SC asks Karnataka to take decision on Bababudangiri Dargah

September 4, 2015 by Nasheman

Bababudangiri

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today asked the Karnataka government to take a decision on issues relating to the communally-sensitive Karnataka shrine, Guru Dattatreya Bababudanswamy Dargah, revered by a section of Muslims and Sangh Parivar.

A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and N V Ramana accepted the submission of the state government that it was a “very sensitive” matter and the cabinet will take a decision by considering the 2010 report of the Commissioner for Religious and Charitable Endowments on Chikmagalur-based Sufi shrine.

“We are of the view that at this stage, the state government be left alone to take a decision. The state government may consider all objections against the report. Thereafter, state government will decide the matter,” it said.

The bench then said it will be open to either parties to seek redressal if they are aggrieved by the decision of the government.

It then disposed of the two civil appeals filed by Syed Gouse Mohiuddin Shah Khadri, the Sajjada Nasheen (hereditary administrator) of the Sufi shrine and the Citizens For Justice and Peace respectively.

The Citizens For Justice and Peace wants to maintain the secular nature of the shrine, while the Sajjada Nasheen is resisting the state’s attempts to take over the management of the Dargah, located in the Chikmagalur district.

The shrine has a long history of litigations as in 1978 the property of Dargah was taken over by the Wakf board. The Sajjada Nasheen challenged the move and got a decree in its favour. Later, the government attempted to take it over.

The apex court, which today ordered authorities to maintain status quo, has now asked the state government to take an informed decision.

In 2008 also, the Supreme Court had ordered status quo at the shrine “in terms of the order of February 25, 1989, passed by the Commissioner for Religious and Charitable Endowments in Karnataka” until final orders. The 1989 order had codified rituals upholding the syncretic practices.

The shrine is said to be named after Sufi saint Baba Budan, also called Guru Dattatreya, who is revered by both the communities.

Drought situation in Karnataka worst in 40 years, says CM

September 2, 2015 by Nasheman

KARNATAKA JOINT SESSION

Bengaluru: Describing the drought situation in the state as the “worst” in 40 years, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has asked officials to take it as a “challenge”.

He has also warned strict action against negligent officials.

Addressing the Conference of Regional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Chief Executive Officers of Zilla Panchayats here, he directed that officials and staff should not be sanctioned long leave, unless it is an emergency.

He has also asked them to stop sending officials and staff on training.

Making it clear that there is no shortage of funds, he directed the officials to take all necessary steps to supply drinking water.

Pointing out that there is drought situation in 135 of 176 taluks, he asked officials to take steps to prevent villagers and farmers from migrating by providing them job opportunities under the Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Scheme.

He also stressed on the importance of setting up fodder banks and cow sheds and directed the Chief Secretary to take action against taluk officials who failed in taking steps.

Siddaramaiah advised officials to take precautionary steps to control spread of epidemics during drought.

Expressing concern over farmer suicide incidents reaching the 400 mark till now this year from 58 in 2013-14 and 48 in 2014-15, he said exorbitant loans and private money lenders are the main reason for this, and asked officials to implement steps taken by the government to prevent such incidents.

September 1, 2015 by Nasheman

K S Bhagwan

Mysuru: Prof K S Bhagawan has been provided with a personal security guard by the Mysuru police, after a Bajrang Dal activist threatened him on Twitter that he would be the next target after Dr M M Kalburgi, sources said. Prof K S Bhagawan had reportedly received threats after his controversial speech on Bhagavad Gita at a recent event.

Police posted guards at the houses of well-known writers Girish Karnad and Chandrashekhar Patil, a day after renowned Kannada scholar MM Kalburgi was shot dead in Dharwad.

On Dr Kalburgi’s murder, Prof. Bhagwan said, “It is an unfortunate and dangerous development. Dr Kalburgi was my very good friend. He liked my writings and encouraged me. He was a great soul and a great scholar and thinker. He worked for the downtrodden.”

Bengaluru Police Commissioner N S Megharikh told sources that the police have also asked citizens to keep an eye out for anyone moving around suspiciously in the vicinity of the houses of writers and artists. Karnataka government orders CID probe into M M Kalburgi’s assassination

August 31, 2015 by Nasheman

M M Kalburgi

Bengaluru: A CID probe was today announced by the Karnataka Chief Minister into the murder of progressive Kannada thinker and scholar M M Kalburgi at his residence at Dharwad in north Karnataka.

“We have decided to hand over the case to CID…. This incident should not have happened. It is highly condemnable,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters here, a day after Kalaburgi was shot dead at point-blank range by two unidentified men.

77-year-old Kalburgi was an associate of rationalist Govind Pansare of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, who also fell victim in similar circumstances in February, and had drawn the ire of some right-wing Hindu outfits like VHP and Bajrang Dal with his remarks about idol worship by Hindus.

