Ishaat Hussain replaces Cyrus Mistry as TCS chairman

November 10, 2016 by Nasheman

ishaat-hussain

Mumbai: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Thursday announced that Ishaat Hussain will be the new Chairman of the board of directors of the company in place of Cyrus Mistry with immediate effect.

Tata Sons has also issued a special notice under Section 169 (read with Section 115) of the Companies Act, 2013, and made a requisition for an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders to consider the removal of Mistry as a director of TCS.

“Hussain shall hold office as Chairman of the company until a new chairman is appointed in his place,” the company said in a regulatory filing.

Tata Sons had removed Mistry, 48, as chairman of Tata Sons last month saying he had lost the confidence of the board due to several factors and that the trustees were increasingly concerned with the growing trust deficit.

Ratan Tata, who had made room for Mistry four years ago, was reinstated as the chair in an interim capacity.

Hussain, 69, took over as director finance of Tata Sons in July 2000. Earlier, he joined the board as an executive director in July 1999. He is also a director of several Tata firms — Tata Industries, Tata Steel and Voltas. Besides, he is the chairman of Voltas and Tata Sky.

Prior to joining Tata Sons, Hussain was senior vice president and executive director of finance at Tata Steel for almost 10 years. He joined the board of the Indian Tube Company (a Tata Steel associate) in 1981 and moved to Tata Steel in 1983 after the company was merged with Tata Steel.

A chartered accountant by training from Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, he graduated in economics from St. Stephens College in New Delhi.

Long queues at banks to exchange old notes

November 10, 2016 by Nasheman

old-notes

New Delhi: Long queues were seen outside banks across the country and also at RBI counters for replacement of old Rs 500 and 1,000 notes as banks opened today after demonatisation of such bills by the government on Tuesday.

Following the decision, banks were shut yesterday to stock lower denomination cash and new security-featured Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes. Banks have made additional arrangements for exchanging cash and deposit of old high denomination notes in order to handle heavy rush.

Banks have been asked to be open on weekends including Sunday to deal with the situation. It may be noted that ATMs are not functional today.

In order to meet the demand of new currency notes, the government has imposed a limit on withdrawal of Rs 10,000 per day and Rs 20,000 per week. This limit, however, will be increased in the coming days.

People have been allowed to exchange old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 at any bank or head post office or sub-post office with a daily limit of Rs 4,000 while showing ID proof up to November 24.

Withdrawal from ATM will be a restricted to Rs 2,000 per day per card in the first few days, which will later be raised to Rs 4,000 later.

People, however, can deposit the old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in banks or post office accounts from November 10, till December 30, 2016 without any limit.

Note ban: Depositing cash above Rs 2.5L to face tax, 200% penalty on mismatch

November 10, 2016 by Nasheman

Black money

New Delhi: Further dangling the stick, government last night warned that cash deposits above Rs 2.5 lakh threshold under the 50-day window could attract tax plus a 200 percent penalty in case of income mismatch.

“We would be getting reports of all cash deposited during the period of November 10 to December 30, 2016, above a threshold of Rs 2.5 lakh in every account. The (tax) department would do matching of this with income returns filed by the depositors. And suitable action may follow,” Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said.

Any mismatch with income declared by the account holder will be treated as a case of tax evasion. “This would be treated as a case of tax evasion and the tax amount plus a penalty of 200 percent of the tax payable would be levied as per the Section 270(A) of the Income Tax Act,” he said.

The government has allowed citizens to deposit in their bank accounts old currency of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations, which had been declared invalid in the nation’s biggest crackdown on black money, corruption and counterfeit notes, between November 10 and December 30.

Adhia said small businessmen, housewives, artisans and workers who had some cash lying as their savings at home should not be worried about any tax department scrutiny. “Such group of people… need not worry about such small amount of deposits up to Rs 1.5 or 2 lakh since it would be below the taxable income. There will be no harassment by the Income Tax Department for such small deposits made,” he said.

On people resorting to buying of jewelery, he said persons buying jewelery has to provide the PAN number. “We are issuing instructions to the field authorities to check with all the jewellers to ensure this requirement is not compromised. Action will be taken against those jewellers who fail to take PAN numbers from such buyers. When the cash deposits of the jewellers would be scrutinised against the sales made, whether they have taken the PAN number of the buyer or not will also be checked,” he added.

