Murdered NIA officer Tanzil Ahmed’s wife too succumbs to injuries

April 13, 2016 by Nasheman

Tanzil Ahmed

New Delhi: Farzana Khatoon, wife of NIA officer Tanzil Ahmad who was shot dead in an April 3 attack which also left her grievously injured, succumbed this morning.

She was battling for her life at AIIMS trauma centre after suffering bullet wounds, NIA said in a statement, adding that she succumbed to her injuries at 10.45 AM.

Farzana was returning from a family function along with her husband and children when they were attacked. NIA Inspector Tanzil Ahmed, who was on the team probing Pathankot terror attack, was killed while she was seriously injured in the firing by motorcycle-borne assailants.

“Her last rites will take place at Jamia Milia University Campus burial ground at 6.30 PM,” it said.

In the “planned attack”, the killers had pumped 24 bullets into 45-year-old Ahmad and four into his wife Farzana, as their daughter, 14, and son, 12, watched the gruesome incident from the back seat of the Wagon-R car they were travelling in.

The children had escaped the attack.

Initially, the NIA had said Farzana was “out of danger. There is no damage to her vital organs”.

Ahmad, who has been with the NIA ever since the organisation was formed in February 2009, had been investigating many cases especially related to banned Indian Mujahideen terror outfit. His superiors termed him as a thorough professional in intelligence gathering as well as investigation.

Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested two alleged killers including a relative of Ahmad even as the alleged mastermind is still absconding.

Police has claimed that domestic dispute was the motive behind the crime.

Among the two arrested is nephew of Ahmed’s brother-in-law Rehan. The alleged mastermind, identified as Muneer, is still at large, police had said.

According to the police, the motorcycle-borne accused followed Ahmad who was returning home in Sahaspur village of Bijnor district with his family after attending his niece’s wedding in another village in the same district on the intervening night of April 2 and 3.

The attackers overtook his vehicle at Sahaspur village and Muneer allegedly fired at Ahmed and his wife.

Along with Rehan, his accomplice Zainul was also arrested.

Later, AIIMS issued a statement saying “Khatoon was received from private hospital after 8 days of injury on April 11 at 4:30 PM with diagnosis of severe sepsis and lung consolidation. On arrival she was critically ill on ventilator and inotropes and was not responding.”

“She was managed in ICU with antibiotics, inotropes and blood products. However she continued to deteriorate and succumbed to her injuries on April 13 at 10:55 AM,” it added.

Gujarat Lions beat Kings XI Punjab on IPL debut

April 12, 2016 by Nasheman

Mohali

Mohali: Debutants Gujarat Lions began their Indian Premier League (IPL) journey with an impressive five-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab at the Punjab Cricket Association’s I.S. Bindra Stadium here on Monday.

Set a 162-run target, Lions reached the mark with 14 balls to spare with Australian opener Aaron Finch (74) scoring the majority of the runs. Dinesh Karthik (41 not out) was also a chief contributor.

Their run chase stuttered early on when former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum departed for a second ball duck, advancing down the track to be smartly stumped by Wriddhiman Saha off the bowling of Sandeep Sharma in the first over.

But Lions recovered from the loss, spearheaded by skipper Suresh Raina (20) and Finch.

Raina guided the team past the 50-run mark in the sixth over with a big six over midwicket. But then he fell off the very next ball, foxed by a Marcus Stoinis slower delivery to offer a simple catch to mid on.

Finch remained unperturbed by Raina’s dismissal and used all his experience to lead his team’s chase, bringing up his 50 in the eight over.

He forged another 50-run partnership with Karthik to bring up the 100 in the 11th over.

Lions were costing at that point but Finch’s sudden stumping in the 12th over, leaving them 117/3, gave Punjab hopes of a turnaround. Lions still needed 41 runs from 42 balls. Ravindra Jadeja’s (8) run out made the game more interesting.

But Karthik ensured they crossed the line without any more hiccups.

Earlier, Kings XI Punjab posted 161 for six after Gujarat captain Suresh Raina won the toss and opted to field, opening batsmen Murali Vijay (42 off 34) and Manan Vohra (38 in 23) provided a 78-run stand in 8.2 overs.

Then Dwayne Bravo (4/22) and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (2/30) led Gujarat’s fightback as the hosts lost four wickets for 102 runs in 12 overs.

Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis (33 in 22 balls) and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha (20) did the repair work and took the total to 161/6.

It seemed that Punjab will end up getting 180, thanks to their sound start. Right-handers Vijay and Vohra scored 53 runs without any loss till the powerplay overs (6).

