If God willing, I will enter politics: Rajinikanth

May 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Rajinikanth

Chennai: Superstar Rajinikanth on Monday said he has no political aspirations but will consider taking the path if it’s God’s will. He also said if he enters politics, he will be truthful and won’t entertain people who want to make money.

“God decides what we have to do in life. Right now, he wants me to be an actor and I’m fulfilling my responsibility. If God willing, I will enter politics tomorrow. If I enter, I will be very truthful and will not entertain people who are in this to make money. I won’t work with such people,” Rajinikanth told his fans at a greet-and-meet here.

The 66-year-old star described his brief stint in politics two decades ago as a “political accident”.

In 1996, during Tamil Nadu assembly election campaign, Rajinikanth denounced J. Jayalalithaa and her politics. His strong remarks caused her defeat.

“I did a mistake by supporting a political alliance 21 years ago. It was a political accident. Since then, politicians have misused my name on several occasions. But I have to clarify, I’m not joining any party,” he added.

Addressing a large gathering of his fans, Rajinikanth requested them to refrain from smoking and drinking.

“Take care of your family and children. Don’t waste your life by smoking and drinking. Drinking and smoking not only affects your health but also your decision making ability. I have been affected enough so please take my advice seriously,” he added.

Rajinikanth also confirmed he will commence shooting for his next yet-untitled Tamil project with director Pa. Ranjith from May 28 onwards.

EMPEROR MOTION PICTURE BRINGS BACK RESTORED FILMS

Emperor Motion Picture has picked up sales rights to 2 restored classic films of modern Asian cinema namely Devils On The Doorstep & Ichi The Killer. The Hong Kong -based studio has begun sales on the so -called Cannes version of “Devils,” the black comedy directed by Jiang Wen in 2000. Although Jiang Wen is today celebrated as a cultural icon in China, the film earned him a 7 year directing ban and was also refused a theatrical release in China. The story involves a captured Japanese soldier who is mysteriously billeted on a Chinese village. Jiang Wen’s intention may have been to contradict stereotyped thinking on Chinese passiveness, and knee – jerk assumptions, but his humanistic portrayal of the Japanese prisoner was controversial. Edited versions of the film were given releases in some territories, including Japan in 2002. Those compounded Jiang Wen’s previous fault of having submitted the movie to Cannes – where it won the Grand Prize – without Film Bureau permission. The restored, 162 minute Cannes version, of the film was screened at the Hong Kong festival in 2011, while a shorter version of 140 mins played the HKIFF in 2014.

ICJ hearing: India demands immediate suspension of Jadhav’s death sentence

May 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Kulbhushan Jadhav

The Hague: India fears that Kulbhushan Jadhav could be executed by Pakistan before its arguments are heard, India’s attorney Harish Salve said at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) today.

The Indian national, who had been arrested on March 3 last year and sentenced to death on allegations of espionage and subversive activities, had been framed on the basis of confessional statements extracted from him when he was in Pakistan’s military custody, Salve added.

As the ICJ began hearing Jadhav’s case, India argued that human rights treated as “basics” all over had been thrown to the wind by Pakistan.

We want appropriate legal representation for Jadhav, India told the UN’s main judicial body which has stayed his death sentence.

New Delhi has called for immediate suspension of Jadhav’s death sentence and accused Pakistan of violating the Vienna convention by denying its 16 requests for consular access.

All requests for consular access to 46-year-old Jadhav had fallen on “deaf ears”, it said.

The present situation, Salve said before the court, was grave and that is why India had sought its indulgence. He described Jadhav’s trial process as “farcical” and stressed that Pakistan did not respond to Jadhav’s mother’s plea to see her son.

India is presenting its case first, followed by Pakistan later in the day. Both sides will get 90 minutes each to argue their case.

India may avail a “short extension” to present its case, the judge said in his opening remarks.

India had appealed against the death sentence on May 8 alleging violation of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations by Pakistan. On May 9, ICJ gave Jadhav a lease of life.

India, in its appeal to the ICJ, had asserted that Jadhav was kidnapped from Iran where he was involved in business activities after retiring from the Indian Navy.

However, it denies that he has any connection with the government.

Pakistan claims to have arrested Jadhav from its restive Balochistan province.

The ICJ was last a battleground for India and Pakistan nearly 18 years ago when Islamabad sought its intervention over the shooting down of its naval aircraft.

After his beheading warning to Hurriyat, Zakir Musa quits Hizb

May 13, 2017 by Nasheman

Zakir Musa

Srinagar: Hours after Hizb-ul-Mujahideen statement calling his threat to Hurriyat leaders as “unacceptable”, Zakir Musa dissociated himself from the outfit, saying that he can’t “sacrifice his life for the establishment of a secular state”.

