Orlando: Scores dead in gay nightclub shooting

June 13, 2016 by Nasheman

President Obama calls attack on gay nightclub in Orlando “an act of terror and an act of hate”.

Fifty people have been killed, including the assailant, and at least 53 injured in an attack inside a gay nightclub in the US state of Florida, authorities said, in the worst mass shooting in US history.

Authorities identified the shooter on Sunday as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old man born in New York with Afghan origins.

Mateen, who was armed with an assault-type rifle and a handgun, was killed in a shootout with at least 11 police officers inside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

Ron Hopper, special FBI agent in charge of the Orlando office, confirmed that Mateen was interviewed twice by the agency in 2013, after he made “inflammatory comments” to co-workers alleging possible “terrorist ties”.

In 2014, authorities interrogated Mateen anew for possible ties to an American suicide bomber.

In both cases, the FBI closed the investigations as they turned out to be “inconclusive” at that time, Hopper said.

Hopper also confirmed media reports that Mateen made 911 calls to police early on Sunday, and referred to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL also known as ISIS) group.

‘Act of terror and hate’

In a televised statement, President Barack Obama condemned the shooting as “an act of terror and an act of hate”, calling the shooter “a person filled with hatred”.

“As Americans, we are united in grief and outrage,” he said, adding that the attack is “a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon” and commit violence in the US.

Orlando Police chief John Mina described the shooting as “one of the worst tragedies we have seen”, adding that police officers “were shaken by what they have seen inside the club”.

“It’s a tragedy not only for the city but the entire nation,” he said. “Just a look into the eyes of our officers told the whole story.”

The injured, many in critical condition, were transferred to nearby hospitals. Among those injured was one police officer, whose kevlar helmet was hit by a round from the suspect.

The suspect exchanged gunfire with a police officer working at the club, which had more than 300 people inside. The gunman then went back inside and took hostages, Mina said.

Around 5am, authorities sent in a SWAT team to rescue the hostages.

While details of the attack were still emerging, Orlando residents gathered outside the nightclub to pay their respects to the victims.

Al Jazeera’s Andy Gallacher, reporting from the scene, described a banner laid out in the streets where people dipped their hands in paint and made their mark. Across the top of the banner was written, “Today our hearts cry out in unity”.

“Just metres away at the Pulse nightclub, a popular venue for the LGBT community, bodies of the victims are still lying where they fell,” our correspondent said. “Many are yet to be identified.”

As the shooting occurred, the nightclub urged patrons to “get out” and “keep running” in a post on its Facebook page.

One witness, who said he was inside the building during the incident, said he heard about 40 shots being fired.

Christopher Hansen said he was in the VIP lounge of the club when he heard gunshots. He continued to hear shooting even after he emerged and police urged people to back away from the club. He saw the wounded being tended to across the street.

“I was thinking, ‘Are you kidding me?’ So I just dropped down. I just said, ‘Please, please, please, I want to make it out,'” he said. “And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don’t get shot.”

Police said they carried out a “controlled explosion” at the club hours after the shooting broke out, while entering the nightclub.

Florida Governor Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in Orlando.

The nightclub shooting came just a day after a man thought to be a deranged fan fatally shot Christina Grimmie, a rising singing star who gained fame on YouTube and as a contestant on The Voice, while she was signing autographs after a concert in Orlando.

“TE3N is an emotionally explosive journey of 3 people”: Amitabh Bachchan

June 13, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

An Exclusive Interaction With Big B At Hotel Novatel In Juhu During The Promotional Event Of TE3N

TE3N

Big B is an institution in himself, an epitome of unparalleled histrionics. Even after having crossed more than 70 summers of his life, he is still full of youth fullness coupled with an unmatched dynamic energy. He is also an active participant on the social media platform with millions of followers on Twitter itself. SHAHEEN RAAJ caught up with him for an exclusive tete – e – tete during his hectic schedule of promoting TE3N at Hotel Novatel. Tune in for an interesting conversation.