Banks to remain open this Saturday Sunday; new notes from Nov 10

November 9, 2016 by Nasheman

new-notes-india

New Delhi: Having junked 86 per cent of total currency in circulation with the demonitisation decision, government today sought to assuage anxious public saying banks and post offices would start giving out high denomination replacement notes from tomorrow even as it expanded the list of exempt public utilities.

Besides, it expanded the list of areas where the withdrawn notes will be accepted till November 11 midnight. They include payments for metro rail tickets, highway and road toll, purchase of medicines on doctor prescription from government and private pharmacies, LPG gas cylinders, railway catering and ASI monuments entry tickets.

A 72-hour relaxation for use of such notes was given yesterday for government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing counters at airports, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps.

Banks and ATMs were shut today to remove old Rs 500/1000 notes and stock them with lower denomination and new hard-to- fake Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 currency notes. Banks will open tomorrow as RBI has sent truckloads of new notes throughout the country, while some ATMs will begin dispensing cash.

“Through RBI’s currency chest, adequate currency is (being) provided in all banks and post offices. But it would require 2-3 weeks for full adequate replacement. It would begin tomorrow morning,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters here.

Withdrawal limitations – Rs 2,000 a day from ATM per card and Rs 10,000 through bank account on a day and Rs 20,000 in a week, will continue for some time, he said. “As and when more currency comes into banking system, there will be a rethink on those limitations.”

Officials said that while honest tax payers as well as housewives and farmers with genuine savings have nothing to worry if they deposit old currencies in their bank accounts and take out replacement ones, tax authorities would keep a close watch on high-value deposits made from illicit sources, black money or crime money.

Housewives, farmers and those whose annual income is within the tax exemption limit may not be hounded by tax authorities for depositing up to Rs 2.5 lakh of the now- defunct higher denomination currency notes in bank accounts.

“It should be clear that it is no immunity scheme. This (deposit) does not provide any relief from taxation. The law of land will apply (on source of fund),” he said. “If the money is legitimate which had been previously withdrawn from bank or earned legally and saved and had been disclosed, there is nothing to worry about”.

Donald Trump beats Hillary Clinton to win US presidency

November 9, 2016 by Nasheman

New York businessman and former reality TV star clinches victory over Clinton after long and divisive election campaign.

[Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Donald Trump is the next president of the US after a long, bitter and divisive election campaign.

Projections early on Wednesday showed that Trump clinched victory over Hillary Clinton to become the 45th US president-elect after securing the 270 electoral votes needed to win.

Speaking to his supporters in New York after clinching victory, Trump said that Clinton had congratulated him on his win.

“I have just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us on our victory … and I congratulated her and her family on a very very hard-fought campaign.”

Trump said it was “time for us to come together”, pledging to be president “for all Americans”.

Clinton’s campaign team said the Democratic candidate would speak on Wednesday morning.

Al Jazeera’s James Bays, reporting from New York, described the result as “a political bombshell that we haven’t seen in modern history”.

The 2016 US election caught the attention of hundreds of millions around the world with dramatic moments in the campaign grabbing headlines for more than a year.

Trump was seen as the least probable candidate to win in what was an extremely a tight race. A former reality TV star, he announced his candidacy in June 2015.

Since then, the billionaire businessman from New York has consistently alienated minority groups, refused to release his tax returns and remained seemingly unapologetic for leaked tapes in which he brags about sexually assaulting women.

Global markets fell as the projected results emerged amid fears that a Trump presidency could cause financial turmoil.

The dollar lost value against other currencies, and the Mexican peso saw its steepest dive in more than 20 years, plummeting 8 percent at one point. Oil futures also declined.

Clinton had a slim lead in the polls but no one was ruling out a Trump victory.

A polling average by tracker site RealClearPolitics gave Clinton a 3.3-percentage point national lead.

The 69-year-old former first lady, senator, and secretary of state – who was backed by incumbent President Barack Obama – on Monday urged the country to unite and vote for “a hopeful, inclusive, big-hearted America” in her last effort to woo voters.

Trump pressed his message with voters who feel left behind by globalisation and social change, wrapping up with a flourish on his protectionist slogan of “America first”.

Promising to end “years of betrayal,” tear up free trade deals, seal the border, halt the drug trade and subject Syrian refugees to “extreme vetting”, Trump told his supporters in New Hampshire: “I am with you and I will fight for you and we will win.”

Clinton had pushed a more optimistic vision, despite a wobble in the final weeks of her campaign when the FBI reopened an investigation into whether she had put US secrets at risk by using a private email server – only to close the probe again on Sunday.

