Kerala Governor misses flight as pilot refuses to wait

December 23, 2015 by Nasheman

P Sathasivam

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Justice P Sathasivam failed to board an Air India flight from Kochi to the state capital after the pilot reportedly refused to wait for the dignitary and took off.

Raj Bhavan sources said the Governor reached Nedumbassery International airport about 10 minutes before the flight was to depart at 11:40 PM yesterday, but the “step ladder had been removed and the flight was pushing back”.

According to the sources, the Governor was returning to the state capital after attending a function in Kozhikode. They were informed by Air India officials that the Delhi-Kochi -Thiruvanthapuram A1048 flight will take off at 1140 PM.

The delayed flight had yesterday reached Kochi airport at 10.58 PM and was to leave by 1140 PM.

“We got a communication from the airport that the flight will take off at 11.40 PM. However, when the Governor, accompanied by his wife reached the airport at 11.28 PM to board the flight, we saw the step ladder had been removed and the flight was pushing back,” the sources told PTI.

AI officials were waiting at the ladder point with the Governor’s boarding pass. The sources said though the Air India manager had informed the pilot that the Governor was arriving, he refused to wait for him and closed the door.

When contacted, the airport sources said the Governor had reached the tarmac when the flight was at the “push back stage and the doors were closed”.

Raj Bhavan sources said they would be taking up the matter with appropriate authorities even as Air India sources said they were looking into the matter.

After an overnight stay at Kochi, the Governor reached the state capital by road this morning. Two years ago, the then Governor Nikhil Kumar had also faced a similar situation.

Rajya Sabha disrupted over Ram temple, DDCA row

December 23, 2015 by Nasheman

rajya Sabha

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha’s proceedings were briefly disrupted twice in the pre-lunch session on Wednesday over the issues of a Ram temple in Ayodhya and alleged irregularities in the DDCA.

Soon after the upper house met for the day, Janata Dal-United member K.C. Tyagi raised the issue of stones being transported and carved for constructing the proposed Ram temple at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

He said that tension is being created in Ayodhya, where the Babri mosque once stood.
“A similar situation (to what prevailed earlier) is being created in Ayodhya once again. Tension is being incited,” Tyagi said.

Members of the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress too supported him.

BSP leader Mayawati accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of trying to derive political mileage by again raking up the Ram temple issue.

“There should not be anything that is in contempt of the Supreme Court. It’s the responsibility of the Uttar Pradesh government to maintain law and order,” she said.

“Stones are being polished since 1990, and the site is around one-and-a-half km away from the disputed site. Second, both the government and the BJP firmly believe the court decision should be respected and we will respect it,” Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

“There is no restriction on carving of stones; it does not mean the Ram temple is being constructed,” he said.

However, members of the Congress and Samajwadi Party trooped near the chairman’s podium and shouted slogans against the government.

Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien adjourned the house for 10 minutes.

As the house reassembled at 11.34 a.m., Congress members again trooped near the chairman’s podium to demand the resignation of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over the Delhi and District Cricket Association issue.

Chairman Hamid Ansari requested the Congress members not to disrupt the proceeding on the last day of the winter session but his request was ignored.

He then adjourned the house till 1.00 p.m.

Kejriwal seeks Modi’s resignation, attacks Jaitley

December 22, 2015 by Nasheman

arvind-kejriwal

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation for ordering a CBI raid on his office.

Launching his fiercest attack yet on the prime minister, Kejriwal told the Delhi assembly that the CBI raided his office – notwithstanding the CBI’s denials – because it was looking for a file on the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).

“I demand Prime Minister Modi’s resignation for the fraudulent raid he ordered to save (Finance Minister) Arun Jaitley,” who had headed the DDCA for years, the Aam Aadmi Party leader said to thumping of desks by his party colleagues.

Kejriwal also asked Modi to sack Jaitley because of his involvement in the DDCA, where critics have alleged largescale financial bungling. Jaitley has claimed innocence in the entire affair.

If Jaitley was indeed innocent, he should prove this to the Commission of Inquiry set up by the Delhi government, he said.

“He should feel ashamed,” Kejriwal thundered, referring to Modi and the December 15 raid by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which has denied searching Kejriwal’s office and said that it only targeted his principal secretary Rajendra Kumar for corruption.

December 15, the chief minister said, was “a black day” for India.

Kejriwal accused Modi of constantly interfering in the functioning of the AAP government.