Q. Right at the outset how about giving us a brief insight of your characterised role in TE3N?

A. You are right gentleman! My role in TE3N is indeed characterised like me, even John Biswas has crossed more than 70 summers of his life just like me. And there ends the comparison. Actually speaking he does not have a baritone voice like me. In fact he is a middle class retired bureaucrat, who lives with his aged wife Mrs. Biswas in a middle class surrounding. Besides he is not aggressive or a go getter. You can call him a weak looking individual, as far as his features are concerned, he always has this exasperated look on his face.

Q. Please continue Sir!

A. When the film TE3N’s scripted scenario opens, John Biswas is shown as a person gripped with a personal & humane tragedy that has recently happened in his life. And above all the pain & suffering he is just anxious to know the truth about the incident that has occurred in his life and tries in his own way to solve the mysterious happening. Believe it or not but the character of John Biswas has been shaped up in such a way that he speaks very softly; that apart he is a tepid & too insecure kind of a person who does not at all wish to challenge anyone. I have purposely kept the character low key to increase its impact on the cine goers. So my characterised role in TE3N is in sharp contrast to the aggressive person’s role who fights for justice which I have portrayed in countless number of films on the celluloid silver screen.

Q. You have enacted the role of a grandfather in countless number of films and now in TE3N. So what’s the difference?

A. At this age I am surely going to get only matured roles like that of an aged father or a grandfather. But everytime I enact such a role. Its the script writer’s presentation & the director’s executed treatment that makes the whole lot of difference. And to top it I add my own nuances, with a perfect change of mannerisms & body language. The latest examples are my well executed roles in Piku & now in TE3N.

Q. So what according to you is the USP of TE3N?

A. You may find it slightly strange but as per me, my moving about on a unique scooter in the city of Kolkatta is the main USP of the film. And this scooter ride became so popular that its owner was offered one crore rupees for his scooter. Now its an altogether a different matter that he refused the offer. I had a ride on many vehicles earlier. But the ride on this scooter will always remain special for me. And of course I have dabbled with a lot of football game too. That apart the undercurrent mysterious elements can be termed as an extraordinary USP of TE3N.

Q. So what exactly is your latest film TE3N all about?

A. TE3N involves big production houses like Endemol, Reliance Entertainment, Cinemaa, Kross Pictures & Blue Waters Motion Pictures. It is an emotional thriller set in Kolkata. TE3N is about a crime that affects its 3 principal characters. John Biswas, a grandfather on the relentless pursuit of justice since 8 years, Father Martin Das, the role enacted by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, whose life has changed forever by the same crime that claimed the life of John’s granddaughter. Then there is Sarita Sarkar, a special role played by Vidya Balan, the cop who swings into action when an identical crime is repeated 8 years later. So TE3N is the emotionally explosive journey of these 3 above mentioned people, who find their fates intertwined in their quest for justice & redemption. It has an excellent creative team comprising of creative producer Sujoy Ghosh, director Vibhu Dasgupta, scriptwriters Suresh Nair & Bijesh Jayarajan, dialogue writer Ritesh Shah, cinematographer Tushar Kanti Ray, music composer Clinton Cerejo & action director Sham Kaushal.

Q. How & by whom was the idea of TE3N conceptualised?

A. To be very frank it was Sujoy Ghosh who came up with a brilliant idea of making a film based in Kerala. Then one day he & Vibhu Dasgupta told me that they had acquired the rights of a Korean film. The moment they narrated it, I felt that it was the right idea to develop into a film. It was initially planned to set the film against the backdrop of Goa but they had problems with permissions. That’s when I suggested Kolkata and they were very excited about it. However since the character was a Goan Christian and had an Anglo connect to it, they changed it to an English character living in Kolkata, except that he does not have the typical nuances of a typical Anglo -Bengali. Post the release of Piku, it was decided that I should not end up sounding like another Bengali. Also, we discovered that the Anglo – Bengalis there are like any other normal Hindi speaking guys.

Q. The movie TE3N has been shot on the actual locations without making any use of constructed sets. How come?

A. Yes! That’s right. The whole film is shot on the actual locations in Kolkata, there are no sets constructed at all, which I would say is an accomplishment of some kind by our cinematographer, Tushar Kanti Ray. There was a time when we would be surrounded by piercing heavy lights & big sharp reflectors, which barely allowed us to open our eyes. It is quite different to be in an environment where you don’t see lights at all but that is what technology has done today. This can also be termed as one of the novel features of TE3N.

