February 2, 2016 by Nasheman

Prophet Muhammad
An inter-religious conference on the theme ‘Prophet Muhammad – Pinnacle of Humanity’ was conducted on 30th January 2016 at Dr. Ambedkar Bhavan, Bangalore, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The program began with the recitation of the Quran followed by the welcome address given by Dr. Saad Mohammad Belgami, President JIH Bangalore Metro who welcomed all the delegates and participants.

The key note address delivered by Moulana Syed Jalaluddin Umri (National President, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind). He said that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had come with the same message with which the previous prophets had come and he (peace be upon him) invited people to worship only one God who is the only creator of this universe and He who made everyone equal, more honourable is the one who fears God most. Prophet Mohammad preached rights and duties of every relationship and demonstrated it through his own behaviour and conduct.

The programme was followed by a talk by Sri Sri Shivanubhava Shivarudra Swamiji from Belimatha Mahasamsthana, Bangalore. He urged the audience to face every problem with firmness and always remember that God is with us and He will help us in every difficulty.

Later, Justice M. N. Venkatachaliah (Former Chief Justice of India) said that the world is looking at India as to how we will conduct ourselves as one human family and in order to be successful in this task we need the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Later, Nadoja Sri Hampa Nagarajaiah (Renowned Litterateur) also addressed the gathering. The programme was followed by a talk by Giani Baldev Singh (Head Priest, Gurudwara Ulsoor, Bangalore). He said that God fearing people would worry about humanity and if we forget the teachings of the messengers then we would be deteriorated in life.

The program concluded on a positive note with a final talk by Mohammed Kunhi (Manager, Shanti Prakashana, Mangalore). More than a thousand people participated in the conference.

Prophet Mohammed (PBUH): The Pinnacle of Humanity, An inter-religious Conference

January 23, 2016 by Nasheman

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind

Prophet Muhammed (PBUH), is the greatest man ever to walk on the face of the earth. His achievements and contributions to humanity are immense and unparalleled. Born 1490 years ago in an ignorant and uncivilized society in Arabia, he brought about a comprehensive and nearly bloodless revolution in a short period of 23 years which continues to expand even to this day, inspiring and guiding large section of humanity across the globe.  He is the final messenger of Allah, truly universal in his address and leadership.  He is the perfect example, Pinnacle of humanity and benefactor of mankind.  The book revealed on him, the Holy Quran, remains in its original form and his life and teachings have been preserved in authentic and exquisite detail.  Quran happens to be the most widely read book today and the Prophet the most written about personality.  If ever the world could unite on humanitarian principles it is only possible under the noble leadership of this great Prophet.

This unrivalled  position of the Prophet of Islam has been the pride of his followers but envy of his enemies.  Hence the scorn, insults and accusations heaped upon him all along history.  This has become more frequent and heinous in the recent years, evoking widespread anger and condemnation.

While protests and demonstrations are an immediate and legitimate reaction, what is more important is to convey and communicate to the people at large both in word and deed the true and humanitarian teachings of the Prophet. The cobweb of misunderstandings needs to be cleared  and the solution and salvation that Islam can offer to the problem riddled and ailing humanity today brought forth clearly.

Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Bangalore has launched a 21 day campaign to educate fellow citizens of all faiths, about the true life and teachings of the Holy Prophet from 10 th to 30th Jan. 2016.

About 15000 folders and 6000 small books on Prophet in different languages will be distributed personally in door to door meetings.  Small gatherings will also be organized for the same all over the City. Finally a large inter religious conference will be held on the topic ‘‘Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) – Pinnacle of Humanity’’ at Ambedkar Bhavan, Millers Road, Bangalore on Saturday, 30th Jan. 2016 at 7-00PM.  This will be addressed by a galaxy of luminaries and religious heads.  Moulana Syed Jalaluddin Umri, All India President, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, will deliver the keynote address.  Sri Sri Shivanubhava Shivarudra Swamiji of Belimath, Mr. Venkatachaliah, Former Chief Justice of India, Rev.Bernard Moras, Archbishop of Bangalore, Giani Baldev Singh, Head Priest Gurudwara, Ulsoor, renowned litterateur Hampa Nagarajaiah and  Mr. Mohammed Kunhi, manager Shanthi Prakashana will also address.

