Prof. K S Bhagwan receives anonymous threat letter

September 10, 2015 by Nasheman

K S Bhagwan

Mysuru: Rationalist Prof K S Bhagwan received an anonymous letter in English reportedly warning to kill him at his house on Wednesday. His wife said that the letter was delivered by the postman around 12.45 pm at Bhagwan’s house on Udayaravi road, Kuvempunagar. The letter was duly handed over to Kuvempunagar police station. The Police are reported to have been guarding the house round-the-clock.

The letter typed using a typewriter, addressed Bhagwan derogatorily and read as follows: “Don’t relax thinking you are safe. Haavina dvesha 12 years. 3 successful. Next you. Will never miss the target. No police security will save you when we come. We know how to do. Count your days”. (sic)

Sources said that the letter may have originated from Bengaluru, as per the seal on the order according to the report of investigators.

Earlier, soon after the Kannada scholar was shot dead by two unidentified men, a Bajrang Dal co-convener Bhuvith Shetty had posted a controversial tweet at 10:41 am on August 30 that said, “Then it was U R Anantamoorty and now it is M M Kalburgi. Mock Hinduism and die a dog’s death. And dear K. S Bhagwan you are next”, which had gone viral.

Soon after Bantwal police were informed about the controversial tweet, they registered a suo moto case at Bantwal police station.

Mysuru Police immediately provided Bhagwan with a personal security guard. Prof K S Bhagawan had reportedly received threats after his controversial speech on Bhagavad Gita at a recent event.

K S Bhagwan

Mysuru: Prof K S Bhagawan has been provided with a personal security guard by the Mysuru police, after a Bajrang Dal activist threatened him on Twitter that he would be the next target after Dr M M Kalburgi, sources said. Prof K S Bhagawan had reportedly received threats after his controversial speech on Bhagavad Gita at a recent event.

Karnataka government orders CID probe into M M Kalburgi’s assassination

August 31, 2015 by Nasheman

M M Kalburgi

Bengaluru: A CID probe was today announced by the Karnataka Chief Minister into the murder of progressive Kannada thinker and scholar M M Kalburgi at his residence at Dharwad in north Karnataka.

“We have decided to hand over the case to CID…. This incident should not have happened. It is highly condemnable,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters here, a day after Kalaburgi was shot dead at point-blank range by two unidentified men.

77-year-old Kalburgi was an associate of rationalist Govind Pansare of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, who also fell victim in similar circumstances in February, and had drawn the ire of some right-wing Hindu outfits like VHP and Bajrang Dal with his remarks about idol worship by Hindus.

He had often spoken against superstitions and courted controversies with his outspoken stand.

At Dharwad this morning, hundreds of admirers of Kalburgi paid last respects to him. The funeral will take place later in the day today.

Yesterday, the attackers had knocked at the door of Kalburgi’s house claiming to be his students and as it was opened, they pumped bullets into his forehead and chest and fled. He died in a hospital.

“Whoever is behind this, we will catch them and punish according to law,” said the Chief Minister, who visited Dharwad to pay last respects to Kalburgi yesterday.

Asked if the sleuths have got any clues, Home Minister K J George said the probe was being started. “It will be investigated from all angles.”

The Hubli-Dharwad police had announced a special team to probe the murder that has shaken the Kannada literary world.

Kalburgi had raised the hackles of right-wing outfits when he made certain remarks about idol worship by Hindus that were considered “derogatory” and “blasphemous” and also led to protests by them.

A winner of central and state “Sahitya Akademi” awards, he had also suggested the need for a better state anthem.

Part of his works on “Vachana”(verses)” literature had also come under criticism of the state’s majority “veerashaiva” (Lingayat) community, a liberal Shaivism founded by 12th century philosopher, poet and social reformer Basaveshwara.

Lottery scam: Pari Rajan printed tickets in Kerala, was connected to film industry

May 28, 2015 by Nasheman

Pari Rajan

Bengaluru: Reportedly, Pari Rajan, the kingpin of the Single Digit Lottery scam, who was arrested on April 30th in a raid on his house in BEML Layout, KGF, by the lottery and excise enforcement department, has told the CID that the tickets were printed in Kerala, and that the network is spread across three states  He has named his associates as Jithu alias Ranjith, Erode Ranjan, KVK Ganesh and Anand, who are at large. Rajan has been booked for criminal conspiracy, cheating and disobeying the order of a public servant.

