Teesta Setalvad, CPM MPs denied entry into Hyderabad varsity

March 31, 2016 by Nasheman

Teesta Setalvad

Hyderabad: Civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad and two Communist Party of India-Marxist MPs were Thursday not allowed to enter University of Hyderabad, evoking protest from students.

The university security personnel stopped Teesta and MPs from Kerala, T. Rajesh and P.Sampath, at the main gate.

They were invited by the students’ groups to address a public meeting as part of the ongoing agitation against last week’s police crackdown and the demand to remove P. Appa Rao as vice chancellor.

Teesta and the two Lok Sabha members lodged strong protest over the denial of entry. They condemned the curbs imposed by the university on entry of political leaders, activists and media into the campus.

The students, who were waiting from on the campus, also rushed to the main gate and raised slogans against the university authorities.

Joint Action Committee for Social Justice, an umbrella grouping of various students’ groups, has condemned the university’s action and called it an attempt to stifle the movement for justice to Rohith Vemula, a Dalit research scholar who committed suicide in January.

The unrest on the campus began on January 17 after Rohith, one of the five Dalit students suspended for allegedly attacking a leader of ABVP, committed suicide. This triggered a massive protest by students, who demanded action against vice chancellor and central minister Bandaru Dattaetrya who were named in First Information Report.

Appa Rao, who went on leave on January 24, resumed charge last week, triggering huge protest. The students ransacked the vice chancellor’s lodge on March 22 and in the subsequent police crackdown 25 students and two faculty members were arrested and jailed.

They were all released on bail on March 29.

Hyderabad varsity incidents rock Telangana assembly

March 26, 2016 by Nasheman

University of Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The incidents at Hyderabad Central University and Osmania University rocked the Telangana assembly on Saturday with the opposition stalling the proceedings to demand full-fledged debate.

The house was adjourned thrice since morning as the opposition Congress and the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) insisted on a debate on the police brutalities on students at Hyderabad Central University (HCU).

As soon as the house met for the day, the two parties demanded their adjournment motions on the issue be taken up but Deputy Speaker Padmadevender Reddy rejected this.

Members of Congress and MIM rushed to the well of the house, seeking an immediate debate. They wanted the government to respond to their demands for withdrawal of cases against students.

The Congress party also raised the issue relating to the attack on its legislator Sampath Kumar’s car in Osmania University and demanded action against those involved. The MLA’s vehicle was damaged when he visited OU campus on March 23 when students were staging a protest after recovery of a body of a man from a sump.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government, however, suggested that the debate on the university incidents be taken as part of the demand for grants for home department.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao termed as ‘unfortunate’ the incidents that occurred at the two universities. “The death of a student at HCU is unfortunate,” he said referring to the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula.

He said that the attack on MLA’s car in Osmania University is condemnable. The chief minister, however, wondered as to why the Congress MLA did not lodge a complaint with police.

KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, told the house that the government is ready to discuss all the issues. He took objection to the manner in which the opposition was raising the issue and alleged that they are only interested in taking political mileage.

MIM leader in the house, Akbaruddin Owaisi said the chief minister’s suggestion that the issue be discussed as part of the demand for grants is an insult to Dalits. He condemned the arrests of students on HCU campus and the police atrocities on them.

Owaisi demanded that the house pass a resolution to urge the central government to recall HCU Vice Chancellor P. Appa Rao. He also sought an inquiry into the beating up of students by police and university security.

Police arrested 24 students and two faculty members of HCU on March 22 when they were staging a protest over P. Appa Rao resuming charge as the vice chancellor. The protestors alleged that Appa Rao is responsible for Rohith’s suicide in January.

Student groups alleged that police beat up students after arresting them and also assaulted them in police stations.

Meanwhile, Congress party’s Telangana unit president Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged that police attacked the vehicle of MLA.

He said student and youth leaders of the Congress party were being harassed by police by summoning them to police stations.

