Zee & Big FM Begin Content Integration

Content integration between Zee & Big FM has started following Zee Media Corporation’s (ZMCL) acquisition of stake in Anil Ambani’s FM radio business. Big FM is short listing shows based on its standing of “Suno Sunao Life Banao”. Apart from &TV’s Bhabhiji Ghar Pe Hai, the FM network has also integrated Zee TV’s popular singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs. The FM station has added the show to its programming & features contestants singing unplugged versions of songs as well as interactions with the audiences.

Social media platform musical.ly, which claims to be the world’s largest creative platform, will soon be making its debut in India. 4 FDI Proposals Pending With MIB

In the aftermath of the abolition of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB), there is a backlog of 99 foreign direct investment (FDI) proposals with varied ministries / departments, including 4 with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB). This information was provided by Commerce & Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. The government, through the erstwhile FIPB, had been considering & taking decisions on FDI proposals in the sectors on approval route, she said.

GTPL Hathway Q1 Net Down 26% QoQ

Multi – system operator (MSO) GTPL Hathway’s standalone net profit has shrunk 26% to Rs 14.8 crore for the quarter ended 30th Jun, compared to Rs 20.1 crore in the trailing quarter ended 31 March. EBITDA was down 10% to Rs 57 crore compared to Rs 81.5 crore a quarter ago. The company’s total revenue decreased 5% to Rs 178.2 crore due to a fall in other income of 59%. Expenditure dropped 3 percentage points to Rs 121.1 crore from Rs 177.7 crore. Subscription revenue increased 7% quarter -on – quarter (QoQ) to Rs 90.3 crore.

DSport Acquires Rights

Discovery Communications India’s sports channel DSport has acquired long – term rights to broadcast the PGA Championships in India. The 99th PGA Championships are set to be held at the Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina, which will host a golf major for the very 1st time, from 10th Aug, 2017 to 13th Aug, 2017. The club holds an annual event on the PGA Tour, the Wells Fargo Championship, besides having hosted several pro – events.

Disney To End Distribution Deal

Disney has decided to end its distribution agreement with Netflix for new movie releases and is planning to launch its own streaming service in 2019. On 8th Aug, 2017 the company announced its plan to end its partnership with the streaming service in 2019. The company also announced that it is buying majority stake in BAMTech, a streaming & marketing service, in a deal worth $1.58 billion. Last Aug, Disney acquired a 33% stake in BAMTech, which is a spinoff from Major League Baseball Advanced Media, for $1 billion. The company announced the plans as part of reporting fiscal Q3 earnings.

Sony BBC Earth will showcase some of the Nature’s Epic Journeys every Sat & Sun at 9 pm under the slot “Earth Specials”. Starting 12th Aug, 2017 the show will offer a perspective on animal migration through the eyes of elephants, zebras & caribou. Discovery & YuppTV New Buyers

Discovery Communications & Emerald Media – backed OTT operator YuppTV are the new players who could make a bid for the IPL media rights. The 2 companies have bought bid documents for the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights. While Discovery has launched a sports channel DSport and could be looking at TV rights, YuppTV could eye digital rights. Companies who had earlier purchased documents will not have to buy again.

KBC 9 On TV From 28th Aug 2017

Sony Entertainment Television (SET) is all set to launch its popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati in Sept, 2017. The Amitabh Bachchan – hosted show, which is coming back in its 9th season after 3 years, will be aired at 9 pm, every Mon to Fri. The new season will replace the channel’s other show Beyhadh, which will shoot its last episode on 22nd Aug, 2017.

Kalanithi Maran’s Kal Cables Gets Interim Relief

Kalanithi Maran – promoted Kal Cables will be able to continue transmitting signals in analogue mode. The Madras High Court has granted interim relief to the multi – system operator (MSO) against a Central Government order that mandates all cable TV networks to transmit signals in digital mode. Kal Cables was allowed to transmit analogue signals by Justice M. Duraiswamy after its counsel & senior advocate A. R. L. Sundaresan submitted that state – run Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Ltd had been granted an extension.

TRAI Chairman To Make STB

Cable TV & direct – to – home (DTH) subscribers will be able to switch their service providers without changing their set – top box (STB) from next year. At least that is what the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairman R S Sharma is working towards and believes substantial progress has been made to make this possible. Centre for Development of Telematics (CDoT) has readied a prototype to showcase the technology for interoperability of STBs.

