Modi said to BJP “Don’t make irresponsible statements,Such Statements hurt the party Image

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today asked BJP leaders to refrain from making “irresponsible” statements, saying such comments hurt the party’s image.

In an interaction with the party’s MPs, MLAs and other representatives, Modi said leaders at times jump to make statements in front of the media and end up providing “masala” (fodder to controversies). There is no point then blaming it for controversies, he said.
“Don’t blame the media. It is doing its job. It’s our job to not get entangled in every thing and guide the nation on every issue by standing in front of the TV. Those with the responsibility of speaking on the issue will do it,” he said. Touching on the subject of some party leaders making embarrassing comments, Modi said his remarks might seem bitter but must be made.

“At times our workers talk a lot about the media doing this, media doing that. But have we thought that we end up giving ‘masala’ to the media with our mistakes? As if we are some social scientists or scholars who can analyse every problem. The moment we see a cameraperson we rush to make a statement. The media will use the part which it finds useful. It is not its fault. We will have to restrain ourselves,” he said.

Modi’s suggestion to the party members against speaking out of turn to the media comes against the backdrop of some BJP leaders making controversial comments on the recent rape incidents and Dalit issues. According to a video of interaction posted on Modi’s website, he said if everybody makes comments, then it ends up harming the nation’s, party’s and their personal image.

He recalled that when the BJP came to power at the Centre in 2014, there were eight to ten MPs who would speak a lot on different issues but has since not let the party down after he spoke to them. According to a party statement, Modi also underlined the support the BJP had received from backward sections of the society by noting that it had the maximum number of elected lawmakers from OBC, Dalit and tribal communities, and asserted that its reach was no longer confined to a particular class, urban centres or north India.

Modi told party leaders that their responsibility has risen as public support has increased for the BJP. His comments, made during an interaction with the party’s MPs, MLAs and other representatives through his mobile application, assume significance in the wake of opposition parties’ attempts to put up a united front against the saffron party over Dalit issues and also criticism of some BJP leaders for making irresponsible statements.

A BJP release quoted Modi as saying that the party has managed to win over support of the rural masses as he also made a reference to the party’s win in local polls in Jharkhand. He also asked MPs and MLAs to take a resolve to solve four to five problems of the villages falling in their respective constituencies as he issued them several instructions to observe the ongoing ‘Gram Swaraj’ campaign between April 14 and May 5.

The BJP has not come to power due to mistakes of the Congress but because it has always stayed connected to the people and now their job in power is to solve problems facing the masses, Modi said. The perception about the BJP that it was a party of a particular class and urban centres or north India has changed and it has emerged as an “all-touching and all-inclusive” organisation, he said.

“Our mass base is increasing among all sections of the society and this is our biggest asset,” the party statement quoted him as saying. Modi asked party leaders and workers to use technology a lot to link villages to development works. Taking on the criticism that his government had not created enough jobs, he said lifestyle and sources of livelihood have changed in villages as he emphasised his government’s efforts to boost self-employment.

Those doing politics over employment figure may do so but the government will provide the masses with self-employment opportunities by developing skills of the youth, he said. Modi asked party workers to work to spread harmony in villages and bring development to the poor, farmers, Dalits and tribals.

Talking of his government’s ambitious health insurance scheme, ‘Ayushmaan Bharat’, he said wellness centres will be built in over 1.5 lakh panchayats by 2022 with the programme aiming to cover 10 crore families with a cover of Rs 5 lakh.

He also made a mention of several of his government’s welfare schemes aimed at farmers, youths and women among others and asked his party’s lawmakers to spread their reach. Modi will speak to the party workers of the poll-bound Karnataka through the video bridge technology on April 26, the statement said.

He noted that while the party’s leaders have been staying overnight in over 20,000 villages, which have over 50 per cent population of Dalits and tribals, to take welfare schemes to the masses, more than 1,000 central government officials are also staying in over 500 districts for the same purpose.

Over 11 lakh LPG connections were distributed on a day recently, he said. Modi also answered questions from elected representatives on various issues including skill development of the youth, rural development and farmers welfare.