He said he had urged Modi to let the AAP government work without interference but “he did not agree”.

“The CBI said the chief minister was not raided… Only his principal secretary’s office was raided. If this is indeed true, why did they enter my office?” Kejriwal asked.

He said they were looking for a file on the DDCA, and alleged that despite 50 hours of interrogation spread over six days, the CBI had not been able to build a case of corruption against Rajendra Kumar. “They are mentally torturing him.”

Kejriwal poked fun at Modi for wearing a Rs.10 lakh suit last year, and demanded to know how a “chai wala” (tea seller) could afford such a costly suit.

The AAP leader denied accusations that his party had earlier advocated independence for the CBI but had now done a U turn.

“Even today we say that the CBI should be independent. And the day it becomes independent, it will not raid Rajendra Kumar… It will send a notice to Modi to ask where you got Rs.10 lakh to buy the suit.

“The CBI is not independent. Don’t fool the people.”

In historic first, SpaceX lands first reusable rocket

US space company SpaceX has successfully landed a rocket upright for the first time, a major milestone in the drive to cut costs by making rockets reusable.

The Falcon 9 rocket made a graceful arc back to Earth and touched down vertically at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Monday, minutes after launching a payload of satellites to orbit.

“The Falcon has landed,” a commentator said above the screams and cheers of people gathered at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

SpaceX, headed by the internet tycoon Elon Musk, is striving to revolutionise the rocket industry, which currently loses many millions of dollars in jettisoned machinery and sophisticated rocket components after each launch.

“I still can’t quite believe it,” Musk said in a teleconference after the landing. “I think this is a revolutionary moment. No one has ever brought an orbital-class booster back intact.”

Previous attempts to land the Falcon 9’s first stage on a floating ocean platform had failed – with the rocket either colliding with the autonomous drone ship or tipping over.

But this time, video images on SpaceX’s live webcast showed the tall, white portion of the rocket – known as the first stage – appearing to settle down firmly and stick to the landing.

The rocket reached a height of 200 kilometres before heading back to Earth and touching down at a former US Air Force rocket and missile-testing range that was last used in 1978.

Video images were cut off within seconds of the landing, and the SpaceX live webcast returned to its commentators, who described the successful deployment of the rocket’s payload of 11 satellites for ORBCOMM, a global communications company.

The US space agency NASA applauded the feat.

Congratulations @SpaceX on your successful vertical landing of the first stage back on Earth! https://t.co/Zw3LR8fPTI

— NASA (@NASA) December 22, 2015

High stakes

The stakes were high for SpaceX, which has a $1.6bn contract with NASA to supply the astronauts living at the International Space Station over numerous back-and-forth trips with its Dragon cargo ship.

Only six months ago, a devastating explosion – caused by a faulty strut – destroyed the Falcon 9 about two minutes after launch, along with hundreds of millions of dollars in cargo and equipment bound for the space station.

The company fixed that problem and made the newest version of the Falcon 9 about 30 percent more powerful than previous iterations, Musk said.

Adding to the competitive nature of the commercial space industry, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s rocket company Blue Origin announced last month that it had successfully landed its New Shepard rocket after a suborbital flight.

Congrats @SpaceX on landing Falcon’s suborbital booster stage. Welcome to the club!

— Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) December 22, 2015

Analysts have pointed out that although New Shepard was first, SpaceX’s feat would be harder to accomplish because the Falcon 9 flies higher in altitude.

“Because SpaceX’s vehicle was designed to place a constellation of satellites in orbit, the Falcon 9’s first stage flew at significantly greater speeds and more than double the altitude of what New Shepherd reached last month,” the Commercial Spaceflight Federation said in a statement.

It called the landing an “incredible achievement” in an industry that is seeking to drive down costs and make spaceflight cheaper and more accessible to tourists and adventurers.

TN floods: CM seeks Rs 25,912 crore for restoration work

December 22, 2015 by Nasheman

chennai-floods

Chennai: With the unprecedented deluge leaving a trail of destruction and devastation in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today sought Central assistance of Rs 25,912 crore towards restoration, saying it was ‘difficult’ for state Government to meet the costs, especially after suffering ‘huge loss’ of Central tax devolution.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said her government was committed to rebuilding infrastructure and reducing the distress caused to people due to floods by providing ‘gratuitous relief’ for affected families.

