“My father is innocent”, says Moulana Anzar Shah Qasmi’s son

Bengaluru: Syed Fauzan Shah Qasmi, the eldest son of Moulana Anzar Shah Qasmi told Nasheman.in that his father is innocent, and his arrest is based on baseless allegations. Moulana Anzar Shah was arrested on Jan 6th by Delhi Special Cell on allegations that he is linked to Al Qaeda.

He said while it’s true that Moulana Anzar Shah was ruthless in his speeches, and there are many within the community, who were irked by his words, but never has he made any speech against the country. “Being an Imam, he used  to give bayans (sermons) urging Muslims to follow the Quran and the sayings of the Prophet, just like every other imam. The only difference was in his style of speech”.

Ever since his arrest, Fauzan says, his father has been calling them every alternate day, and has assured the family that he is fine, and there is nothing to worry about. Fauzan told Nasheman.in, that many Muslim religious leaders, including the President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Maulana Syed Arshad Madani, have come forward to offer assistance. Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has also appointed M S Khan, a Delhi-based advocate, to follow up the case of the Maulana.

Fauzan said that he has faith in the law of the land, and said justice will be provided to his father. However, he also objected to the manner, the arrest took place and the manner in which he is being portrayed by the media.

“My father is a well-known Islamic scholar. The media, even before any evidence is produced against him, has already labelled him a terrorist, which is absolutely unacceptable,” he protested.

He said this is an attempt to malign the Muslim community and demanded an impartial investigation in the matter.

Court accepts plea against Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan for wearing shoes in temple

January 16, 2016 by Nasheman

A local court accepted a plea by Hindu Mahasabha against Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and a private TV channel for showing the actors inside a temple wearing shoes during a reality show.

SALMAN-SHAHRUKH

Meerut: A local court accepted a plea by Hindu Mahasabha against Bollywood superstars Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and a private TV channel for purportedly showing the actors inside a temple wearing shoes during a reality show.

The court has fixed the date for hearing on January 18.

“A scene with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan inside a Kali temple on the sets of TV reality show ‘Bigg Boss’ was broadcast by Colors channel in December last year,” Bharat Rajput, president of Hindu Mahasabha’s Meerut unit said.

Rajput said that he had written a letter to the SSP and the District Magistrate of Meerut on December 23 and also sent an email to the channel over the issue.

He alleged that no one should enter any religious places with their shoes and airing it on TV was insensitive as it hurt people’s religious sentiment.

Rajput said, when the channel didn’t respond and the administration or the police didn’t take steps over the issue, a petition was filed at the court of CJM Sanjay Kumar Singh against the channel, the programme’s director and also Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.

Movie Review: ‘Shashan’ is a clichéd fare

January 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

shasan

Producer: Shekhar Pathak
Director: Gajendra Ahire
Star Cast: Makarand Anaspure, Bharat Jadhav, Jitendra Joshi, Manava Naik, Siddharth Jadhav, Vrinda Gajendra, Aditi Bhagwat, Vikram Gokhle, Sudhir Dalvi, Nagesh Bhosle, Milind Shinde, Anjali Walsangkar, Amey Dhare, Ravindra Berde, Jayant Savarkar, Dr. Shriram Lagoo, Mohan Joshi and Kiran Karmarkar
Genre: Drama
Verdict: AVERAGE

Director Gajendra Ahire is known more for his offbeat style of filmmaking and in his latest outing Shashan he has also succeeded in creating a casting coup of sorts. So Shashan happens to be a multi starer.

Plot: Based on the backdrop of a dying factory, the film revolves around the game of politics that is being played and how everyone involves gets entangled in this game. How an upcoming young union leader uses this situation to fulfil his ambition of becoming a political bigwig is showcased in Shashan.

Aces: All the seasoned actors have left a lasting impact on screen so what if most of them have ended up appearing in miniscule roles, including the most revered actor Dr. Shreeram Lagoo. But a special mention must be made of Makarand Anaspure, Bharat Jadhav, Jitendra Joshi, Manava Naik & Aditi Bhagwat for their effortless act. That apart hats off to a debutante non – Marathi producer like Shekhar Pathak for backing this expensively off beat film.

