Nobel Peace Prize 2016: Colombia’s Santos named winner

October 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Colombia president awarded one of world’s most prestigious prizes for efforts to end 52 years of war with FARC rebels.

Santos has brought Colombia's bloody conflict significantly closer to a peaceful solution, said the Nobel committee [Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Efforts by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos to end five decades of war in his country were recognised with the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

The award came despite a shock referendum defeat for a proposed peace deal Santos had reached last month with FARC chief Rodrigo Londono, also known as Timoleon “Timochenko” Jimenez, after nearly four years of talks.

Santos was awarded the prestigious prize “for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end”, said Kaci Kullmann Five, chairwoman of the The Norwegian Nobel Committee.

“There is a real danger that the peace process will come to a halt and that civil war will flare up again. This makes it even more important that the parties, headed by President Santos and FARC guerrilla leader Rodrigo Londono, continue to respect the ceasefire,” she said.

In a televised address from the Colombian capital Bogota, Santos declared: “I infinitely appreciate this honorable distinction with all my heart.

“I receive it not in my name, but in the name of all Colombians, especially to the millions of victims left by this conflict that we have suffered for more than 50 years. Colombians, this prize is yours.”

Flanked by his wife Maria Clemencia Rodriguez, Santos called on his countrymen to support the peace process, “and start to construct a stable and long lasting peace.”

Following the committee’s announcement, FARC leader Londono, who was left out of the 2016 award, said that he only wants peace and not a Nobel prize.

“The only prize to which we aspire is that of peace with social justice for a Colombia without paramilitarism, without retaliation nor lies,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account after the award went only to Santos.

The Colombian civil war between the government and the Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has claimed more than 220,000 lives and displaced almost five million people during half a century of conflict.

‘A welcome shock’

On Sunday, slightly more than 50 percent of Colombian voters ticked “No” on their ballots which asked whether they supported the terms of the September 26 peace deal. Opponents of the deal believed the truce accord was too lenient on the rebels.

Al Jazeera’s Alessandro Rampietti, reporting from Colombia’s capital, Bogota, said the decision to award the prize to Santos would come as an unexpected but welcome result.

“I don’t think Colombians would have accepted” if the prize was jointly awarded to FARC rebels given the referendum result, Rampietti said.

“It works as an encouragement for peace … to encourage the entire process,” he added.

Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons, reporting from London, also described Santos’ win as “something of a surprise.

“It’s been decided by the judges that he has done a remarkable job in showing some light at the end of a long, very bloody, awful tunnel with this 52-year conflict with the leftist rebels of FARC,” said Simmons.

Stiff competition

Santos won in a competitive year, with a record 376 candidates vying for the award.

Of the candidates, 228 were individuals and 148 were organisations. The previous record was set in 2014, with 278 nominations.

Santos beat competition from individuals and groups including: Pope Francis; the Syrian White Helmets; German Chancellor Angela Merkel; doctor Denis Mukwege, Jean Nacatche Banyere, Jeannette Kahindo Bindu – a DRC group working with survivors of sexual violence; Russian activist Svetlana Gannushkina; the people who negotiated the Iranian nuclear deal; whistle-blower Edward Snowden; and Greek islanders who work to help refugees when they arrive from perilous journeys across the Mediterranean.

“I think it’s interesting that the committee has once again concentrated on a big leader. It was President Santos, not everybody involved in peace, that was awarded,” Mike Harris, head of 89up – an agency that advises NGOs – told Al Jazeera.

The US State Department considers FARC a foreign “terrorist” organisation.

“My personal favourite was The White Helmets, a grassroots group in Syria who are doing volunteer action on the ground in rebel-held areas,” added Harris.

Underlining the difficulty of predicting the winner, last year’s prize went to four Tunisian groups who were instrumental in the country’s transition to democracy – none of whom had been mentioned in any of the pre-announcement speculation.

Santos joins a list of 129 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates including US President Theodore Roosevelt; three-time recipient International Committee of the Red Cross; US civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr; South African President Nelson Mandela; and Yemeni activist Tawakkol Karman.

The prize was first awarded in 1901.

Law panel seeks public views on uniform civil code, triple talaq

October 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Triple talaq

New Delhi: Should the practice of triple talaq be abolished and whether a uniform civil code should be optional, the Law Commission on Friday has asked the public seeking its response on these sensitive issues broached perhaps for the first time.

Amid a raging debate on uniform civil code, the law panel has sought public views on the subject to revise and reform family laws, saying the aim is to address social injustice rather than the plurality of laws.

In an appeal issued on Friday, the Commission said the objective behind the endeavour is to address discrimination against vulnerable groups and harmonise the various cultural practices even as it assured the people that the “norms of no one class, group or community will dominate the tone and tenor of family law reforms”.