Fragments of what could be world’s oldest Quran have been found in the U.K.

The university's academics were "startled" when the radiocarbon dating tests showed it was so old

The university’s academics were “startled” when the radiocarbon dating tests showed it was so old.

by Sean Coughlan, BBC

What may be the world’s oldest fragments of the Koran have been found by the University of Birmingham.

Radiocarbon dating found the manuscript to be at least 1,370 years old, making it among the earliest in existence.

The pages of the Muslim holy text had remained unrecognised in the university library for almost a century.

The British Library’s expert on such manuscripts, Dr Muhammad Isa Waley, said this “exciting discovery” would make Muslims “rejoice”.

The manuscript had been kept with a collection of other Middle Eastern books and documents, without being identified as one of the oldest fragments of the Koran in the world.

Oldest texts

When a PhD researcher, Alba Fedeli, looked more closely at these pages it was decided to carry out a radiocarbon dating test and the results were “startling”.

The university’s director of special collections, Susan Worrall, said researchers had not expected “in our wildest dreams” that it would be so old.

“Finding out we had one of the oldest fragments of the Koran in the whole world has been fantastically exciting.”

The University of Birmingham’s manuscript was in a collection brought back from the Middle East

The tests, carried out by the Oxford University Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, showed that the fragments, written on sheep or goat skin, were among the very oldest surviving texts of the Koran.

These tests provide a range of dates, showing that, with a probability of more than 95%, the parchment was from between 568 and 645.

“They could well take us back to within a few years of the actual founding of Islam,” said David Thomas, the university’s professor of Christianity and Islam.

“According to Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad received the revelations that form the Koran, the scripture of Islam, between the years 610 and 632, the year of his death.”

Prof Thomas says the dating of the Birmingham folios would mean it was quite possible that the person who had written them would have been alive at the time of the Prophet Muhammad.

“The person who actually wrote it could well have known the Prophet Muhammad. He would have seen him probably, he would maybe have heard him preach. He may have known him personally – and that really is quite a thought to conjure with,” he says.

First-hand witness

Prof Thomas says that some of the passages of the Koran were written down on parchment, stone, palm leaves and the shoulder blades of camels – and a final version, collected in book form, was completed in about 650.

Prof Thomas says the writer of this manuscript could have heard the Prophet Muhammad preach

He says that “the parts of the Koran that are written on this parchment can, with a degree of confidence, be dated to less than two decades after Muhammad’s death”.

“These portions must have been in a form that is very close to the form of the Koran read today, supporting the view that the text has undergone little or no alteration and that it can be dated to a point very close to the time it was believed to be revealed.”

Susan Worrall says the university wants to put this internationally significant discovery on public display

The manuscript, written in “Hijazi script”, an early form of written Arabic, becomes one of the oldest known fragments of the Koran.

Because radiocarbon dating creates a range of possible ages, there is a handful of other manuscripts in public and private collections which overlap. So this makes it impossible to say that any is definitively the oldest.

But the latest possible date of the Birmingham discovery – 645 – would put it among the very oldest.

‘Precious survivor’

Dr Waley, curator for such manuscripts at the British Library, said “these two folios, in a beautiful and surprisingly legible Hijazi hand, almost certainly date from the time of the first three caliphs”.

The first three caliphs were leaders in the Muslim community between about 632 and 656.

Dr Waley says that under the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, copies of the “definitive edition” were distributed.

“The Muslim community was not wealthy enough to stockpile animal skins for decades, and to produce a complete Mushaf, or copy, of the Holy Koran required a great many of them.”

Dr Waley suggests that the manuscript found by Birmingham is a “precious survivor” of a copy from that era or could be even earlier.

“In any case, this – along with the sheer beauty of the content and the surprisingly clear Hijazi script – is news to rejoice Muslim hearts.”