Minuses: The screenplay is all jumbled up with randomly disconnected shots topped with too many politically oriented sub plots.

Last Word: Fans of the above mentioned stars will patronise Shashan otherwise its chances at the box office turnstiles seems bleak with as many as 5 Marathi films releasing this week.

Smartphone app initiative feeds pregnant women in Homs

January 16, 2016 by Nasheman

WFP campaign allows app users to provide 2,000 vulnerable women and babies with vital nutrition in Syrian city of Homs.

by Teo Kermeliotis, Al Jazeera

It costs just $0.50, and all it takes is a simple tap on your smartphone, yet it can have a profound impact on the lives of vulnerable Syrians facing severe hunger and malnutrition.

Just two months after hitting its target of helping feed 20,000 Syrian refugee children for a year, the World Food Programme (WFP) has launched a new mobile funding initiative aiming to help nourish women and newborns in the war-torn city of Homs.

The goal is for users of the ShareTheMeal smartphone app to help provide 2,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers, and their children up to six-months-old, with a year’s worth of vital nutrition.

WFP spokesperson Abeer Etefa said the women in the Aoun distribution centre will receive vouchers to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat, which will allow them to improve their dietary diversity.

“This is particularly important for both mother and child during pregnancy and the first few months after giving birth. The balanced nutrition has a crucial influence on the growth and development of their children,” she told Al Jazeera.

Hunger and devastation

Homs, previously the epicentre of the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, has been under a ceasefire since December 2015.

Yet, the five-year conflict has left the city in central Syria largely destroyed, with many of its citizens displaced and in dire need of support.

“The city is devastated,” Sebastian Stricker, head of the ShareTheMeal project, told Al Jazeera. “There are food shortages; a lot of people are displaced and are suffering from severe poverty,” he added.

Having a daily meal, Stricker said, does not only help the women and young children avoid irreversible lifelong consequences, but also provides them with a semblance of normality amid the prolonged crisis.

“It’s something that they can rely on,” he said. “It’s something that gives them some sense of living a normal life again.”

Sharing meals

The free-to-download app, which allows contributors to follow the impact of their donations, is available globally for iOS and Android users. Developers said that a donation of $0.50 can provide women with enough nutrition for a day.

The concept is to allow people around the world to digitally “share” their meals while having dinner or lunch in a fast and easy way.

WFP’s latest campaign comes two months after it first rolled out ShareTheMeal in mid-November in a bid to help nourish Syrian refugee children who had been forced to flee their homes.

Since then, some 400,000 people from 197 countries and territories have used the app, helping the group to raise about $2m – enough to provide school snacks to 20,000 children in refugee camps in Jordan for a full year.

“Some of these children hadn’t eaten in weeks,” said Stricker. “Now they are being fed every day.”

‘Slow death’

The WFP says it must raise $25m each week to meet the basic food needs of people affected by the complex and worsening crisis in Syria, which has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced millions.

The UN, which has called the use of starvation as a weapon a “war crime“, is struggling to deliver aid to about 4.5 million Syrians who live in hard-to-reach areas, including nearly 400,000 people in besieged areas.

On Thursday, an international convoy carrying food and other necessities entered the famine-struck town Madaya for the second time this week, following devastating reports of starvation and illness.

“We would go for three days without food, then we would go and gather grass to just boil and eat it,” Mubarak Aloush, a Madaya resident who managed to escape to Lebanon told Al Jazeera.

On Monday, a first convoy reached Madaya and truckloads of aid also entered two other towns blockaded by rebel groups.

A new round of Syrian peace talks is scheduled for later this month, and access to humanitarian aid is seen as a key confidence-building measure.

James Denselow, a writer on Middle East politics and security issues and a research associate at the Foreign Policy Centre, said the discussions must place humanitarian relief for besieged or hard-to-reach areas at the top of their agenda.

“The slow death of those starving in areas across the country is a matter of huge urgency and a test for all parties to display their commitment to a peaceful end to the conflict,” he told Al Jazeera.

“If actors on the ground fail to find a consensus on allowing the access of aid to Syria’s beleaguered civilian population then the international community must take responsibility to put an end to such medieval practices being deployed in the modern age.