Q. And what would you like to say about the novel marketing & promotional strategy used for TE3N?

A. Actually speaking TE3N is not a very big budget film. It does not have big stars and I felt it was futile trying to go overboard with the marketing of the film. For a film like TE3N, you can’t be spending crores of rupees on the marketing of the film, knowing that it is budgeted at a modest Rs 15 – Rs 18 crores. That’s why I felt that the best option was to involve the audiences and get their point of view instead of wasting so much money on the marketing. And the reactions were a bag full of praises & criticism too but you have to understand that in our times, films used to be silver jubilee or golden jubilee hits. Today they run only for 3 days and your money is recovered. If you see a Shah Rukh Khan or a Salman Khan starrer, the budgets run into several crores of rupees. For them it is the 1st 3 day collections that make the film a viable profit model and they require that kind of marketing. The attention span of this generation is very short, they want quick results and it becomes necessary to have aggressive marketing strategies.

Q. What would you like to say about your creative producer Sujay Ghosh & director Vibhu Dasgupta?

A. Both of them are very creative, hardworking & extremely talented and I am really honoured that even at my age they have come up with a very challenging role for me in a well crafted film like TE3N.

Q. Kolkatta seems to be your favourite destination in all aspects & respects. What say?

A. What to say? My 1st job in life was in Kolkata in the year 1962. I had spent almost a year working as an executive here. There’s a very large Anglo – Indian community that resides here and I used to mix up regularly with them because that was part of our existence. I was also connected to the amateur theatre here and the theatre groups had Anglo – Indians too. We were all friends so I was aware of the way they spoke & conducted themselves. Yes it is my favourite destination in all aspects & respects and so I keep coming back to Kolkatta.

Q. What would you like to say about the techno savvy younger generation of director & actors too?

A. I have worked with eminent directors in the earlier phase of my career and now that I am working with the techno savvy younger generation of directors I am learning something new from them each & every day that I work with them. The best part of working with the younger generation of directors today is that they are aware of technology and know how best to tap it. Today the audience taste have changed and they demand something that is slicker and technically more brilliant because they have an opportunity to see all that on television, internet & mobiles too. In that respect, these young film makers are very much focussed. They are aware of the competition and the fact that their content has to be up to the mark. They keep improvising on the technology in order to get outstanding results. Also the talent available is absolutely remarkable. I am stunned at times to see how perfect some of these actors are in their debut outing too. They know where they want to go and provide such amazing outputs. To the extent that I sometimes feel odd to go on the sets when I see these thoroughly prepared actors, but it’s a great joy too. I love being with them, seeing them work and their approach to work. They are very normal & natural in front of the camera. They are quite cool and are perfect in their work too. While content & technology matter a lot these days, funding of films is hardly a problem today, unlike olden days where film makers had to go through a long drawn process for the funding of their films. One of the reasons stars used to take up multiple projects during those days was due to the problems of funding & finance. Those days film makers had to borrow funds and they would get money from the financier to shoot for a week, after which they would show the canned portions to the financier in the hope of getting some more funds. That’s the reason why we used to work in a dozen films and shuttle from one set to another every day because we couldn’t wait till the next finance would come, lest we would be sitting for a long time without work. That problem fortunately does not exist today.

Q. Are there any nostalgic moments that you keep dwelling upon?

A. There are many nostalgic moments in my life that I keep dwelling upon. But in my profession I feel deeply about the sad truth that despite having some of the best film makers in the history of cinema, we have never quite gone out and documented their works. For instance, one would have loved to sit with legendary film makers like K. Asif, Guru Dutt & Raj Kapoor to find out what went on behind the making of some of their best films, how they chose particular camera angles, what was the atmosphere like on their sets and how they coined some of the best dialogues for their films. We only go & look at the films, we have never ever sat with those people and asked them. I hope we seriously start doing something on this front, so that it will be a treasure house of information for film makers in the future.