To a question on improving lives of people in villages, he laid stress on the collective power of people and referred to Anna Hazare’s village in Maharashtra where the social activist had focused on cleanliness and how the village had become a model for others to follow

Far-right attacks increase tension in Greece’s Lesbos

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

by Patrick Strickland, Al Jazeera

Athens, Greece – A mob of far-right protesters have attacked refugees and migrants who had been holding a separate demonstration in the main square of Mytileni, the capital city of Greece’s Lesbos Island.

The attacks, which started at around 8:00pm local time (17:00 GMT) on Sunday, sparked clashes that lasted throughout the night.

The altercations began when a group of some 200 far-right protesters, who had gathered to demonstrate on behalf of two Greek soldiers currently detained in Turkey, broke through a police barrier and threw stones, bottles and flares at the asylum seekers.

“Burn them alive,” some of the attackers yelled, the Greek daily Ekathimerini reported on Monday.

ANA-MPA, a state-run media agency, reported that “far-right militants” targeted women and children, while solidarity activists and refugees attempted to create a human chain to protect the victims.

According to ANA-MPA, and police used tear gas to disperse the assailants, who had turned the town into a “battlefield”.

At least 100 people were detained, and 10 people were hospitalised due to injuries sustained during the violence, local Greek authorities told the Associated Press.

During the early hours of Monday morning, police forcibly transported the refugees and migrants, who had been occupying Sapphous Square since last week, to the overcrowded Moria camp.

“This was a well-organised action, with murderous intent, by specific extreme right, criminal and hooligan elements that have nothing to do with the island or its traditions,” Syriza, the left-wing ruling party, said in a statement.

Lorraine Leete of the Lesbos Legal Centre, a group that supports asylum seekers, said the incident follows several months of increased far-right attacks on the island.

“Since November [2017], the attacks have been increasing,” she told Al Jazeera by telephone, explaining that the local authorities’ campaign to pressure the central government to move asylum seekers to the mainland had emboldened “far-right elements of the local population”.

The office of Lesbos Mayor Spiros Galinos could not be reached for comment.

Violence on the rise
Of the 102 incidents of violence documented by the Racist Recording Network in 2017, at least 34 targeted refugees and migrants. Another seven incidents saw human rights advocates or aid workers who work with asylum seekers targeted.

Speaking to Al Jazeera in March, the Hellenic Police said it documented at least 133 hate crimes motivated by race, national origin or skin colour in 2017. That number is nearly three times more than the number of such crimes recorded in 2016.

Tina Stavrinaki, a spokesperson for the Racist Violence Recording Network, said that “we cannot put all the islands in the same basket because each one has its own conditions and specific situations”.

“Of course, the living conditions for refugees on the island have been very decisive for [the proliferation of] xenophobic rhetoric,” Stavrinaki told Al Jazeera.

“Whenever we had these outbreaks, we see that the xenophobic rhetoric is not adopted by all the locals, and many resisted.”

Refugees and migrants who arrived on Greek islands after the March 2016 deal between Turkey and the European Union are barred from travelling to mainland Greece unless they obtain permission from authorities.

Although a Greek court ruled last week that new arrivals will be allowed to move on to the mainland, those who arrived during that two-year period are still confined to the islands.

Excise dept suspends 600 licenses : Poll Code

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

During election time, politicians, especially candidates do not miss any opportunity of attending weddings, birthday parties or any other events as it provides them a chance to connect with the voters. However, not this time around. With the Election Commission going on a overdrive to foil any bid to bribe voters, the organisers are refraining from inviting politicians to weddings and other gatherings as they think it would be akin to inviting trouble from the election officials.

Sources said the EC is keeping a close watch on weddings and other ceremonies in which politicians are also guests. The premises of few events attended by politicians were also checked for freebies and excess liquor. This news spread via word of mouth across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, following which many organisers are hesitating to invite politicians to their functions.

A family in Palimaru village in Udupi district had to take a tough decision of not reminding a senior politician who is close to the family about the wedding of their family member held during last weekend. “He (the politician) had asked me to remind him about the wedding a day in advance when I invited him a month ago. But we were forced not to call him as we did not want to attract the wrath of election officials. Their (EC officials) entry will spoil the party,” said an organiser who did not want to be named.

