Let veterans prove OROP stir is not politically motivated: Parrikar

November 13, 2015 by Nasheman

manohar parrikar

Arakkonam: Terming the attempts by war veterans to burn medals as an insult to the nation and armed forces, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said it was for protesting ex-service personnel to prove there was no political motive behind the OROP stir.

“If I say something, it will become an allegation. Let them prove that it is not political,” he told reporters here when asked if he saw a political link to continuing agitation despite the government’s response and notification on one rank, one pension (OROP) scheme.

“Medals are a recognition of the nation for the sacrifice done by the armed forces,” he said in reply to another query.

“Burning and returning them is an insult to the nation and the defence forces,” Parrikar said.

The minister’s comments come in the wake of a section of the ex-service personnel expressing dissatisfaction on the ground that the OROP notification has not fully met their demands.

The government had on Saturday formally notified the OROP scheme for over 24 lakh ex-servicemen and six lakh war widows in the country.

“Medals are a recognition of bravery, for the service to the nation. It has nothing to do with service conditions whereas OROP is about service conditions. It does not say you are entitled for medals, it talks about service conditions like your pay and entitlement,” Parrikar said.

On the issue of grievances of protesting ex-servicemen, he said, “Let them put the demands before the judicial committee, they will address it.” He said implementing OROP was BJP’s electoral promise and it had been fulfilled.

Earlier, he unveiled the first phase of the commissioning of Boeing P8i Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft fleet at Naval Air Station “INS Rajali” here, about 85 kms from Chennai. In the next phase, four more such aircraft would be inducted making it a fleet of 12 high-tech surveillance planes.

Induction of the eighth P8i plane and completion of aircraft equipment testing, trials and crew training for all the eight aircraft marked the launch of the first phase.

The function was attended by the top defence brass, including Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan, Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command and other senior officials from the navy as well as civil administration.

VHP, Bajrang Dal are trying to disrupt peace in state: CM Siddaramaiah

November 13, 2015 by Nasheman

siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah slammed Hindutva groups here on Friday, November 13 and said, “VHP and Bajrang Dal are trying to disrupt peace in the state.” CM slammed opposition parties and said that they have resorted to disturb social harmony in the state under the guise of religion. Hidden animosity within them is spreading hatred among the people, he said.

“We decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanthi to announce that we all are one”, he added. His comment comes in the wake of the recent bandh call and violence across the state by pro-Hindu groups against Tipu birth anniversary.

Normal life has been paralysed due to the bandh call by right wing groups over Madikeri clashes in protest against celebrating the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan. The bandh call given across the state turned violent and miscreants pelted stones at private and government buses in Puttur and Surathkal of Dakshina Kannada district.

VHP groups protested in front of Town hall in Bengaluru on Friday, condemning Madikeri violence. Security has been tightened in sensitive areas across the state.

Meanwhile, Home Minister G Parameshwara held a meeting with top police officials and reviewed law and order situation following the Tipu row.

The Chief Minister has ordered a magisterial probe into the Madikeri clashes and Deputy Commissioner C Shikha will lead the probe, it has been reported.

BJP MP Venkaiah Naidu, speaking on the recent Tipu row said, “Both good and bad opinions have been prevailing on Tipu Sultan. I won’t comment on local issues as a central minister,” he said.

Former Prime Minister and JD (S) supremo Deve Gowda, while commenting on the violence said that the state government’s decision to celebrate Tipu’s anniversary was wrong and that this has led to communal clashes. Earlier, Muthalik’s speech had led to violence in Hassan, he said.

The state government’s decision to hold Tipu’s birth anniversary celebrations across the state has sparked several protests by the BJP and right-wing groups. The protests turned violent in Madikeri on the day of the celebration and the unrest has been extended to Dakshina Kannada district as well. Agitating over the death of a VHP leader in Madikeri on November 10 and the murder of a youth at BC Road on November 12, the district unit of Bajrang Dal and VHP have called for dawn-to-dusk bandh on Friday, November 13. However, it received mixed response in few parts of the state as several buses were running and shops were kept open.

Modi is embarrassing India: Congress

November 13, 2015 by Nasheman

Anand Sharma

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is embarrassing India by repeatedly saying in foreign capitals that the country enjoyed no credibility till he came to power, the Congress said on Friday.

“We completely reject his claim that he has restored India’s credibility,” Congress leader Anand Sharma told a news conference here, on the second day of Modi’s visit to Britain.

He said Modi’s claim implied that India had no credibility earlier and the world did not respect India before Modi took power in May 2014.

“By repeating this thing over and over again in capitals that he visits, he is embarrassing the country.

