Lucknow along with her family. It is in the royal city of Nawabs that she meets her soul mate, Faiz. Love blossoms for both of them and what follows is a deadly fight amongst their families. In the end ‘Ishq Ke Parindey’ comes accross as a soulful & lovable journey of Sheen & Faiz’s love story.

Débutante director Shakir Khan’s ‘Ishq Ke Parindey’ ultimatey comes accross as a very interesting, entertaining & musical Muslim social movie. As a director Shakir Khan is brilliant. His sensitive handling of the love story flourishing amidst cross cultural borders, of course steeped in bloodshed & gory Gang Wars, is laudable. The story & the scripted version with intense dialogues (Shakir Khan, Rituraj Tripathi, Dr. Abhishek Dwivedi & Rajeev Arora) & the music (Vijay Vermaa, Rashid Khan & Sajjad Ali) are the biggest and the well deserved highlights of ‘Ishq Ke Paridey). Some of the chartbursting memorable & extremely hummable numbers are “Maula Maula Karam”, “Rab Se Maangi”, “Ek Hatheli”, “Dil Tod Ke” & “Ishq Ke Parindey” (Title number). That apart cinematographer Najeeb Khan has mesmerizingly & beatifully captured Lucknow, the City of Nawab like never before. No doubt added & abetted by the razor sharp scissors of editor Tapos Ghosh.

Performance wise Rishi Verma as Faiz is a surprise discovery. He has essayed his character with natural gracefulness. He has delivered a very effortless & restrained performance. Priyanka Mehta as Sheen wins the hearts of the cinegoers right from the 1st frame. In short she is brilliant without an iota of doubt but of course minus her bluishly tinted contact lenses. Both Rishi Verma & Priyanka Mehta have an extremely bright future. They are adequately supported by Monisha Rai as Ghazala, Pran Dawas as Chhoroo & Abhishek as Vishal. Then of course to take care of the hamming department there is Manjul Aazad as Bhaijaan & Yasir Iftikhar Khan as Shadab.

Tail Piece: ‘Ishq Ke Parindey’ is a good viewing both for the over the hills moviegoers as well as the Gen X. Time to go and bask in Glory of Romance before it is too late.

Movie Review: 'Kaagaz Ke Fools' lovingly depicts a middle class Punjabi family life in all its glory

April 27, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Kaagaz Ke Fools

Banner: Globe Filmy Entertainment
Producer: Faisal Kapadia & Arun Bhairav
Director: Anil Kumar Chaudhary
Cast: Vinay Pathak, Mugdha Godse, Raima Sen, Saurabh Shukla, Rajendra Sethi & Amit Behl
Music: Sangeeta Pant & Surendra Sodi
Media Promotion: Dwapar Promoters (Himanshu Jhunjhunwala)

Writer – Producer Faisal Kapadia indeed deserves a pat on his back for weaving an interesting & colorful albeit a relealistic story based on a middle class Punjabi family in all its glory. If only he had handed the directorial reigns to a more skillful director rather than an amateurish actor turned amateurish director like Anil Kumar Chaudhary, whose earlier credits include films like ‘Ye Mothers’ & ‘No Rules For Fools’ and now ‘Kaagaz Ke Fools’. How Symbolic!!!

The plotted scenario of the film starts off with a search operation by Dev (Saurabh Shukla) & Nikki (Mugdha Godse). This brother – sister duo are in search of Nikki’s ‘non – ambitious but honest’ husband Purushottam Tripathi (Vinay Pathak), who leaves the house after a tiff with his nagging (but loveable) wife Nikki. While on one hand, Nikki’s relatives help to reconcile her relationship with Purushottam, on the other hand, the couple’s common friend lays his bets on them getting divorced. Caught in a whirlpool of relatives, friends & emotional turmoil, Purushottam lands up in a gambling den, where he drinks heavily and wins not just the money but also the company of a ‘working woman’ prostitute Rubina (Raima Sen). Despite all her attempts to seduce him, the ‘patni – vratha’ Purushottam refuses to give in to her advances. Seeing a ‘truthful human’ in her, he starts staying with her, but without any intimacy between them. On a professional front too, his life is in turmoil as his book ‘Ek Thehri Si Zindagi’ fails to find any publisher, which further adds to his frustration. One day, when Purushottam is totally out of control emotionally, he again lands up at the same gambling den. Lady Luck favors him to the core and he makes a killing, so much so that he even defeats the owner of the gambling den ‘in his own game’. He, then, hands over all the winnings to Rubina asking her to fund her brother’s education. The next day, a series of incidents happen in quick succession that puts everyone including Purushottam in a tizzy. While on one hand, Purushottam gets kidnapped in broad daylight, on the other hand, someone renames his book from ‘Ek Thehri Si Zindagi’ to ‘Ek Tharki Si Zindagi’, which lands up being a Bestseller’ in no time of its publishing.

