Fortis Hospitals initiates ‘Clean Hands Save Lives’ campaign

October 21, 2015 by Nasheman

Fortis Hospital

Bengaluru: Fortis Hospitals initiated the “Clean Hands Save Lives” campaign as part of their Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) to motivate people to improve their hand-washing habits to enhance their quality of life.

As a part of the “initiative, hand hygiene classes were held at The South School, JP Nagar, and Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta road where about 400 school children and walk-in patients were actively trained on hand hygiene as a part of the campaign.

The students were briefed on the importance of washing their hands with soap at regular intervals and specifically before and after eating food. A concise audio visual presentation explaining the different steps and methods to wash hands was also screened specially for the children at the event. Authorities from Fortis spoke to the children on the benefits of maintaining hygiene of hands.

It is estimated that washing hands with soap and water could reduce diarrheal disease-associated deaths by up to 50%. A large percentage of foodborne disease outbreaks are spread by contaminated hands. Appropriate hand washing practices can reduce the risk of foodborne illness and other infections and save many lives. Hand washing can reduce the risk of respiratory infections by 16%.

PM, RSS, BJP practising politics of crushing the weak: Rahul Gandhi

October 21, 2015 by Nasheman

rahul gandhi

Faridabad: Visiting the Dalit family which lost two children yesterday in an attack by upper caste men here, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi accused the Prime Minister, Harayana Chief Minister, the BJP and RSS of practicing “politics of crushing” those who are weak which results in such incidents.

“This is an attitude shared by the Prime Minister, Chief Minister of the state and the entire BJP and RSS. The attitude is if somebody is weak, he can be crushed. What you have seen is the result of this attitude,” Gandhi said.

He was meeting the family of the victims and villagers who had gathered here. Two children died when their house was set afire allegedly by a crowd of upper caste men in the wee hours yesterday.

“In Haryana, there is no government for the poor and poor people are being targeted here which is totally wrong. I have assured the victims’ family that I would do whatever they want from me including pressuring the government.

Asked whether he was doing politics over the incident, Rahul angrily retorted: “This is insulting when someone says it when someone comes here. It is not insulting to me. It is insulting to these people. What is a photo op. What you mean? People are dying. I will keep coming to such places.”

Dalits including children today blocked the Faridabad highway demanding stringent action against the guilty.

Two children of a Dalit family were burnt alive and their parents suffered injuries allegedly after some persons from upper caste set their house afire at Sunped village near Ballabhgarh while they were sleeping.

11 persons, including a father-son duo, have been booked on murder, rioting and other charges, a police spokesman said.

Vaibhav, who was two-and-a-half years old, and his sister, 11-month-old Divya, died after the attackers allegedly poured petrol from the window and set the house ablaze. A religious programme was being held nearby in the village at that time.

Their mother Rekha, 28, suffered serious burns and has been referred to Delhi for treatment, while their father Jitender, 31, too suffered injuries trying to save his family.

After visiting the victims’ family members at Sunped village, Gandhi also met agitating villagers, a majority of them women, who had blocked the Ballabhgarh-Faridabad highway to protest against the incident.

Charging that atrocities against “Dalits and weaker sections” were rising, Congress leader Kumari Selja said that her party “will raise this issue strongly, be it in Parliament and on the streets”.

Chandigarh: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday announced cancellation of the sixth edition of the World Kabaddi Cup scheduled to be held in the state from November 14 to 28, in the wake of incidents of sacrilege and protests over them in the state.

Announcing this here, the Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the sports portfolio, said he had taken the emergent decision to cancel the Kabaddi Cup in the wake of the recent incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.

“Kabaddi symbolises the spirit of the Punjabis and their quest for excellence in rural sports. At a time when the entire Sikh community is shell-shocked with grief at the ghastly manner in which Guru Granth Sahib has been desecrated, holding such a tournament is not appropriate,” he said.

Sukhbir said the feelings of the entire Punjabi community had been outraged after the “ghastly incidents of sacrilege”.

“My feelings too have been outraged and my conscience is not allowing me to preside over a tournament at a time when the Sikh community in India and all over the world is in grief over the ghastly acts of sacrilege,” he said.

A series of incidents of desecration of the Sikh holy book followed by protests by religious orgainsations, including hardliners, has put Punjab on boil recently.

Cash reward for Maharashtra, Karnataka police teams for nabbing accused in SI murder

October 20, 2015 by Nasheman

SI Jagadish

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today announced a cash award of Rs 5 lakh each for Maharashtra and the state police complimenting them on the arrest of two persons in connection with the murder of Sub-Inspector S Jagdish.

Nagpur police in coordination with Karnataka police had yesterday arrested two persons from Andhra Pradesh Express train, on a tip off that they were trying to flee to Delhi.