“The fate of Syrians themselves must be placed at the heart of any discussion on Syria.”

by Al Jazeera

The siege of a popular hotel in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, is over after security forces stormed the hotel which was under siege since Friday evening, the country’s interior minister has said.

At least 27 people, including four assailants, have been killed and 126 hostages freed in the operation backed by the French forces to retake the Splendid Hotel, in the city centre, security officials have told Associated Press news agency.

“They started shooting, shooting and everybody lay down on the ground,” Mariette Kineou, a witness who was in the Cappuccino Cafe opposite hotel Splendid, told Reuters.

“As soon as you lifted your head you would get shot straight away so you had to pretend to be dead and they even came to touch our feet to check if we were alive… ”

Interior Minister Simon Compaore told Reuters news agency that victims belonged to 18 different countries. Security officials said that two of the attackers were women.

He said that 33 of the freed hostages were being treated for injuries, adding that security operations were continuing to flush out gunmen holed up in a nearby hotel.

Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kabore said the attack – the first in Ouagadougou, was “cowardly and vile”.

He told Associated Press on Saturday that that a fourth gunman was killed at the nearby Yidi hotel.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the attack, SITE Intelligence Group, a monitoring organisation, reported.

The 147-room Splendid Hotel, which is popular with foreigners and diplomats, was stormed by the gunmen on Friday night after the nearby Cappuccino Cafe was struck by heavy gunfire.

In November, gunmen stormed the Radisson Blu hotel in the Malian capital, Bamako, and took at least 170 people hostage. The attack left 19 people killed.

Burkina Faso elected Kabore as its new president in a historic vote in November, becoming the West African country’s first new leader in decades.

No government interference in Start-Up India scheme: Jaitley

January 16, 2016 by Nasheman

jaitley

New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said the new “Start-Up India” scheme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote and nurse entrepreneurship will ensure minimum interference from the government with attractive tax incentives.

“Start-Up India will change conventions. Government will merely be a facilitator for start-ups,” the finance minister told the inaugural session of the day-long event here which will will see the prime minister formally unveil the scheme later in the evening.

“We ostensibly broke away from the license raj in 1991, conceived with idea that government will decide which businesses can run,” said Jaitley. “Our effort in last few years has been to restrict role of the state in policy domain,” he said, assuring Start-Up India scheme will follow that path.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister said he looked forward to the formal launch.

“Start-UpIndia movement begins today. This movement celebrates the energy and enterprising spirit of our youth,” he tweeted. “Will join the programme to commence the Start-Up India movement this evening. Looking forward to interacting with start-up entrepreneurs.”

The event at the Vigyan Bhavan official conference complex has been a top draw.

“There is seating capacity of 1,350 (at Vigyan Bhavan). Over 200,000 people have sought passes. Please sympathise with us. There is live relay,” Industries Secretary Amitabh Kant had tweeted ahead of the event.

Ban on entry of Pramod Muthalik extended for 2 months by Goa govt

January 16, 2016 by Nasheman

Pramod Muthalik

Panaji: North Goa district magistrate has renewed for further 60 days the ban on the entry of Pramod Mutalik, chief of Karnataka-based fringe rightwing Hindu outfit ‘Sri Ram Sene’ and any of his associates or members within the jurisdiction of the north Goa with effect from January 16.

The Supreme Court on August 31 last year had dismissed a petition of Mr. Muthalik, leader of Sene known for his moral policing, challenging the Goa government’s order banning his entry in Goa.

Mr. Muthalik and his associates were banned from entering Goa in August, 2014 over concerns expressed by the police. His petition challenging the ban order was also dismissed by the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court.

He had, inter alia, said in his plea before the Supreme Court that the repeated prohibitory orders since 2014 violated his fundamental rights, as he wanted to visit the BJP-ruled State for religious purposes.

Aamir Khan’s film ‘Dangal’ deserves ‘treatment’, says BJP leader

January 16, 2016 by Nasheman

dangal

Indore: Super star Aamir Khan’s ‘intolerance’ remarks continue to haunt him with a senior BJP leader today suggesting “treatment” to his upcoming movie Dangal in the same way that was done to Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Dilwale’, whose business was marred by protests from Hindutva groups.

