Daniel Craig confirms he’s returning as James Bond

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Los Angeles: British star Daniel Craig has finally announced that he will return as James Bond in the upcoming 25th instalment of the film franchise. However, this might be his last outing as the popular spy.

Craig made the announcement on American TV show “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday night, reports theguardian.com.

On the show, Craig was asked about whether he will play Bond for the fifth time after “Casino Royale” (2006), “Quantum of Solace” (2008), “Skyfall” (2012) and “Spectre” (2015).

“I have been quite cagey about it. I have been doing interviews all day and people have been asking me and I think I’ve been rather coy. But kind of felt like if I was going to speak the truth I should speak truth to you,” Craig said.

Colbert then asked: “We could use some good news here. Daniel Craig, will you return as James Bond?”

Craig then replied: “Yes”.

But, Craig then hinted that it would be his last outing as the famous fictional secret agent.

“I think this is it. I just want to go out on a high note and I can’t wait,” he said.

Gujarat pip Bengaluru to win PKL contest

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: Zone A team Gujarat Fortunegiants came from behind to defeat Bengaluru Bulls 27-24 in an inter-zone Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) contest here at the Transstadia Arena to register their fourth victory on a trot in the league.

Raider Sachin Tanwar (4 points) and defender Parvesh Bhainswal (4 points) helped Gujarat comeback from lagging behind in the first-half to register a win by narrow margin to stay on top of their group standings.

A valiant effort from Bengaluru captain Rohir Kumar (7 points) and defender Kuldeep Singh (5 points) went in vain in a closely-fought match.

After couple of empty raids from both sides, Gujarat broke the deadlock with a successful tackle to get the scoreboard ticking.

The home side looked to gain momentum in the match after getting all-out. Raiders Sachin and Rohit Gulia pulled off consecutive successful raids to help their side narrow the point gap after lagging behind in the early minutes of the match.

Bengaluru also opened their score tally with a successful tackle. The away side took the initial 4-2 lead, thanks to successful tackles from skipper Rohit Kumar and fellow raider Ashish Kumar.

Rohit continued to display his fine show on the opposition mat with help of his fast pace, agility and movement to add vital points to his team’s tally and maintain the lead.

The Bengaluru outfit also pulled off some fine tackles to all-out the home side taking a 11-3 lead with less than nine minutes to play in the first-half.

Thanks to an all-round effort, Bengaluru maintained a 14-9 lead at the half-time.

The second-half began with Gulia clinching a point for Gujarat Fortunegiants. Later defenders Fazel Atrachali, Parvesh Bhainswal and Abozar Mighani combined in unison to give their side important tackle points which helped the team narrow the point gap to 18-20 with nine minutes to play.

Substitute Mahendra Rajput and Sachin later played an important role clinching back to back successful raid points to comeback in the match giving their side a slender 24-21 lead with less than five minutes to play, which later helped the side clinch the match.

The Bengaluru outfit added to their lead with a successful tackle, which was followed by a successful raid from Rohit which earned the team two points.

The away side soon looked to display a failed show with their unsuccessful raids and tackles helping the opposition take lead in the match.

Later, substitute Gurvinder Singh kept Bengaluru in the match through his successful raids but failed to rescue his side from losing all on his own.

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

SC orders NIA probe into Kerala girl’s conversion, marriage

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the conversion and marriage of a Hindu girl in Kerala in 2016.

Justice R.V. Ravindran, a retired judge of the apex court, will supervise the investigation.

Ordering the probe, a bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said before taking a final call, the court “shall require the presence of the girl”.

The bench said it would decide the issue after getting inputs from all, including the NIA, Kerala government and others.

The order came after Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, Shafeen Jahan, said the court should decide the issue after speaking to the girl.

The marriage of the converted girl with Jahan was nullified by the Kerala High Court.

Petitioner Jahan has moved the top court challenging the High Court’s decision.

The court order came as the bench was told that the NIA has in its preliminary probe found that there was a pattern as “entities” in two cases that have come to light were the same.

Senior counsel Indira Jaising told the bench that it was an inter-religious matter and the court must be careful.

Saudi Crown Prince MBS ‘wants out’ of Yemen war

August 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Leaked emails show Mohammed bin Salman expressing desire to end conflict during talks with former US officials.

Otaiba, UAE’s ambassador to the US, has described the crown prince as ‘pragmatic’ [Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince has told two former US officials that he “wants out” of the two-year war he started in Yemen, and that he is not against US rapprochement with Iran, according to leaked emails published by Middle East Eye.

The revelation sheds light on the thinking of Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the 31-year-old heir to the Saudi throne, also known as MBS.

The leaks pertain to discussions he held on the Middle East with Martin Indyk, a former US ambassador to Israel, and Steven Hadley, who served as US national security adviser during George W Bush’s presidency.

The conversation took place at least one month before Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt severed diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar, accusing it of trying to undermine their war in Yemen and for having friendly relations with Iran.

The details of the meeting between MBS and the former American officials were revealed in an email exchange between Indyk and Yousef al-Otaiba, the UAE’s ambassador in Washington, DC.

