CPI (M) worker hacked to death in Kerala; Leftists blame BJP

October 10, 2016 by Nasheman

cpi-m

Kannur: The CPI-M condemned the brutal murder of one of its leaders in Kerala “by RSS hoodlums” on Monday and accused the RSS and its affiliates of launching murderous attacks on the Left.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist said a group of heavily armed RSS activists entered a toddy shop where K. Mohanan, 52, was working and hacked him to death.

Around 30-40 sharp wounds were inflicted on his body, a CPI-M statement said. This, it said, was the second murder of a CPI-M worker in Dharmadom constituency represented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Earlier, RSS workers had attacked a CPI-M victory procession in the same constituency on the day of vote counting, leading to the death of CPI-M worker Ravindranath, it said.

The party urged police to speedily arrest the culprits responsible for the latest murder.

“This heinous murder took place even as a motley group of BJP workers marched to the CPI-M headquarters in Delhi, purportedly to protest (against) the attacks on RSS workers in Kerala,” the statement said.

“The fact is that in Kerala it is the CPI-M and other constituents of the

LDF that have been at the receiving end of the murderous attacks mounted

by the RSS and its outfits.

“In the short duration that the current LDF government has been in office,

as many as six CPI-M workers have been killed and around 300 of its members injured in brutal attacks launched by the RSS.

“Thirty-five offices of the party have been attacked and destroyed and 80 houses of party workers attacked and damaged,” the CPI-M said.

Gun battle rages at government compound in Kashmir

October 10, 2016 by Nasheman

At least one Indian soldier wounded as suspected rebels lay siege to government office in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Kashmir-firing

by Al Jazeera

Indian police say security forces are battling a group of gunmen inside a government compound in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir.

Police told the Associated Press news agency on Monday that army and paramilitary soldiers cordoned off the compound after gunshots were heard near Pampore town, about 10km outside of Srinagar, capital of Indian Kashmir.

One soldier was reported wounded in the initial fighting.

Sources told Al Jazeera that at least two suspected rebels are holed up inside the Entrepreneurship Development Institute, and that intermittent shooting could be heard in the building.

The attack comes as Kashmir is experiencing its largest protests against Indian rule in recent years, sparked by the killing in July of a popular rebel commander by Indian soldiers.

The protests, and a sweeping military crackdown, have all but paralysed life in Indian-controlled Kashmir, with shops, schools and most banks remaining shut and mobile phone and internet services working intermittently.

Kashmir has been divided between rivals India and Pakistan since the end of British rule in 1947. Both claim the territory in full.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir, where rebel groups have fought Indian troops since 1989 for either independence or a merger with Pakistan. More than 70,000 people have been killed since then.

Tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours has soared after an armed attack last month on an Indian army base killed 19 soldiers with the two armies exchanging heavy fire and mortars across their de facto border in Kashmir almost every day.

Samsung halts production of Note 7 phone

Samsung Electronics suspends production of the smartphone a month after recall over explosive batteries, reports say.

The announcement saw Samsung’s share price plunge by 4 percent [Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Samsung Electronics has temporarily suspended production of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones following reports of fires in replacement devices, according to South Korean media.

Monday’s move is a further setback for the technology giant in the midst of its worst ever phone recall crisis.

“[Samsung] still hasn’t confirmed that it has definitely halted production of the Galaxy Note 7 but it has released a statement for the first time today, Monday, in the last hour or so, saying that it is ‘temporarily adjusting the Galaxy Note 7 schedule to take further steps to ensure quality and safety matters’,” Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett said, reporting from Seoul.

The Yonhap News Agency reported that Samsung’s decision to halt Note 7 production was done in cooperation with authorities in China and the United States, citing an unnamed source at a Samsung partner company.

“If the Note 7 is allowed to continue it could lead to the single greatest act of brand self-destruction in the history of modern technology,” Eric Schiffer, brand strategy expert and chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, told Reuters news agency.