ZEEL Expects To Receive $40 MN

ZEEL is expecting to receive $40 million from the 2nd phase of the sale of its sports business to Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI), a top company official has said. The company hopes to close the 2nd phase of the deal, comprising the international business of Ten Sports Network, by Aug, 2017 end or the beginning of Sept, 2017 Earlier, ZEEL had received $330 million from the sale of the India part of Ten Sports.

DD To Auction Vacant Freedish Slots

Public broadcaster Doordarshan will auction vacant slots in non – news category on its free direct – to – home (DTH) platform Freedish on 22nd Aug, 2017. The reserve price for the 37th e – auction is all set at Rs 8 crore. In the previous e – auction, the DTH platform had sold 11 slots, which included 3 news & 8 non – news, for a record Rs 85.1 crore. The reserve price for non – news channels was Rs 8 crore, while the same for news channels was Rs 6.5 crore.

GTPL Issues Notice To Zee & Turner

Multi – system operator (MSO) GTPL Hathway has issued a notice informing its customers that all ZEEL, Zee Media Corporation & Turner International India channels will not be available as part of its package. The 2 sides have failed to reach an agreement on renewing the existing distribution deal. Subscribers have to subscribe to channels from these 3 broadcasters on a a la carte basis with effect from 18th Aug, 2017.

TDSAT Asks Videocon D2h To Pay Rs 27.80 cr

The Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal ( TDSAT) has asked broadcaster Sony Pictures Networks India not to disconnect signals to Videocon d2h, provided the DTH operator pays Rs 27.80 crore upfront within 1 week. Sony had issued a disconnection notice to Videocon d2h for non – payment of outstanding dues. The DTH operator moved the TDSAT to restrain the broadcaster from giving effect to the notice. The broadcaster has claimed that the DTH operator owes it Rs 57.56 crore. Videocon d2h, however, has contended that the same is Rs 27.8 crore.

Freedish Capacity Upgraded

Information & Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani has said that public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has finished upgrading DD’s free direct – to – home (DTH) platform Freedish for 104 channels with new compression technology (MPEG 4). Presently, 80 TV channels with existing MPEG 2 technology are operational. This upgrade has been done in line with the recommendations of Sam Pitroda Committee.

Star India Confirms Leak

The 4th episode of HBO’s popular series Game Of Thrones 7, which was due to release globally on 6th Aug, 2017 was leaked online on 4th Aug, 2017. The network’s distribution partner Star India has issued a statement accepting that the compromise took place from their end. Star India confirmed it was a separate hack from the one that happened earlier this week. Multiple screenshots of the episode were shared across social media platforms and each of it carried the Star India watermark. The screenshot also had for internal viewing only” written in bold.

B4U Network Partners CPL team

B4U Network has tied up with St Lucia Stars cricket team for the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which kicked off on 4th Aug 2017, and would end on 9th Sept, 2017. Sony Renews Deal

Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) has renewed the deal to broadcast the 5th edition of Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in the Indian sub – continent. The league, which features a bevy of cricket stars like Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Brendon McCullum & Dwayne Bravo, will commence on 4th Aug, 2017 and culminate on 9th Sept, 2017. The league will be broadcast live in the Indian sub – continent including countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan Nepal & Maldives, besides India.

Zac Efron will star as serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile, to be helmed by Oscar – nominated documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger. Michael Werwie wrote the script for the project, which is told through the perspective of Elizabeth Kloepfer, Bundy’s longtime girlfriend, who went years denying the accusations against Bundy. She ultimately turned him in to the police.

Director Sachin Chauhan along with the cast & the crew Anupam Chauhan & Vaani S Sharma of his debut film, Ho Gaya Hai Mera Dil Patanga recently launched the trailer & music of the movie at La Patio in Mumbai. Ho Gaya Hai Mera Dil Patanga is about a desi boy who hails from a village in Uttar Pradesh, who is an artist by profession but considers himself as a hero and falls in love with a girl who comes from a rich family. How he succeeds to win her ladylove forms the crux of the story. Also present at the launch was the standup comedian Sunil Pal. People present at the event could relate to Dil Patanga to the movies like Raanjhanaa & Sairat. Sachin’s debut directorial venture features actors including Anupam Chauhan & Vaani S Sharma (Star Plus’ Ek Aastha Aisee Bhi fame). The dubbing of A. J. Films Creation maiden venture The Power of Vardi has been completed. The film written & directed by Salim Ahmed for producer Dr. A. J. Ansari, will be released very soon. NAWAZUDDIN GETS INJURED WHILE SHOOTING FOR ‘BABUMOSHAI BANDOOKBAAZ!’

