SC stays interim order against Centre’s notice on Aadhaar for social schemes

June 27, 2017 by Nasheman

Aadhaar

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to pass any interim order against the Centre’s notification making Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes.

A vacation bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha said that no interim order can be passed at this stage on the “mere apprehension” of petitioners that government may deprive people from availing benefits of various social welfare schemes due to lack of Aadhaar.

The bench referred to the June 9 judgement passed by the apex court in which it had upheld the validity of an Income Tax Act provision making Aadhaar mandatory for allotment of PAN cards and filing of tax returns, but had put a partial stay on its implementation till a Constitution bench addressed the issue of right to privacy.

The bench said, “In view of the observations made in the judgement in Para 90 of the case… decided on June 9, no further observation is required.”

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that the Centre has extended the June 30 deadline to September 30 for those who do not have Aadhaar and are availing the benefits of various social welfare schemes.

Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for petitioners, told the court that the Centre should be directed not to deprive any person of the benefits of social welfare schemes which he/she is enjoying now due to lack of Aadhaar.

“No interim order can be passed in mandamus on mere apprehensions. You have to wait for one week. If somebody is deprived (of the benefits) you can point out the same to this court,” the bench told Divan and posted the matter for further hearing on July 7.

The apex court was hearing three separate petitions challenging government’s notification making Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes.

Marigold Solar Composters launched

June 27, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

Marigold Solar Composters

Prudent Eco Systems, a Bangalore based startup; recently announced its latest product, Marigold Solar Composter.

“Marigold Solar Composters are designed for waste management in the urban environment where space and other logistics for collection & eco -friendly disposal are a real challenge. By using modern technology and the forces of nature, our product ensures safe & hygienic composting of household waste. Use of our composter ensures waste is composted into rich & organized fertilizer which again goes back into nature for home gardening,” shared Ravindra Karnad, who is motivated & excited, Founder – Prudent Eco Systems. In fact Ravindra Karnad is an electric engineer from IIT Kanpur., He has had a career spanning over 3 decades in telecom, industrial automation and finally in the semiconductor industry. His last assignment was at Texas Instruments which he gave up in 2014 to start Prudent Eco Systems.

“The Marigold Mini that we recently launched is most suitable for a family that generates up to 1 litre of waste per day. The bin can take 4 – 6 weeks of waste. Made out of stainless steel on the inside, the design ensures optimized rapid & clean aerobic composting of the waste without a need of any proprietary additives to speed up the process. The process is simple, mess proof and takes place under natural conditions. This bin also ensures that no rodents enter it while the leachates (if any, usually none) collect in a separate tray that can easily be removed for cleaning. The product is built on what I call “Passive Technology” with minimal moving parts. This leads to solutions which last for years, with minimal or zero maintenance. The user sees the outcome & technology remains in the background.

When asked about his inspiration for “Passive Technology”, Ravi shared “The best example of such technology is the 5 hundred year old acoustic system of Golconda fort. In Europe, Roman Aqueducts are great example of using passive technology to solve the problem of drinking water for a large urban population. In these solutions we all understand there is some technology at play but it’s invisible to the layman but has served the purpose for centuries”
“The products have done very well across residential complexes in Bangalore where gated communities such as Ferns Paradise (Doddenakundi), Brigade Paramount, Admirality Manor to name a few, are using Marigold composters to convert their wet waste (of up to 200 kg per day) to organic fertilizer”, added Ravi.

Unlike many other composting systems, the Marigold System does not involve the use of special additives or accelerators with microbes. Prudent Eco Systems believes that composting is a natural process which should be bereft of “enhancers”. The composter uses easily available dry leaves (in powdered form) or other equivalent agricultural waste.

Marigold System bins is available in the following sizes: 1. Mini (19 Lit), 2. Small (38 Litres), 3. Large (180 Litres), 4. Extra Large (360 Litres) & 5. Ultra Large (540 Litres).

“We did extensive research amongst people who were interested in composting – including early adopters. We found consumers wanted an odor free, easy to use device that would help them compost their kitchen waste rapidly without flies or rodents. As the composter would be placed in the house – they also wanted one that looked attractive and was easy to clean. Prudent was able to address all these requirements by designing a household composter for urban living in India’, shared Rini Dutta, founder, Centric Brand Advisors which is a branding & marketing consulting firm based out of Bangalore.

India’s population to surpass that of China’s around 2024: UN

June 22, 2017 by Nasheman

population-india

United Nations: India’s population could surpass that of China’s around 2024, two years later than previously estimated, and is projected to touch 1.5 billion in 2030, according to a UN forecast.

The World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision, published by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said that currently China with 1.41 billion inhabitants and India with 1.34 billion remain the two most populous countries, comprising 19 and 18 per cent of the total global population.

“In roughly seven years, or around 2024, the population of India is expected to surpass that of China,” the report said.

The 2017 Revision of World Population Prospects is the 25th round of official UN population estimates and projections.

In its 24th round of estimates released in 2015, it was projected that the population of India will surpass that of China’s by 2022.

The new estimates released here today said that in 2024, India and China are expected to have roughly a population of 1.44 billion each. After that, India s population is projected to continue growing for several decades to around 1.5 billion in 2030 and approaching 1.66 billion in 2050, while the population of China is projected to remain stable until the 2030s, after which it may begin a slow decline.

India s population may eventually see a decline in the half century after 2050 to 1.51 billion by 2100 but it will still be the most populous country in the world.