“Samsung should arrest the sale of Note 7’s and protect the safety of their clients before profits and ultimately as a byproduct protect Samsung. Samsung needs to take a giant write-down and cast the Note 7 to the engineering hall of shame next to the Ford Pinto.”

On Sunday, US telecommunications firm AT&T and German rival T-Mobile said they would halt exchanges of recalled Samsung Galaxy Note 7s pending further investigations.

The announcement saw Samsung’s share price plunge by as much as 4 percent in early morning trade on Monday – even before the Yonhap report came out.

Shares fall

At midday, Samsung shares were trading at 1.65 million won – down 3.2 percent from Friday’s close.

AT&T said it would still offer customers the option to exchange Galaxy Note 7s for another Samsung smartphone or another device of their choice.

T-Mobile said it was halting sales of the smartphone, as well as the exchanges.

Australia’s largest carrier, Telstra Corp, said Samsung had paused supply of new Note 7s to the company.

“Analysts are saying [the recall] could cost between $2bn and $5bn, and that was even before this latest development,” said Fawcett, adding that some 2.5 million phones worldwide would need to be replaced.

Major airlines and airport authorities again urged passengers to stop using the phone on board.

“In light of recent incidents and concerns raised about Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices, passengers are strongly advised not to turn on or charge these devices on board aircraft and not to stow them in any checked baggage,” Hong Kong International Airport said on its website on Monday.

Singapore Airlines also said on Monday that the powering up and charging of Note 7s is prohibited on all its flights.

Ashwin puts India in commanding position vs New Zealand

Indore: Riding on star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s 20th haul of five wickets or more, India put themselves in a commanding position reaching 18/0 to take an overall lead of 276 runs over New Zealand at stumps on day three of the third and final Test at the Holkar stadium here on Monday.

Ashwin led the Indian charge with six wickets and two brilliant run-outs along with left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (2/80) to bundle out the visitors for a paltry 299 just after the tea break in response to India’s first innings total of 557/5 declared.

Despite taking a huge lead and in a position to enforce the follow on, India skipper Virat Kohli opted to bat for a second time. Opener Murali Vijay (11) and one down Cheteshwar Pujara (1) were at the crease when the umpires decided to unsettle the bails.

Pujara had to rush to the middle after veteran opener Gautam Gambhir (6) was forced to return to the pavilion with a shoulder injury.

Playing in his 39th Test, Ashwin ran through the Kiwi top order comprising Tom Latham (52), Kane Williamson (8), Ross Taylor (0), Luke Ronchi (0) and James Neesham (71) besides running out top scorer Martin Guptil (72) and Jeetan Patel (18). He later dismissed tailender Trent Boult (0) to finish things off in style.

Jadeja complimented his senior partner well by packing back stumper B.J. Watling (23) and Mitchell Santner (22).

Already on the backfoot after losing the series 0-2, the Kiwis got off to a good start with openers Guptill and Latham, who put on 118 runs but ran out of steam once Kohli introduced spin from both ends.

Apart from the opening partnership, Neesham was involved in two vital stands — 53 for the sixth wicket with Watling and 52 for the seventh wicket with Santner but that was not enough to take the visitors anywhere near the Indian total.

Earlier, resuming the day at 28 for no loss, the visitors had just lost the wicket of Latham when Ashwin trapped him plumb in front in the morning session as they went for lunch at 125/1.

The Indians wrested the upper hand early on in the post-lunch session when New Zealand lost three wickets in four overs.

The Chennai tweaker picked up his second wicket when Williamson dragged the ball onto his stumps while attempting a cut.

The off-spinner then sent Taylor back to the pavilion in his very next over before a straight drive by Ronchi deflected off his hand to hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end and catch Guptill out of his crease.

Ashwin then picked up his fourth wicket when Ajinkya Rahane showed some excellent fielding at first slip to send back Ronchi.

Watling and Neesham then tried to bring the Kiwi innings back on track. But Jadeja found Watling’s outside edge with a delivery that turned away sharply after pitching to put the visitors into further trouble just before the tea break.

