Chennai residents suffer drinking water shortage

December 5, 2015 by Nasheman

Chennai-water

Chennai: An intermittent light drizzle since the morning on Saturday has added to the worries of Chennai residents who are battling the worst floods in a century amid shortage of drinking water and power cuts.

Chennai and its suburbs were battered by record rains for the past one month, leaving at least 325 people dead.

Unlike some areas such as Mylapore, Adyar and Annasalai where the water level has receded and electricity supply has been partially restored, people in many pockets in north Chennai continued to remain cut-off.

“Rumours of surplus water being released are also a cause of serious worry,” Revathi Vasan, a resident of West Mambalam, told IANS.

She said power supply has not been restored in her locality while their is water- logging around her apartment complex and on the roads.

Lakshman, a resident of Adyar, told IANS: “Milk was available at the shop near our apartment. It was sold at the normal price. But water cans have become very costly.”

In several localities, apartment owners pumped out stagnant water through hired pumps.

Southern Railway on Saturday announced operation of a special train from Chennai Beach Station to Bengaluru. The train will leave Chennai Beach at 4.30 p.m on Saturday.

A special train will be operated from Bengaluru to Chennai Beach Station on December 6.

Suburban train services between Chennai Egmore – Tambaram have commenced.

Fish carts and two wheelers were the mode of transport for patients to reach hospitals during the past three days, said an official.

N. Sathyabhama, director of medical services and quality-southern region at Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd., said the hospital also received patients from several other hospitals affected by floods and power cuts.

“Some patients came by fish cart. One was brought by her brother on the bike as that was the only means of navigation through the heavily flooded Greams Lane (where the hospital is located),” Sathyabhama told IANS.

She said there was no power supply for 57 hours in one block and 69 hours in another and the situation was managed with generators.

As a safety measure the electricity power was cut for a couple of days in Chennai and its suburbs.

Many household items such as plastic chairs and tables, beds and TVs have been washed out to the shore of the Adyar river and are being collected by rag-pickers.

The government Royapettah Hospital and Sri Ramachandra Hospitals also got patients from the hospitals affected by flood and power cut.

Royapettah Hospital got 23 patients from other hospitals in flood affected areas, a senior official at the hospital told IANS.

After social media bashing PIB regrets for fake pic of Modi in flood hit area

December 5, 2015 by Nasheman

modi-photo-pib

New Delhi: Facing flak for posting a doctored photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi surveying Tamil Nadu floods from a helicopter, PIB today expressed regret saying the incident happened due to an “error of judgment”.

In the picture posted by Press Information Bureau (PIB) on its website and Twitter, houses and water were reportedly seen clearly through the chopper’s window which the critics pointed out could not be possible during an aerial survey.

The photo was soon removed after questions were raised in social media about its authenticity.

In a clarification issued here, the PIB said, “Out of the seven pictures released, one picture used the technique of merging two pictures. This is being referred to as ‘photoshopping’ in sections of media.

“This happened due to an error of judgment and the picture was subsequently deleted. PIB regrets the release of the above-mentioned picture and inconvenience caused is regretted,” it said in the statement.

The Prime Minister had made an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of Chennai, its suburbs and Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts yesterday.

18 die in Chennai hospital ICU due to power failure

December 4, 2015 by Nasheman

18 ICU patients die

Chennai: Eighteen patients died in a private hospital here allegedly due to flooding of generator room and resultant snap of oxygen supply even as the Tamil Nadu government today indicated that it would probe the matter.

The medical institution has declined to comment. Over the past several days when rains ravaged the city, a well known private hospital on the banks of the Adyar river in Manapakkanam here witnessed flooding in parts of its premises.

As there was no electricity, the hospital was run on generator. Speaking to reporters, some relatives of those dead alleged that those on life support like ventilator and oxygen could not be continuously given such backup as the generator room was flooded.

The private health authorities remained inaccessible.

“Out of 75 ICU patients in that hospital, 57 ventilator patients were moved out. The remaining patients died over the past two three days. Let us not jump the gun to say that the patients died due to power failure,” Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan told reporters.

