I-T raids: I have not violated the law, says Shivakumar

Bengaluru: After being grilled by the Income Tax sleuths for three consecutive days in connection with an alleged tax evasion case, Karnataka Minister D KShivakumar on Saturday said he has not violated the law and the truth will eventually come out.

The I-T department on Wednesday began its searches on various properties linked to Shivakumar, who is hosting 44 Gujarat Congress MLAs at a resort on city outskirts to forestall alleged attempts by the BJP to poach the MLAs ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls.

Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, is locked in a bitter fight in the election.

“I’m not the kind of person that violates the law and the Constitution…the truth will come out,” he told reporters after emerging from his residence at a posh locality here.

Without divulging any details on the searches conducted at various properties linked to him, the power minister said, “Only after I get the entire panchnama and the documentation will I speak to you.”

During the searches at about 66 places across the country in connection with a case of alleged tax evasion, IT officials said they have seized cash and jewellery worth over Rs 15 crore have so far.

Shivakumar, who hails from the Vokkaliga community, has considerable influence in Bengaluru Rural and neighbouring Ramanagara districts.

He is also the Congress’ propaganda committee chief ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls.

The 55-year-old minister, considered a resourceful trouble shooter for the Congress with proximity to the party high command, is a six-time MLA.

Thanking the party and its leadership for backing him, Shivakumar said, “All my leaders across the country have stood by me in the crisis…I don’t want to embarrass my party and I will not.”

“At no point of time I will let down my leaders and my party,”he added. Despite repeated queries from the mediapersons about the raids, Shivakumar said he would discuss it in detail later. “Things have been discussed, deliberated at various levels…I don’t want to tell anything now,” he said.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in a statement had alleged that the I-T department action was an attempt to silence the voice against the BJP.

He had on Friday termed the I-T raids against Shivakumar a “politically motivated” move on part of the Centre.

The Karnataka government has expressed its “strong protest” to the Centre over the use of CRPF personnel during searches, saying it cast aspersion on the state police.

The raids at the resort, had on August 2 sparked a huge political row with Parliament getting disrupted and the Congress terming it an “unprecedented witch-hunt” to win one Rajya Sabha seat.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Review: Just No Point In Meeting Either “Harry” Or “Sejal”

August 5, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

Banner: Red Chillies Entertainment
Producer: Gauri Khan
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Star Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma Aru Krishansh Verma, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Evelyn Sharma, Sayani Gupta, Paras Arora, Kavi Shashtri et al
Music: Pritam, Diplo & Hitesh Sonik

Director Imtiaz Ali still seems to be reeling under the hangover of the Karina Kapoor Khan & Shahid Kapur starrer Jab We Met but seriously there cannot even be the oddest comparison between Jab We Met & Jab Harry Met Sejal and it doesn’t even sound like a sequel too. Besides not even in the wildest imagination can one say that Jab Harry Met Sejal is a straight take off on that Hollywood blockbuster movie When Harry Met Sally which was so full of romance.

The most poorly scripted scenario of Jab Harry Met Sejal entails that it is a story of a bored tourist guide whose life takes a turn thanks to a spunky tourist. Harinder “Harry” Singh Nehra (Shah Rukh Khan) takes visitors on a tour across several European countries. He’s a bit aloof, rude & even finds it difficult to maintain long lasting relationships. Sejal Jhaveri (Anushka Sharma) is a tourist who has taken the services of Harry along with her entire family. She gets engaged during the trip to Rupen (Kavi Shastri). Unfortunately, her engagement ring gets lost and she refuses to go back to Mumbai until she finds it. She compels Harry to help her find the ring and he agrees to do so reluctantly. How Harry & Sejal discover each other and also themselves during the course of their “RING DHUNDO MISSION” forms the rest of the story of Jab Harry Met Sejal.

In fact Jab Harry Met Sejal begins on a swift note. No time is wasted in explaining Harry’s life, his enthusiasm as a guide, his moments of loneliness when no one is watching & his troubled relations with women are well explained in a few minutes in the song “Safar”. Sejal is also introduced in no time and the fun begins as they try to find the misplaced ring. The humor comes out very well and the 1st half moves at a breezy pace. The sequence where Sejal gets into trouble in a Prague bar and the scene thereafter stands out as the best & the most exciting portion of the 1st half of the movie. The song “Hawayein” is also played at a poignant & sweet point of the film minutes before the intermission. But post – intermission, the film becomes a long yawn inducing drag. The makers seem confused as the narrative gets chaotic. The twist in the tale, related to the ring, might come across as stupid or unfair by a section of the audiences. At one point, one wonders where exactly the film is heading to. The finale also has a twist but this one is better than the 1st. The film ends on a predictable & clichéd note.