The makers of Babumoshai Bandookbaaz have unveiled the 2nd song, “Aye Saiyan” from the engaging drama. Picturised on Nawazuddin Siddiqui, debutante Bidita Bag & Jatin Goswami, “Aye Saiyan” is a tongue –in – cheek style song that captures the hearts of folk music fans. Interestingly, while shooting the song, Nawazuddin spontaneously picked up a metal tin and started playing it. Director Kushan Nandy did not cut the shot and let it continue till its peak. Nawazuddin knew his hand was bleeding but hid the fact from everyone. Kushan informs, “Only after pack up did I notice blood on his hand. Although Nawazuddin refused to go to a hospital and wanted to just go back to his room to sleep, we forced him to stay back and called for a doctor on the sets. Local anesthesia had to be administered to him and multiple stitches were given to him. But being the professional that he is, Nawaz reported to shoot on the scheduled time next day. The “Aye Saiyan” song carries that exact shot where Nawazuddin plays the tin & got injured.” Produced by Kiran Shyam Shroff & Ashmith Kunder, directed by Kushan Nandy & written by Ghalib Asad Bhopali, Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is scheduled to release on 25th Aug, 2017.

San Mahajan, born to a Punjabi family residing in the village of Ludhiana, Punjab, moved to UK to make a living. He was recruited by the British Army where he finished his training and served the army until 2015. He started his own firm specializing in Catering / Hospitality and also provide travel & immigration assistance in UK and expanded his operations to Canada. Recently, he made his debut in an action packed role he played a brief character in Suneel Darshan’s ‘Ek Haseena Thi, Ek Deewana Tha’. His prowess for executing the action sequences was widely appreciated by the industry honchos who saw the film. “I had met Suneelji in UK during the recce of the film, and he had mentioned about a role for me.” says San. “I got a call from him couple of months later that they would like to start shoot for my role”. He also managed to spend some time meeting a few producers to discuss future film projects both in Hindi & Punjabi. San looks forward to returning to the city to explore the opportunities and is open to working in films. Currently, he is shunting between UK, Canada & India for work purposes.

AJAY DEVGN TO STAR IN RAID!

Ajay Devgn will soon be seen playing a no -nonsense Income Tax officer in Raid. Set in Uttar Pradesh in the 80’s, the film is based on real life events involving one of the most high profile income tax raids the country has ever known. Written by Ritesh Shah whose writing credits include Pink & Airlift, Raid will be directed by Rajkumar Gupta who previously directed No One Killed Jessica. Casting for Devgn’s opponent and other important characters is underway. Raj Kumar Gupta says, “Raid is a story that needs to be told on the big screen”. Producer Bhushan Kumar says, “We have produced Baadshaho and are now happy to be also producing Raid. Raid is a content driven film and we are excited to produce it.” Abhishek Pathak says, ‘As producers, we are always on the lookout for exciting material and it all starts there and with RAID it is a continuation of our thought process of backing films with content like Special Chabbis & Drishyam which we produced and Rustom which we acquired for all India distribution. We are looking forward to our association with Raj Kumar Gupta on this film.” Shooting begins in Sept, 2017 and the film will release on 20th Apr, 2018.

Vickey Prasad had 1st performed the song “Chalte Chalte Mere Yeh Geet Yaad Rakhna” at the age of 3 at a farewell party of a teacher who rewarded him with a 5 rupees note. Since then his journey of music started and Vickey used to play drums, and wanted to learn keyboard but failed due to some unfavorable economical conditions and lack of opportunities, when he was in Class IV. Vickey even worked in KFC for 1 and half month but left the job after promising himself that if I earn even a single rupee in my life then it will be from music”. Vickey who got his 1st project as a music arranger and has seen varied ups & downs had no money at one stage even to feed himself meal, when he received a call from Friday Films and one of his mentor named Manoj Rajdutt asked him to come to the given address. “When I got the chance to make scratches I promised myself that I will not let the opportunity go. With the grace of God & blessings of elders, I got the chance to compose 3 songs in Toilet – Ek Prem Katha which every struggling musician only dreams of”.