March 25, 2016 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Condemning the police crackdown on peacefully protesting students and faculty members of University of Hyderabad (UoH), Amnesty International India has demanded their immediate release.

“Violence against protesting students in a university cannot under any circumstance be justified,” said Aakar Patel, Executive Director at Amnesty International India, in a press release.

“Allegations of sexual violence and threats by the police to women students must be investigated and those suspected of being responsible must be prosecuted,” Aakar said.

“Any protesters who can legitimately be charged for acts of violence or vandalism must be prosecuted and tried in proceedings which meet international fair trial standards,” he said.

Hyderabad: Chaos prevailed at a meeting addressed by JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar here on Thursday as a slogan-shouting youth threw a slipper at him.

The incident occurred at Sundraiah Vignan Kendram, as Kanhiaya Kumar was beginning his address at the seminar on constitutional rights.

The youth sitting among the audience stood up, raised slogans against the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) president and threw a slipper towards him on the dais. It, however, missed the target.

The youth questioned why Kanhaiya Kumar, who he alleged supports terrorists like Afzal Guru, was being allowed to share the stage.

Activists of All India Students Federation (AISF) and others among the audience caught hold of the youth and roughed him even as Kanhaiya Kumar appealed for restraint.

Police intervened to take custody of the youth. Another youngster said to be accompanying him was also arrested. Their identity was not immediately known.

Continuing with his speech, Kanhaiya Kumar said that such incidents do not matter to him. “Do whatever you want to do, I am not the one to get scared. My way is the Gandhian way,” he said.

The student leader wanted to know at whose behest they are resorting to such acts.

Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on charges of sedition last month after anti-national slogans were allegedly raised during a meeting organised in memory of parliament attack convict Guru on JNU campus in New Delhi.

Police did not allow him to enter University of Hyderabad on Wednesday. He wanted to address students and pay tributes to Rohith Vemula, a Dalit research scholar who committed suicide in January.

HCU:Striking non-teaching staff resume duties;campus peaceful

March 24, 2016 by Nasheman

Rohith Vemula

Hyderabad: The non-teaching staff of Hyderabad Central University (HCU), who had gone on a strike protesting vandalisation of VC’s lodge on March 22 allegedly by a group of students, resumed their duties today as the situation on the campus remained peaceful.

Members of HCU Non-Teaching Staff Union had boycotted duties from Tuesday afternoon protesting ransacking of Vice Chancellor Appa Rao Podile’s official residence (VC’s lodge) and after being assaulted allegedly by the group of students opposing Podile resuming his duty.

As part of the strike, cooks had shut down ‘Students’ Mess’, expressing support to the Vice Chancellor (VC) after which students had set up an open kitchen yesterday.

“Messes, which had been shut down due to the strike by non-teaching staff opened today…they (non-teaching staff) have resumed their duties from today in the larger interest of the university,” HCU Registrar M Sudhakar told PTI.

Meanwhile, twenty-five students and two faculty members of HCU, who were arrested yesterday in connection with incidents of vandalism at VC’s lodge and stone pelting on police personnel, were sent to judicial remand last night and are lodged in Cherlapally Central Prison.

“The situation on the campus is peaceful today,” Gachibowli police inspector J Ramesh said.

Mother of deceased Dalit research scholar Rohit Vemula, Radhika, who had staged a sit-in protest along with scores of HCU students in front of the university last night after being denied entry, withdrew her protest at around 11.15 pm, HCU Chief Security Officer T V Rao said.

Radhika and the protesting students, who demanded Podile’s immediate removal from the post and the release of students and faculty members arrested in connection with vandalism of the VC’s lodge and stone-pelting on police, also made a vain bid to “barge” inside the campus but were stopped at the entrance itself, Rao said.

“She wanted to hold a dharna inside the campus, but we prevented her from doing so. She along with around 200 students attempted to go inside the campus, but we stopped them and they finally withdrew their protest at around 11.15 pm,” the security official said.