“India had respect, India had credibility and India was one of the most favoured destinations for FDI because of government policies” even earlier, Sharma said.

The Congress leader alleged that there was an atmosphere of fear in India today, and the whole blame for this lay on the prime minister.

“The PM presides over a government which is arbitrary in functioning. The PM is authoritarian when it comes to the conduct of the affairs of the state.

“It is his government which has sullied India’s image as a favoured destination because of forces which have been unleashed and which have been given protection and endorsement by Modi,” Sharma said.

Rape cases in India more than double in 2001-14

November 13, 2015 by Nasheman

rape-protest

Thiruvananthapuram: India has witnessed a surge in rape cases, with their number increasing more than double from 2001 to 2014, said a report released here on Friday.

The findings are part of the much-awaited report on the ‘Status of Women in India’, released at the International Conference on Gender Equality at Kovalam.

The rape cases registered between 2001 and 2014 rose from 16,075 to 36,735.

Cases of cruelty against married woman too witnessed a rise, going up from 49,170 to 122,877.

“…’home’ is the first sanctuary of violence against women in the form of incest and early marriage,” said Pam Rajput, chairperson of a High-Level Committee (HLC) on the Status of Women in India.

Quoting the findings on Thursday at the inaugural day of the International Conference on Gender Equality-1 (ICGE-1) three-day conclave, Rajput said this report was an attempt to recommend policy interventions based on contemporary assessment of women’s economic, legal, political, education, health and socio-cultural needs.

The report notes that globally India ranks second-last (141 out of 142 countries) in health.

It was 40 years ago, on the eve of the foremost UN world conference of women, that the first report on the Status of women in India was submitted.

Rajput said India had one of the worst gender gaps in the world workforce participation with only 25 percent (15 percent in urban areas and the rest in rural areas).

“This can be revised only by integrating macroeconomic policy with social policy and examining the situation of underpaid women working in public services as voluntary or social workers,” said Rajput.

“Despite the economic growth and the increase in the level of education, women find it very difficult to make free choices,” said Rajput, who recalled that it was in Thiruvananthapuram while attending a conference of the National Federation of Indian Women in 1980 that she chanced upon a booklet that gave comprehensive statistics on women, inspiring her to dive headfirst into women’s studies.

The committee believes that gender architecture needs to be revisited and that there should be separate budgets for women and children.

Tipu controversy: BJP demands Siddaramaiah’s ouster, takes swipe at Sonia

November 12, 2015 by Nasheman

siddaramaiah

New Delhi: BJP today demanded the Karnataka chief minister’s resignation following death of two persons in violence over Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary celebrations, and took a swipe at Congress chief Sonia Gandhi asking if she will now lead a march and seek Siddaramaiah’s ouster.

BJP said Siddaramaiah was unable to handle the law and order situation, and sought a probe into the death threats made against playwright Girish Karnad and its MP Prathap Simha. It also expressed concern that no arrest has been made in the murder of rationalist M M Kalburgi.

“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah must resign. Two persons have died and he has not been able to handle the law and order situation. Will Sonia Gandhi go to Bengaluru and march against this? Will she demand Siddaramaiah’s resignation?” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters.

Gandhi had on November 3 taken to the streets and led a march of its top leaders to Rashtrapati Bhavan to protest against the climate of growing intolerance in the country and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “endorsing” incidents of hate.

Referring to the alleged death threats received by Jnanpith awardee Karnad and BJP MP Simha on social media, the party sought a probe into it.

Karnad, who came under severe attack for his remarks that Bengaluru international airport should have been named after Tipu Sultan rather than the city’s founder, Kempe Gowda, received a threat on Twitter that he would meet with the same fate as rationalist M M Kalburgi, who was gunned down recently by two men at his residence in Dharwad in north Karnataka.

Karnad, though, later apologised, saying he did not want to hurt people’s feelings.

Meanwhile, Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu pooh-poohed suggestions that the Bengaluru airport should have been named after 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan and not city’s founder Kempe Gowda.

“Decision has been made to name Bangalore airport after him. Public has also welcomed this decision. Now taking up again the same issue and suggesting different names do not have any meaning. There is no point in discussing now after the airport has been named after a great person who was instrumental creating Bangalore city.

“Secondly, the government (Karnataka) before taking any steps should keep in mind the public sentiment. Thirdly, no body should add fuel to the fire,” Naidu told reporters.

“NH10 was the turning point in my career:” Navdeep Singh

November 12, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Navdeep Singh

Navdeep Singh had gained instant recognition & glory when he had yielded the megaphone for actress Aushka Sharma’s ‘NH10’, and this was almost after 8 years of lying low after his debut directorial venture ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’. Here in this exclusive interview Editor Ravi Kumar of Film & TV Trade preview, Navdeep Singh speaks about his more than a decade long directorial journey.