Q. As a parting shot what would you like to say about your regular social media connect with your fans?

A. Previously we used to wait for fan letters to get reactions. We had fewer opportunities to interact with our fans and the only connect we had with them was when we got a fan mail or went out to public functions. With social media, we have opened the doors to millions & millions of people to interact, talk to them and get a feedback. In my case, it started with a blog when someone came up with a suggestion that I should have an official website of my own, since there were a lot of other illegal sites running under my name. I was told that it would take a period of many months but I was very keen to start something the very next day. That’s how the idea of writing a blog came up. It started with jotting down a few of my thoughts for which I received a great feedback after which I started blogging every day to an extent where people from every region began to keep in touch, interacting and giving their point of view on everything I wrote about. I later gave them the name of my “Extended Family.” I now get 1000’s of responses from my “Extended Family” in India and all over the globe and even from Mumbai to London. They keep in touch with each other too, travel to each other’s towns and even meet me when they come down to Mumbai. It is truly a big family. I started my Facebook & Twitter account soon after. Now I make it a point to tweet every day about something that I strongly feel about. I have been doing so without a break, even when I was in hospital. I know at least 1000’s of my social media followers on a personal level. I think a good deal of my social media friends who are an amazing lot of cinema savvy people and some of them give some great feedback about my films. Their remarks and some of the things that they write are beyond comprehension. There are some brilliant minds out there who look at a film. They even criticise films objectively but their criticism is different from the regular critics. They also offer a comprehensive analysis on why a particular film scored well at the Box Office. I remember Rituji (Nanda), the daughter of Raj Kapoor and also the mother – in – law of my daughter, Shweta, brought out a book on Raj Kapoor, years ago and wanted to update it. I thought about it and was in touch with several other people, who were perceptive about several aspects of Rajji’s life, including his films, politics or entertainment. I had a discussion with them through the blog and they came out with an analysis on him, which I had never quite figured out. I sent this across and they were absolutely delighted. And I can go on & on about my social media interaction with my fans and even reams & reams of papier mache would be in suffice to recount them all.

Caught on cam: Yeddyurappa asks SP not to take action against ‘Hindus’ in murder case

June 13, 2016 by Nasheman

Yeddyurappa

Bengaluru: BJP Karnataka President B S Yeddyurappa has landed in a controversy after a video purportedly showing him telling a police official not to harass some Hindu youths in a murder case in Hassan district went viral.

“You have already arrested 14-15 Hindu youths. A few more are being tortured. Please don’t do such things in future. It won’t be nice, situation in Arsikere may get disturbed, peace may get disturbed,” he is seen speaking to Hassan district Superintendent of Police Rahul Kumar Shahapurwad in the video footage.

Congress Spokesperson Brijesh Kalappa, who posted the video on his Facebook, has accused Yeddyurappa of trying to “influence” the course of investigation into the murder case.

Kalappa also charged that Yeddyurappa was giving a threat to the SP, who was only trying to do his job. As a public servant, the BJP leader was doing a “wrong thing.” “It is a clear indication that Yeddyurappa wants to influence the course of investigation,” he alleged.

Violence had erupted in Arsikere following the murder of 24 year-old Emanuel Varun, who was stabbed to death on 29 May with some shops being attacked in the fallout of the incident. The video of the murder had gone viral.

Police said differences between two groups of youths had led to the murder and there was no communal angle to it.

According to police, Varun’s friend had differences with one of the arrested persons in the murder case regarding running of a gym in the town. When Varun and his friend raised the issue with another person, the latter’s friend allegedly stabbed him.

Eleven people have been arrested in connection with the murder and another 13 over the violence that followed the crime. Among those arrested, a few are said to be associated with Hindu groups.

“We have made all arrests based on the evidence available. We have the video footage of violent incidents in which the arrested accused participated,” the SP said.

A delegation of BJP leaders led by MLC Bhanu Prakash had met Shapurwad recently and complained that police had arrested a few innocent people in the case.

Paes gets Olympic ticket, paired with Bopanna

June 11, 2016 by Nasheman

leander-paes-rohan-bopanna

New Delhi: Veteran Leander Paes today got the nod for his seventh Olympic appearance after the All India Tennis Association (AITA) paired him with Rohan Bopanna for the men’s doubles competition despite the latter’s desire to team up with Saketh Myneni.

