Protesting against Constitution Hindu Mahasabha observes black day on R-Day

January 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Akhil Bharatiya hindusabha

Meerut: At a time when the country is engrossed in Republic Day celebrations, at least 50 persons under the banner of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha waved black flags to observe ‘Black Day’ and ‘mourn’ the Constitution of India.

The leaders of the Hindutva outfit claimed to have been celebrating the day for the past five decades to put forward their demand of declaring India a ‘Hindu Rasthra’ and protest against the Constitution which claims that India is a ‘secular country.’

“The Partition of India took place on the basis of religion and eventually India was declared a secular country. Had India been secular, it would have had a Uniform Civil Code, which is not the case. We have been observing this day for over five decades now and will continue until India is declared a Hindu Rashtra”, said Ashok Kumar Sharma, national vice president, Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha.

To mark ‘Black Day’ or ‘Kaala Divas’ – as the party members call it, member of the organization waved black flags at the office of Hindu Mahasabha on Sharda road on the eve of R-Day.

Bharat Rajput, district president, Hindu Mahasabha, Meerut, said, “We do not believe in the Constitution of India and have been protesting against it for the past 50 years. Secularism doesn’t exist in India and that is why we mourn the Constitution. When India was divided, Pakistan was given the title of Islamic state then why was India not given the title of a Hindu Rashtra? It is this Constitution, which has failed to recognize India as a Hindu state that all of us are against.”

Earlier, arrests used to take place whenever black flags were waved outside the office but the court refused arrests after 1987. Every year, party members hand over a memorandum to the station officer of Bhrampuri police station, who further gives it to the district magistrate.

India celebrates 67th Republic Day with majestic parade

January 26, 2016 by Nasheman

Republic Day

New Delhi: India’s military prowess and multi-hued images of the country’s rich cultural diversity and achievements in various fields were on display at the majestic Rajpath today during 67th Republic Day parade which was graced by French President Francois Hollande as the chief guest.

Thousands of people on both sides of the imposing Rajpath, India’s ceremonial boulevard facing the seat of power Raisina Hills, braved the winter chill and cheered loudly as the marching contingents and tableux went past them.

The national capital, particularly the Central and New Delhi areas, were brought under unprecedented security blanket as thousands of personnel kept a hawk-eye vigil to thwart any untoward incident. There were intelligence inputs that terror groups may target some important installations in the city.

Hollande was seated between President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who wore a marigold coloured ‘safa'(turban). Modi was seen explaining things to Hollande on several occasions during the one-and-a-half-hour-long event. This year the duration of the parade has been curtailed from more than two hours to 90 minutes.

A French military contingent also marched down the Rajpath, a first by any foreign armed force. In 2009, an Indian contingent had also participated in France’s annual Bastille Day parade.

Apart from India’s missile firing capability T-90 ‘Bhishma’ tank, Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP II (Sarath), Mobile Autonomous Launcher of the BrahMos Missile System, Akash Weapon System, Smerch Launcher Vehicles, the highlights of the parade also included a canine squad.

The synchronised military and police contingents led by General Officer Commanding (Delhi), Lt General Rajan Ravindran marched proudly to the lilting tunes of the bands through Rajpath where Mukherjee, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, took the salute from a specially erected dais.

Earlier, Hollande, who is on a three-day state visit, arrived with Mukherjee and was received by Modi who introduced him to the three services chief — Army, Air Force and Navy.

Alongside Hollande, the fifth French President to attend the celebrations, the parade was watched by Vice-President Hamid Ansari, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, BJP president Amit Shah and the country’s top political and military brass, besides the diplomatic community.

Minutes before the parade began, Modi, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and the three service chiefs laid wreaths at ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’, the war memorial at the India Gate where an eternal flame burns in memory of those who laid down their lives defending the frontiers of the nation.

Before the start of the ceremonial parade, Mukherjee presented the Ashok Chakra (Posthumous), highest peacetime gallentry award, to Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami of 9 Para (Special Force) for his bravery in fighting with terrorists on the intervening night of September 2/3 last year in Haphruda forest at Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. The award was received by his wife Bhavna Goswami.

SC slams Centre: 100 Crore for R-Day parade, but no compensation to farmers

February 12, 2015 by Nasheman

Make in India tableau

New Delhi: The Supreme Court slammed the Union government today for spending crores on the Republic Day parade but delaying the payment of compensation to farmers for land acquired from them.

“You spend Rs. 100 crores on Republic Day parade but when it comes to payment of compensation to farmers, you file appeals,” Chief Justice HL Dattu told the Centre.