First things first director Imtiaz Ali’s story is absoluty weak and gives a deja vu of some of the prominent love stories of Shah Rukh Khan. Imtiaz Ali’s screenplay too is absolutely faulty and rather inconsistent. No doubt some of the sequences are deftly handled and bring out the best emotions. Watch out for the sequence where Harry innocently asks Sejal for a hug. But there’s not much of a backstory provided. What prompted Harry to leave his village & what exactly was his equation with his family? Why did he never return back to his “pind”? Harry getting overwhelmed in the church and crying seems bizarre. Same goes for him crying out the name of the girl in the echo sequence. Even Sejal’s actions seem unjustified. The manner in which she pretends to be Harry’s girlfriend and is vying for his attention & praises from him also don’t make the intended impact. It’s also bewildering how Sejal’s family members leave her alone in Europe and they don’t even seem too worried about her. Nobody decides to cancel their return journey to Mumbai for Sejal’s sake and she is left on her own. Moreover, it is revealed that Harry is a man with loose character who has been caught getting physical with his clients. In fact, he was to get deport after one more such case. Yet, Harry’s bosses have no qualms when such a high – profile client like Sejal is left at his mercy. Imtiaz Ali’s dialogues however are straight out of life and yet well – worded.

That apart Imtiaz Ali’s direction, just like the script, is also a bit shaky. Known for handling films like Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar & Highway, the writer – filmmaker doesn’t seem to be in a complete form.

Pritam Chakraborty’s music is a mix of some great as well as average tracks. “Main Banoo Teri Radha” is definitely the best song of the whole lot, especially for the way it’s shot & placed. “Hawayein” is the next best and again, it’s placed at a beautiful moment in the film. “Safar” serves as a nice introductory track. But “Beech Beech Mein” & “Raula” don’t make the desired impact. Whereas “Phurrr” is relegated to the background and could have been done away with totally & “Butterfly” is foot – tapping, played during end credits. Hitesh Sonik’s background score is in sync with the film’s mood.

K U Mohanan’s cinematography is stunning. The locales of Europe and its bylanes are very well captured. Aarti Bajaj’s editing could have been crisper & smooth. The way the song “Beech Beech Mein” begins all of a sudden immediately after the intermission confuses the audiences.

Performances are wonderful. Shah Rukh Khan looks dashing and performance – wise, he is good. He brings out the angst beautifully without going overboard. Also, the trademark sarcasm that he nailed in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna & Kal Ho Na Ho is brought out here in a few scenes and it works very well. However, some of his Punjabi dialogues are difficult to comprehend. Anushka Sharma is on another level altogether in this film. She gets into the skin of her character and her performance makes one smile, guffaw and even move viewers, as and when required. Chandan Roy Sanyal as Gayasuddin has a miniscule role. Aru Krishansh Verma as Mayank has a crucial part and is quite decent. Evelyn Sharma as Mayank’s fiancé doesn’t get much scope.

In conclusion Jab Harry Met Sejal has its moments of glory. But the film is riddled with cliches & flaws that takes the film down, thanks to the poor script. At the box office, the film might have a good weekend but will struggle in the weekdays and in Week 2 too.

Bengaluru: IT raids enter 3rd day: CM Siddaramaiah says politically motivated

August 4, 2017 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: As the Income Tax raids at various properties linked to Karnataka Minister D K Shivakumar continued for the third consecutive day today,Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called it a “politically motivated” move on the part of the central government.

Raking up the issue of IT sleuths using CRPF during the searches, he also hit out at the BJP for calling it a fight against corruption, saying most of its own leaders were facing graft charges.

In a swoop down that has raised a political storm, the IT department on Wednesday began its searches on various properties linked to Shivakumar, who is hosting 44 Gujarat Congress MLAs at a resort on city outskirts to forestall alleged attempts by BJP to poach on them ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls.

Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, is locked in a bitter fight in the election.

During the searches at about 66 places across the countryin connection with a case of alleged tax evasion, IT officialssaid they have seized cash and jewellery worth over Rs 15 crore have sofar.

“This is a politically motivated raid; the timing also clearly shows that it is politically motivated,” Siddaramaiah told reporters here.

He said “I’m not against the raid or search on anyhouse, but the time that they have selected and the intentionof the central government and the IT department…”

On Wednesday, Siddaramaiah in a statement had charged that the IT department action was an attempt to silence the voice against BJP.

