February 25, 2016 by Nasheman

sanjay_dutt

Pune: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt today walked free out of the Yerawada prison here after completing his prison term, putting behind his turbulent past as a convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case.

Clad in blue shirt and jeans, a smiling Dutt was escorted out of the imposing jail gates this morning after completing formalities and got into a car that drove him straight to Lohegaon Airport here to take a chartered flight to Mumbai.

The 56-year-old on screen ‘Khalnayak’ saluted the tri-colour fluttering on top of the jail building as he carried a bag containing his belongings and his inmate file with him.

Dutt’s wife Maanyata and noted film maker Rajkumar Hirani accompanied him on way to the city airport. The “Munnabhai” of the celluloid, saluted the soil outside the prison before his got into the waiting car, juggling a khaki bag and a green coloured file.

Sanjay spent 42 months, a remainder of the his five year sentence in the Yerawada prison. His stay was mired in various controversies relating to his frequent paroles and furlough which the detractors said was granted to him as special favours due to his celebrity status.

Prison authorities and his lawyers, however, refuted the allegations, saying his remission of 144 days and his parole leave was in accordance with jail manual and prescribed rules.

The Bollywood star was arrested on April 19, 1993, for possession and destruction of an AK-56 rifle, which was a part of cache of arms and explosives which landed in India prior to the serial blasts of March 1993.

During the investigation and the marathon trial, he spent 18 months in jail. On July 31, 2007, the TADA court in Mumbai sentenced him to six years’ rigorous imprisonment under the Arms Act and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.

In 2013, the Supreme Court upheld the ruling but reduced the sentence to five years following which he surrendered to serve the rest of his sentence. According to jail officials, Dutt was given work of making paper bags in his cell.

The actor, embroiled in heated debates over his frequent parole and furlough leave in many quarters, regularly participated in the programmes on internal circuit jail radio, jail sources said.

During his imprisonment, he was granted parole of 90 days in December 2013 and again for 30 days later.

Rail Budget: No changes in passenger fares, freight

February 25, 2016 by Nasheman

rail-budget-prabhu

New Delhi: The Railway Budget for 2016-17 today spared passengers and goods movement from any increase in tariffs while it announced introduction of three new superfast trains and creation of dedicated north-south, east-west and east coast freight corridors by 2019.

Presenting his second Budget in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu promised rationalising of the tariff structure by undertaking a review to evolve competitive rates vis-a-vis other modes of transport and to expand the freight basket as a means of additional revenue mobilisation.

Unlike last year when he tweaked freight rates, Prabhu made no changes either in passenger fares or freight rates.

The three new superfast trains announced by him include ‘Humsafar’ which will be a fully air-conditioned 3AC service with option of meals. ‘Tejas’ will showcase the future of train travel in India with speeds up to 130 km per hour with onboard services such as entertainment, local cuisine and wifi.

The two trains will ensure cost recovery through tariff and non-tariff measures while ‘Uday’ will be an overnight double-decker along with ‘Utkrishit’ double-decker air-conditioned yatri express on the busiest routes.

For improving quality of travel for unreserved passenger, a superfast ‘Antyodya’ express service would be introduced. ‘Deen Dayalu’ unreserved coaches with portable water and higher number of mobile charging points would also be introduced.

He also announced setting up of a Rail Development Authority to enable fair pricing of services, promote competition, protect customer interest and determine efficiency standards. The draft Bill in this regard will be ready after holding extensive stakeholder consultations.

Outlining the Budget estimates for the coming year, the Minister put the plan size at Rs 1.21 lakh crore. The focus will be on capital expenditure with a mix of various sources of funding in order to ensure the projects are given assured funding.

Gross traffic receipts for the coming fiscal have been fixed at Rs 1.84 lakh crore with passenger earning growth pegged at 12.4 per cent and earning target budgeted at Rs 51,012 crore.

The freight traffic is pegged at an incremental tariff of 50 million tons, anticipating a healthier growth in the core sector of the economy.

Goods earning is accordingly proposed at Rs 1.17 lakh crore. Earnings on account of other coaching and sundries have been projected at Rs 6,185 crore and Rs 9,590 crore respectively.

Pension outgo has been budgeted at Rs 45,500 crore in the coming year. Revenue generation has been targeted at Rs 1.84 lakh crore. Financial performance for the current year has reflected a savings of Rs 8,720 crore, neutralising most of the revenue shortfall.