POSTER OF ‘PARMANU – THE STORY OF POKHRAN’ LAUNCHED

It’s a wrap on the shoot of John Abraham – Diana Penty starrer, Parmanu- The Story of Pokhran. The film went on the floors in May this year and has been completed. The producers announced the wrap on the film with the release of yet another intriguing poster of the thriller. John Abraham, who plays the lead in the film and is also the co -producer, sounded ecstatic as he shared, “Parmanu is an ode to the army and scientists, who although ordinary people, do truly accomplished extraordinary feats in the face of adversity to ensure that India finds its due place on the world nuclear map. It is a powerful human story of ordinary citizens who changed the trajectory of the country. It is so special to me because it combines all the aspects of film making that really speak to me – a thrilling edge of the seat plotline.”Also starring Boman Irani, it is directed by Abhishek Sharma. Though once & still considered a taboo, Suicide & depression are rarely the theme of films in Indian cinema. Depression is usually caused by traumatic experiences, bad relationships, anxiety & low self worth; leading to suicide in many cases. Many people suffering from depression are unable to reach out & seek help due to the taboos & the stigma attached to mental illness, resorting to suicide. The Short movie titled The Suicide Company Pvt. Ltd, is based on an innovative subject to combat & address this concern, Directed by Indian filmmaker Jehangir Irroni. It is produced by Shaleen V Vaid. Featuring Jay Bhanushali & Swara Bhaskar in the lead, the film’s theme is based on “Suicide And Depression” written by Pragnya Tripathi, also a Clinical Psychologist by profession & Jehangir Irroni. Jay Bhanushali said, “This is my 1st short film and I am very excited about it. The Suicide Company Pvt. Ltd is an interesting concept and I love the script”. Swara Bhaskar said, “I love the concept of this short film. I’ve never done this kind of a role and it’s quite challenging for me. It’s a great experience shooting for the same.”

ARJUN RAMPAL TO ATTEND THE CLOSING NIGHT OF NORWAY BOLLYWOOD FESTIVAL

Arjun Rampal will be attending The Bollywood Festival Norway in Oslo next month where his upcoming film Daddy will be screened as the closing film of the 15th annual event on 14th Sept this year. Arjun Rampal’s much talked – about film Daddy, which is based on the story of Mumbai based gangster Arun Gawli, has been directed by National Award winner Ashim Ahluwalia. The film has been making waves for its content and of course by the impression Arjun Rampal has been giving about the film with his terrific act in the trailer. NANDI, THE CHARISMATIC LEADER, NOW ON CELLULOID!

A film based on the life of a politician from Allahabad, 43 year old Nand Gopal Gupta whose life story seems to be straight out of a Bollywood film has been launched. Born to a postman in the heart of hinterlands of UP, Nand Gopal Gupta spent his childhood doing odd jobs to support his father & his mother who made paper bags for a living. His love story with a girl from Allahabad whose family opposed it so severely that they would rather have him dead, his wedding & his phenomenal rise makes for a very interesting script. Nandi’s rags to riches story are exciting as he grew to be a powerful industrialist. Nandi defeated 5 time MLA Keshri Nath Tripathi by a margin of more than 14,000 votes. Allahabad based Director K Hussain Naqvie, who saw the intrigue in the life of this charismatic leader decided to make a film on the life of Nandi. The music of the film is by Sanjeev – Darshan with one song by Akbar Ali, while the screenplay -dialogues are by Dilip Shukla. Talks are on with an ‘A’ grade actor essaying the role, reveals director K Hussain Naqvie. The makers also had a song recording of the film with lyrics by Kishan Paliwal & set to tune by Akbar Ali along with the launch. Besides the composers, the singers & the maker, actors Athar Siddiqui, Rneha Arya & Nafe Khan, lyricist Sanjeev Chaturvedi & comedian Naveen Kumar, graced the occasion.