Asked whether he feels that Shivakumar will come out clean, the Chief Minister today said “let us see, we do not know what has happened, what they have found during the searches, but according to me it is a politically motivated.”

“He is a Minister. Taking reserve police to his houseand other places is not fair,” he said.

Without divulging any details, IT department sources said the searches at different places and questioning of the minister in this regard continued today also.

Questioning the motive behind IT sleuths going to the resort where MLAs are lodged, Siddaramaiah objected to the use of CRPF without keeping the state police in the loop.

Also, hitting back at the BJP for terming raids as fight against corruption, he said, “there are corruptioncharges against (union minister) Ananth Kumar, only inquiry is still going on.”

“There are corruption charges against so many BJP leaders in Karnataka. Is Yeddyurappa (Karnataka party chief) not facing corruption charges?” he said.

Sunanda Pushkar’s death: HC notice to Arnab, Republic TV on Tharoor’s plea

August 4, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today sought a response from journalist Arnab Goswami and his channel Republic TV on Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s plea to refrain from “misreporting” his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death and asked them to respect his “right to silence”.

Justice Manmohan issued notice to Goswami and Republic TV after Tharoor alleged that they continued to engage in “defaming and maligning” him despite an assurance given in the court on May 29 by their counsel.

Taking note of this, the bench said, “You (Goswami and the channel) have to respect Tharoor’s right to silence.”

Senior advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for Tharoor, submitted that the court must direct Goswami and the channel to not mention the expression “murder of Sunanda Pushkar”, as it is yet to be established by a competent court that her death was “murder”, to ensure the trial was not prejudiced.

Senior advocate Sandeep Sethi, appearing for Goswami and the channel, said they have only placed the actual evidence and the police report while broadcasting the news.

“We have not called him a murderer in any of the news broadcasts on the channel (Republic channel),” Sethi said.

The judge, however, said orally that he had asked the counsel who had assured that names would not be taken.

“They will have to abide by that,” the judge said.

Advocate Sethi replied, “My client stands by what was assured by me.”
The court has now fixed the matter for further hearing on August 16.

The court was hearing an application moved by Tharoor in his pending Rs 2 crore defamation suit against Goswami and the channel for allegedly making defamatory remarks against him while airing news relating to the mysterious death of his wife.

Pushkar was found dead in a suite of a five-star hotel in south Delhi on the night of January 17, 2014. The matter is still under investigation.

Being acclaimed as a young Kannada writer, he produced nearly 36 literary works, published a list of more than 3000 Kannada proverbs, and composed about 20 poems which were considered to be a ground-breaking and exceptional Kannada literature, in a short period of 20 years. To say it’s just a prodigy where a man of Germany had a soul proclivity towards Kannada & it’s poetic literature. It is a great honour for all the recipients of the award confirmed in his name”, says Prof. Dr. Suresh Nagpal. Chairman of Krupanidhi group of institutions.

Rahul Gandhi shown black flags, his convoy attacked in Gujarat

August 4, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday faced hostile black-flag waving crowds shouting slogans in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tour of flood-hit Dhanera town in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, forcing him to beat a retreat. His car was pelted with stones, shattering some windows.

The person who threw stones at Gandhi has been detained, Banaskantha’s superintendent of police told news agency PTI.

Gandhi, who arrived here on Friday on a day-long visit to flood-affected regions of north Gujarat, flew down to Dhanera straight from flood-affected Rajasthan areas and spoke to people from Manotra village as well as surrounding areas, before proceeding to the town’s agriculture produce marketing yard to meet the farmers and traders there.

Later, as he reached Lal Chowk in Dhanera he met with crowds showing him black flags and shouting slogans for Prime Minister Modi while protesting against him.

“BJP goons attack Congress VP Rahulji’s car in Lal Chowk, Dhanera, Banaskanta, Gujarat. Disgusting and disgraceful,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in a tweet on Friday.

The Congress vice-president was to address a brief public meeting in Lal Chowk but it had to be cancelled after he was heckled. Police lathi-charged the people to disperse them and Gandhi left the scene.

Even as his car moved on, people pelted water pouches at his cavalcade. He later proceeded on a visit of flood-hit villages of Banaskantha district. As he was going to Dhanera helipad, his car was pelted with stones and some window panes were shattered.

Gandhi is to take a tour of Banaskantha and Patan districts, which are the worst-affected regions in the floods in the state in 70 years. North Gujarat is otherwise a drought-prone region.

Over 200 persons are estimated to have died and 4.5 lakh people affected by the floods in the state.