Congratulating the Police, Siddaramaiah said police had kept watch on the movements of the culprits from the very first day.

Asserting that law and order situation in the state was “good”, he reiterated that the state government will provide compensation to Jagadish’s family at the earliest.

Jagdish (34) was stabbed to death on October 16 allegedly by burglars whom he was chasing at Nelamangala town in Bengaluru Rural district.

The incident happened when Jagdish, attached to Doddaballapur police station, along with four other constables had gone to Nelamangala town to catch two burglars involved in various crimes including motorcycle thefts.

Chicago Police ‘disappeared’ over 7,000 people to secret interrogation facility

Nearly 6,000 of those secretly imprisoned and interrogated at secret interrogation facility were black

by Nadia Prupis, Common Dreams

Police in Chicago kidnapped and imprisoned more than 7,000 people between 2004 and 2015 at the secret interrogation warehouse now known publicly as Homan Square, according to new reporting by the Guardian.

Nearly 6,000 of the disappeared were black, which is proportionately more than double the city’s black population and 82.2 percent of the 7,185 total individuals sent to the facility. An additional 11.8 percent were Hispanic and 5.5 percent were white.

Only 68 people—less than one percent—held at the ‘domestic black site’ were allowed access to lawyers or to tell others where they were. As Common Dreams previously reported, the imprisonments and interrogations at Homan Square happened off the books, without detainees’ names being entered into official law enforcement databases, which would have made them easier to find.

“The reality is, no one knows where that person is at Homan Square,” University of Chicago Law School professor Craig Futterman said. “They’re disappeared at that point.”

The latest disclosures in the Guardian‘s series on the site, the result of an ongoing transparency lawsuit and investigation, reveal that police officers kept detainees at Homan Square for hours and even days and pressured them to become informants as part of the department’s anti-gang operations.

Spencer Ackerman reports:

The police portrayals contrast sharply with those of Homan Square detainees and their lawyers, who insist that “if this could happen to someone, it could happen to anyone”. A 30-year-old man named Jose, for example, was one of the few detainees with an attorney present when he surrendered to police. He said officers at the warehouse questioned him even after his lawyer specifically told them he would not speak.

“The Fillmore and Homan boys,” Jose said, referring to police and the facility’s cross streets, “don’t play by the rules.”

“Not much shakes me in this business—baby murder, sex assault, I’ve done it all,” one attorney, David Gaeger, told the Guardian. “That place was and is scary. It’s a scary place. There’s nothing about it that resembles a police station. It comes from a Bond movie or something.” Gaeger’s client was sent to Homan Square in 2011 for a marijuana arrest.

In fact, the majority of those sent to the facility were arrested for drug charges, rather than violent crime.

Many others were never even charged.

Meanwhile, police accounts have varied widely from those of the disappeared. In many cases, officers stated that detainees were given access to attorneys when they were not, or the visits proved too short to be useful. One woman, identified as Chevoughn, said she was kept for eight to ten hours at Homan Square over theft allegations, where she was questioned in a “cage” and denied access to a lawyer until she went to central booking after her kidnapping.

Cook County commissioner Richard Boykin and U.S. Representative Danny Davis in March demanded that the Department of Justice investigate the activities that took place at Homan Square.

Canada’s opposition wins historic elections

Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party sweeps to power, ending nearly a decade of Conservative Party rule.

by Al Jazeera

Justin Trudeau is set to become Canada’s new prime minister after his Liberal Party swept to power in general elections, ending nearly a decade of Conservative Party rule.

The Liberals seized a parliamentary majority, an unprecedented turn in political fortunes that smashed the record for the number of seats gained from one election to the next.

The Liberals had been a distant third place party in parliament before this election.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper conceded defeat, ending his government’s nine-year run in power and the 56-year-old’s brand of fiscal and cultural conservatism.

Trudeau, 43, the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, pledged to run a $7.7bn annual budget deficit for three years to invest in infrastructure and help stimulate Canada’s anaemic economic growth.

This rattled financial markets ahead of the vote and the Canadian dollar weakened on news of his victory.

Trudeau has said he will repair Canada’s cool relations with the Obama administration, withdraw Canada from the combat mission against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in favour of humanitarian aid and training, and tackle climate change.

Trudeau vaulted from third place to lead the polls in the final days of the campaign, overcoming Conservative attacks that he is too inexperienced to govern and to return to the prime minister’s residence in Ottawa where he grew up as a child.

“When the time for change strikes, it’s lethal,” former Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney said in a television interview.

“I ran and was successful because I wasn’t Pierre Trudeau. Justin is successful because he isn’t Stephen Harper,” Mulroney added.

The Conservatives were projected to become the official opposition in parliament, with the left-leaning New Democratic Party in third.

Liberal supporters at the party’s campaign headquarters broke into cheers and whistles when television networks projected that Trudeau would be the next prime minister.

