Akshay Kumar’s Toilet – Ek Prem Katha, directed by Shree Narayan Singh is in sync with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Akshay, who has interacted with varied groups over the Swachh movement, says, “The youth is here to make a difference, they are all about improving & empowering. It is good to see & hear how many great young & professional minds are setting about making the change. This isn’t a cause just for villages. There are students, especially girls, who have to drop out of schools purely because of the lack of toilets & sanitation. It’s so sad that in this day & age hygiene is a major concern in this country, and that we are losing out on women becoming more educated for reasons beyond their control. This film isn’t just about preaching “you should have a toilet, go make one”. The story encourages to teach elders & backward societies that having a toilet is not taboo; it will not only keep women safer and more comfortable, but most importantly, it will save lives. People don’t understand the number of children that die every year from fecal diseases because of lack of toilets & sanitation. This film is not the answer, it is merely a stepping stone to the change that’s needed.”

Parthiepan Offers A Clarification

Actor – director Parthiepan has clarified about his speech at a recent media interaction of Podhuvaga Emmanasu Thangam. Answering about the political entry of Rajinikanth & Kamal Haasan, Parthiepan satirically said: “I can ask Kamal Haasan directly regarding his political entry but in Rajinikanth’s case, we have to first ask the God himself and then, the actor”. But Parthiepan’s speech didn’t go down well with Rajinikanth fans. Now Parthiepan has released a press statement saying that he is a huge Kamal Haasan & Rajinikanth fan so if the latter’s fans think that his speech hurt them, it should be hurtful for him first. Parthiepan has also reiterated that despite different ideologies, Rajinikanth always supported him and he even recommended his name to a producer named Babuji. Meanwhile, an online poll says that netizens are supporting Kamal more than Rajinikanth! The recent activities of both these actors hint that they will soon plunge into the political scene. Kamal Haasan has accepted the invitation to attend the platinum jubilee function of DMK party organ Murasoli and he is expected to give a strong political speech while Rajinikanth is likely to be present at the event as an audience. Another buzz is that Rajinikanth is moving towards BJP side in Tamil Nadu, today the party’s Yuva Morcha’s national president Poonam Mahajan met the actor at his residence.

Thousands flee as air raids hit ISIL-held Tal Afar

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Iraqi and coalition planes step up air raids in advance of a ground offensive to drive out ISIL from town west of Mosul.

Hundreds of exhausted civilians were brought by Iraqi army trucks from the front line to a humanitarian collection point west of Mosul [Balint Szlanko/AP]

by Al Jazeera

Thousands of Iraqis have fled an ISIL-held town west of Mosul as Iraqi and coalition warplanes step up attacks before a ground offensive to drive out the group.

Iraqi warplanes carried out air attacks on Tuesday against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) positions in Tal Afar in preparation for a ground assault to retake the town near the Syrian border, the military said.

Plans to retake Tal Afar were announced on Monday by federal police chief Lieutenant General Raed Shakir Jawdat, who said “armoured and elite units” were headed for the town.

Tal Afar and the surrounding area is one of the last pockets territory held by ISIL in Iraq, after victory was declared against them in July in Mosul, the country’s second-largest city.

The town of Tal Afar, about 150 kilometres east of the Syrian border, sits along a major road that was once a key ISIL supply route.

On Monday, hundreds of exhausted civilians were brought by Iraqi army trucks from the front line to a humanitarian collection point just west of Mosul. Many described a harrowing journey of a day or more from Tal Afar, with no food or water.

‘There was nothing’

Jassem Aziz Tabo, an elderly man who arrived with his 12-member family, told The Associated Press he had left Tal Afar months ago and gone to a village on the outskirts to escape hunger, air raids and violence from ISIL.

“Those who tried to escape were captured and shot in the head. They killed my son,” he said. “He tried to escape, he was caught and they killed him.”

He said severe shortages have caused the price of food to skyrocket in Tal Afar, which has been besieged by Iraqi forces for months, with a kilogramme of sugar selling for $50.

“There was nothing. We were eating pieces of bread with water,” he said.

Alia Imad, a mother of three whose family paid $300 to a smuggler to lead them to safety, said there is no drinking water left in the town. “Most people drink water that’s not clean. The majority are surviving on that and a bit of bread,” she said.

The group she was with had come under fire during their escape from ISIL, she said. A woman was killed, and they had to bury her by the road.

Lise Grande, the UN humanitarian coordinator, told AP that the conditions in Tal Afar are “very tough”.

“Thousands of people are leaving, seeking safety and assistance. Families escaping northeast are trekking 10 and up to 20 hours to reach mustering points. They are exhausted and many are dehydrated when they finally arrive,” she said.

Shia groups to take part in battle

Anwar Hama, of the Iraqi air force, told AP that air raids this week have targeted ISIL headquarters, tunnels and weapons’ stores.

But Iraqi forces, closely backed by the US-led coalition, are not expected to push into the town for another few weeks, according to an Iraqi officer overseeing the operation. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Iraqi army, federal police and special forces units are expected to participate in the operation, as well as state-sanctioned mostly Shia armed groups known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces.

The Shia fighters largely stayed out of the operation to retake Mosul, a mostly Sunni city, but have vowed to play a bigger role in Tal Afar, which was mostly Shia before it fell to ISIL. Shia fighters captured Tal Afar’s airport, on the outskirts of the town, last year.

Their participation in the coming offensive could heighten sectarian and regional tensions. Tal Afar was once home to Shia and Sunni Arabs, as well as a sizable ethnic Turkmen community with close ties to neighbouring Turkey.