He said, however, the government was probing the issue.

To another question, he said, “If it was so all the ICU patients would have died. 575 patients have been moved out of that hospital,” he said acknowledging that there was flooding and power cut in that particular hospital.

“All government hospitals were up and running. We are taking patients from all hospitals on need basis,” he said.

Patients needing support are being shifted to large state-run hospitals with facilities, he said.
“92 additional mobile medical teams have been dispatched across the city for such purposes,” he said.

The Health Secretary said that he along with the Health Minister visited another private hospital, which is also flooded, and shifted babies on a ventilator to a government facility.

“Let us not unnecessarily create panic. But we will also go through records,” he said.

Modi announces relief of Rs 1000 crore for rain-hit Tamil Nadu

December 3, 2015 by Nasheman

People of India stay with people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of need, says the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducting an aerial survey of rain hit areas of Chennai on Thursday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducting an aerial survey of rain hit areas of Chennai on Thursday.

Chennai: After an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced an immediate release of Rs.1,000 crore for relief and rehabilitation works in Tamil Nadu.

“A sum of Rs. 1,000 crore will be released immediately by the Government of India to carry out relief works. This will be in addition to Rs.940 crore which was released earlier (by the Centre),” he said in a brief statement at the naval base “INS Adyar” here.

Flanked by Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Mr. Modi began his brief statement with a sentence in Tamil saying telling people of Tamil Nadu, “I will be in support of you”.

Switching to English, Mr. Modi said he has seen the damage and misery caused by the monsoon fury.

“People of India stay with people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of need,” he said after the survey in which he was accompanied by Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, who hails from Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Modi also tweeted later, “The Government of India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of need.”

“I have directed that Rs. 1000 crore be released immediately by the Govt of India to Tamil Nadu for immediate relief,” he said in another tweet.

“I have seen the damage and misery caused by the extremely heavy rainfall,” said another of his tweet.

The Prime Minister made the announcement after holding consultations with the Chief Minister at the naval base here.

Earlier, Mr. Modi arrived from Delhi at the naval working station ‘INS Rajali’ in Arakkonam, about 60 km from here, and made an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of Chennai, its suburbs and Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts.

After an earlier spell of heavy rains and damage in November, the Prime Minister had announced release of Rs.940 crore to Tamil Nadu.

Siddaramaiah announces Rs. 5-crore aid to flood-hit Tamil Nadu

December 3, 2015 by Nasheman

siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Karnataka on Wednesday announced Rs.5 crore for relief and rescue operations in flood-hit Chennai.

“As a humanitarian gesture, we are also rushing relief materials to Chennai for the people affected by flood waters,” an official told sources after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced in New Delhi the Rs.5-crore aid to Tamil Nadu.

With air, rail and road connectivity to Chennai disrupted, flights, trains and bus services from Bengaluru were cancelled for the next two days.

Though Chennai is about 350 km away to the southeast of Bengaluru, there is heavy movement of people and goods between the two state capitals, with a dozen flights and trains and about 100 buses operating daily.

As the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal continued to batter Chennai, dark clouds and chilly winds gripped Bengaluru since Monday, with forecast of rains and thundershowers this week.

In a related development, prayers and rituals were performed in temples in the city to appease rain gods for sparing Chennai from further rains, as thousands of people, especially the Tamil-speaking community, with relatives reside in both cities.

Chennai rain fury: Airport shut, Army assisting in rescue operations

December 2, 2015 by Nasheman

Heavy rain Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Rain-ravaged Chennai was today crawling with air and road traffic severely hit as Army, Navy and NDRF teams stepped up rescue operations in worst-hit localities of the city that is also witnessing power outages.

The non-stop torrential rains pounding the city since last night showed some let up in the morning but the inundated streets left commuters stranded.

In view of the water logging, Chennai Airport authorities have shut operations till 6 AM tomorrow. All airlines, including Air India, have cancelled their operations from Chennai airport.

The Airports Authority of India has issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) to all air operators in this regard, an AAI spokesperson said in New Delhi.