Muhammad Afzal of Birmingham Central Mosque said he was very moved to see the manuscript

The manuscript is part of the Mingana Collection of more than 3,000 Middle Eastern documents gathered in the 1920s by Alphonse Mingana, a Chaldean priest born near Mosul in modern-day Iraq.

He was sponsored to take collecting trips to the Middle East by Edward Cadbury, who was part of the chocolate-making dynasty.

The local Muslim community has already expressed its delight at the discovery in their city and the university says the manuscript will be put on public display.

“When I saw these pages I was very moved. There were tears of joy and emotion in my eyes. And I’m sure people from all over the UK will come to Birmingham to have a glimpse of these pages,” said Muhammad Afzal, chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque.

The university says the Koran fragments will go on display in the Barber Institute in Birmingham in October.

Prof Thomas says it will show people in Birmingham that they have a “treasure that is second to none”.

UK Muslims decry move to host Prophet Muhammad exhibit

July 4, 2015 by Nasheman

UK-based anti-Sharia campaign group will host an exhibition featuring cartoons of the prophet of Islam in September.

Prophet Muhammad

by Azad Essa, Al Jazeera

Muslim organisations in the UK have condemned a move by an anti-Sharia campaign group to host an exhibition featuring cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in London in September.

Azad Ali, chair of the Muslim Safety Forum based in London, told Al Jazeera on Friday the proposed “Muhammad Cartoon Exhibit” by UK-based Sharia Watch was an attempt to taunt the tolerance levels of British Muslims, and described the move as a cheap attempt to create disharmony in the UK.

“They keep on pushing the boundary, testing the levels and always upping the ante … this is what this is about: getting a reaction from Muslims and looking for a justification to demonise us,” Ali said.

“We are looking to find ways for a positive discussion to come out of this, but no one thinks the planned event is anything but racist,” he said.

The exhibit is set to feature controversial Dutch politician Geert Wilders as a speaker. Wilders is known to be vehemently anti-Islam.

Talking to Al Jazeera, Miqdaad Versi, assistant secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said the proposed event illustrated that Islamophobia had now become socially acceptable in Britain.

“It [Islamophobia] has become mainstream, and acceptable, and this has provided a platform for more extreme views to surface,” Versi said.

Depictions of Prophet Muhammad are banned in Islam and many Muslims say they are being continuously provoked and taunted with demeaning depictions of the prophet that are often seen as “vile and racist”.

In 2006, violent protests erupted in parts of the Arab world and South Asia as Muslims took to the streets to demonstrate against the publication of cartoons of Prophet Muhammad by the Jyllands-Posten newspaper in Denmark.

The same cartoons were published by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, prompting an arson attack on the newspaper in 2011.

Climate of fear’

Charlie Hebdo was brutally attacked in January by two gunmen, resulting in the murder of 12 people.

In May, two gunmen attacked an art exhibition in Garland, Texas where caricatures of Prophet Muhammad were being exhibited.

UK-based Sharia Watch said on Tuesday the event had been organised to honour those who “risk their lives in defence of free expression, and of those who have been murdered in this cause”.

Anne Marie Waters, director of Sharia Watch, said in the statement that the event was about freedom of expression.

“The outlook for our democracy depends on the actions we take today. We owe it to future generations to pass on the freedom we have enjoyed,” Waters said.

But many commentators say the cartoons of Prophet Muhammad have little to do with free speech.

In June, Jordan Denari, a research fellow at Georgetown University’s Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, said that sharing cartoons of the prophet contributed “to an existing climate of fear in which Muslims are seen as a threat – a climate that endangers Muslims in the West”.

“These cartoons play into the worst stereotypes about Muslims. Almost all of the cartoons displayed at the Garland contest portrayed Muhammad in a negative light, showing the prophet as violent, backward, sexually perverted, and intolerant of non-Muslims,” Denari wrote.

Earlier in June, Geert Wilders said he wanted to showcase cartoons of Prophet Muhammad on Dutch television on airtime usually reserved for political parties. This was in response to a decision by the Dutch parliament not to display the toons.