Turkish officials have expressed concern that once territory is liberated from ISIL, Iraqi Kurdish or Shia forces may push out Sunni Arabs or ethnic Turkmen.

On Monday, the Iraqi army began moving an armoured brigade to the front line south of Tal Afar, while an infantry division was deployed about 30km to the town’s east.

The United Nations says some 49,000 people have fled the Tal Afar district since April, compounding a humanitarian crisis that has lingered despite the cessation of major fighting inside Mosul.

It says nearly a million people were displaced by the Mosul campaign.

Sierra Leone mourns as floods kill more than 300

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Calls for aid grow as fears rise for at least 600 missing people, while aid agencies warn of risk of disease.

by Al Jazeera

Sierra Leone entered a week-long mourning period for the victims of flooding that killed more than 300 people, with fears rising for at least 600 missing people.

Three days of torrential rain triggered mudslides on Monday in the Regent area of the Sierra Leonean capital, Freetown, and massive flooding elsewhere in the city, one of the world’s wettest urban areas.

The exact death toll was unclear. Rescue workers recovered almost 400 bodies, Reuters reported, citing Freetown’s chief coroner. A Red Cross official told the AFP news agency that the death toll was around 300 people on Tuesday evening.

Freetown’s drainage system was quickly overwhelmed, leaving stagnant water pooling in some areas while creating dangerous waterways that churned down steep streets.

The United Nations said on Tuesday it was evaluating the humanitarian needs in the West African country of seven million people.

“Contingency plans are being put in place to mitigate any potential outbreak of waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhea,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

He said the UN country team in Sierra Leone has mobilised and is “supporting national authorities in rescue operations, helping evacuate residents, providing medical assistance to the injured, registering survivors, and providing food rations, water and dignity kits to those affected.”

He noted that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) released $150,000 in emergency funds immediately following the flooding.

Radio journalist Gibril Sesay said he lost his entire family. “I am yet to grasp that I survived, and my family is gone,” he said through sobs, unable to continue.

Ahmed Sesay, caretaker of a two-story house near the Guma Valley Dam east of the capital, said he was sleeping around 6:00 GMT when he felt a vibration.

“It was like an earthquake. I ran out of my quarters to the gate of the compound,” he said. “The ground shook and I had to stay outside the compound until daybreak,” Sesay added.

‘We have started burying’

Sulaiman Zaino Parker, an official with Freetown’s city council, said 150 burials took place on Tuesday evening and that many would be laid to rest in graves alongside victims of the country’s last humanitarian disaster, the Ebola crisis, in nearby Waterloo.

“We have started burying some of the mutilated and decomposed bodies. All the corpses will be given a dignified burial with Muslim and Christian prayers,” Parker said.

The graves would be specially marked for future identification, he added.

Earlier in the day President Ernest Bai Koroma issued a desperate appeal for help, saying the damage was “overwhelming us.”

“Entire communities have been wiped out,” Koroma said, as he fought back tears while touring one of the worst-hit areas of the city. “We need urgent support now.”

The government of Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries in the world, has promised relief to more than 3,000 people left homeless, opening an emergency response centre in Regent and four registration centres.

The Red Cross said it was struggling to excavate families buried deep in the mud that engulfed their homes.

“We are racing against time, more flooding and the risk of disease to help these affected communities survive and cope with their loss,” said Abu Bakarr Tarawallie, a Red Cross official.

Gujarat pip Bengaluru to win PKL contest

August 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: Zone A team Gujarat Fortunegiants came from behind to defeat Bengaluru Bulls 27-24 in an inter-zone Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) contest here at the Transstadia Arena to register their fourth victory on a trot in the league.

Raider Sachin Tanwar (4 points) and defender Parvesh Bhainswal (4 points) helped Gujarat comeback from lagging behind in the first-half to register a win by narrow margin to stay on top of their group standings.

A valiant effort from Bengaluru captain Rohir Kumar (7 points) and defender Kuldeep Singh (5 points) went in vain in a closely-fought match.

After couple of empty raids from both sides, Gujarat broke the deadlock with a successful tackle to get the scoreboard ticking.

The home side looked to gain momentum in the match after getting all-out. Raiders Sachin and Rohit Gulia pulled off consecutive successful raids to help their side narrow the point gap after lagging behind in the early minutes of the match.

Bengaluru also opened their score tally with a successful tackle. The away side took the initial 4-2 lead, thanks to successful tackles from skipper Rohit Kumar and fellow raider Ashish Kumar.

Rohit continued to display his fine show on the opposition mat with help of his fast pace, agility and movement to add vital points to his team’s tally and maintain the lead.

The Bengaluru outfit also pulled off some fine tackles to all-out the home side taking a 11-3 lead with less than nine minutes to play in the first-half.

Thanks to an all-round effort, Bengaluru maintained a 14-9 lead at the half-time.

The second-half began with Gulia clinching a point for Gujarat Fortunegiants. Later defenders Fazel Atrachali, Parvesh Bhainswal and Abozar Mighani combined in unison to give their side important tackle points which helped the team narrow the point gap to 18-20 with nine minutes to play.

Substitute Mahendra Rajput and Sachin later played an important role clinching back to back successful raid points to comeback in the match giving their side a slender 24-21 lead with less than five minutes to play, which later helped the side clinch the match.

The Bengaluru outfit added to their lead with a successful tackle, which was followed by a successful raid from Rohit which earned the team two points.

The away side soon looked to display a failed show with their unsuccessful raids and tackles helping the opposition take lead in the match.

Later, substitute Gurvinder Singh kept Bengaluru in the match through his successful raids but failed to rescue his side from losing all on his own.