The email investigation allowed Trump to recover ground lost in a series of recent scandals.

As Trump celebrated his victory in New York, congratulations from world leaders poured in, with Egypt and Russian among the first nations to reach out to the president-elect.

The Kremlin said in a statement that Russian President Vladimir Putin was hoping to work with Trump to improve relations.

Putin “expressed hope for mutual work on bringing US-Russia relations out of their critical condition as well as on working out outstanding issues on the international agenda” in his congratulatory telegram, the Kremlin said.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi spoke to Trump by telephone, seeking to foster closer diplomatic ties, an Egyptian presidency statement said.

“The US President-elect Donald Trump expressed his utmost appreciation to the president, pointing out that his was the first international call he had received to congratulate him on winning the election,” the statement said.

Binali Yildirim, Turkish prime minister, expressed hopes that bilateral ties would strengthen under new US leadership.

The government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has had strained relations with Barack Obama’s Democratic administration but Yildirim welcomed in the new Republican flagbearer.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a statement that he “congratulates the elected American president, Donald Trump, and hopes that peace will be achieved during his term”.

An Abbas aide, Saeb Erekat, said he does not expect US positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to change under Trump.

Erekat said the Republican and Democratic parties are both committed to a two-state solution of the conflict and “I think this will not change with the coming administration”.

“I Struggled for 11 years before I got Prem Ankat.” – Datta Mirkutte

November 8, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

prem-sankat

Director Datta Mirkute has made his debut as a 1st time director in a Marathi film named Prem Sankat which got released on 14th Oct, 2016 and the distributors Drishyam Films had booked more than 100 cinemas all over Mumbai & Maharashtra. Meet Datta Mirkute who waited for almost more than a decade for wielding the megaphone.

First things first tell us about your struggling phase before you got a break as an independent director?

To be very frank I had to struggle for almost 11 years before I could become an independent director. I started making my rounds to production offices for work and one common friend introduced me to one of the production managers of Balaji Tele Films. I was called everyday at 9 am to the office of Balaji and I used to wait out till 6 pm every day for at least 1 month. Then I was called in the office at 9 pm one day by the production manager who told me to watch the shooting of several serials made by Balaji. I was not paid any money but was given food on the sets.

And what happened then?

Then I joined director Rajiv Ruia and worked as his assistant in 3 films namely Chor Bazaari, Direct Ishq and one Marathi serial YUDH. But it was director Dinesh Anand of Mr & Mrs. Unwanted who indeed took me very seriously and taught me the left & right of camera as well as varied other angles while taking a shot and I became fully trained.

Please Continue!

And then a producer named Yuvraj Surwade, a business man from Mulund wanted to make a Marathi film and once again I was introduced to him and his wife Diksha Surwade by a common friend. I narrated to him the story of a boy who loves a girl and how the villain wants to enter her life and destroys the family of the boy. The girls also loses her memory and how she regains her memory as well as the love of the hero which is told in a gripping & emotional manner. The producer called his other family members, well wishers for another narration and everybody liked this subject. Thus, I got my 1st chance to direct a Marathi film named Prem Sankat.

So how was the experience of directing your debut directorial film Prem Sankat?

We went to Silvassa for the shooting of the film for 25 days and I completed the entire shooting in one non – stop shooting stint. I prefer to shoot the entire film in one shooting spell as it helps the producer to save both money & time. If I had 2 or 3 schedules, then getting the combined dates of busy actors like Nishigandha Wad & Satish Pulekar who play the parents of the hero Raj Surwade could have been difficult and the film would have been delayed a lot. In Marathi films, normally the budgets are very tight and the producer can not afford a wastage of even a single rupee as ultimately he has also to release the film himself by putting another 40 to 50 lakhs of rupees to get the P & A and booking the cinemas which is the toughest part nowadays. Luckily for me & the producers, we got Drishyam Films who are experienced people of the distribution section and they launched a huge publicity campaign for the film 15 days before the release. From 7th Oct, onwards, Zee Music telecast all the six songs of the film. Music director Vishal Wankhede has given me very peppy musical score and they will be liked by the youth mainly who are the biggest 1st 3 days audiences for Marathi films these days.

What are your expectations from the film Prem Sankat?