In an accompanying questionnaire, the Commission has asked whether the existing personal laws and customary practices need codification and whether it would benefit people.

Should the practice of triple talaq be abolished, retained or retained with suitable amendments; and whether a uniform civil code should be optional are among 16 queries by the commission.

It has also sought to know whether the uniform code should include subjects like divorce, marriage, adoption, child custody, succession and inheritance.

It has asked people and stakeholders as to whether a common code would infringe an individual’s right to freedom of religion.

“The Commission hopes to begin a healthy conversation about the viability of a uniform civil code and will focus on family laws of all religions and the diversity of customary practices, to address social injustice rather than plurality of laws,” law panel chairman Justice B S Chauhan (retd) said.

He said responding to the demands of social change, the panel will consider the opinions of all stakeholders and the general public to ensure that the “norms of no one class, group or community dominate the tone and tenor of family law reforms”.

Justice Chauhan said in the appeal that the family law reform has to view women’s rights as an end in itself rather than a matter of constitutional provision, religious right, and political debate.

Indicating the need for wider consultation before taking a call on a uniform civil code, the government had in June asked the Law Commission to examine the issue.

Implementation of a common code is part of the BJP’s election manifesto.

The move asking the law panel to examine the issue assumes significance as the Supreme Court had recently said it would prefer a wider debate, in public as well as in court, before taking a decision on the constitutional validity of ‘triple talaq’, which many complain is abused by Muslim men to arbitrarily divorce their wives.

However, a section of Muslim leaders has opposed any move to abolish triple talaq and other personal laws.

Won’t support use of Army in political propaganda: Rahul Gandhi

October 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Facing flak for his ‘dalali’ remarks on surgical strikes, Rahul Gandhi today said he has “unequivocally” supported the military action but is against the use of army in political posters and propaganda by BJP.

“I fully support the surgical strikes and I have said so unequivocally, but I will not support using the Indian Army in political posters and propaganda all across the country,” the Congress vice president said in a series of tweets.

He had yesterday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of “hiding behind the blood of soldiers” and said that he was politically exploiting their sacrifices.

“Jinhone Hindustan ke liye surgical strike kiye hain, unke khoon ke peeche aap chhupe hain. Unki aap dalali kar rahe ho. Yeh bilkul galat hai. {You (Modi) are hiding behind the blood of soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir and those who carried out the surgical strikes for India. You are exploiting their sacrifices, which is very wrong},” Rahul had said.

His ‘dalali’ barb has drawn strong reaction from BJP which called it “a new low in Indian politics”. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and other parties have also criticised the Congress leader’s remarks.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Digvijay Singh lashed out at the BJP leadership, alleging that they were touting the surgical strike on terror launchpads along the LoC as if they did it themselves instead of the army men.

“Modi-Amit Shah Parrikar and BJP Leaders are going around as if they have done the Surgical Strike! Give our Army & our Braveheart the Credit,” Singh tweeted.

Rahul had made the remarks yesterday while addressing a rally here, marking the culmination of his month-long ‘Deoria to Delhi kisan yatra’ in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.

Ghatana Censor Done

Nithya Menen-starrer 22 Female Kottayam is dubbed into Telugu as Ghatana. The same is directed by Sripriya. Director Sripriya says, “This is my 2nd film in Telugu after Drushyam. The film drives home the message that women are not weak but powerful as a goddess. What a woman does when something observed in the society happens to her, is the subject. Nithya Menen has given a terrific performance.” Raj Kandukuri averred, “The film’s subject is very different. This is a subject nobody has touched upon in the past. The film deals with the subject of what problems women who go abroad to find jobs as nurses face. A woman was the apt one to deal with such a female-oriented subject.”

Dalit beheaded by caste Hindus for using flour mill

October 7, 2016 by Nasheman

caste

Dehradun/Pithoragarh: A 35-year-old Dalit man was beheaded allegedly by a primary school teacher, who accused him of rendering “impure” a flour mill by using it before the upper caste villagers in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district, a senior police officer said today.

Sohan Ram died when he was assaulted with a sickle by Lalit Karnatak after he protested an insulting remark against his caste, Bageshwar SP Sukhbir Singh told PTI on phone.

The accused, who belong to an upper caste, was arrested yesterday and sent to Almora jail this morning, the SP said, adding that he was charged with murder and under provisions of the SC and ST (Prevention Of Atrocities) Act.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Kadaria village of Bageshwar bordering Pithoragarh. The victim Sohan had gone to a flour mill owned by Kundan Kumar Singh to take back his wheat flour, the SP said.

When Lalit, who teaches at a primary school in a neighbouring village, saw Sohan at the flour mill, he made an insulting remark on his caste, saying the flour mill had been “rendered impure” by him.

As Sohan protested, Lalit attacked him with a sickle on the neck in a fit of rage, beheading him.