Not only director Anil Kumar Chaudhary but most of his technical crew seems incompetent like cinematographer Aniket Khandagale, music composer Sangeeta Pant (but of course Surendra Sodhi’s background score deserves a special mention), editor Kshitija Khandagale, sound designer Suresh Sharma et al. Need anything more be said.

Performance wise It is Vinay Pathak’s film all the way as his act as a simpleton wins the heart of the viewers as he always finds himself not only in the wrong place but at the wrong time too. In short he is ‘Brillanto’. While the rest of the cast like Mugadha Godse, Raima Sen, Saurabh Shukla, Rajendra Sethi & Amit Behl are all victims of serious miscasting and hence fail to impress and deliver the goods.

Tail Piece: Inspite of all its foibles and follies ‘Kaagaz Ke Fools’ is worth giving a try at least once without ending up being regretful.

'Kal Ho Naa Ho' remake featuring Salman Khurshid, courtesy German Embassy

Kal Ho Naa Ho Salman Khurshid

New Delhi: German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner paid tribute to the soft power of Bollywood by making his acting debut in a video on Shah Rukh Khan-Saif Ali Khan-starrer 2003 romantic drama ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’.

Steiner loved the title song of the Karan Johar-directed movie. The song, penned by Javed Akhtar and sung by Sonu Nigam, talks about living in now rather than thinking about past or future.

Besides Steiner, the tribute video stars his wife Eliese in the role earlier played by Preity Zinta while former foreign minister of India, Salman Khurshid filled in the role done by Saif Ali Khan.

The premiere of the music – “Lebe Zetzt-Kal Ho Naa Ho” was attended by actress Sharmila Tagore, Saif Ali Khan, Javed Akhtar, Madhu Kishwar and director Sumit Osmand Shaw.

Steiner said working on the three-and-a-half-minute music video was tough and has renewed his respect for actors.

“There were three difficulties, one, the only acting that I did was in my school some 50 years ago, second, I don’t know Hindi so lip-syncing was very hard and third, Germans are not known for their sense of humour,” Steiner said at its launch at his residence in New Delhi today.

Tagore said it was fun to see Steiner doing Shah Rukh Khan’s role and Khurshid playing her actor-son Saif Ali Khan in the video.

“Bollywood has been a wonderful ambassador of Indian culture and Indianness all over the world. Many years ago we were slightly rubbished but everybody knows the potential of Bollywood now. Also, the theme of ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ resonates with the youth,” Ms Tagore said.

Saif Ali Khan hailed the video clip as a “unique diplomatic effort”, adding that he particularly enjoyed watching Steiner.

Khurshid said while it was very tough to imitate Saif’s style in the song, it would be a lot tougher to play him in politics.

Javed Akhtar joked that he always believed that politicians and diplomats were good actors and now he had a video proof of that.

Steiner said it was a lot of hard work for him as he does not know Hindi.

“It was a challenge. These actors are masters and I had to imitate them. I realised that you cannot imitate Shah Rukh Khan. He is such a perfect actor. We wanted to show our respect to Bollywood and these fantastic actors. They are very popular in Germany.

“Bollywood is a cultural institution. This is the one instrument to connect to the world and it is a very good instrument. Me and my wife are Bollywood addicts. She has seen more than 150 Bollywood films… we have seen them together,” the ambassador said.