Musa released an audio clip in which he said that he stands by his earlier message.

“After my last audio message, lot of confusion is being spread in Kashmir. I stand by my speech and by my message. It doesn’t bother me what others say, but I stand by my speech. But see I have had not said anything against a particular person or Geelani sahab but I have said only against that individual who is against Islam and talks about freedom for secular state.”

He said if they (militants) were fighting for freedom for secular state, then he thinks that they (militants) were not martyrs.

“I know we have to first fight for freedom and expel Indian army which has occupied us. But our intention should be that we have to achieve ‘azadi’ for Islam, not for secular state. If we are fighting for freedom for secular state then my blood won’t be spilled for that purpose. What I said about hanging was not about Hurriyat leaders but moderates who say after azadi we will make a secular state. Because I know if we get freedom from India then will have to fight those who support secular state.”

Musa said: “So, if Hizbul Mujahideen doesn’t represent me then I also don’t represent them.”

Scores of countries hit by cyber attack using stolen NSA tools

May 13, 2017 by Nasheman

Internet calls

Seattle: Scores of countries and several multinational companies were hit by a massive cyber attack which experts said was carried out with the help of tools stolen from the National Security Agency of the United States.

The cyber attack was first reported from Sweden, Britain and France, but countries like Russia and Taiwan are said to be worst hit, US media outlets reported.

US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (USCRT) under the Department of Homeland Security said it has received multiple reports of WannaCry ransomware infections in many countries around the world.

It however, did not identify the countries.

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that infects a computer and restricts users’ access to it until a ransom is paid to unlock it.

Individuals and organisations are discouraged from paying the ransom, as this does not guarantee access will be restored, USCERT said.

According to it, ransomware spreads easily when it encounters unpatched or outdated software.

“The WannaCry ransomware may be exploiting a vulnerability in Server Message Block 1.0 (SMBv1),” the team said.

A Microsoft spokeswoman said that the company was aware of the reports and was looking into the situation.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the malware believed to be behind the attacks encrypts data on infected computers and essentially holds it for ransom.

“Known as WannaCry or Wanna Decryptor, the so-called ransomware program homes in on vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows systems,” the daily said.

In a statement, Avast Threat Lab said it has observed a massive peak in WanaCrypt0r 2.0 attacks, with more than 36,000 detections, so far.

In a statement, FedEx said it has been badly hit by the cyber attack.

“Like many other companies, FedEx is experiencing interference with some of our Windows-based systems caused by malware.

We are implementing remediation steps as quickly as possible,” it said.

“This event should serve as a globalwake-upcall — the means of delivery and the delivered effect is unprecedented,” Rich Barger, the director of threat research at security firm Splunk, said in a separate statement.

Myanmar arrests Buddhists accused of targeting Muslims

Myanmar police have arrested two hardline Buddhist nationalists and are seeking several more after they clashed with Muslims in the country’s commercial capital Yangon, underscoring the authorities’ growing concern over rising religious tensions.

The arrests came after nationalists led by the Patriotic Monks Union (PMU) raided flats on Tuesday in a Yangon district with a large Muslim population, igniting scuffles that were only broken up when police fired shots into the air.

Two weeks ago, the same people had forced the closure of two Muslim schools.

“We have arrested two people since yesterday evening, and are still looking for the rest of them,” said Police Major Khin Maung Oo, in charge the police station in Yangon’s Mingalar Taung Nyunt district, where this week’s clashes took place.

The 13-month-old administration of Aung San Suu Kyi had made tentative moves against nationalist hardliners, but the arrests mark a significant step-up in the government’s efforts, highlighting official concerns over a potential outbreak of violence in the country’s main city, which has a substantial Muslim population.

Tensions between majority Buddhists and Myanmar’s Muslim minority have simmered since scores were killed and tens of thousands displaced in intercommunal clashes accompanying the onset of the country’s democratic transition in 2012 and 2013.

Mutual distrust has deepened since October, when attacks by Rohingya Muslim insurgents in northwestern Rakhine state provoked a massive military counter-offensive, causing about 75,000 Rohingya to flee across the border to Bangladesh.

Brigadier-General Mya Win, the commander of Yangon’s regional police security command, said extra security forces had been deployed and the police were on high alert to prevent communal violence.

“We are patrolling around Muslim areas and have taken security measures around places of worship,” he told Reuters news agency.

Leaders of the PMU said they were acting independently of the Ma Ba Tha, a larger hardline Buddhist and anti-Muslim organisation that counts among its leaders the firebrand monk Wirathu, who once called himself “Myanmar’s Bin Laden.”

Ma Ba Tha holds its nationwide congress in Yangon – a city of more than five million that has been a focus of foreign investment since a former military government ceded power in 2012 – in two weeks and is expecting about 10,000 monks to attend.