In India, life expectancy at birth will be 71 years in 2025-2030, growing to 74.2 years in 2045-2050. The under-five mortality rate will decline from 32.3 deaths under age five per 1,000 live births in 2025-2030 to 18.6 in 2045-2050.

The report said the current world population of 7.6 billion is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100.

“With roughly 83 million people being added to the world s population every year, the upward trend in population size is expected to continue, even assuming that fertility levels will continue to decline, it said.

Ten countries are expected to account collectively for more than half of the world s projected population increase over the period 2017-2050: India, Nigeria, Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the United States, Uganda, Indonesia and Egypt.

Among the ten largest countries worldwide, Nigeria is growing the most rapidly. Consequently, the population of Nigeria, currently the world s 7th largest, is projected to surpass that of the US and become the third largest country in the world shortly before 2050.

Further, large and persistent economic and demographic asymmetries between countries are likely to remain key drivers of international migration for the foreseeable future. Between 2015 and 2050, the top net receivers of international migrants (more than 100,000 annually) are projected to be the US, Germany, Canada, UK, Australia and Russia.

The countries projected to be net senders of more than 100,000 migrants annually include India, Bangladesh, China, Pakistan and Indonesia.

The report said that in 2010-2015, around 46 per cent of the world s population lived in intermediate-fertility countries, where women have on average between 2.1 and 5 births over a lifetime.

Intermediate-fertility countries are found in many regions, with the largest being India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico and the Philippines.

In 2045-2050, it is expected that slightly less than a third of the world s population will live in countries with fertility in this range. By that time, most of the world’s population will be living in countries with relatively low levels of fertility, where women bear fewer than 2.1 children on average.

The report highlights that a reduction in the fertility level results not only in a slower pace of population growth but also in an older population. “India being a great friend of Israel and we being the world’s second largest Muslim population of 200 million Muslims can take an initiative in bringing peace to the Middle East. Indian Muslims are highly secular and being in a country which gave 4 religions to the world Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism and Hinduism ,gives us Indian Muslims an edge to look at things from a Non-Arab perspective which is the real need of the hour.” Said Dr Imam Ilyasi.

Talking about the event, Dr Ilyasisaid “Such events are very important for the Muslims to integrate with Jewish culture and understand more about Israel.

The Muslims members who participated in the event were progressive minded influencers and thinkers from the society, who will contribute to a great extent by educating the ignorant masses about the advantages of developing Jewish-Muslim friendship and it’s abrahamic origins for economic and strategic advantage.

“I have myself visited Israel and it is an amazing country with a history of Islam, Christianity and Judaism blending together. Muslims of India will add lot of value to the peace process of the Middle East” said Dr Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi

Mohammed bin Salman named Saudi Arabia’s crown prince

June 21, 2017 by Nasheman

Saudi king replaces first in line to the throne with his son, Mohammed bin Salman, the defence chief, state media says.

Mohammed bin Salman

by Al Jazeera

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has appointed his son, Mohammed bin Salman, as heir, in a major reshuffle announced early on Wednesday.

A royal decree removed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, a 57-year-old nephew of the king, as next-in-line to the throne and replaced him with Mohammed bin Salman, 31, who was previously the deputy crown prince.

According to the official Saudi Press Agency, the newly announced crown prince was also named deputy prime minister and maintained his post as defence minister.

The former crown prince was also fired from his post as interior minister, the decree said.

The series of decrees also amended Article V of the kingdom’s statute of ruling, stipulating that, from now on, only the sons and grandsons of the founding King Faisal Al Saud can be kings and crown princes.

The decision by King Salman to promote his son and consolidate his power was endorsed by 31 out of 34 members of the Allegiance Council, the decree said.

The council is made up of senior members of the ruling Al Saud family.

The Saudi king called for a public pledging of allegiance to the new crown prince early on Wednesday, the channel said.

Mohammed bin Nayef promptly vowed loyalty to his successor after the decree.

Restructuring power

Mohammed bin Salman has risen to power under his father’s reign. He had previously been in charge of his father’s royal court when Salman was the crown prince.

Over the weekend, the king had issued a decree restructuring Saudi Arabia’s system for prosecutions that stripped Mohammed bin Nayef of long-standing powers overseeing criminal investigations.

Instead, King Salman ordered that a newly named Office of Public Prosecution and prosecutor report directly to the monarch.

Mohammed bin Salman, embarked on major overseas visits, including a trip to the White House to meet President Donald Trump in March.

That visit to Washington helped lay the foundation for Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia in May, which marked the president’s first overseas visit.

The trip was promoted heavily by the kingdom as proof of its weight in the region and wider Muslim world.

Yemen and Iran

Prince Mohammed bin Salman overhauled the kingdom’s economy away from its reliance on oil. He also oversees the Saudi-led war in Yemen, as defence minister.

The war, launched more than two years ago, has failed to dislodge Iranian-allied rebels known as Houthis from the capital, Sanaa, and has had devastating effects on the impoverished country.

Rights groups say Saudi forces have killed scores of civilians and have called on the United States, as well as the UK and France, to halt the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia that could be used in the Yemen war.

The new crown prince also ruled out any chance of dialogue with Iran.

In remarks aired on Saudi TV in May, Mohammed bin Salman framed the tensions with Iran in sectarian terms and said it is Iran’s goal “to control the Islamic world” and to spread its Shia doctrine.

He also vowed to take “the battle” to Iran.

Iran and Saudi Arabia’s rivalry has played out in proxy wars across the region.

They back opposite sides in the wars in Syria and Yemen and they support political rivals in Lebanon, Bahrain and Iraq.