The email exchange was obtained by the GlobalLeaks campaign group, according to Middle East Eye.

MBS’s doubts about Decisive Storm further undermine the position of the Yemeni president in exile, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, in whose name the Saudi-led campaign against the Houthis and their allies was launched.

In one email, Otaiba and Indyk can be seen discussing the difference between the young MBS and the elder leadership of Saudi Arabia, with the former describing him as a “pragmatic leader”.

The emails also paint a picture of how Otaiba and the UAE leadership view the future Saudi Arabia.

‘Emirati imperialism’

The emails further reveal conversations between Otaiba and Elliott Abrams, former Bush administration official and pro-Israel hawk, who describes the UAE’s objectives in the region as the “new hegemon” and “Emirati imperialism”.

The conflict in Yemen has escalated dramatically since March 2015, when Saudi-led forces launched a military operation against the Iran-allied Houthi fighters.

Since the conflict began, more than 10,000 people have been killed, and millions have been driven from their homes.

The Saudi-led operation has been blamed for the spread of cholera in Yemen, where an estimated 500,000 have reportedly been afflicted.

In the exchange, Indyk was quoted as telling Otaiba that MBS made it “quite clear” to him and Hadley that “he is OK with the US engaging Iran as long as it is co-ordinated [sic] in advance and the objectives are clear.”

Indyk was contacted by Middle East Eye and presented with the substance of his email exchange with Otaiba. He refused to comment.

Otaiba did not reply to Middle East Eye’s request for comment.

Hadley said: “I cannot comment on what was a private conversation.”

The revelations come a day after Qasim al-Araji, Iraq’s interior minister, reportedly said that both Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and MBS had asked Baghdad to act as an intermediary and help mend relations between Riyadh and Tehran.

On July 30, MBS met Muqtada al-Sadr during the influential Iraqi Shia leader’s rare visit to Saudi Arabia.

Separately, Sadr visited the UAE on Sunday and met Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of UAE, and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Sadr’s diplomacy

Sadr, an anti-American figure, commands a large following among the urban poor of Baghdad and the southern cities, including Saraya al-Salam, or the Peace Brigades armed group.

He is now seen as a nationalist who has repeatedly called for protests against corruption in the Iraqi government, and his supporters have staged huge protests in Baghdad calling for electoral reform.

Speaking to Al Jazeera on Sunday, Saad Jawad, a political science professor at the London School of Economics, termed the Saudi-Iraqi diplomatic moves “odd”.

“If Saudi Arabia is [in a dispute] with Qatar about Qatar’s relationship with Iran … how could they ask the Iraqis to amend their relations with Iran?

“The Saudis know very well that Iraq is a little bit biased in [its] relations with the Iranians, and they are under the influence of the Iranians.”

Jawad said Saudi Arabia could have asked a more neutral broker such as Kuwait or Oman, both of whom have “good relations” with Iran.

Dalits thrashed for skinning dead cow near crematorium in Gujarat

August 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: A Dalit man and his mother were thrashed allegedly by a group of 15 ‘upper caste’ men for skinning a dead cow near a crematorium at a village in Anand district of Gujarat, instead of the place where cattle are disposed of, police said today.

The incident took place almost a year after four Dalit men were allegedly beaten up by cow vigilantes at Una town in Gir-Somnath district, triggering an uproar across the country.

According to the FIR lodged yesterday in connection with the incident that took place in Kasor village of Sojitra taluka, around 15 men from Rajput community thrashed the 22- year-old man and his 45-year-old mother on Saturday night, while accusing them of defying the rules for skinning the dead cattle.

In his complaint lodged with the Sojitra police, the victim alleged that around 15 Rajput men, all from Kasor, stormed into his residence on Saturday night and started verbally abusing him and his mother by referring to their caste.

When he protested, the mob allegedly thrashed the duo and threatened them with dire consequences, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Khambhat division, D D Damor said.

“It all started on August 11, when the victim brought a dead cow for skinning from a nearby village. Instead of the designated place, he started skinning it near the crematorium. When some locals raised the issue with the sarpanch, he asked the victim to take the cow at the allotted place,” he said.

“Though the victim agreed to follow the rules next time, one of the accused entered into a heated altercation with him over the issue. Later, on August 12, around 15 men allegedly attacked the man and his mother outside their home,” the police officer said.

The Sojitra police lodged the FIR under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

No arrest has been made so far, Damor said. Both the victims have been provided round-the-clock security by the police, he added.

Modi’s I-day speech disappointing, nothing spectacular: Oppn

August 15, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day speech today drew flak from the opposition, with the Congress describing it as “most disappointing” and the Left downplaying it as “nothing spectacular”.

Senior Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said Modi had not shown “sensitivity” to the Gorakhpur tragedy — the death of infants in a UP hospital — by comparing it with natural calamities and said the PM should have given an account of the “failure” of his government.

“The Prime Minister’s Independence Day address has been most disappointing. After three years, it was time for him to give an account of the failure of his government in fulfilling its promises to the people, especially the youth, farmers and weaker sections,” he told reporters here.