“A sea of change here. We are used to high tides in Atlantic Canada. This is not what we hoped for,” said Peter MacKay, a former senior Conservative cabinet minister.

The 11-week campaign was considered too close to call for nearly two months, a virtual tie between the Conservatives, Liberals and left-leaning NDP.

Trudeau, who took over a party in shambles in 2013, trailed early in the campaign, brushed off by his opponents as being more style than substance and an intellectual lightweight who was not ready for the job.

But a bold pledge to run a budget deficit and boost spending to spur the economy, as well as a positive message and his gregarious nature, helped the Liberals engineer a turnaround.

Up to 26.4 million electorates were eligible to vote in 338 electoral districts. About 3.6 million had already cast a ballot in advance voting a week ago.

Amid the issues raised during the campaign was a record influx of refugees fleeing war in Syria, a court ruling quashing a veil ban and a recession – crises that gave Canadians a chance to assess parties’ reactions in near-real time.

by Al Jazeera

Dozens of people have been wounded in a shootout between Israeli forces and Islamic Jihad members in the city of Jenin in the north of the occupied West Bank.

The fighting broke out overnight Monday after about 40 Israeli army vehicles turned up outside the house of the group’s senior commander, Bassam al-Saeedi, in the al-Hadaf neighbourhood of the Jenin refugee camp, sources told Al Jazeera.

A Palestinian security official said that a local leader of Hamas, Majdi Abu al-Heija, his son, and his brother were arrested in the raid.

Israeli soldiers surrounded their home and came under fire from Palestinians protecting the two men. Several Palestinians were wounded and taken to hospital, he said.

Israeli forces then used bulldozers to demolish parts of the home, the source told Al Jazeera.

Soldiers also tried to arrest Islamic Jihad member al-Saeedi but could not find him, he said. He spoke anonymously as he is not allowed to brief the media.

Israeli troops withdrew from the camp after demolishing al-Heija’s home.

Medical sources told Al Jazeera that they have dealt with 12 injures, most due to the effects of tear gas.

Peter Lerner, the Israeli army spokesman, confirmed an “exchange of fire”   but did not elaborate further.

Confirmed: Exchange of fire in #Jenin this evening during arrest of Palestinian terror suspects. Incident is ongoing, I’ll update ASAP.

— Peter Lerner (@LTCPeterLerner) August 31, 2015

A statement by the Israeli military released later said there had been an “activity to arrest a senior Hamas operative in Jenin.”

“A violent riot of hundreds of Palestinians erupted in the area. The crowd hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails at the forces. A border police officer was moderately injured,” the statement read.

Virender Sehwag ‘The Sultan of Multan’ retires from international cricket

October 20, 2015 by Nasheman

Virender Sehwag

New Delhi: One of India’s greatest opening batsmen Virender Sehwag announced on Tuesday that he will be retiring from all forms of international cricket and Indian Premier League (IPL).

Sehwag, celebrating 37th birthday today, had already hinted about his imminent retirement at a function in Dubai yesterday and he took barely a few hours to make it official.

“I hereby retire from all forms of international cricket and from the Indian Premier League,” Sehwag tweeted.

I hereby retire from all forms of international cricket and from the Indian Premier League. A statement will follow.

— Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) October 20, 2015

The decision comes after Sehwag signed up to play in the next year’s Masters Champions League 2020, where only retired cricketers can play. Sehwag was unveiled at the launch ceremony of the veterans 2020 league in Dubai.

Sehwag’s decision comes barely a few days after one of his contemporaries Zaheer Khan decided to call time on his career. Sehwag had not been in the Indian team since 2013 and had not been in the reckoning either.

An outstanding career

In a glorious international career spanning over 12 years, Sehwag played 104 Tests scoring 8586 runs at an impressive average of 49.34, hitting 23 centuries and 32 half-centuries.

He is the only triple centurion in Tests for India having scored a career-best knock of 309 against Pakistan at Multan, which also is an Indian record. He is also one of those rare batsmen to have scored two triple tons with his next one (319) coming against South Africa.

In 251 ODIs, he accumulated 8273 runs at an average of 35.05 and scored 15 hundreds apart from hitting 38 fifties.

In 19 Twenty20 Internationals, he managed 394 runs with two half-centuries.

He has been a part of two World Cup winning teams under Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s leadership, 2007 World T20 in South Africa and the ICC ODI World Cup in India.

His next innings

Sehwag is going to feature in the 2016 Masters Champions League (MCL) whose rules clearly state that only retired players can participate.

At the MCL launch function here on Monday, Sehwag stressed that if he is not going to feature in India’s international scene, he will retire soon.

“If I am not retired I will not be able to play (in the tournament). I will go back to India and announce my retirement. It is not official yet. I am playing first class and not international cricket,” Sehwag told a news channel.