Vijay hit three fours and a six off left-arm medium pacer Pradeep Sangwan, while Vohra also made merry, hitting James Faulkner for three fours in the fifth over.

The Punjab right-hander was dropped at his personal score of eight by Bravo, who ran from the deep midwicket in the fifth over.

Captain Raina’s third bowler, leg-spinner Sarabjit Ladda also went for 21 runs in his two overs.

Then the captain turned to Indian left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who broke the partnership in his second over by trapping Vohra in front of the stumps. Then the hosts’ score reached 78 in 8.2 overs.

Jadeja later also cleaned up Vijay as the right-hander opened up to create some room. He missed the ball and Punjab were 91/2 in 10.4 overs.

In the following over, medium pacer Bravo dealt a double blow, dismantling the stumps of Glenn Maxwell (two) and captain David Miller (15) — which left the home side at 102/4.

Later, Stoinis and Saha were on a damage control mode before the former picked up four boundaries to keep his team in hunt for a competitive total.

Brief scores: KXIP: (161/6, Murali Vijay 42, Manan Vohra 38, Marcus Stoinis 33; Dwayne Bravo 4/22, Ravindra Jadeja 2/30) vs Gujarat Lions (162/5, Aaron Finch 74, Dinesh Karthik 41 not out, Sandeep Sharma 1/21).

However, latest updates reveal that the supposedly high remuneration is a non -issue for the makers. After all, this one will be a mega – budgeted film and Chiru being a veteran who is almost 60 years old, there are not many star heroines who can match his stupendous mega glamour. ‘Above normal’ monsoon this year: IMD

April 12, 2016 by Nasheman

rain

New Delhi: There will be “above normal” monsoon this year, the Met office predicted today, easing fears over farm and economic growth after two consecutive years of drought.

Releasing its monsoon forecast for the season, IMD Director-General Laxman Singh Rathore said, “Monsoon will be 106 percent of the long period average (LPA). There is 94 percent probability that monsoon will be normal to excess this year. By and large, there will be fair distribution of monsoon across the country. But North-East India and South-East India, particularly Tamil Nadu, may get slightly less than normal rainfall.”Drought-hit Marathwada is also likely to receive “good” rainfall, Rathore added.

Anything less than 90 per cent of the LPA is termed as a “deficient” monsoon and 90-96 per cent of the LPA is considered as “below normal”. Monsoon is considered as “normal” if the LPA is between 96-104 per cent of the LPA.

“Above normal” monsoon is between 104-110 per cent of the LPA and anything beyond 110 per cent of the LPA is considered as “excess”.

Agriculture, which contributes 15 per cent to India’s GDP and employs about 60 per cent of the country’s population, is heavily dependent on the monsoon as only 40 per cent of the cultivable area is under irrigation.

Due to poor monsoon in 2015-16 crop year (July-June), 10 states have declared drought and the Centre has sanctioned relief package of about Rs 10,000 crore to help farmers.

Movie Review: ‘The Jungle Book’ is a delightfully entertaining film for one & all

April 11, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

The Jungle Book

Producer: Jon Favreau & Brigham Taylor
Director: Jon Favreau
Star Cast: Neel Sethi, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Alba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito, Christopher Walken, Gary Shandling, Brighton Rose, Sam Raimi & Russell Peters
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: Very Good

Plot: Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is a human boy raised by the Indian wolves Raksha (Lupita Nyong’o) & Akela (Giancarlo Esposito) ever since he was brought to them as a baby by Bagheera the Black Panther (Ben Kingsley). When the fearsome scarred Bengal Tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) threatens his life since man isn’t allowed in the jungle, Mowgli leaves his jungle home. Guided by Bagheera & Baloo the bear (Bill Murray), he sets out on a journey of self – discovery while evading the man – hunting Shere Khan. Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who do not exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), the Indian python, and the smooth – talking Bornean orangutan -resembling Gigantopithecus.
King Louie (Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive & deadly “red flower”.

Aces: Director Jon Favreau deserves a standing ovation for making a delightfully entertaining movie for kids, in fact one which will be definitely enjoyed by one & all. Performance wise Neel Sethi, the debutante child actor, is the scene stealer. The film also has an overall technical finesse. That apart all the voice over artiste too, deserves a special mention.

Minuses: The inappropriate use of the songs which does not jell well with the adventurous mood of the film.

Last Word: The previous Jungle Book movie made in 1997 was an animated version of Rudyard Kipling’s novella and the latest version of The Jungle Book is the live – action movie based on the same novella which has surpassed even the previous attempt. And the 2016 movie The Jungle Book made in 3 dimensional is like an added bonanza.
