Hundreds of Palestinians have been injured by Israeli gunfire – and two Palestinian youths were killed – over the past three days in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem amid ongoing clashes with Israeli security forces.

According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 500 Palestinians have been injured in clashes initially triggered by recent violence at East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, to which the Israeli authorities continue to restrict access to Palestinian Muslim worshipers.

“Since Oct. 3, at least 500 Palestinians have been injured in clashes with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem,” the Palestinian Red Crescent said in statement. “Forty-one Palestinians have been injured by live ammunition, 134 by rubber bullets and 307 by excessive teargas, while 18 others were beaten.”

The organization went on to say it had documented at least 42 injuries by Israeli gunfire on Monday alone.

“Five Palestinians were injured by live ammunition and eight by rubber bullets on Monday, while 26 suffered excessive teargas inhalation,” the Red Crescent said.

On Sunday, Abd al-Rahman Obaid Allah, a 13-year-old Palestinian child, was killed by Israeli gunfire in the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the boy was shot in the chest by an Israeli sniper.

A second Palestinian youth, 18 years old, was also reportedly killed by Israeli gunfire on the same day.

Tensions in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem have been exacerbated by the killing last week of two Jewish settlers near the Jewish-only Itamar Settlement near the West Bank city of Nablus.

Over the past three days, several violent clashes have erupted between Palestinian youths and Israeli troops in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Scientists from Japan, Canada win Nobel Prize in Physics

October 6, 2015 by Nasheman

Takaaki Kajita Arthur B McDonald

by Don Melvin, CNN

London: Two scientists have won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking work showing that neutrinos — electrically neutral subatomic particles — have mass, contrary to what had been thought.

The prize was awarded to Takaaki Kajita and Arthur B. McDonald, the Nobel Committee said Tuesday, “for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass.”

Kajita works at the University of Tokyo, in Kashiwa, Japan. McDonald works at Queen’s University, in Kingston, Canada.

The Nobel Committee said the discovery — arcane to nonscientists — has changed our understanding of matter, and may yet change our view of the universe.

“The Nobel Prize in Physics 2015 recognizes Takaaki Kajita in Japan and Arthur B. McDonald in Canada, for their key contributions to the experiments which demonstrated that neutrinos change identities,” the Nobel Committee’s statement said. “This metamorphosis requires that neutrinos have mass. The discovery has changed our understanding of the innermost workings of matter and can prove crucial to our view of the universe.”

A neutrino is “an elementary particle which holds no electrical charge, travels at nearly the speed of light, and passes through ordinary matter with virtually no interaction,” according to the physics.about.com website.

Scientists say that neutrinos, because they interact weakly with other particles, can probe environments that other kinds of energy, such as light or radio waves, cannot penetrate.

Last year’s Nobel winners in physics were two scientists in Japan and one at the University of California, Santa Barbara for helping create the LED light, a transformational and ubiquitous source that now lights up everything from our living rooms to our flashlights to our smart phones.

Since 1901, the committee has handed out the Nobel Prize in Physics 108 times. The youngest recipient was Lawrence Bragg, who won in 1915 at the age of 25. The oldest physics laureate was Raymond Davis Jr., who was 88 years old when he was awarded the prize in 2002.

John Bardeen was the only physicist to receive the prize twice, for work in semiconductors and superconductivity.

In the coming days, the Nobel committee also will announce prizes in chemistry, literature, peace and economics.

On Monday, three scientists shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their work on parasitic diseases.

Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel created the prizes in 1895 to honor work in physics, chemistry, literature and peace. The economics prize, established in 1968 as a memorial to Nobel, was first awarded in 1969.

BPO employee gangrape: Two suspects being interrogated

October 6, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Bengaluru: Two persons were being questioned in connection with the alleged gangrape of a call centre employee in a moving van here.

“We have rounded up two persons and brought them to the Madiwala Police Station where the case has been registered. We are verifying whether they were the ones who allegedly gangraped the call centre woman employee,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohini Katoch Sepat told PTI.