“These costs are very large and it is very difficult for the Government of Tamil Nadu to meet the cost, particularly after the huge loss of Central tax devolution and transfers suffered by the state consequent on the 14th Finance Commission’s recommendations,” she said.

The CM recalled that her government had earlier submitted a memorandum totalling the losses suffered at Rs 8,481 crore in November, following which a Central team had also visited Tamil Nadu to make on-spot assessment.

However, the “fourth and most severe spell” of rainfall was received after the team’s visit, she said, referring to the heavy downpour on December 1,which resulted in severe flooding of Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts even as Cuddalore had also been affected.

“We have now prepared the supplementary memorandum which reflects damages caused during the fourth spell of rainfall and the consequent floods in the first week of December 2015.

Tamil Nadu immediately needs an additional sum of Rs 17,431.51 crore for temporary and permanent restoration,” she said.

With the government now preparing a supplementary memorandum the state will need a total sum of Rs 25,912.45 crore, including the earlier Rs 8,481 crore, for relief and restoration efforts, she told Modi.

“I request you to kindly instruct the Ministry of Home Affairs and the other concerned Ministries to expeditiously consider our two memoranda for assistance on account of flood damages and devastation and release the necessary funds at the earliest to meet the state government’s requirement of Rs 25,912.45 crore,” she urged Modi.

Referring to her plea for an immediate release of Rs 2,000 crore made with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley here on Sunday “to sustain the vigour of restoration operations”, she urged the Prime Minister to instruct the Finance Ministry to expedite its release.

Movie Review: ‘Dilwale’ is a perfect family entertainer

December 22, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Dilwale

Banner: Red Chillies Entertainment & Rohit Shetty Productions
Producer: Gauri Khan
Director: Rohit Shetty
Star Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Varun Sharma, Boman Irani, Vinod Khanna, Kabir Bedi, Chetna Pande, Johny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Mukesh Tripathi, Pankaj Tripathi, Nawab Khan & Shawar Ali
Music: Amar Mohile, Amitabh Bhattacharya & Pritam Chakraborty

The car modifier nay the car smasher director Rohit Shetty, after modifying Chennai Express also is now back with a big bang with his latest offering Dilwale. Audiences knows Rohit Shetty’s historic obsession with cars and smashing them to bits & pieces on their way to a junkyard. So much so that this time he has put SRK, in Dilwale, in his own real life role of a car modifier, but thankfully not a car smasher, who also mends everyone’s heart except his own broken heart. And this time the hit machine director Rohit Shetty has once again ganged up with SRK to deliver one more runaway hit.

This time around the scripted formulaic funda of Dilwale showcases Raj aka Kaali (Shah Rukh Khan), a don from Bulgaria, who now leads a changed life of a car modifier in Goa. His world revolves around his brother Veer (Varun Dhawan). Veer falls in love with Ishita (Kriti Sanon), who happens to be Meera’s (Kajol) sister. Raj & Meera’s paths had collided in the past, as lovers who ultimately break up & migrate from Bulgaria and unknowingly land up in Goa, and that becomes an obstacle for Veer & Ishita.

Rohit Shetty has worked up his magic wand this time around too. One again his directorial showpiece Dilwale may not be critics delight but the audiences of single theatres as well as multiplexes are simply going to lap it up. As in Dilwale Rohit has packed, to the brim, all the requisite commercial ingredients in ample doses. So its time to leave your brains behind, a la David Dhawan movies, and just freak out on the enjoyable entertainment recipe dished out by the Dilwale team. Rohit Shetty focuses on the love story yet again with SRK – Kajol & Varun Dhawan – Kriti Sanon, interspersed with comic elements with the combination of Varun Dhawan – Varun Sharma – Boman Irani – Johny Lever – Sanjay Mishra – Mukesh Tripathi – Pankaj Tripathi, and high -octane action drama perpetrated by none other than Vinod Khanna – Kabir Bedi – Nawab Khan -Shawar Ali. And the technical crew comprising of, Yunus Sajawal (Screenplay), Farhad – Sajid (Dialogues), Amar Mohile, Amitabh Bhattacharya & Pritam Chakraborty (Music – special gems being already popular numbers like “Gerua”, “Manma Emotion Jaage Re”, “Janam Janam” & “Tukur Tukur” which appears in the rolling credits in “The End”, Dudley (Cinematographer – The beautiful locales of Bulgaria & even the Goan ones have proved to be the real visual treats for the eyes), are excellently outstanding. One last thing the editing could have been more sharper & crisper.