Operating ratio has been targeted at 92 per cent for the coming year as against 90 per cent in 2015-16, restricting the growth of ordinary expenses by 11.16 per cent after building in impact of 7th Pay Commission recommendation, planned reduction in diesel and electricity consumption.

The three new freight corridors of North-South will connect Delhi and Chennai, East-West connecting Kharagpur to Mumbai and East Coast from Kharagpur to Vijawada.

“It is proposed to put these three projects on high priority to ensure structuring, award and implementation in a time-bound manner through innovative financing schemes including PPP,” Prabhu said in his more than hour long speech.

Before the current financial year ends on March 31, almost all contracts for civil engineering work would have been awarded.

Contracts worth Rs 24,000 crore have been awarded since he assumed office against Rs 13,000 crore worth of contracts in the last six years.

Presenting his “vision”, Prabhu promised that by 2020 long-felt desires of the common man will be fulfilled.

The objectives include reserved accommodation on trains on demand, time-tabled freight trains, high-end technology to improve safety record, elimination of all unmanned level crossings, improved punctuality and higher speed of freight trains and zero direct discharge of human waste.

As part of improving customer interface, the Budget proposed interaction and feedback through social media and dedicated IVRS system and making travel comfortable by generating over 65,000 additional berths and installing 2,500 water vending machines.

Wi-Fi facility has been provided at 100 station and 400 more will be covered in the coming year.

As part of safety measures, 350 manned level crossings and 1000 unmanned level crossings have been closed. 820 road over bridges and rail under bridges have been completed in the current year and work is going on in 1,350 of them.

As a passenger-friendly measure, IRCTC will manage catering services in catering and stalls at stations in a phased manner. It will explore the possibility of making catering services operational, adding 10 more IRCTC operated base kitchens.

As part of improving customer interface, work is underway on installation of a high-tech centralised network of 20,000 screens across 2000 stations for enabling real-time flow of information to passengers and also unlock huge advertising potential.

Provision of passenger amenities and beautification of stations will be taken on priority in pilgrim centres like Ajmer, Amritsar, Bihar Sharif, Chengannur, Dwarka, Gaya, Haridwar, Mathura, Nagapattinam, Nanded, Nasik, Pali, Parasnath, Pri, Tirupati, Vailankanni, Varanasi and Vasco. The Railway also intends to run ‘astha’ circuit trains to connect pilgrim centres.

HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY HELPS PROPEL NEW PARIS’ STUDIOS KREMLIN

Located in Ivry – sur -Seine, a fast developing pole for film & TV production on the outskirts of Paris, Studio Kremlin occupies a former factory building. It launched in 2014 and immediately shot to prominence as a production base for Hunger Games: Mockingjay parts 1 & 2. In 2015, it received 2 grants from the CNC to invest in its studio infrastructure, and has recently installed a 3 side green screen cyclorama. GALLIC TV DRAMAS BOOSTS EPINAY STUDIOS BIZ

Founded in 1907 by film lab & production company Eclair, Epinay Studios is France’s oldest studio complex, used by greats such as Marcel Carne, Jean Renoir, Milos Forman & Bertrand Blier. Epinay has 4 studios, including its famous 16,145 sq. ft. “F” stage, plus two 8,600 sq. ft. stages and one 2,150 sq. ft. stage. Last year was a strong one for the studio, according to sales executive Eric Moreau. For example, in 2015, Olivier Baroux’s comedy Entre Amis, starring Daniel Auteuil, wanted to film at Epinay, but due to lack of studio space, had to film in Luc Besson’s Cité du Cinema.

The mobile phone boom has helped bring Web access to an estimated 300 million Africans and growing, but high data costs & spotty connectivity have made it difficult for many VOD services to gain traction. “The infrastructure, generally, isn’t really here for streaming long – form content,” says Jason Njoku, founder of iRoko TV, widely referred to as the Netflix of Africa. “For millions, the data price points are way too high to pay for content streaming.” Recognising the challenges, iRoko switched to a mobile – 1st, Android – 1st, download – only version for its Africa platform last year. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has noted that his company is working on video -compression technology that will enable it to deliver data quickly “on any device in any broadband condition.”