Announcing the squad for the Olympics, beginning August 5, AITA chief Anil Khanna said Bopanna will be pairing up with Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles event as had been demanded by the World No.1 in women’s doubles.

Sania will be teaming up with Prarthana Thombare in the women’s doubles event. As was expected, the AITA rejected Bopanna’s request for Myneni as his partner, saying that India’s best chance for a medal at Rio lay in him teaming up with Paes, who won the French Open mixed doubles title earlier this month.

“He (Bopanna) has given reasons to selection committee on why he feels Saketh could be a better doubles partner. But he has also made it clear that he wants to represent the nation. It was a well-meaning letter (which Bopanna wrote yesterday to AITA). Leander and Rohan have played four times in Davis Cup, they have a 2-2 record,” Khanna said.

“Committee decided that the best bet for Indian tennis to win a medal at the Olympics would be Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna,” he added.

Khanna then named Bopanna and Sania as the best medal hopes in the mixed doubles category.

“The committee has decided to nominate Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles competition,” he said.

Voting underway for 27 Rajya Sabha seats, keen contest on cards in U P, karnataka

June 11, 2016 by Nasheman

rajya Sabha

New Delhi: Polling is being held today in the crucial election to 27 Rajya Sabha seats in seven states, with a keen contest on cards in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Haryana.

While 30 of the total 57 seats in the current round of biennial elections to the Upper House have already been decided without a contest, the fate of candidates for the remaining 27 seats will be decided by this evening when the results will be announced.

Polling began at Assembly premises in the state capitals at 9 AM and will continue till 4 PM.

In Haryana, where polling is being held for two seats, Union Minister Birender Singh from BJP is assured of a comfortable win. Independent candidate R K Anand has got the backing of Congress and its rival INLD, making it an uphill task for media baron and BJP-backed Independent candidate Subhash Chandra.

In Uttar Pradesh, where elections are being held to 11 seats, interest is centred around a fight between former union minister Kapil Sibal and BJP-backed independent socialite Preeti Mahapatra.

Sibal will need the support of BSP, which has 12 votes more than necessary for the success of its own candidates Satish Chandra Mishra and Ashok Sidharth.

BSP supremo Mayawati has maintained suspense over her party’s support in Uttar Pradesh. But Sibal can draw heart from the fact that she has already extended backing for a Congress candidate in Madhya Pradesh by promising one vote required for senior Supreme Court lawyer Vivek Tankha, fielded by Congress.

Congress has 29 MLAs and needs the backing of five more to see Sibal through. The ruling SP has fielded seven candidates including Amar Singh and Beni Prasad Verma, who both rejoined the party recently, and Reoti Raman Singh. Its seventh candidate is, however, short of 9 first preference votes. SP has been promised backing by Ajit Singh-led RLD which has 8 MLAs.

The BJP has fielded Shiv Pratap Shukla, who is sure to get elected on its own 41 MLAs, and has offered 7 surplus votes to Mahapatra.

Karnataka, where four seats are up for grab, is poised to witness a battle between the ruling Congress and the JD(S). Union Minister Nirmala Seetharaman of BJP, who needs just one vote more than the party’s strength of 44, and former union ministers Jairam Ramesh and Oscar Fernandes of Congress are sure of victory.

With 122 members, Congress has a surplus of 33 votes after ensuring the victory of Ramesh and Fernandes. It has fielded former senior IPS officer K C Ramamurthy as its third candidate for which it requires 12 more votes.

With 40 members, dissidence-hit JDS is in an unenviable position as five MLAs have virtually raised a banner of revolt amid reports that they might indulge in cross voting to help Congress.

JDS needs five more votes for its candidate B M Farooq, a corporate personality, to sail through but is struggling to keep the herd together. Allegations of bribing JD(S) and Independent MLAs marred the polls in Karnataka though the Election Commission rejected demands for cancelling them.