After the tea break, it was a one way traffic for India as both the spinners lost little time in taking the remaining four wickets before Kohli opted against enforcing the follow-on.

Eyeing a 3-0 whitewash, India will now aim to consolidate their lead and give a stiff target when they come out to bat on Tuesday.

NDTV Gets Slapped With Higher Tax Dues Notice

NDTV India’s tax woes continue. The news network which has been under the taxman’s scanner, received another order from the department raising the alleged tax dues from it. The income tax department had issued an order earlier this year claiming Rs 47.27 crore in unpaid taxes on an investment by Fuse + Media Holding (in the assessment year 2007-2008), calling it a sham transaction. On 20th Sept, NDTV received a revised order from the tax folks saying that it had mistakenly under-computed tax to the tune of Rs 12.71 crore under section 234 B for a lesser period for the same financial year and transaction. Hence, the dues claimable by the tax department stand enhanced by that amount, it says. Parsekar to meet CMs of Maha, Karnataka on Mahadayi water issue

October 10, 2016 by Nasheman

mahadayi-river-water

Panaji: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar today said he would meet his Maharashtra and Karnataka counterparts on the issue of Mahadeyi river water diversion, notwithstanding reservations voiced by opposition parties in Goa.

“I will be attending the meeting with Chief Ministers from Maharashtra and Karnataka on Mahadeyi water diversion issue. It is not proper to refuse the tribunal’s (Mahadeyi Water Dispute Tribunal) suggestion that we (all three CMs) should meet and try to find an amicable solution,” Parsekar said.

He was speaking to reporters after chairing an all-party meet called by the state government on the issue at the Secretariat this afternoon.

The meet was attended by all parties, including BJP, MGP, Congress, NCP, Goa Forward and others, besides Union AYUSH Minister Sripad Naik, Member of Parliament (South) Narendra Sawaikar and representatives of Mahadeyi Bachao Abhiyan.

During the meeting, the opposition parties expressed apprehension over Parsekar attending the CMs’ meet.

“All the participants in the meeting were unanimous that we should not waste time in discussion with neighbouring states as it will affect the pace of the case,” Parsekar said.

“But it is not fair that I refuse to meet the chief ministers of the states of our own country,” he reasoned.

Goa is currently embroiled in a dispute with Maharashtra and Karnataka over diversion of Mahadeyi river water. The case is pending before Mahadeyi Water Dispute Tribunal.

“Whenever it is called for, I will attend the meeting to respect sentiments of the tribunal, but I will ensure that the interest of the state (Goa) will not be compromised at any cost,” the chief minister said.

Asked if Goa is looking for an amicable solution to the issue, Parsekar refused to comment.
“I have said what I want to say,” he said, before walking off.

Meanwhile, the state’s main opposition party Congress expressed unhappiness over the Chief Minister’s decision to meet his Maharashtra and Karnataka counterparts.

“Karnataka has shown scarce respect for law. They have gone ahead with the construction of canal to divert the Mahadeyi river water in their territory. To hold meeting with their (Karnataka) chief minister when the case is pending before the tribunal will be of no use,” Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Luizinho Faleiro told reporters after emerging from the all party meeting.

Faleiro said Mahadeyi river is not just connected to Maharashtra and Karnataka but the biodiversity, environment and flora and fauna of Goa is dependent on it.

“For us, it (diversion of water) is a question of survival. Mahadeyi is the lifeline of Goa. We are pushed to the wall by Karnataka. Besides the tribunal, Goa should take up the matter with the United Nations, National Green Tribunal and Supreme Court,” said the former chief minister of Goa.

He said there are no powers with the chief ministers of any state to do anything on the issue.

“We requested him not to go, but even if he is going, he should ensure that the interest of the state is protected. Everybody felt that CM should not go,” Faleiro said.

“We (participating parties) said, if you (CM) are going then ask them (Karnataka) to demolish the dams which they have constructed illegally, ask them (Karnataka) to stop diverting water,” he said.

Faleiro said half of the Mahadeyi river, known as Mandovi in Goa, has saline water, but if dams are constructed upstream, the entire stretch in the state would become saline.