The youth will love the sacrifices done by the hero to get his love till the very end of the film. Monalisa Bagal who plays the lady love of the hero Raj Surwade has done a fantastic job. Then the other actors like Rahul Bhise, Ankita Parmar, Damini Dolas, Rajendra Sisatkar, Yatin Kryekar, Latika Gore, Rohini, Satish Pulekar & Nishigandha Wad have also done very well in the supporting cast. Cameraman ravi Bhatt, action master Bunty and editor Sundar Pathuri have gone out of the way to make PREM SANKAT a very big family entertainer.

So what is next in store?.

I have been signed to direct a Hindi film which is again youth based and a love story with action & music which I will launch shortly after the successful run of Prem Sankat.

He surrendered completely and went through everything patiently.”, Says Shabbir Khan. He changed the whole look of Nawazuddin Siddiqui for this role by giving him front curls. Add boots, bling earrings, sunglasses and a leather jacket and voila! Meet Nawaz 2.0…” There’s a lot of romance, apart from the dancing, in this film. I want to play a romantic hero,“ Says Nawaz. While Tiger reunites with his HEROPANTI & BAAGHI director Shabbir Khan, this is Nawaz’s 1st gig with the actor – director duo.“Shabbir makes commercial films but he’s focussed on detailing, doesn’t overdo things on the sets and wants the film to look realistic. I like it when directors don’t play to the galleries,“ Nawaz applauds.

US Presidential election opens across 6 time zones

November 8, 2016 by Nasheman

us-presidential-election

Washington: As Americans go to the polls on Tuesday to elect their 45th president, here’s what to watch out for:

All 50 states and Washington D.C. go to the polls across six different time zones on election day. Thirteen of the states are operating with split time zones.

Depending on the state, polling booths will open between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. local time and close between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. (If a voter is in line when polls close, then he or she gets to vote.)
But it is not just winning the popular vote that counts. The US’ system is a race to secure 270 out of the 538 votes in the electoral college.

Most of the US will have to wait for polling stations to close (typically between 5.30 a.m Wednesday and 6.30 a.m Indian time) for state projections.

One small town, Dixville Notch in New Hampshire, which is keeping alive a tradition of a midnight vote that began in 1960, has declared its result before the polls even open everywhere else.

Once the polls have closed, there will be a projection for each state based on opinion polls taken throughout the day, which are a good indication of the results – but not always correct.

According to CNN, the solid Republican states are: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia and Wyoming.

The lean Republican comprise Georgia, Iowa, Maine 2nd Congressional District, Ohio and Utah.

The solid Democratic states comprise California, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington DC, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Minnesota and New Mexico.

The leans Democratics are Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The Battleground or Swing states (a state where the two major political parties have similar levels of support among voters, important to determine the overall result) are Arizona, Florida, Nevada, Nebraska 2nd Congressional District, New Hampshire and North Carolina,

The results are expected to be known in India by 9.30 a.m. IST on Wednesday morning. That’s when West Coast polls close and history suggests a winner’s declared. It was bang on the hour in 2008, and 15 minutes later in 2012.

Polls begin to close in western states from about 10 p.m. ET — or 8.30 a.m. India time.

Usually by around 11 p.m. ET November 8 on the East Coast it becomes clear that one side has prevailed, although the result could come sooner than that.

All eyes will be on the key battleground state of Virginia, which voted for President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 but was previously solid Republican.

Georgia is another one to watch. The state has voted Republican since 1996, but the party’s margin of victory has eroded in recent elections.

Also expect projections from Indiana, home to Trump running mate Mike Pence, Kentucky, South Carolina and Vermont.

Half an hour later, polls close in two further important states, North Carolina and Ohio, the swing state which has backed the winner at every presidential contest.

By 8 p.m. ET (6.30 a.m. IST), Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Missouri, Alabama, Tennessee and Oklahoma will begin their state projections.

Another half hour later (7 a.m. India time) polls will close in Arkansas, which backed former President Bill Clinton at successive elections in the 1990s, but has voted Republican since 2000.

New York, Colorado, Michigan, Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming and Nebraska might show their projections by now.

Polls close in the biggest electoral prize on the map, California, which is a Democratic stronghold, as well as Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Hawaii — 10.30 p.m. ET or 9 a.m. India time.

Depending on how the electoral college is stacking up, every media outlet could declare the next president of the US.

The president-elect will not actually become the 45th president of the US until January 20, 2017, which is Inauguration Day. The president-elect will place his or her hand on the bible and take the Oath of Office at noon.

From then, the government is in their hands. So is the White House. Usually, the sitting president and their spouse host the incoming-First Couple for tea before the ceremony.

About six hours later, the new First Family moves in.