Performance wise the film clearly belongs to Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol who have teamed up on the celluloid silver screen after a hiatus of half a decade, they were last seen together in My Name Is Khan. Indeed their charming aura is still intact and of course their on screen chemistry is one of the highlights of the movie Dilwale. And of course the devils must get their own share of due credit as both SRK & Kajol have delivered the niche oriented par excellence act as the young as well as the matured lovers whose love story collides in 2 different time zones. Varun Dhawan is outstanding in his overall act of romance, comedy & action. Varun Sharma is 1st rate in his out & out comic role as Varun Dhawan’s friend. He is a welcome addition to the rooster of established comedians. That
apart a standing ovation also goes to the most talented supporting actors in the cast like Sanjay Mishra, Johny Lever, Mukesh Tiwari, Pankaj Tripathi & above all Boman Irani, Vinod Khannna & Kabir Bedi.

Tail Piece: So guys Dilwale is a perfect entertainer for your entire family & friends and especially for Generation X too.

McCullum to bid adieu to international cricket in Feb

December 22, 2015 by Nasheman

brendon-mccullum

Christchurch: New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum today announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket after the home two-Test series against Australia in February.

The 34-year-old batsman will feature in his world-record 100th successive Test since debut at the Basin Reserve on February 12 and will quit after the second Test at Hagley Oval from February 20.

With McCullum retiring, 25-year old batsman Kane Williamson, who has become the top-ranked Test batsman, will captain the New Zealand team during the World Twenty20 in India to be held from March 8 to April 3.

McCullum said he wanted to make the announcement later but he was compelled to share it now as New Zealand will soon name its team for the World T20.

“Ideally, I would have preferred to wait until after the Test in Christchurch to make this news public. However, the schedule for naming the ICC World T20 squads means I couldn’t have managed this without causing a lot of confusion and speculation, something I was keen to avoid,” said McCullum, a day after his team won the Test series against Sri Lanka 2-0.

“I’ve loved my opportunity to play for and captain the Black Caps but all good things have to come to an end, and I’m just grateful for the wonderful experience of playing for my country,” added the swashbuckling batsman, who became the first New Zealander ever to reach the triple ton milestone against India in Wellington last year.

McCullum, who shares the world record of 100 Test sixes with Australian Adam Gilchrist and also holds the record for the most Twenty20 sixes, said he doesn’t want to dwell on his achievements now and wants to focus all his energy on the upcoming tournaments.

“There’s a time and place for reflection and that’s at the end of your career. For now, I’ll be giving all my attention to helping the team focus on what’s coming up over the next few weeks — and making sure we’re in the best possible shape for what’s going to be a very challenging summer,” he said.

McCullum, who made his international debut against Australia in 2002 and played his first Test against South Africa two years later, scored 6,273 runs, including 11 centuries, in his 99 Tests. He also played 254 ODIs, scoring 5,909 runs with five hundreds.

Cocktail Circuit Round up

December 22, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Shasan-2015

Producer Shekhar Pathak had recently held a Cocktail Dinner Bash in Hotel Citylight in Mahim (W) Mumbai to announce the release date of his most awaited multistarrer Marathi movie namely Shreya Films Pvt Ltd’s Shashan. It has been directed by Gajendra Ahire, who could not make it to the function as he had to rush out of town to attend an award ceremony in which he was one of the awardee.

The bash of Shashan was one of the best that has been organised recently and certainly not the overcrowded affair that filmy bashes are certainly synonymous with. Right at the outset Producer Shekhar Pathak took to the dais and averred, “Basically I am hailing from a theatre background having acted in many plays. And one fine day I thought of making a film and I thought why not make a Marathi film. So I got myself associated with the movie Shashan, albeit a little late in the day. But I am now most happy & contented producer as Shashan is now complete & ready to hit the celluloid silver screen. I am really happy to be a part of this multistarrer Marathi movie starring such stalwarts & erstwhile actors like Makarand Anaspure, Jitendra Joshi, Bharat Jadhav, Siddharth Jadhav, Manava Naik, Aditi Bhagwat, Wrinda Gajendra, Vikram Gajendra, Kiran Karmakar, Mohan Joshi Vinay Apte, Sudhir Dalvi, Nagesh Bhosale, Milind Shinde, Anjali Walsangkar, Amey Dhare, Ravindra Berde, Javarkar & above all Dr. Sreeram Lagoo.”