VHP goon in burqa held for molesting women

October 10, 2016 by Nasheman

vhp

Allahabad: A VHP activist, along with his business associate, was thrashed and handed over to the police for allegedly donning a burqa and sneaking into a gathering of women at a place of worship, a charge denied by the brother of the accused who claimed that it was a fabricated case.

The incident took place at Umarpur village in Mauaima police station area of the district’s trans-Ganga region, about 40 kms from the city, yesterday.

Abhishek Yadav and his business partner Atif had visited an Imambara where a function in the run up to Moharram was being held, police station in-charge Satinder Singh said.

He said Yadav, whose wife is a member of the Zila Panchayat, had reached the venue allegedly wearing a burqa which enabled him to sit close to the women.

An outcry ensued when some people caught a glimpse of his jeans and sports shoes underneath the burqa, following which the men present at the Imambara ripped off his burqa and beat him up besides thrashing Atif who had tried to intervene.

According to Singh, Yadav, who was an active member of the VHP, has been booked in the past for rioting and creating communal disturbances. A case was registered against him yesterday and IPC sections for similar offences yesterday.

Meanwhile, a cross-complaint has been lodged by Yadav’s brother Veersen who has alleged that “Abhishek and Atif were waylaid close to the Imambara by a group of marauders who brutally assaulted the duo and snatched away their valuables before dragging them to the police station and fabricating a story”.

“Those who attacked Abhishek nursed a grouse against him because of his association with the VHP and a thriving business of ready made garments and sports goods,” he said.

“They made him wear a burqa after beating him up, clicked his photographs and posted the same on social media to create the false impression that he was trying to create communal disturbances at a place of worship,” Yadav’s brother alleged.

Police is investigating allegations made by both sides. Yadav and Atif have been admitted to a hospital for treatment, and adequate deployment of forces have been made in the village as a precautionary measure, the police station in charge said.

Karnataka govt decides to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on Nov 10

October 7, 2016 by Nasheman

TIPU

Bengaluru: Last year’s controversies surrounding Tipu Jayanti celebrations have not put down hopes of the state government and it is preparing to hold the celebrations this year too. This year Tipu Jayanthi will be celebrated on November 10.

This year the government has handed over the responsibility of holding celebrations to the Department of Kannada and Culture. Moreover, in a bid to make the event a low-key affair, the celebrations are likely to be held at Ravindra Kalakshetra instead of Vidhana Soudha.

In-charge Secretary, Department of Kannada and Culture, SR Umashankar said that a sum of Rs 60 lakh had been set aside for organizing the celebrations in all districts. The date for celebrations was decided after consulting historians as there was confusion over Tipu’s birthday.

Last year when the government decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanti, chaos broke out in Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts and the violence that followed caused three deaths.

Pakistan train bombing: Deaths in Balochistan attack

October 7, 2016 by Nasheman

At least six killed and 19 wounded after two blasts hit passenger train in southwestern province, officials say.

balochistan

by Al Jazeera

At least six people have been killed and 19 wounded after two explosions targeted a passenger train in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, according to officials.

Friday’s twin blasts hit the Rawalpindi-bound Jaffar Express as it passed near the village of Mach, about 65km southeast of the provincial capital of Quetta.

“The explosions damaged two passenger carriages and killed six people besides wounding 19 others,” Imtiaz Ahmad, a senior local Pakistan Railways official, told AFP news agency, updating an earlier toll of three deaths.

The attack was claimed by the separatist Baloch Liberation Army, according to AFP.

A spokesman for the group said the bombing had targeted “military personnel who travel to Rawalpindi by this train”.

Kashif Akhtar, a senior railways official, told Reuters that security forces foiled a similar attack on Thursday as an attacker laid explosives on a railway track near Quetta.

Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique denounced the bombing as “an act of terrorism” and said authorities were still trying to determine how the bomb was planted on the train.

For more than a decade, Balochistan has been the scene of low-intensity attacks by separatist Baloch groups who want autonomy or outright independence.