In a reminder of the horrific 2012 gangrape of a paramedical student in Delhi, the woman in her early 20s was waiting to hail an autorickshaw to return to her PG home and boarded the van which stopped by after she was offered a drop.

The woman was allegedly gangraped on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday by the driver and the cleaner. One allegedly raped her in the vehicle and the other in a deserted spot before she was dropped in Madiwala area here from where she was picked up after a three-hour long ordeal.

The woman, who was initially reluctant to lodge a complaint, was persuaded to do so, police said. She was allegedly threatened by the criminal duo that she would be killed if she complained to police.  She was admitted to a hospital on Sunday and discharged yesterday.

Police said they have clues, as they began analysing the CCTV footage at traffic signals along the route taken by the van, which also passed by a police station.

In 2005, a 24-year old employee of a city-based multinational firm was raped and murdered by the cab driver who was later sentenced for life.

FIR against Akbaruddin Owaisi for his speech

October 5, 2015 by Nasheman

Asaduddin Owaisi

Kishanganj: An FIR was today lodged against All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi by Kishanganj district administration for allegedly making inflammatory speech at an election rally here yesterday.

The police are also probing whether damage to idols at two temples in the town, which were discovered this morning, was a fallout of the speech, Superintendent of Police Rajiv Ranjan said.

Owaisi’s speech, he said, violated provisions of section 144 of Crpc and an FIR has been lodged under sections 153A and 188 of IPC at Kochadhaman police station.

Section 153A deals with promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony, while section 188 deals with disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant.

The FIR has been lodged on the basis of magistrate’s report, the SP said. Owaisi had yesterday addressed an election meeting at Sontha haat village under Kochadhaman assembly constituency in Kishanganj district from where AIMIM state unit chief Akhtarul Iman is contesting.

He had allegedly used abusive language against all members of Parliament except his elder brother Asaduddin Owaisi who is AIMIM chief and an MP from Hyderabad. He also allegedly made provocative remarks against BJP leaders.

The police are probing if the damage to idols of goddess Kali in two temples in Nepalgarh locality had any connection to the speech. The SP said idols were found damaged in two adjacent temples this morning and created tension in the town and protests.

District administration sought to maintain peace by talking to people of the two communities, he added.

Movie Review: ‘Mungala’ is no doubt a very realistic & offbeat film

October 5, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Mungala

Producer: Gaurav Bhanushali
Director: Vijay Devkar
Star Cast: Lokesh Gupte, Jyoti Joshi, Suhas Palshikar, Ganesh Yadav, Chetan Dalvi etc
Genre: Drama
Verdict: AVERAGE

Plot: A village is suffering due to draught since a long time and the end to this problem is nowhere in sight. The villagers daily wait for the tanker to arrive to quench their thirst and to fulfil their other household chores. One of the youth Kisan has come to the village after being sacked due to the recession period in the city.  One of the other youth who has gone to the city dies and now his widow is left to fend for herself and her mother – in – law.  And then Kisan devises a plan with his village bumpkins to bring the village back to normalcy. And in the end all is well that ends well and Kisan too, then decides to tie the Knot with the widow.

Aces: Producer Gaurav Bhanushali along with the director Vijay Devkar deserves a standing ovation for presenting such a realistic and off beat subject especially on the Marathi celluloid silver screen. All the actors have performed their act too sincerely and honestly. A special well deserved mention must be made of Lokesh Gupte as Kisan and Jyoti Joshi as the widow.

Minuses: The only minus point of the film is its snail space. As nothing seems to be moving the way it should. In short the film is too verbose. Besides the director Vijay Devkar should have resisted the temptation of forcefully entering an item song.

Last Word: The prospects of Mungala at the box office looks grim but it will definitely succeed in doing good business in the single theatres & tent cinemas especially of the interiors. That apart the film will win rave reviews and awards galore in the festival circuit.