Shekhar Pathak continued further by adding a few more nuggets of Marathi movie Shashan, “All the artistes of Shashan are eminent names of the Marathi film industry, you name it and they are there. It was a sheer pleasure to work with all of them. And a special thanks to Dr. Shreeram Lagoo for being amidst us, if only for a day’s cameo. In fact none of the actors mentioned above has a full – fledged running role but everyone has a meaningful role which they have performed brilliantly without any grudge or grouse. In fact Shashan doesn’t offer you any story as such but it just mirrors the political scenario of the present times. what more can I say? But do make it a point to see Shashan when it releases on the 15th of January, 2016. As right now I am just keeping my heart, my fingers & my toes crossed so that Shashan succeeds beyond imagination in entertaining the urban as well as the rural audiences all over. One last word Shashan has been produced under the banner of Shreya Films Pvt Ltd, a banner that has been named after my daughter Shreya. Period!!!”

BSF aircraft crashes near Delhi airport, all 10 on board killed

December 22, 2015 by Nasheman

BSF

New Delhi: All the 10 people on board a small Ranchi-bound BSF plane carrying technical personnel were killed when it crashed near Dwarka today and burst into flames just outside the IGI airport here shortly after take-off.

Aviation sources said the accident happened at around 9.50 am when the twin-engine Superking plane crashed into the airport boundary wall near a railway track and landed in a sewage treatment plant while returning back apparently due to a technical problem five minutes after it took off for Ranchi.

The aircraft lost contact with the Air Traffic Control, at 9.50 am, they said. “It is unfortunate that all 10 people including the pilots have died in the crash,” Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma said. There were two pilots on board.

“It is a matter of probe what led to the crash. We can only tell after the inquiry what were the reasons or lapses resulted in this incident,” he added.

BSF sources said the technicians were on their way to Ranchi to repair a helicopter.
The DG-level talks between India and Bangladesh scheduled today in Dhaka have been cancelled in the wake of the crash, according to BSF sources.

Police said six bodies have been recovered from the crash site. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the crash. “Pained by the loss of lives in the BSF plane crash in Delhi. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased,” he said.

Eyewitnesses said the plane hit a wall outside the technical area of the airport before bursting into flames and then crashed into a water body.

“We saw a plane spiralling down which crashed near the wall where work was going on. I could sport one body. A labourer who was working was also injured,” an eye witness Suraj said.

The area was engulfed in dense smoke and fire with pieces of aircraft spread around.
Delhi Fire Service chief A K Sharma said 15 tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames.

An inquiry has been ordered by the Civil Aviation Ministry. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh briefed the Prime Minister about the crash and rushed to the crash site.

The 10 on board the ill-fated aircraft comprised the pilot, who was a second-in-command rank officer of SIB, the co-pilot, who is a Deputy Commandent, six technicians, one engineer and one crew member.

Civil Aviation Secretary R N Choubey said authorities were in the process of setting up a Committee of Inquiry to probe the mishap.

“We are trying to identify a pilot who has flown the type of aircraft that has crashed,” he said.

Karimnagar: In a frenzied sword attack, a 28-year-old software engineer today left 22 people including his parents and three constables injured before being fatally shot by police.

The attacker’s parents and an auto driver are in a critical condition. The policemen, who suffered serious injuries as they tried to stop him, and the other wounded were also undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

According to Karimnagar Deputy Superintendent of Police J Rama Rao, the trouble began at 7 AM after Balvinder Singh alias Babloo (28), of Laxmi Nagar locality in Karimnagar town, entered into an altercation with his parents –Amruth Singh and Baby Kaur–and allegedly attacked them with a sword.

Leaving his parents lying unconscious in a pool of blood, Balvinder ran out of his house wielding the sword and began randomly attacking passers-by and people on the road, police alleged.

It was a scary scene as an auto-driver and a dozen other victims were bleeding profusely, eyewitnesses said.

As the police patrol team reached the spot, Balvinder attacked three constables and wounded them seriously.

Subsequently, police opened fire.

Balvinder was then taken into custody and shifted to Government District Head Quarters hospital here, where he died within three hours of being admitted, hospital sources said.

Balvinder was working in a company in Bangalore.

His parents and the injured auto driver Narayana, also admitted in the same hospital, are said to be in a critical condition.

Further investigations are underway, the DSP said.