According to villagers, both Dalits and upper castes had been using the mill. But in view of the ongoing Navratri festival the upper castes had issued a diktat to the Dalit families to use the mill only after flour has been prepared for offering to deities.

Smriti Irani degree row: Delhi Court asks EC to authenticate her certificates

October 6, 2016 by Nasheman

smriti-irani-degrees

New Delhi: A court here on Thursday asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to file a certificate to authenticate the election affidavits filed in court by Union Minister Smriti Irani on her educational qualifications.

Metropolitan Magistrate Harvinder Singh asked the ECI to send an official along with a certificate after observing that the affidavits exhibited in court were a copy of the electronic record available on the commission’s website.

The court adjourned the matter to October 15.

The Election Commission had earlier submitted documents that were a copy of the file extracted from its official website.

At that time, the commission told the court that Irani’s original 2004 election affidavit was misplaced, the complainant’s counsel told the media outside court.

The court was hearing a private complaint by Ahmer Khan, who accused Irani of submitting varying details about her educational qualifications in her three affidavits filed before the Election Commission for the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha polls held in 2004, 2011 and 2014.

Khan, who filed the complaint in April last year, sought action against Irani on charge of lying on oath about her educational qualifications.

His counsels K.K. Manan and Anjali Rajput alleged that the BJP leader declared herself to be a 1996-batch graduate from Delhi University’s School of Correspondence in her affidavit filed for the 2004 Lok Sabha election from Delhi’s Chandni Chowk constituency.

But in her affidavit for the 2014 Lok Sabha election, when she contested from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, she allegedly said she did her B.Com. (Part I) in 1994 from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning.

Khan said that in yet another affidavit filed on July 11, 2011, for the Rajya Sabha election from Gujarat, she said her highest educational qualification was B.Com (Part I) from Delhi University’s School of Correspondence.

Saudi Arabia’s Lubna Al Olayan is the most powerful woman in the Arab world: Forbes

October 6, 2016 by Nasheman

Al Olayan also appears on Forbes’ list of the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women”. (World Economic Forum)

Al Olayan also appears on Forbes’ list of the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women”. (World Economic Forum)

by Al Hilal

Saudi Arabia’s Lubna Al Olayan, who’s at the head of a family empire, tops the Forbes Middle East’s list of “The Most Powerful Women in the Arab World” this year.

The list, released for the fifth consecutive year, highlights the region’s most influential and inspiring businesswomen.

Al Olayan also appears on Forbes’ list of the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women”.

Of the 100 women on the “The Most Powerful Women in the Arab World” list, 54 are corporate executives, 23 are at the helm of family businesses, 12 are entrepreneurs, and 11 work in government organisations.

In addition, Forbes has two smaller rankings, 10 each, of women who hold ministerial posts, and women of Arab origin who have made a mark on the world stage.

To rank the leaders, the magazine applied the following metrics: position, size of company or organization, and sphere of impact.

Egypt, Arab World’s most populous country, continued to lead with the highest number of entries with 18, followed by the UAE with 17 and Kuwait and Lebanon with 11 entries each.

The top 10 on the list are:

1. Lubna Al Olayan, CEO, Olayan Financing (Saudi Arabia);

2. Lobna Helal, deputy governor, Central Bank of Egypt (Egypt);

3. Raja Easa Al Gurg, managing director, Al Gurg Group (UAE);

4. Fatima Al Jaber, Group CEO, Al Jaber Group Construction (UAE);

5. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chair, Qatar Museums (Qatar);

6. Maha Al Ghunaim, vice chair and Group CEO, Global Investment House (Kuwait);

7. Shaikha Al Bahar deputy group CEO, NBK (Kuwait);

8. Mona Almoayyed, managing director, YK Almoayyed & Sons (Bahrain);

9. Nezha Hayat, chair, Moroccan Capital Market Authority (Morocco);

10. Khawla Al-Asadi, director general, Rafidain Bank (Iraq).

Khuloud Al Omian, editor-in-chief of Forbes Middle East, said: “In the past four years we have seen a constant increase in women holding senior level positions in businesses. This is contrary to the popular perception about Arab women in the business world. Such recognition will further boost encouragement and inspire more women to break the norm and achieve great successes in their line of business.”

There have been a lot of major developments for these iconic Arab Women. For example, Eaman Al Roudhan, who was the chief regulatory officer of Zain Group last year, has been promoted to CEO. In June Khawla Al-Asadi was appointed director general of Iraq’s biggest bank, Rafidain Bank.

“This is our small way of supporting women with high ambitions to achieve great heights in their careers,” added Omian.

The actor had yesterday said that he would play the character of ‘Maricha’ in the programme.

The organisers had to cancel the programme after the activists approached them and expressed their displeasure over Nawazuddin’s participation, he added.