Liquor consumption is common during Roce, a ritual held normally on the previous night of Catholic weddings in the region. But due to fear of EC raids, some families are forced to do away with liquor during such ceremony. The organisers of Palimaru Wedding said though they tried to get CL-5 licence which is required to stock more liquor for such functions, obtaining it was not easy. “After two unsuccessful visits to Excise Office for the license, we decided not to serve liquor. This left most of our guest disappointed,” he added.

Echoing similar feelings, Ivan D’Souza said one needs to visit three places to get CL-5 license and there is no single-window agency to get it without any fuss. However, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil said they have no intention of bothering private events but have to act if they get specific complaints. He maintained that liquor raids on wedding parties have nothing to do with election MCC and the Excise department is just enforcing the law.

Political Debate: BAF raises issues faced by apartment residents with politicians

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Bangalore Apartments’ Federation (BAF), a Federation representing the interests of hundreds of apartment complexes and lakhs of apartment residents across Bangalore, organized a Political Debate on an Apartment Residents Charter on Sunday, 22nd April 2018 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in Malleshwaram. The event was organized in the form of a panel discussion attended by representatives from political parties and moderated by Shri. V. Ravichandar, Chairman & MD of Feedback Consulting.

Shri. K. J. George, Bengaluru Development Minister represented Congress, Dr. Ashwath Narayan, MLA from Malleshwaram, represented BJP, Shri. Tanveer Ahmed, National Spokesperson, represented JDS and Shri. Prithvi Reddy, National Spokesperson & State Convener represented AAP.

The political debate was organized to make the political class aware of issues that apartments have been facing, including discriminatory tariffs, lack of civic services in many areas, services not being provided against cesses like garbage cess, sanitation cess etc. About 750 apartment residents from across Bengaluru thronged the venue to witness the panel discussion.

The issues assume significance in light of the fact that about 40 – 50% of the city’s population could be living in apartments & high-rise buildings in the next 10 – 15 years. All the politicians concurred that the issues raised by BAF were very relevant and were indeed discriminatory / penalizing against apartments. They assured that these issues would be looked into and potentially included in the manifestos of the respective parties.

It was also pointed out by some of the panelists that it was very important for citizens to vote and demand accountability from the elected representatives. Low voting turnouts in the past from apartment residents were cited as a reason why politicians did not take apartment residents or their issues seriously.

R. Balasubramanian, President of BAF, said, “We are very happy that senior representatives from all the major political parties were present and our issues have been taken into account.”

Srikanth Narasimhan, General Secretary of BAF, said, “We are in daily communication with more than 2 lakh residents and the summary of this discussion will be shared with them too.”

Vikram Rai, Treasurer of BAF, concluded, “This is the first step for us in our engagement with the political class and we are expecting that we will get a resolution to all our issues fairly soon. We will also ensure that apartment residents come out and vote in big numbers during the upcoming elections and thereafter too.”

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra start her canvass for Congress in coast in May

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be visiting the state during the first week of May this year to undertake active election canvas for the Congress party. Party sources said that she will take part in road show and public meeting in the city and other places in the coast during her visit.

At the same time, campaigning by Congress supremo, Sonia Gandhi, has been ruled out as she was sick and had been discharged from hospital recently. She has been advised rest. However, Dakshina Kannada district Congress president, Harish Kumar, said he has no information about Priyanka’s proposed programme in the district.

Congress has planned to utilize the services of Priyanka to boost chances of the party and its veteran leaders in Karnataka, several of whom are pitted against strong opponents, and also in view of changing scenario here and because some of the leaders including the chief minister are fighting to retain their seats. During this visit, Priyanka is expected to tour Karnataka coast, it is said, in an effort to retain one of the important bastions of the party.

Rahul Gandhi will be coming to district to seek votes for minister, B Ramanath Rai, in Bantwal constituency. It is said that the party decided on sending Rahul there as BJP has taken the issue of wresting this seat from the minster as a question of prestige.