The court’s observation came during a hearing of the Defence Ministry’s appeals relating to compensation to farmers on land acquisition in cantonment areas in Punjab.

The Punjab and Haryana high court had awarded a substantial compensation to farmers and the ministry had appealed against it.

But the Supreme Court declined to interfere, saying, “farmers are deprived of reasonable compensation”. The government, the court said, spends “so much money on litigations” but “takes a different stand” when it comes to paying farmers.

The Chief Justice also criticised the Union government for not creating enough infrastructure for the functioning of tribunals. “If you are unable to provide accommodation, why create such tribunals?” the court said.

Justice Dattu said recently, a retired Supreme Court Judge who was appointed on a tribunal, was not provided accommodation.

“I am anguished that you are pushing them (Judges) to Commonwealth village. Why different treatment for them? You must create infrastructure before creating tribunals,” the court said.

Original preamble of Constitution did not have 'secular', 'socialist': I&B Minister

January 29, 2015 by Nasheman

preamble-india

New Delhi: The original preamble of the Constitution did not have the words “socialist” and “secular”, said Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore Wednesday.

The government has been criticised over a Republic Day advertisement, which showed the preamble without the two words.

The minister said a picture of the original preamble was used for the advertisement to “honour” it.

He also tweeted pictures of the preamble before and after the 42nd Amendment, which added the words “secular” and “socialist” to it. “This is the original preamble. The words ‘Socialist’ and ‘Secular’ were added in 1976,” he added.

“Let me assure you, we are celebrating the 66th Republic Day, that is, we are celebrating an anniversary of the preamble that was made way back then,” Rathore told reporters.

“The photograph that we have put is of the first preamble that our great leaders had made at that point of time,” Rathore said.

He added that the two words were included after the 42nd Constitutional Amendment in 1976.

Rathore’s comments came after row erupted when an advertisement issued by the I&B Ministry carried a picture of the Preamble to the Constitution as it appeared before the 42nd Amendment, without the words ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’.

Welcoming the move, Shiv Sena has demanded “permanent deletion” of the words ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ from the Constitution.

“We welcome the exclusion of the (secular and socialist) words from the Republic Day advertisement. Though it might have been done inadvertently, it is like honouring the feelings of the people of India. If these words were deleted by mistake this time, they should be deleted from the Constitution permanently,” Sena MP Sanjay Raut said.

Congress leader Manish Tewari attacked the Centre on the issue, claiming the government advertisement “deleted” the two words, which was only a prelude to their “substitution” with “communal” and “corporate”.

The advertisement showed a picture of the Preamble in the background with a quote from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and pictures of some citizens in the foreground.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala Monday lauded the Congress-led state government for launching many welfare schemes and public services like Mobile One project across the state on the occasion of 66th Republic Day.

In a brief address on this special occasion, Governor Vala hoisted the national flag and said that the state government has made remarkable progress in many fields, especially in public services, welfare and development schemes.

“The Mobile One project, launched to provide a number of services to the public, has accomplished a rare feat. Similarly, health scheme brought down infant mortality and the ‘Ksheera Baghya’ scheme, in which free milk is distributed among schoolchildren thrice a week, has reduced malnutrition among them,” he said.

The governor also commended the state government for implementing drinking water projects in drought-prone villages during this fiscal (2014-15).

“We have to strive hard to take our nation forward on the development path and to make the mantra — ‘Progress of Karnataka is for the country’s progress’ meaningful,” Vala said, urging the public to take a pledge for ensuring Swachh Bharat (clean India) through Swachh Karnataka (clean Karnataka).

Alluding to Swami Vivekananda’s words – You can give bread to a man and feed for a day but it is better to teach him to earn bread – Governor Vala exhorted the people to imbibe Vivekananda’s ideologoy.

Noting that Karnataka holds special significance in the country due to the strides it has made in the fields like software, biotech, aeronautics, defence, research, space and innovation, the governor said though people’s languages and attires vary from state to state, India has one identity.

“With this feeling (of oneness), we should rise above differences of religion, caste, colour and communities and march ahead on building the nation strong,” he noted.

Earlier, pomp and pageantry marked the Republic Day celebrations where the governor took salute during the parade amid tight security.

An air force helicopter showered rose petals at the podium, where Governor Vala, Chief Minister Siddarmaiah and other dignitaries were seated.

About 8,000 people, including children, who congregated on this occasion, cheered the services personnel and other participants during the march past and show of strength.

About 2,500 police personnel had been deployed for a fool-proof security.