You are hailing from an army background. So what made you to choose your career in the film industry?

After completing my education in US & UK and also dabbling with the making of a few commercials side by side out there I had come to India and joined the army but from day one I was itching to do something creative. Over here, I mean in the Army Club’s cantonment arena they used to show us the VHS of Hindi & English films. And so I slowly got drifted into the realms of the magic of Bollywood movies.

Did you face any objections from your family, when you decided to opt for a career in the film industry?

None whatsoever as I had already tried my hands at making commercials in UK & US I decided to follow my passion in India too. So when I reached the Indian shores I instantly decided to make commercials and I ended up doing the commercials of branded products like Lakme, Maruti, Garnier et al.

So your real claim to fame has been in the arena of the commercials & the music videos. Tell us something about your past work!

As said earlier I made commercials and the making of music videos came much later. On the flip side I also started making enough grounds for making my debut Hindi film. Besides I have already told you about the branded commercials I had done.

When did you decide to direct a Hindi feature film?

I had come to Mumbai in the year 2001. Then I took some time to establish myself by making commercials & music videos. And then I planned the making of my debut feature film in Hindi. No doubt it was an offbeat film named ‘Manorma Six Feet Under’. I had initially planned to make ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’ with Irfan Khan, but the initial producer who had come on board jus backed out at the last moment. And since the project was getting delayed day by day Irfan khan too started becoming busy and he too opted out. But finally ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’ hit the celluloid silver screen in the year 2006.

You directed ‘NH10’ after a gap of 8 years. What was the reason behind it?

You see it so happened that ‘Manorama Six Feet Under bagged a lot of critical appreciation but could not hit the bull’s eye at box office. I did have to make serious efforts to bag my 2nd project. And then when I landed up the project named ‘NH10’ its pre – production planning took a lot of time and finally it went on the floors.

How did you plan ‘NH10’?

After the initial pre – production planning like getting the script and stars on board which also included the rece of the locales on the National Highway 10 which also included seeking of the requisite Governmental permissions to shoot. And since it was the debut project for Anushka as a producer we all were trying to make extra efforts for its success both artistically & commercially.

’NH10’ was a perfect balance of realistic & commercial cinema, touching the subject of honour killing in a very different way. Have you done any effort to make the film commercially viable?

No we did not take any effort in this direction. We had landed up a good subject for ‘NH10’ so we tried to present the theme as realistically as possible. We did not temper with it nor did we try to decorate it with the usual commercial trappings of songs, dances and the usual masala entertainment. It was a story based on the true events. With no lecture baazi and it was not even preachy. A simple story told simply, of course retaining the hardcore gruesomeness as far as possible.

How was it working with Anushka Sharma?

It was a pleasure working with her. I would say that she is a fantastic actress. Not only these, she is equally sincere & dedicated actress. The film was shot mostly in night shift but never once did she complain and above all she is a wonderful producer never even once asking how the film is shaping up. There were no objections or obstacles whatsoever raised from her side. It was a smooth sailing all the way.

It is heard that members of censor board wanted a ban on ‘NH10’. Why?

Yes initially they did raise an objection stating that the film was too crude, violent & gruesome. But ultimately I convinced them by saying that it was nothing as compared to what happens in real life. And it will hardly inspire anyone to connect with such crimes. In fact it will prove to be very repulsive for them to hate such crimes.

Is thriller your favourite genre?

Yes you can say that as I enjoy making films of this genre.

If a director gives a flop in Hindi film industry, producers are generally afraid to sign his / her next project. What are your comments on it?

It’s true. Tell me why they would take risk on such flop directors. But one fine day such directors too, get a 2nd time to prove their directorial prowess but it takes a lot of convincing powers to make them to back your project. Directors do find someone who can put their belief in them.

In Hindi industry, cinema with stars is preferred more than the cinema of content. What are your comments on it?

Yes I think so and I totally agree with you. But of late content driven films are proving to be a lot more successful.

Are you looking forward to work with any big star?

Yes of course If they come forward and believe in my kind of cinema. Or else I am happy with my content driven films starring mini stars or debutante actors.

So what is next on your directorial cards?

A lot more which I can’t reveal at this stage. Suffice it to say that concrete & productive talks are going on with 2 to 3 producers.

Saudi-led coalition ‘deliberately’ targeting hospitals in Yemen: ICRC

November 12, 2015 by Nasheman

With a stockpile of Western arms, the Saudi siege of Yemen has hit nearly 100 healthcare facilities in war-torn country since March

The Saudi Arabia-led coalition in Yemen has repeatedly targeted and attacked hospitals and clinics, an appalling trend that “disrespects the neutrality of health facilities” in war, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Tuesday.