BJP general secretary Kaliash Vijayvargiya hinted at teaching a lesson to Aamir by saying at a public function that “treatment to one has been done. Now it is time for the other to be treated. ‘Dangal me mangal karna hai’. You should keep this in mind.

“When anybody says that intolerance is rising in our society, then it makes me a little angry. Then he has to be treated. His treatment is very necessary.”

Though he did not name either Shahrukh or Dilwale, his reference seemed to be aimed at him as his last movie was marred by protests at several places. Khan, too, had earlier spoken about rising intolerance in Indian, prompting the BJP leader to brand him a “traitor”, a remark he withdrew later facing public backlash.

Vijayvargiya’s remarks came a day after another party general secretary, Ram Madhav, had denounced Aamir Khan’s comments on ‘intolerance’, saying he should not preach about the country’s prestige only to an auto-rickshaw driver but also his wife.

‘Cow slaughter’ charge being used to target us, says cricketer Shami’s father

January 16, 2016 by Nasheman

mohammed-shami

Meerut: Indian pacer Mohammed Shami’s father, Tauseef Ahmad, on Friday claimed that his family was in ‘danger’ as they were being targeted in the name of ‘cow slaughter’.

His comments a day after his son Mohammad Haseeb (brother of Shami) was arrested and then subsequently released on bail on charge of assaulting and “pressuring” cops to release a few men arrested on charges of cow slaughter

“My son was not even present there at the time of the incident and had reached the site only much later,” Ahmad told media persons.

“Haseeb was just an onlooker like so many others who had gathered there. He was unnecessarily dragged into the controversy. It is just that a few persons are nurturing enmity with our family because of the publicity we have got after Shami started playing for team India. I had reported the issue to the Amroha district magistrate (DM) in this regard a month ago. This (the arrest) is the result of that. A term like ‘cow slaughter’ is being used to target us.”

Amroha DM Ved Prakash meanwhile confirmed that Ahmad had indeed met him a month ago. “It is true he had met me with a complaint that someone was threatening his family on phone. But he did not mention who his tormentors were.”

On Thursday afternoon, station officer of Didoli police station, Praveen Kumar, got a tip-off regarding a person wanted in a case of cow slaughter. When the team led by Kumar went to arrest the man, Haseeb allegedly prevented the police from doing their job and allegedly scuffled with sub-inspector Pradeep Bhardwaj.

In the confusion, the accused fled the scene. Police then arrested Haseeb and filed charges against him.

Cops said that they filed an FIR against Haseeb under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 153 (promoting enmity between different groups), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension). However, on account of his ill-health, he was given bail.

Movie Review: ‘The Hateful Eight’ borders mainly on the scenario of mindless and meaningless violence

January 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

The Hateful Eight

Producers: Richard N Gladstein, Shanon Mclntosh & Stacey Sher
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Star Cast: Samuel L Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demien Bichir, Tim Roth, Micheal Madsen, Bruce Dern etc
Genre: Mystery
Verdict: AVERAGE

Director Quentin Tarantino of Pulp Fiction fame does not need any special introduction. His films are mostly based on non – linear story lines, satirical subject matter and above all aesthetic nay mindless violence. So his latest film The Hateful Eight is no exception.

Plot: Set 12 years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth and his fugitive Daisy Domergue, race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter 2 strangers: Major Marquis Warren, a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix, a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. And thence begins the scenario of mindless and meaningless violence.

Aces: The powerfully riveting performance of stalwart actors Samuel L Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demien Bichir, Tim Roth, Micheal Madsen and Bruce Dern. What holds you is the presentation of the film revealed in 5 varied chapters which raises your anxiety and curiosity level. This is Quentin’s 8th film and a sequel of his 7th film Django Unchained.

Minuses: Too much of gruesome blood and gore with characters being shot dead at close range in every single reel of the 5 chapters.

Last Word: Recommended only for persons who are die – hard fans of adventure and mystery, but certainly not for the weak hearted persons. Period!