Sources say that the party thought of using the services of Priyanka in the state, as chief minister, Siddaramaiah, and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, Dr G Parameshwar, will have to utilize a big chunk of their time for their own constituencies as the fight is tough there, and also on account of the need for Mallikarjun Kharge to devote time for ensuring victory of his son, Priyank Kharge. The chief minister is also required to help his son, Dr Yathindra, to become victorious from neighbouring Varuna constituency.

‘Outsider’ in Badami has Congress workers united and on their toes ahead of Assembly polls

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Siddaramaiah contesting The heritage town of Badami for assembly election
BADAMI:As the countdown for filing nomination papers from Bagalkot’s Badami has started for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, political campaigning is gaining momentum in Mumbai – Karnataka region.

Confusion over his candidature has come to an end, and political parties are in a nervous. Caste equations have come to the fore and a few in the Congress circle believe that his entry would consolidate Kuruba votes, other than the Ahinda votes, in favour of the party candidates in about 25 to 35 constituencies.

Irrigation Minister M B Patil says that the chief minister’s decision will give an edge to Congress candidates locked in a keen contest in various constituencies, and who may have otherwise lost by a narrow margin.

Congress will win 10 out of 18 seats in Belagavi, says Satish Jarkiholi
His candidature has already shaken things up in many constituencies in Bijapura, Bagalkot and Belagavi districts, where Congress members had turned complacent after party president Rahul Gandhi’s visit.

Local party people claim that there was a possibility of infighting otherwise — with differences within the party rank and file, between supporters of sitting MLA B B Chimmankatti and those of Congress ticket aspirant Devaraj Patil.

While in public many maintain that Siddaramaiah’s Badami ticket will help the party’s prospects, privately many express an anger for having to ‘sacrifice’ the constituency to him.

‘CM should not quit once elected’

Sources say that infighting will come to the fore during campaigning, in the absence of Siddaramaiah in Badami. The worst would be if Siddaramaiah resigns, giving way for by polls.

Congress worker Harisha wants Siddaramaiah to promise that he will not resign if he wins from both Chamundeshwari in Mysuru and Badami. “Otherwise it would be a huge let-down to party workers who have sweated to ensure his empathetic victory,” he says.

“We are happy that Siddaramaiah is coming to Badami. We hope that he will bring development here and address many core issues in north Karnataka region,” says voter Asham Peer.

While, roadside vendor Tulsiavva says that he has her vote for giving rice at subsidised rates under `Anna Baghya’. “I would have considered other candidates, if he had not been around,” she says.

Caste comes to centre stage: The JD(S) has found their candidate in Hanumanth Mavina Marad, from a dominant Panchamashali community. He has started consolidating his community members and is playing up Congress’ “divisive politics in the Veerashaiva – Lingayat issue”.

The BJP that is yet to announce its candidates has floated names of industrialist Vijay Sankeshwara and MP Sriramulu among others, so that they can gather Nayaka and a lion’s share of Veerashaiva voters.

The Congress leaders are not worried about Veershaiva votes getting divided, saying that he will win with Kuruba, SC and Muslim votes. Caste calculations are very much on BJP’s mind too, with the party playing its card close to its chest.

Meanwhile, sources in BJP and JD(S) say that they want to pin Siddaramaiah in Chamundeeshwari and Badami, without leaving him time to campaign across the state.

Will he be accessible?: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has to overcome the anti-incumbency wave, with the sitting MLA Chimmanakatti being blamed for underdevelopment, badly managed drought and snail pace of civic work. There is also his ‘outsider’ tag, unlike in Chamundeswari.

“Voters also believe that it would be difficult to reach out to Siddaramaiah sitting in Bengaluru or Sriramulu in Bellary,” says Vadvath H Kulkarni. He says that many working with rival parties may rethink and support Siddaramaiah, if he assures them that he would be accessible.

Ramu Gowda, along with fellow villagers, are worried that without a local leader, their problems will remain unattended.

“We need to learn more about this, and let him know about lack of water for irrigation in drought-hit areas as majority of borewells have dried up in villages. However, we are hopeful that his entry may change the fortunes of people,” says Arun Reddy.