Two gunmen have been shot dead outside a controversial exhibition featuring cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammad in Dallas in Texas, US authorities say.

The shooting was reported shortly before 7pm local time on Sunday outside the Curtis Culwell Center in the Dallas suburb of Garland.

The two armed suspects drove up to the front of the building in a car as the event, called the Muhammad Art Exhibit, was coming to an end, and began shooting at a security officer, the city said in a message posted online.

Garland police officers then exchanged fire with the gunmen and both suspects were shot dead, the city said.

The security guard was shot in the ankle in the gunfire, but his injuries were not considered serious and he has already been discharged from hospital.

A police bomb squad is reportedly at the scene and is inspecting the dead gunmen’s car.

A Garland police spokesman, Joe Harn, said there was a large police presence already at the scene, as police “had prepared for this event, in case something like this happened”.

Lockdown

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro, who is near the scene of the shooting, said an area of about a kilometre radius around the incident had been locked down, following reports that a third suspect was seen near a shopping centre.

A New York-based group called the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) had claimed it was exercising their right of free expression in running the contest.

The judging was supposed to be on Sunday, with the winner from some reported 350 entries from around the country offered a $10,000 prize.

Zhou-Castro said the woman who led the AFDI group, Pamela Geller, was “known to make anti-Muslim statements”, and had gone to the courts several times to be able to place anti-Muslim advertisements around New York.

Following the shooting, Geller had tweeted from inside the cultural centre that the incident was “a war on free speech”, however her critics on Twitter said she had “been trying to provoke an incident like this for years”.

Islam forbids depictions of its prophet.

Controversial advertisement

In April, AFDI won a case in the US federal court that allowed it to display a controversial advertisement referring to Muslims killing Jews on New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses.

US District Judge John Koeltl in Manhattan said the AFDI ad, which had previously run in Chicago and San Francisco, was protected speech under the First Amendment of the US constitution.

Similar AFDI campaigns have also run elsewhere, including in Washington DC.

The ad portrayed a menacing man wearing a scarf around his head and face, included a quotation “Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah” was attributed to “Hamas MTV”, and then stated: “That’s His Jihad. What’s yours?”

Geert Wilders, the Dutch far-right politician who is well-known for his anti-Islam beliefs, was one of the main speakers during the event. Wilders shared on his Twitter account that he had just left the building before the shooting.

Wilders caused a scandal last March when speaking in The Hague he asked party supporters whether they wanted “fewer or more Moroccans in the city and in the Netherlands”.

“Fewer! Fewer!” the crowd shouted as a smiling Wilders answered: “Then we’re going to take care of that.”

The alleged Saudi plan to move the Prophet’s tomb, truth or hype?

September 5, 2014 by Nasheman

Masjid-an-Nabwi

Early this week, The Independent, one of UK’s leading national newspaper, published an article citing a supposedly “leading Saudi academic”, who it says has exposed a proposed document by another Saudi academic, who has allegedly called for the removal of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS)’s “remains to the nearby al-Baqi cemetery, where they would be interred anonymously.”

The 61 -page document by Dr. Ali bin Abdulaziz al-Shabal of the Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh, is said to have been circulated to the Committee of the Presidency of the Two Mosques, which the paper claims has outlines for destroying chambers around the Prophet (SAWS)’s tomb.

The words in the article reads more like that of a soothsayer than of a reporter, for since its publication, the news has caused an uproar across the Muslim world, with many condemning the supposed proposal.

In Indonesia, Hasyim Muzadi, a former chairman of the country’s largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has condemned and strongly opposed the alleged relocation idea and said that, “Saudi will be doomed if it goes ahead with the plan.”

Dr. Abdul Ruff writing in India’s MuslimMirror states that, “It is apparent that mischievous devils are slowing taking control of Islamic Holy sites in Saudi Arabia, even as Saudi regime moves faster than even to promote anti-Islamic forces settle down in Western and Israeli terrocracies.”