His batting was also instrumental in helping India win the 2011 World Cup at home. He is also the only batsman along with Don Bradman, Chris Gayle, Brian Lara to have scored a triple century twice in Test matches.

Full text of Sehwag’s statement:

To paraphrase Mark Twain, the report of my retirement yesterday was exaggerated! However. I have always done what I felt was right and not what conformists thought to be right. God has been kind and I have done what I wanted to do – on the field and in my life and I had decided some time back that] will retire on my 37m birthday. So today, while I spend my day with my family. I hereby announce my retirement from all forms of International Cricket and from the Indian Premier League.

Cricket has been my life and continues to be so. Playing for India was a memorable journey and i tried to make it more memorable for my team mates and the Indian cricket fans. I believe that I was reasonably successful in doing so. For that, I wish to thank all my team mates over the years – some of the greatest players of the game. I would like to thank all my Captains who believed in me and backed me to the hilt. I also thank our greatest partner, the Indian cricket fan for all the love, support and memories. I have also played against a lot of great players and it was an absolute pleasure and honour to do so. It was possibly the greatest motivation there was to play to the best of my ability. I have lived my dream and played at the finest of cricket grounds across the globe and I want to thank the groundsmen, clubs. associations and everyone who painstakingly prepare the arena for our performances.

I miss my father today. he was there when the journey started and I wish he could have been there today as well but I know I made him proud and wherever he is today, he is watching me with pride. I want to thank my coach, Mr. A.N. Sharma sir who was possibly the only coach who could have groomed me into the player that I became, I would probably have struggled to play for my school under any other coach. My mother. my wife Aarti and my children Aryavir and Vedant are my biggeststrength and their presence in my life keeps my mind without fear and head held high.

I would like to thank the BCCI for all its support over the years. The work that the BCCI does at such a scale is phenomenal and it has had some fine administrators over the years who have led the Board in developing the game. appreciating the contribution of players and have brought a lot of benefit to the players. I would also like to thank the Delhi and District Cricket Association and particularly Mr. Arun laitley who always supported me and sought our feedback and implemented what the players wanted and his presence ensured that I always had someone to rely upon personally and for the furtherance of the game’s best interest in Delhi.

I would like to thank everyone at the liaryana Cricket Association who have welcomed me with so much love and affection and it is really exciting to work with some really talented youngsters. I would especially like to thank Chaudhary Ranbir Singh Mahendra who has always had words of motivation for me during the toughest of times and l have felt safe in the knowledge that I can always turn to him for well considered advice which I value immensely.

I would also like to thank the Delhi Daredevils and the Kings XI Punjab, the franchisees that I represented. for believing in me and letting me be a part of them. l always gave my best for my team and consider myself fortunate to play with some brilliant players in the IPL.

I would also like to thank the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC). Very little is known about the effort they put in to promote sportsmen and sportswomen across various disciplines. ONGC gave me the security to pursue my game and the organization will always have a special place in my heart.

I must also add that l have enjoyed every Press conference and every interaction with the members of the media through out my international career and the presence of lndian media on foreign tours has left some very pleasant memories that I shall always cherish.

I want to thank all my sponsors for believing in me and all the bat manufacturers that have been associated with me over the years for providing me the willow that I love.

I want to tell everyone at the Sehwag International School. lhaijar that I now hope to have a higher frequency of visits to the campus to be with you all.

I also want to thank everyone for all the cricketing advice given to me over the years and apologise for not accepting most of it! I had a reason for not following it; I did it my way!

Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav convicted for raping woman passenger in Delhi

October 20, 2015 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A Delhi court has convicted an Uber cab driver of raping a young woman passenger last year.

On December 5, Shiv Kumar Yadav had sexually assaulted the woman, a finance executive working in Gurgaon, while she on her way back home in Inderlok in northwest Delhi.

Yadav was arrested two days later from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.

The court today convicted Yadav, 32, for offences including endangering a woman’s life while raping her, abducting and criminally intimidating her. Yadav faces a maximum punishment of life imprisonment. Arguments on sentencing will be heard on Friday.

The woman, who had hired the cab by using the taxi service’s app, had, in her statement, said that she fell asleep in the cab on her way home from dinner. She said she was then taken to a deserted area not far from her home where the driver raped her and threatened to violate her with an iron rod, a barbarous tactic used in the fatal gang-rape of a young student on a moving bus two years ago in the capital.

The incident had sparked massive outrage across the country, renewing debate on the safety of women in the national capital. The Delhi government later banned the Uber in the national capital.

Uber, with which Shiv Kumar Yadav had been registered, had drawn fire for failing to deliver on its promise of safety. It had not conducted any background checks on Yadav, who had at least five cases against him – two under the Uttar Pradesh Control of Goondas Act and the rest relating to sexual assaults.