NETFLIX FACES CHALLENGES AS IT PLANS A GLOBAL LAUNCH

Warner Bros superhero duel Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is to be released in China on 25th Mar, 2016. The news emerged on a Chinese social media account for the film. It was subsequently confirmed by sources close to Warner.
The date of the China outing means that the picture can get a near simultaneous day. & date release with North America and many other major territories. That in turn minimizes the erosive effects of piracy in the world’s 2nd largest theatrical marketplace, and maximizes the effect of the global publicity & marketing campaigns. China was the last country in the world to open Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening on 9th Jan, 2016, 3 or more weeks after most other territories.

Arrest the attackers of Soni Sori immediately; Provide adequate security to her children: Women India Movement

February 24, 2016 by Nasheman

Soni Sori

New Delhi: Women India Movement leader Shahira Banu came down heavily on the Chattisgarh Govt. for not doing enough in arresting the culprits who brutally attacked the tribal activist Soni Sori by throwing acid on her face. It is unfortunate that the Chattisgarh police couldn’t arrest the criminals who assaulted the Adivasi activist Soni Sori by smearing black chemical liquid on her face on last Saturday, said Shahira.

In a press statement, Shahira Banu said, Soni Sori has been actively raising her voice against the “fake encounters and the high-handedness” of the forces. The barbarous acid attack on the Adivasi activist is aimed at silencing and terrorizing women in general and activists in particular. Acid violence is a horrendous crime and this is a grave violation of human rights against the women in Indian society.

She said, at least 5 acid attack cases on women are reported every week and we see that the government does not provide adequate safe and secure environment for women in the country. That is why such offences are being witnessed day by day. It is unbearable to imagine the plight of women who are victimized by such heinous crimes.

Women India Movement strongly condemns the atrocities on women and demand from the government that required measures be taken to control crimes against women. The government is responsible first and foremost for such flagitious incidents and that the government needs to come out with an integrative approach in finding solutions to such issues, said the WIM leader.

Shahira demanded that police the case involving acid attack on Soni Sori, who is presently undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital Delhi, be investigated thoroughly by specially trained gender sensitive police officers. The activist must be compensated adequately so as to ensure her proper treatment and her school going children could be taken care of. She also expressed concern about the safety of the activists’ children who could also be vulnerable to attack by the criminals.

The WIM leader further demanded from the government that the production, distribution and storage of toxic acids be controlled and regulated strictly to avoid such offences in future.

This 56-year-old actor served 42 months of his five-year prison term in Pune’s Yerawada jail following his conviction in a case related to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

Rajya Sabha disrupted over Rohith Vemula’s suicide

February 24, 2016 by Nasheman

rajya-sabha-chaos

New Delhi: Loud anti-government slogans causing an uproar over the death of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula disrupted the Rajya Sabha Wednesday — the second day of the long budget session of the Indian parliament.

The upper house was adjourned five times after members assembled for the day at 11 a.m.

After earlier adjournments in the morning, Chairman Hamid Ansari adjourned the house till 2 in the afternoon when members refused to let the house function and wanted the government to discuss Vemula’s alleged January 17 suicide.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which has 10 members in the house, blamed the central government for the scholar’s suicide in Hyderabad University. They gathered at the chairman’s podium, demanding the government suspend the Question Hour and debate the issue first.

They raised slogans, seeking justice for the family members of the dead student. They alleged that the government was anti-Dalit. “Rohith ke parivar ko, nyaay dou, nyaay dou”, “Dalit virdohi sarkar, nahin chalegi, nahin chalegi”, they shouted incessantly in front of the podium.

BSP leader Mayawati insisted that the government should respond first and debate the issue. “This is not the first time a Dalit student committed suicide,” the BSP supremo said.

“Rohith Vemula was Ambedkar supporter. RSS did not like this, he was exploited,” Mayawati said, referring to B.R. Ambedkar, the author of the Indian Constitution, who was a Dalit leader.

The upper house was forced into five adjournments till afternoon despite Ansari making a passionate appeal to slogan shouting members, requesting them that they should let the Question Hour proceed and raise the issue later in the day.

“Disruption of question hour is violation of privilege of individual members. Is the house going on that track,” Ansari asked.

“The questions have been listed and they have to be answered.”

The government as well as the chair pointed out that a debate on the Vemula death is listed for discussion later in the day.

But the protesting members didn’t relent and continued with their slogan shouting near the chairman’s podium.

The death of the Dalit student triggered widespread protests from opposition, who demanded action against central ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya, who were blamed for forcing Vemula to take his life.