He had often spoken against superstitions and courted controversies with his outspoken stand.

At Dharwad this morning, hundreds of admirers of Kalburgi paid last respects to him. The funeral will take place later in the day today.

Yesterday, the attackers had knocked at the door of Kalburgi’s house claiming to be his students and as it was opened, they pumped bullets into his forehead and chest and fled. He died in a hospital.

“Whoever is behind this, we will catch them and punish according to law,” said the Chief Minister, who visited Dharwad to pay last respects to Kalburgi yesterday.

Asked if the sleuths have got any clues, Home Minister K J George said the probe was being started. “It will be investigated from all angles.”

The Hubli-Dharwad police had announced a special team to probe the murder that has shaken the Kannada literary world.

Kalburgi had raised the hackles of right-wing outfits when he made certain remarks about idol worship by Hindus that were considered “derogatory” and “blasphemous” and also led to protests by them.

A winner of central and state “Sahitya Akademi” awards, he had also suggested the need for a better state anthem.

Part of his works on “Vachana”(verses)” literature had also come under criticism of the state’s majority “veerashaiva” (Lingayat) community, a liberal Shaivism founded by 12th century philosopher, poet and social reformer Basaveshwara.

Karnataka MLA among 5 dead in Andhra Pradesh train accident

August 25, 2015 by Nasheman

train

Hyderabad: Five people including a Karnataka legislator were killed early on Monday morning when a granite-laden truck rammed into an express train at a level crossing in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur, the second fatal accident this month involving the railways.

Around 25 people are said to have been injured in the accident, which occurred at around 2.25am at Madakasira, more than 450 km from capital Hyderabad.

Official sources said Karnataka MLA Venkatesh Nayak and the driver of the truck are among the five people killed when four coaches of the Bangalore-Nanded Express derailed under the impact of the collision with the truck.

The driver of the truck, who was allegedly in an inebriated condition, was driving at a very high speed and failed to notice the closed gates at a level crossing.

Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu expressed condolences.

The railway ministry tweeted that the accident was caused due to the negligence of the lorry driver.

— Ministry of Railways (@RailMinIndia) August 24, 2015

Earlier this month, at least 35 people died when two trains derailed within minutes of each other while crossing a small bridge near Harda town in Madhya Pradesh.

India has the world’s fourth largest railway network that ferries more than 23 million passengers every day, but infrastructure is poorly maintained and accidents are common.

In 2012, a government report said almost 15,000 people were killed every year on the railways, describing the deaths as an annual “massacre” due mainly to poor safety standards.

Karnataka: File report on farmer deaths, HC tells State Government

August 15, 2015 by Nasheman

karnataka high court

Bengaluru: State government has been asked to file an affidavit in two weeks listing out the measures taken to prevent farmers from committing suicide by High Court on Friday.

The directive came from a division bench of acting Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice B V Nagarathna which was hearing the PIL filed by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority over non-implementation of programmes launched for farmers such as Suvarna bhoomi.

Advocate Poonam Patil, representing KSLSA, drew the attention of the bench to the issues of farmers. Advocate General Ravivarma Kumar sought two weeks’ time to file the affidavit. Kumar told the court that the state is facing severe drought. He also said that the farmers are further stressed due to falling prices of sugar — it has dropped from Rs 30 to Rs 20 per kg — and non-payment of dues by sugar mills.

Patriotic fervour, freedom spirit mark Independence Day in Karnataka

August 15, 2015 by Nasheman

Siddaramiah

Bengaluru: Patriotic fervour and the spirit of freedom and nationalism marked the 69th Independence Day celebrations in Karnataka on Saturday.

Chief Minister Siddaramiah unfurled the tri-colour and sang the national anthem along with about 10,000 people who gathered at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground in the city centre for the grand occasion.

Earlier, a military helicopter hovered over the sprawling ground showering red rose petals around the podium, exciting the gathering and evoking applause.

Standing on an open jeep, the chief minister drove around for guard of honour and received salute from contingents of the three services (army, navy and air force), state police, home guards and fire forces at the podium.

After Siddaramaiah addressed the gathering in Kannada, battalions of the three services, state reserve police, home guards, NCC and Bharat Scouts and Guides, contingents of about 3,000 boys and girls from city school sand music bands treated the audience with a two-hour long impressive march past and historical and cultural shows, with patriotic songs renting the air.

Martial arts and daring feats and acrobatics on motorcycles by the military as well as the state police teams kept the crowds spellbound.

Later, the chief minister presented medals and awards to police officers and distributed prizes to the participating organisations. Reports from across the state said the national flag was hoisted in the respective districts by state cabinet ministers and deputy commissioners.

In Mangaluru, about 350 km away from here, about 500 students held a 350-metre long national flag in a long line that spilled into the main street from their school playground.