The U.S.-backed coalition has bombed nearly 100 hospitals throughout Yemen since March, with the most recent airstrike hitting a clinic on Sunday in the southern city of Taiz—one the country’s most populous regions, which has been under heavy fire for months. The shelling of Al-Thawra hospital in the south came just weeks after a Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) clinic was hit in Haydan, in the north.

“Al-Thawra hospital, one of the main health care facilities in Taiz which is providing treatment for about 50 injured people every day was reportedly shelled several times on Sunday. The shelling endangered the lives of patients and staff on site,” Kedir Awol Omar, the deputy head of the ICRC delegation in Yemen, said on Tuesday. “The neutrality of healthcare facilities and staff is not being respected. Health facilities are deliberately attacked and surgical and medical supplies are also being blocked from reaching hospitals in areas under siege.”

Airstrikes on medical clinics are “a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law,” ICRC said.

MSF also said on Tuesday that it has been unable to deliver essential medical aid to two hospitals stationed in a particular volatile corner of Taiz, where almost half of health facilities face an influx of wounded patients along with a scarcity in supplies.

“A large part of the population of Taiz is displaced within the city,” said Karline Kleijer, MSF’s emergency manager for Yemen. “They are battling for their survival on a daily basis, and fighting to get hold of sufficient food and water, due to the steep cost of basic necessities and the prevailing insecurity.”

“The situation in Taiz is dramatic and will only get worse in the coming weeks if no efforts are made to spare civilians from the violence and allow them to access basic services, including health facilities,” Kleijer said.

Saudi officials have not responded to the most recent bombing, but they denied being aware that the October airstrikes in Haydan had targeted a clinic.

“Saudi authorities are denying the evident truth of having destroyed a hospital,” said Laurent Sury, head of MSF emergency operations. “This is an alarming sign for the Yemeni people and for those trying to assist them. How are we to draw lessons from what happened when all we face are denials? How can we continue to work without any form of commitment that civilian structures will be spared?”

Amnesty International in October demanded an independent investigation of the bombing in Haydan, which it said could amount to a war crime. Further, the humanitarian aid group noted that while the planes that dropped the shells were Saudi, the bombs themselves were American.

“The USA and other states exporting weapons to any of the parties to the Yemen conflict have a responsibility to ensure that the arms transfers they authorize are not facilitating serious violations of international humanitarian law,” said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty’s senior crisis response adviser. “Lack of accountability has contributed to the worsening crisis and unless perpetrators believe they will be brought to justice for their crimes, civilians will continue to suffer the consequences.”

“The world’s indifference to the suffering of Yemeni civilians in this conflict is shocking,” Rovera said.

Meanwhile, MSF’s Kleijer on Sunday published testimony from her most recent visit to Taiz, describing the devastating impacts of the siege by warring factions and the unrelenting intervention of military forces.

“A lot of airstrikes happen at night,” Kleijer wrote. “Lying in your bed, you hear the planes circling above the city, then you hear the whistle of a bomb falling, and then you brace yourself for the impact. You hope it’s not your building that going to be hit. And then it hits another building, not your house, so as well as being frightened, you’re also relieved.”

“The noise of the airstrikes is so loud and intense that you can actually feel it in your bones,” Kleijer wrote. “This is what people have been going through every night, for months on end…everything is touched by the war: the children have a game called ‘One two three airstrike’ in which they all fling themselves to the ground.”

Bengaluru: Woman raped in Cubbon Park; two security guards held

November 12, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Bengaluru: A 35-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two security guards at Cubbon Park here last night, police said today.

Police said they have arrested both the security guards in connection with the incident.

The woman hailing from Tumkuru had come to the city to take membership in a tennis club functioning at the sprawling Cubbon Park when the incident occurred, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sandeep Patil said “The incident came to light when an Assistant Sub-Inspector who was on rounds noticed the woman sitting near Siddalingaiah Circle around 2.30 AM and questioned her.”

He said, “Immediately she was brought to the Cubbon Park Police Station and a detailed statement taken from her.”

The woman had come to the club late afternoon. Though some workers told her there was none in the club and asked her to come today, she decided to stay back near by.

At about 9:30 PM noticing her alone in the park two security guards approached her, the DCP said.

When she asked them to help her make her exit from the park as she did not know the way, the guards under the pretext of helping her had taken her to a secluded place and allegedly raped her.

Patil said, “A case has been registered last night. Guards have been detained, detailed investigation is going on and medical examination of victim and two accused is also being done.”

He said a case has been booked under Indian Penal Code section 376 (punishment for rape).