Targeting Muslims

In both incidents, PMU monks and lay sympathisers targeted Muslim areas after attending a trial of fellow nationalists facing charges of inciting violence during a protest in front of the United States embassy in Yangon last year.

“We didn’t want any confrontation with the nationalists so we allowed them to shut down our schools,” said Tin Shwe, the chairman of the Muslim schools, referring to an incident on April 28.

Tin Shwe, and a lawmaker from the ruling National League for Democracy, said the nationalists came to the schools with local administrators and policemen.

On Tuesday the group – again accompanied by local authorities and police – searched a building in a different part of Yangon shortly before midnight, claiming some Rohingya Muslims were staying there illegally.

Local residents confronted the nationalists, gathered in front of the building, prompting police officers to fire warning shots to break up the crowd.

A Yangon court issued the arrest warrant against seven people, including two monks, charging them with inciting communal violence, which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison.

At a news conference on Tuesday, organised shortly before the arrest warrants were issued, the nationalists vowed to keep fighting Muslim influence in the country, citing government reluctance to “protect race and religion” in Myanmar.

“We are protecting our people because government authorities are reluctant to do that. Even though many people hate us, we are not creating problems,” U Thuseikta, a monk and a senior official of the PMU, told reporters.

Tin Shwe, the Muslim community leader, said: “We want to get equal treatment and be protected by the government – we voted for them with our hands.”

Delhi keep Pune waiting for play-off qualification

May 13, 2017 by Nasheman

Shreyas-Iyer

New Delhi: Rising Pune Supergiant’s wait to qualify for the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs continued after the visitors went down to a disciplined Delhi Daredevils by seven runs in a league contest at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Friday.

Placed at third in the standings after eight wins from 13 games, Pune will now need to win their final league game against fifth-placed Kings XI Punjab to qualify for the play-offs. Delhi, despite their two back to back wins, are placed sixth and out of the race to the play-offs.

Chasing 169, Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary raised the hopes of the visitors with a 45-ball 60, laced with five boundaries and three sixes before finding themselves seven runs short in the end. Skipper Zaheer Khan gave Delhi a stunning start by picking Ajinkya Rahane for a duck off the very first ball of the innings before packing back the in-form Rahul Tripathi (7) in his third over.

With the visitors finding themselves at a precarious 36/2, skipper Steve Smith (38) provided some resistance, raising a 38-run third wicket stand with Tiwary.

Smith looked in great touch in the middle, slamming Shahbaz Nadeem for three consecutive boundaries, including a flat six before the left-arm spinner trapped him plumb on the first ball after the strategic time-out.

Reeling at 74/3, all-rounder Ben Stokes (33) provided some momentum to the chase, adding 51 runs for the fourth wicket with Tiwary, who by now had got two lives, once on 34 when he was dropped by Sanju Samson and then on 40, dropped by Karun Nair.

Coming in at the fall of Smith, the Englishman slammed three fours and two massive sixes during his 25-ball stay, which was cut short by pacer Mohammed Shami off a low full toss, which Corey Anderson latched on comfortably. Shami then jolted the visitors with a brilliant direct hit at the bowler’s end to dismiss Mahendra Singh Dhoni for a run-a-ball (5) before trapping Daniel Christian (3) to further dent their hopes.

With 25 required off the final over, Tiwary slammed Pat Cummins for two consecutive sixes to bring up his half century before the Australian came back strongly to dismiss the Bengal right-hander in the final ball.

Earlier, Nair’s 45-ball (64), laced with nine hits to the fence, helped Delhi recover from a precarious position after the visitors had reduced the home side to 9/2 in three overs. Electing to bat after calling the toss correctly, Daredevils were off to a disastrous start, losing the key wickets of opener Sanju Samson (2) and one down Shreyas Iyer (3) cheaply.

Nair and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant (36) then steadied the ship with a 74-run third wicket stand as the right-left combo took the attack to the opposition in no time.

The first three overs yielded only 11 runs for Delhi before Nair started the onslaught slamming Washington Sundar and Ben Stokes for five boundaries in two overs.

Pant wasn’t left too far behind, slapping Sundar for a flat six over midwicket before milking Shardul Thaur for three boundaries as Delhi got back the momentum to yield 62 runs in the next five overs.

Later on, West Indian Marlon Samuels (27) added 34 runs for the fifth wicket with Nair before stumper Mahendra Singh Dhoni plucked off a stunning catch off Christian to pack back the Caribbean batsman.

Despite losing his partners at the other end, Nair, who had faced 37 balls by then completed his half century and together with Amit Mishra (11 not out) added a quickfire 22 for the seventh wicket to help Delhi go past the 150-run mark.