Swaraj India candidate files nomination with peoples money from innovative `ondhu votu, ondhe notu’ campaign Press Release

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

P
Ramesh Chander, the Swaraj India MLA candidate from Mahadevapura, one of the top-three highest-revenue generating constituencies in the State, filed his nomination at the KR Puram taluk office by paying the required deposit of Rs.5000 with the donations he received from the people during his innovative `Ondhu Votu, ondhe notu’ campaign.
“Usually, we check only the papers, today we had to count the money too,” quipped the Mahadevapura Constituency returning officer, Shylaja Priyadashini, who was pleased to see a candidate without any fanfare. “I had to ask for the security because nowadays, political candidates come with a lot of people and sometimes it becomes defficult to control them,” she added.

After filing the nomination, the techie, vowed to continue the mission to usher in probity, transparency and accountability in electoral politics in Karnataka. “People have no choice till now. The choice they had is to chose between the devil and the deep sea, between communalism and corruption. Swaraj India is here to provide a clean and honest alternative. And we promise to be with you through out. Not just once in five years. We strongly believe that every problem can be solved when people participate and fight unitedly,” he exhorted to the small but impressive cadre on Monday.
Ramesh chander is one of the 11 candidates announced by Swaraj India, who undertook `One vote, one note’ campaign, a people-connect policy of the Swaraj India party, where the candidate and his team approach people for donations along with the vote, asking for just one note. It can be a one ruppe note or any other higher denomination. “The idea is we will be as an individual and as a Party, indebted to the people and be responsible once elected. We are also against money power playing a role and we advocate not to sell the vote,” said Yogendra Yadav, in a congratulatory message to Ramesh Chander. He also inauguarated the Mahadevapura Swaraj India office earlier this month.

In Doddanekundi, I was touched by the gesture of a push-cart vegetable vendour, after talking to her and explaining about how clean politics is important to provide an alternative choice for voters, we asked for her vote and one note as donation. The lady picked up a handful of notes from her Collection Box and generously donated without even seeing how much she gave,” said Ramesh, who added that such instances made his resolve stronger.
“With over 4,7 lakh voters, Mahadevapura is a crucial constituency as it generates municipal taxes and revenue from IT industry and is the heart and soul of the ‘Silicon Valley of India’. It has many world’s top R&D establishments, IT Parks but the improvement in terms of infrastructure and facilities like roads and water is negligible,” says KP Singh, Swaraj India’s national committee member, who lives in the same area and was part of the team that visited Bellandur, Doddanekundi, Marathahalli and Garudacharpalya recently.
“People’s small contributions would set a new culture and enable the public spirit of citizens to identify with clean politics. Not just people in the IT sector, common people, small-time business people, migrants and slum-dwellers are all looking for a change,” added Ramesh, who visited many of the localities in the ward and raised Rs.1001 on the first day. Ramesh Chander, himself a techie and the CEO of Rixyncs, authored a book titled `Three Pillars of Customer Relationship’. He also had a meeting with Bangalore Apartment Federation and Whiltefield Raising, two people’s organisations among other resident groups including those who are trying to save the Bellandur lake.
He graduated from NIT Suratkal and did his MBA from Adam Smith University USA. He believes in transparency and all the expenses will be up on the Ketto.org site, where he is also seeking donations.

April 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Central ordinance is a historic step – Prakash Javadekar
Union HRD Minister and State BJP election in-charge
Sri Prakash Javadekar has termed the Central ordinance allowing courts to award
death penalty to those convicted of raping children up to 12 years of age, as“historic step”.
Addressing a Press conference here today he said citizens were expecting some
stringent step from the Government. The revolutionary ordinance would go long
way in preventing heinous crimes from occurring. Prime Minister Sri. Narendra
Modi deserved to be commended for initiating such a deterrent law.
He denied the Union Government was forced to initiate such a measure to save
itself from the onslaught of the Opposition over recent child rape cases in JammuKashmir

natural process in the democracy. There was no political consideration behind it,
he added.
Welcoming the ordinance, the General Secretary of State BJP Mahila Morcha,