In Madhya Pradesh, while ruling BJP, which has 164 votes, is assured of victory of its candidates M J Akbar and Anil Dave, a fight is on for its third candidate Vinod Gotia, who faces a tough challenge from Vivek Tankha of Congress, as he needs 10 more than the 48 surplus votes his party has.

A candidate in Madhya Pradesh needs 58 votes for victory. Tankha, whose party Congress has 57 votes, appears comfortably placed after BSP announced the backing of its four MLAs.

Rajasthan is another state where Congress, with 24 MLAs, has forced a contest by backing an Independent candidate Kamal Morarka. A candidate needs 41 votes to win.

With 160 members in Rajasthan Assembly, the BJP is certain of victory of Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, its Vice President Om Prakash Mathur, former RBI official Ram Kumar Sharma and Harsh Vardhan Singh, a member of the erstwhile Dungarpur royal family.

The fourth BJP candidate needs only four more votes to sail through, which the party expects to get from two MLAs of National Unionist Zamindara Party and three Independents.

In Jharkhand also, a close contest is possible where a united opposition can upset the ruling BJP’s calculations. But its first candidate and Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is sure of victory.

The BJP has 43 MLAs on its own and enjoys the support of six more MLAs of its allies.

JMM supremo Shibu Soren’s son Basant is pitted against BJP’s Mahesh Poddar. However, if Congress (6), RJD and rest of the opposition come together and back the JMM candidate, Basant can look at victory.

Uttarkhand, where election is only for one seat, Congress nominee Pradeep Tamta is set to sail through needing just two additional votes apart from his party’s 26 and ally PDF’s six.

Movie Review: ‘Vees Mhanje Vees’ is a thought provoking issue based film

June 11, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Vees Mhanje Vees

Producer: NFDC
Director: Uday Bhandarkar
Star Cast: Mrinmayee Godbole, Rajan Bhise, Shivaji Barve, Ashmit Pathare, Arun Nalawade and child stars Mohit Gokhale, Aditi Devlankar, Mihir Mule, Mrunal Jadhav & Parth Bhalerao

The scripted scenario of Vees Mhanje Vees opens with Shailaja (Mrinmayi Godbole) returning to her Village to restart a school that was closed down due to her Anna’s (Rajan Bhise) sudden illness. In this uphill task her path is strewn with many practical difficulties. Besides the education Board tells her that she should have at least 20 students in her class or the school will be closed down. How Shailaja accomplishes this upheaval task forms the crux of the story.

Director Uday Bhandarkar has succeeded in driving home the point that why should there be a restriction to have at least 20 students in a class for the village school to get recognised. All the veteran actors have given a good account of themselves, but it is indeed all the child actors who have walked away with all the honours.

Some of the over repeated scenes that may test the cine goer’s patience.

Hats off to NFDC for promoting such meaningful art house cinema. Vees Mhanje Vees may garner a lot of critical acclaim in the film festival circuit. But its prospects at the Box Office Turnstiles are very bleak. A good word of mouth may help its run in the interiors.

Movie Review: ‘Duniya Geli Tel Lavat’ is neither for rural nor for urban cine goers

June 11, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Duniya Geli Tel Lavat

Producers: Producer : Pritam Anil Dev, Siddharth Jadhav, Mansi Deshmukh & Girish Oak
Director: Praveen Raja Karle
Star Cast: Siddharth Jadhav, Mansee Deshmukh, Sammeer Sumantt, Yuugg, Dr. Girish Oak, Savita Prabhune, Uday Sabnis, Jayant Wadkar, Yogesh Shinde, Geeta Bagde, Priya Dhande & Supriya Nalwade.
Music: Shrirang Aras

Raja (Siddharth Jadhav) is an innocent village boy living with his mother (Savita Prabhune) & his sister (Geeta Bagde). This mama’s boy always speaks the truth and lands everyone in trouble. So off he goes to Goa to work in his friend Anthony’s (Yogesh Shinde) garage. Later on he meets Priya (Manasee Deshmukh) and they both fall in love. But after a few mishaps Raja starts telling lies and starts conning people left, right & centre. All hell breaks loose which leads to murder & mayhem.