Sources indicate that Paari has told the police that Jithu was a courier to the printer and collected the tickets. Tickets of 24 different lotteries from several states, including Assam, Tamil Nadu and surprisingly Bodoland were found at his residence. Apart from this Police  recovered more than Rs 39,000 in cash.  The Phones were missing though. He had handed the phones and SIM cards to his friend Murugan, who lives in RT Nagar, Bengaluru. Police later managed to seize the mobiles and cards.

Before the state decided to transfer the case to the CBI, no officer other than Alok Kumar, additional commissioner (west), was questioned. Alok Kumar is now under suspension. Rajan had links with film world, says CID

Information emanating from various sources indicate that Rajan Nataraj aka Pari Rajan,is also closely connected with the film industry in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. This became evident from his his phone call records.

“We are not sure if those from the film industry are involved in the scam. But Rajan claimed he helped producers get finance for films and facilitated budding actors by getting them small roles. He also took commission from them. We’d already seized over 12 SIM cards from him. Now, it looks like he has more SIM cards. Since the case is being transferred to CBI, we will bring the matter to their notice,” sources said.

Lottery scam: Karnataka government ready for CBI probe "whenever necessary': K J George

May 26, 2015 by Nasheman

K J George

Bengaluru: Karnataka government is ready to hand over to CBI, “whenever necessary,” probe into alleged illegal lottery busines in the state, as a fall out of which a senior IPS officer has been suspended, Home Minister KJ George said on Monday.

“We are ready. Whenever necessary we will give it to CBI (for conducting an enquiry into the single digit illegal lottery scam),” Home Minister KJ George told reporters here.

Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (West Bengaluru), was suspended on May 23 for his alleged illegal contact with Pari Rajan, said to be the kingpin in the scam, and for intefering in the investigation process. Rajan is already in police custody.

George said the government was also ready for the Enforcement Directorate probe if the central agency felt there was something fishy about the money trail, George said.

“As far as Enforcement Directorate probe is concerned, there is no need for the government to seek permission or make any recommendation. If they feel there is money trail is there, they can take over the case without our permission.”

Flaying the Opposition’s demand for CBI inquiry, he said while this government was ready for the probe, the opposition parties during their rule did not hand over a single case to the central investigation agency.

“Why this love for CBI now? Don’t they have any faith in our investigation agencies? This is very unfair,” he said.

Asked whether Governor, Vajubhai Vala had sought a report on the scam, George said, “If the Governor asks for it we will send it. We have nothing to hide. Everything is an open book.”

On how many more police officers’ names had been included in the CID report, George said, “As far as numbers are concerned, I have no idea about it.”

George said the report has recommended action against only one IPS officer Alok Kumar.

“The report had recommended action against one IPS officer, and we have suspended him. He is the second officer though. Earlier based on an IG report we had suspended one Dharnesh, a police official,” he said.

BJP asks Siddaramaiah government to hand over Lottery Scam Case to CBI

May 25, 2015 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: A day after a senior IPS officer was suspended in connection with an alleged lottery scam, senior BJP leader and Union Minister DV Sadananda Gowda said the probe should be handed over to CBI as “top officials and some ministers are involved in it”.

“…just because top officials and some of the senior leaders-ministers of the present government are involved in this (single-digit lottery scam) – I think this cannot be investigated by the police of Karnataka. If they are fair enough, they should refer the matter to the CBI so that there could be clean and neat investigation and truth comes out,” he told reporters in Bengaluru.

Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (West Bengaluru), was yesterday suspended for his alleged involvement in lottery scam.

A government order said yesterday, Mr Kumar had illegal contact with Pari Rajan, said to be the kingpin in the scam, and not only helped him but also interfered in the investigation process. Mr Rajan is already in police custody.

However, Mr Kumar has denied any kind of involvement in the case and demanded a fair investigation.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said the action was taken on the basis of a interim report submitted by the CID. Siddaramaiah who had held a meeting of senior police officials earlier this month, had ordered a CID probe into the alleged scam. He had also said that government would take strict action against those involved in the scam.

Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Suresh Kumar said it was a case of intelligence failure and questioned the intelligence wing for not keeping Siddaramaiah informed for two years.

“How can Home Minister escape from his responsibility? Why did our state intelligence not keep Chief Minister informed for two years? It is a case of intelligence failure, pure and simple. Here is an example of how to weakly handle Home Ministry,” he said.

Government had earlier suspended Dharanesh, Superintendent of Police (Lottery Squad) in connection with the case.