The spokesperson said Chennai airport authorities had initially shut operations till this morning but due to incessant rains it has now decided to extend it till 6 AM tomorrow.

Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is a notice containing information concerning the establishment, condition, or change in any facility, service or procedure, among others, in airspace management.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said in view of the situation, the Centre has deployed Army, Navy and NDRF teams in sufficient numbers.

“The Prime Minister has issued a memorandum and we have deployed our Central team there to assess the situation and make a report so that every possible help can also reach there,” Singh said.

Two columns of army’s Garrison Infantry Battalion have been pressed into service in Tambaram and Oorapakkam after the Tamil Nadu government sought military assistance.

The Navy has also been deployed to assist in the operations.

“More army personnel are coming to Chennai from Bengaluru,” a Defence Public Relations official said.

Navy personnel have been deployed in Sadiapet area of Chennai to rescue people marooned in low-lying areas.

The NDRF is airlifting another 15 teams to the rain-battered state. While 10 teams are being airlifted from Bhubaneshwar to Tirupati, another five teams are being lifted from Delhi, NDRF DG O P Singh said.

Each team comprises 40 personnel.

The teams are also carrying 20 inflatable boats along with them for the rescue operations.

NDRF DIG and commanding officer have been stationed in Chennai to take stock of the operations, he said.

Singh said that he is also in constant touch with the Relief Commissioner of Tamil Nadu.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said more forces will be deployed to tackle the situation.

However, “we are facing difficulty in bringing them (forces) there as the airport is also not operating,” he said.

The rains that have virtually broken a 100-year-old record with one day’s rainfall covering a month’s average have flooded areas in Vadapalani, Valasaravakkam and Nandamvakkam as nearby lakes overflowed into the city.

The situation has worsened in suburban areas of Tambaram and Mudichur after the Chembarakam lake overflowed and an unprecedented 26,000 cusecs of water was released flooding the downstream areas. These areas had already suffered heavily during the earlier spells of rains.

A large part of the road near Madhya Kailash temple in the heart of the city in an area that connects the IT corridor has caved in resulting in a huge crater and disrupting traffic.

Even in hitherto unaffected areas, people have complained that water entered their homes and roads flooded with surging waters. Several areas in the city went without power as supply was cut as a safety precaution.

DG MeT Department Laxman Singh Rathore said, “Extremely heavy rainfall has been occurring for sometime and today Tamil Nadu has witnessed 35 cm of rainfall that has created havoc.

“Its intensity, however, will decrease in the next 48 hours and further by 72 hours but it is likely to continue for five-seven days,” he said.

DMK MP Kanimozhi demanded that the Centre should declare it as a national disaster as it is not only Chennai that is affected but also coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.

“The rain is unrelenting and more rains have been predicted in another few more days. I really don’t understand how state government can handle the situation. We need more resources, more help and everything has to be rushed quickly. We need whatever support Centre can give to the state government,” she said.

Meanwhile, Spicejet has cancelled all its flights till tomorrow, while Jet Airways has cancelled all its flights to and from Chennai for today.

Budget carrier IndiGo has announced cancellation of all flights from Chennai.

“Due to heavy rains causing water logging on the Chennai runway all the inbound and outbound flights to and fro Chennai have been cancelled,” Indigo tweeted.

Chennai: Lawyers hold 'beef eating' protest

March 7, 2015 by Nasheman

beef-protest-lawyers

Chennai: A group of lawyers staged a ‘beef eating’ protest in the Madras High Court campus here, dubbing it as a ‘pre-emptive’ measure in the wake of ban on cow slaughter by Maharashtra Government.

Though there was no law in force banning cow slaughter in Tamil Nadu, the protesting lawyers said they were condemning the Maharashtra law banning cow slaughter, transportation and even possession of beef.

Hindu Munnani leader Ramagopalan had demanded that Tamil Nadu should follow Maharashtra and enact a similar law.

Lawyers said they apprehended that the state government might listen to the Hindu Munnani leader. Hence they held the protest as a preemptive measure.