Police across the city were also on high alert as part of the security drill with reinforcements at vital installations and in sensitive (VIP) areas.

About 40 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras were installed in and around the venue to monitor movement of people, participants and dignitaries.

The float, which displayed a working model of the ‘Make in India’ lion, invited manufacturers and investors to participate in the initiative.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Republic Day parade chief guest US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at their arrival at the saluting dais at Rajpath.

Religion can’t be made cause of conflict, says President; stresses on tolerance on Republic Day

January 26, 2015 by Nasheman

Republic Day Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi: Asserting that religion cannot be made a cause of conflict, President Pranab Mukherjee today said “tolerance” and promotion of goodwill between diverse communities needs to be preserved with “utmost care and vigilance”.

In his address to the nation on the eve of 66th Republic Day, the President quoted Mahatma Gandhi, “religion is a force for unity” and said, “we cannot make it a cause of conflict” as wisdom of India always teaches “unity is strength, dominance is weakness.”

He said the Constitution is the holy book of democracy and a “lodestar” for the socio-economic transformation of an India whose civilization has celebrated pluralism, advocated tolerance and promoted goodwill between diverse communities.

“These values, however, need to be preserved with utmost care and vigilance,” he said.

The comments of the President came at a time when some right wing parties have been sparking one controversy after another by raising issues like ‘ghar wapsi’, eulogiusing Nathuram Godse, pressing for having 10 kids for increasing Hindu population and some ministers making inappropriate comments about minorities.

The freedom inherent in democracy sometimes generates an unhappy by-product when political discourse becomes a “competition in hysteria that is abhorrent to our traditional ethos. The violence of the tongue cuts and wounds people’s hearts,” Mukherjee said.

On the issue of India being termed as a “soft power”, he said, “the most powerful example of India’s soft power, in an international environment where so many countries are sinking into the morass of theocratic violence, lies in our definition of the relationship between faith and polity.

“We have always reposed our trust in faith-equality where every faith is equal before the law and every culture blends into another to create a positive dynamic,” the President said.

Speaking about the menace of terrorism, Mukherjee made a veiled reference about Pakistan saying that the country’s “adversaries” will stop at nothing to disrupt India’s progress.

The multi-nation conflict has converted boundaries into “bloodlines, and turned terrorism into an industry of evil.

“Terrorism and violence are seeping across our borders. While peace, non-violence and good neighbourly intentions should remain the fundamentals of our foreign policy, we cannot afford to be complacent about adversaries who will stop at nothing to disrupt our progress towards a prosperous and equitable India,” he said.

Mukherjee said the country had the strength, confidence and determination to defeat architects of “this war against our people.

“Repeated violations of the ceasefire along the Line of Control and terrorist attacks must get an integrated response through incisive diplomacy and impregnable security mechanisms. The world must join India in fighting the menace of terrorism,” he said.

On the economic issue, the President said 2015 is a year of hope and key economic indicators provide for “much optimism”.

He said five per cent plus growth rates each in the first two quarter of the current fiscal is “healthy sign for an early reversion to the high growth trajectory of 7-8 per cent.

Highlighting Gandhi’s vision, Mukherjee said the call for ‘Purna Swaraj’ was given under his leadership at Congress conclave in January 26, 1929. He said Gandhi started celebrating January 26, 1930 as Independence Day.

“From then on, the Nation took a pledge on this day every year to carry on the freedom struggle till we attained it,” Mukherjee said.

The President said the framework of a Constitution, which was charted in 1950, two years after his martyrdom, that has made India a role model for today’s world, was constructed out of Gandhi’s philosophy.

He said Constitution’s essence lay in four principles: democracy; freedom of faith; gender equality; and an economic upsurge for those trapped in the curse of dire poverty which were made Constitutional obligations.

The country’s resolve to eliminate poverty through inclusive development has to be a step in the direction of Gandhi talisman for the country’s rulers which said whenever you are in doubt…recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen and ask yourself…will it lead to swaraj for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?, he said.

The President said we must strive for the highest quality in our educational institutions so that we can take our place, within a visible future, among the knowledge leaders of the 21st century.

He also wanted that special stress be laid on the culture of books and reading, which takes knowledge beyond the classroom and frees imagination from stress of the immediate and the utilitarian.

“We must be a creative people, nourished by innumerable, interlinked rivers of ideas,” he said.

The youth must lead the way to mastery of technology and communication in a universe where the cloud has become a library without frontiers, and vast opportunity awaits within the computer in your palm. “The 21st century is within India’s grasp.” the President said.