Director Praveen Raja Karle has made the 1st half of Duniya Geli Tel Lavat fairly entertaining but looses his grip in the 2nd half which leads to a lot of confusion. Music composer Shrirang Aras has delivered a few catchy numbers. Siddharth Jadhav in his new avatar & looks, as a leading man, is impressive but looks exhausted due to overwork in some scenes. Mansee Deshmukh adds to the glamour quotient. While the rest of the actors are adequate.

The 2nd half of the film’s plot is totally hackneyed.

Duniya Geli Tel Lavat is neither here nor there. It tries to impress the rural as well as the urban cine goer’s but misses the boat in both the cases.

Movie Review: ‘Warcraft’ is a spectacularly mounted must watch movie

June 11, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Warcraft

Producers: Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Charles Roven, Alex Gartner & Stuart Fenegan
Director: Duncan Jones
Star Cast: Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Robert Kazinsky, Daniel Wu etc

The scripted scenario of Warcraft opens with, looking to escape from his dying world, the orc shaman Gul’dan utilizes dark magic to open a portal to the human realm of Azeroth. Supported by the fierce fighter Blackhand, Gul’dan organizes the orc clans into a conquering army called the Horde. Uniting to protect Azeroth from these hulking invaders are King Llane, the mighty warrior Anduin Lothar and the powerful wizard Medivh. As the two races collide in a duelling warfare, leaders from each side start to question if war is the only answer.

Director Duncan Jones has made a spell binding movie and keeps the viewers hooked till the end and the credit for this also goes to his entire technical team especially those who have handled the camera, the set decor, the costumes, the make – up, the prosthetics, the special effects etc. All the actors have performed well, but a special noteworthy mention must be made of Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell & Daniet Wu.

The hulky beings of the orc’s clan, their features and some of their war scenes with human beings appear so bizzare that it proves to be repulsive to a point of no return.

The last scene of Warcraft in which a hulky female orc places her tiny baby orc in a basket and puts it in a waterfall a la an indian mythology scenario almost spells the return of the franchise of Warcraft.

Whereas on one hand Madhur’s project is still in pre -production stage Pehle Aap Motion Pictures is all set to release their maiden project SAN PACHATTAR , which is based on the era of Emergency.” Emergency period lasted from June 1975 to March 1977 and is one of the darkest periods of Indian history. We learn true lessons of life only from history and I decided to make a film based on some unknown & uncovered events during the period of emergency. The style of editing & background score makes it edgy. It is a very well balanced film keeping both entertainment & sensibilities in place and will teleport you instantly to the 70’s. I remember the great Neil Armstrong quoted – a small step of man on moon and a giant leap for mankind. I would say it’s just ballsy. To do real justice to the role, who better than Kay Kay Menon. He has reinvented it and made the character more dynamic by adding his style & nuances.” says producer Kabir Lovee. It is the first true political thriller of Indian Cinema. I am happy I am a part of this film and played the most layered & myriad character of my career till date. It took me nearly 6 months to get into the skin & psyche of the character and to get the crisis right”, says Kay Kay Menon. The film’s plot revolves around a deal of the 1st mobile phone (prototype) being brought in India with emergency in the background.

ANIL KAPOOR TURNS THE SPOTLIGHT ON CHILD LABOUR

Anil Kapoor will front a new campaign that brings much needed attention to child labour in India. One of the world’s fastest growing economies, India is home to the largest population of child laborers in the world. The actor, who is the Goodwill Ambassador for child rights organization Plan India, will campaign for the NGO’s new initiative to raise awareness and inspire action to pull millions of children out of all forms of labor. “Every morning over 8 million children in India go to work instead of going to school. Our economic progress loses a lot of meaning if hundreds of thousands of children have no hopes of a future,” said Kapoor addressing the media in Mumbai to mark the International Day Against Child Labor, which is commemorated on 12th Jun, 2016. Kapoor added: “Having been associated with Plan India all these years, we’ve been able to improve the lives of over a million children and their families. But there is still a long way to go, and one resounding imperative – child labor & exploitation must end. We are all responsible for coming generations and the world we leave to them. It is time our movement became everybody’s movement.” Kapoor also unveiled an exhibition documenting the lives of children in difficult circumstances at the Atrium, High street Phoenix.