The writer, whose language is very evidently polarized against the regime in Saudi Arabia goes on to state, without citing any evidence that, “Even the very thought to destroying the tomb of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (SAWS) would not have crossed the minds of ordinary, sincere Muslims. This is state mischief, perhaps took birth either in Washington or London and conveyed ot the king himself who seems to have found the “scholars” to express it openly.”

What is apparent in the above statements, and in the anger which has stirred among many Muslims following this supposed news, is that it is based entirely on an article, which was written by sidelining all journalistic principles, primarily among which is to cite evidence for what is being claimed.

According to Hasib Noor, a student of Islamic Law at the University of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, Dr. Irfan Al-Alawi, the source of the Independent article, who the paper cites as a “leading Saudi academic”, is in fact based out of Washington D.C.

In his response to the alleged destruction plans, he writes that, “The source mentioned in the article, Dr. Irfan Al-Alawi,  of the Islamic Heritage Research Foundation, represents a polarizing organization called the Center of Islamic Pluralism based out of Washington D.C. The background, connection, and history of the organization and Dr. Irfan Al-Alawi is deserving of an entire separate article.

The timing of this article is something that came to light as research is done by close friends that showed that the Independent regularly posts articles every year that seemingly recycled the same story regarding the destruction of masjid Nabwi, Mecca and/or the Prophet’s ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) tomb. These articles date as far back as least to 2011. Dr. Alawi is consistently used as a source annually on this topic in 2011, 2012, 2013 and now with the most recent one in 2014. One can recognize a clear trend or what some might call agenda.”

About the document and Dr. al-Shabal, he says that, “The article discusses a 61-page document by a “leading Islamic academic Dr Ali ibn AbdulAziz al-Shabal.” The reality is he is not a leading academic, unheard of by the Center of Historical Studies, and someone unknown until the Independent coins him as a “leading Islamic academic” figure.

The document he wrote is a paper that post-doctoral candidates in Saudi Arabian universities write in order to reach the level of adjunct professor. Al-Shabal teaches at imam University. He submitted this paper to the Committee of the Presidency of the Two Masjids in order to establish credibility and at the end of his paper he makes suggestions. He did not submit a proposal to the government; that was never intended—let alone accepted. It is an entry submitted to an academic journal that was taken completely out of context in the Independent article—no, not out of context, seemingly used for an intended purpose.”

Yasir Qadhi, an American Muslim scholar and writer said that, “the paper (by al-Shabal) itself does not actually state that the blessed grave should be touched. No sane Muslim would ever suggest that. Rather, what it suggests is that the masjid itself should be replanned in the new construction so that the blessed grave would be outside of the new masjid boundaries. So, what the author suggested was to change the boundary of the masjid, not that of the grave.”

He added that, “this view is a minority view and has been soundly rejected by mainstream Salafi (referred derisively as Wahabbis by many) and all non-Salafi scholars. Historically, there has never been any serious opposition to the Umayyad inclusion of the blessed grave into the Prophet (SAWS)’s masjid (which occurred in 88 AH), and no major scholar of any madhhab has ever called for the Prophet’s (SAWS) masjid boundaries to be redrawn.”

Commenting on the reaction from the Muslims, Hasib further notes that, “Many are in deep hate mode and have lunged full on attacks… without checking the facts.

When the facts are pointed out to many that the article contains false information, most seem to not care, “the reality is we can’t forget that Saudi did…” or “but in Saudi…” type rhetoric is spreading. Even academics that lay claim to scholastic standard, even journalists, even educators… many are falling prey to the exact intention of the article —the sowing of discord.

For many equating Saudi to not just a government but to an ideology that pigeonhole others is becoming comfortable, again. The “they” and “us” is something that spread through the discussions on social media, no matter which “spectrum” the person belonged to. The standing and representing movements rather than Islam again reared its ugly head.

Many are letting their feelings dictate their rationale—it doesn’t matter if the assertions in the article are false, there is injustice that needs to be spoken against, and criticism that needs to be made.”

The whole episode only goes on to show, how mainstream media breeds on sensationalism, and how easily many Muslims go on to demonize each other, even though only a few weeks ago, many had called for a boycott of many media outlets claiming it to be bankrolled by the Zionists.