16 arrested after Muslim cop was beaten, forced to hoist saffron flag in Latur

February 24, 2016 by Nasheman

Muslim-cop-beard

Latur: Sixteen people have been arrested so far on charges of assaulting two policemen who last week stopped locals from hoisting a “saffron flag” in a communally sensitive area in Latur district, police said today.

A mob had allegedly beaten up Assistant Sub-Inspector Yunus Shaikh (57) and manhandled his colleague K Awaskar when they prevented them from putting up the flag at a controversial spot in Pangaon village.

Shaikh was hospitalised following the assault.

The 12000-strong population of Pangaon village consists of Marathas, Dalits, Reddys and Muslims among others.

On the night of February 19, Shaikh and Awaskar allegedly stopped a group of local youths from erecting the flag in the “sensitive” area. The group included Marathas and other Hindus celebrating Shivaji Jayanti, police said.

Awaskar and Shaikh, both on duty at Pangaon police chowki, reached the spot and asked the youth to leave. They told them that hoisting the flag could lead to communal clashes, a police official said.

At 9 AM on Saturday, a mob of around 200-300 people from the village, including the youths, showed up at the police chowki.

“They (youths) had incited the mob by telling them that the two policemen had crushed their flags under their feet,” the official said.

The mob then allegedly began to attack the duo with fists and lathis. The ASI and his colleague suffered head injuries, but Shaikh was hit worse and was hospitalised.

A video of the purported attack, which has gone viral, shows Shaikh being made to parade a street with the saffron flag by the mob.

Nepal finds wreckage of missing plane, all 23 dead

February 24, 2016 by Nasheman

Nepal plane crash

Kathmandu: Rescue teams in Nepal on Wednesday found the burnt-out wreckage of a passenger plane that went missing in a remote mountainous area with 23 people on board, the aviation minister said.

Aananda Prasad Pokharel said the Twin Otter turboprop aircraft had been found in the western district of Myagdi and bodies could be seen scattered around it.

“The wreckage of the plane was found in a completely burnt state in Solighopte in Myagdi district,” said Pokharel, minister for culture, tourism and civil aviation.

“The team there say that the bodies are scattered and it is not possible to identify anyone right now.

“More security agencies are being deployed and we are trying to get more information.”

The army had deployed helicopters and foot soldiers to search Myagdi, a mountainous district around 220 kilometres (160 miles) west of Kathmandu, after locals reported seeing possible wreckage of the Tara Air plane.

The airline said the plane was carrying three crew and 20 passengers, one a Chinese and one a Kuwaiti national, revising an earlier figure of 18 passengers.

All the others were from Nepal and two of them were children.

Tara Air said the Twin Otter had lost contact with air traffic control eight minutes after taking off from the tourist town of Pokhara early on Wednesday.

A statement on its website said weather conditions were good when the plane took off for Jomsom, a popular trekking destination in the Himalayas about 20 minutes’ flight from Pokhara.

“The weather at both origin and destination airports was favourable and the airport cleared for departure by the control tower at Pokhara,” it said.

Tara Air is a subsidiary of Yeti Airlines, a privately-owned domestic carrier founded in 1998 which services many remote destinations across Nepal.

It suffered its last fatal accident in 2010 when a plane chartered by a group of Bhutanese tourists crashed into a mountainside in eastern Nepal.

Experienced pilot

Air travel is popular in Nepal, which has only a limited road network. Many communities, particularly in the mountains and hills, are accessible only on foot or by air.

Aviation expert Kunda Dixit said the area was prone to very strong winds.

“Most flights in the area fly before 9:30am because very strong winds pick up after that,” he told AFP.

“It is very strange because it is a brand-new plane and the weather was clear in the morning. The pilot is very experienced and focused on safety, I flew with him only 10 days ago.”

The country, which is still reeling from a devastating earthquake last April, has in recent years suffered a number of air disasters which dealt a blow to its tourist industry.

Most have been attributed to inexperienced pilots, poor management and inadequate maintenance.

Two years ago a Twin Otter plane belonging to the national carrier Nepal Airlines crashed into a hillside shortly after taking off from Pokhara, killing all 18 people on board.

The country’s aviation sector has come under fire from international authorities and in 2013 the European Union blacklisted all Nepal’s airlines.

EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said at the time the country’s safety record “does not leave us any other choice”.

Nepal’s last major aviation accident was last May when a US military helicopter assisting with earthquake relief crashed in bad weather, killing six Marines and seven other people.