On Modi’s call for embracing strife-hit Kashmiris, Sharma said, “We have never stopped him from embracing Kashmiris. He should talk to all sections and create a national consensus as well as in Kashmir.”

CPI national secretary D Raja said there was “nothing spectacular” in Modi’s speech and alleged he lacked conviction when he talked about embracing Kashmiris.

“They (the government) believe in a military solution to the dispute but he talks about embracing Kashmiris. There is no conviction in what he said,” Raja said.

National Conference working president Omar Abdullah in a Tweet alluded to Modi’s remark that the Kashmir issue would not be resolved by abuse and bullets.

“I guess that covers both sides – terrorists and security forces,” he said. While referring to the Gorakhpur deaths, Sharma said Modi did not reflect the gravity of the situation.

“He has in a very trivial manner equated the Gorakhpur tragedy to national calamities,” the Congress leader said. On demonetisation, Abdullah tweeted, “This is welcome news”. But he took a dig at the government with, “It also means RBI has finished counting demonetised notes to arrive at this firm figure of 3 lakh crores. Excellent.”

Referring to Modi’s assertion that violence in the name of faith was “not acceptable”, Raja said the PM should first ask RSS-BJP cadres to “stop engaging in communal attacks”. “What the prime minister said should be taken seriously by the RSS-BJP themselves,” the CPI leader said.

Sharma wondered what had stopped the prime minister or home minister from acting against those who had “created an atmosphere of fear and violence due to which people are feeling insecure”.

“Why has action not been taken against such individuals or organisations, when they have their government in the Centre and states? Why have they not been arrested,” he asked.

Raja also hit out Modi for not talking about jobs generated for the country’s youth. Sharma said Modi had promised to create 2 crore jobs every year but was not talking about employment any more.

He said while the prime minister was taking the credit for GST and the fight against black money, he should have shown “some grace and humility” to acknowledge the “constructive cooperation” of the opposition in ushering in the new tax regime.

“We did not expect the prime minister while addressing the country to completely ignore and then expect cooperation and endorsement from the opposition. His fight against black money was a sham and remains a sham,” he said, accusing the government of promoting crony capitalism.

“Why has this government not given an account of how much black money there is in the money that has come back to the RBI vaults,” he asked.

Referring to the fight against corruption, he said, “The country and we have to ask the prime minister why in three years the Lokpal has not been appointed.”

“If he believes in his words, then he has to be accountable for the non-appointment of the lokpal, for the dilution of anti-corruption laws and the RTI,” he said.

The prime minister has “true to his characteristic style” been “disrespectful” to the memory of his predecessors, he said.

“Modi did not mention those who fought for and gave freedom to this country, who built the foundations of modern and self-reliant India,” Sharma said.

Indian men’s hockey team beat Netherlands 2-1, win series

August 15, 2017 by Nasheman

Amsterdam: Gurjant Singh and Mandeep Singh scored a goal apiece as a resolute Indian men’s hockey team overcome world No. 4 Netherlands 2-1 in an exciting encounter here.

Led by Manpreet Singh, the team last night featured nine players from the junior team, but still beat an experienced Netherlands squad through goals from Gurjant (4th minute) and Mandeep (51).

India, thus, won the three-match series.

India straightaway sought to put pressure on the home team and the positive intent worked as they drew first blood through a penalty corner awarded in the fourth minute.

While it was Varun Kumar who attempted the dragflick which was padded away by the Dutch keeper, Gurjant was quick to pick up the rebound and work his reverse stick magic to put the ball high up into the net and score his first international goal for the men’s side.

India continued the strong attack as they made forays into the striking circle. Armaan Qureshi made a great attempt to take India’s lead to 2-0 with a shot on goal but it went slightly wide.

Though the Dutch tried to make amends when they won a penalty corner in the early minutes of the second quarter, the flick was brilliantly saved by India goalkeeper Akash Chikte.

That didn’t deter the Dutch side who attempted a full press and even put India under pressure by winning three more PCs, but they could not make the opportunities count with Chikte staying up to the challenge.

With a 1-0 lead, the third quarter saw Netherlands make desperate attempts to come back into the game but India absorbed the pressure well, only to execute a stronger defensive structure that kept the Dutch from scoring.

The final 15 minutes saw India increase their intensity in attack with Gurjant winning a PC, but it was saved.

The following minute saw Sumit win a PC for India, and this time they tried a different variation that worked like magic with striker Mandeep deflecting into the goal to double India’s lead to 2-0.

Soon after, the Dutch won a PC but debutant goalkeeper Suraj Karkera was up to the task to defend. With final three minutes remaining, Dutch forwards made three strong shots on goal but an alert Karkera kept them from converting. However, Saander de Wijn through a PC scored in the 58th minute but that didn’t stop India from walking away with a 2-1 win.

“I think we played well in all departments to win against the Netherlands. They are a very experienced team with more than eight players with over 100 International Caps. So, to beat them we had to come up with something special.

“I am very happy with the way the entire team performed as one unit especially the players making their debut. They showed no sign of nervousness and played with a lot of confidence,” said an elated skipper Manpreet after the series win.
