Dairy products may increase bone density in older men

April 6, 2018 by Nasheman

Men, take note. If you are suffering from low bone density or frequent pain in your spine due to ageing, then milk, yogurt and cheese may help you achieve a positive outcome, says a study led by an Indian-origin researcher.

The study found that a higher intake of dairy foods is associated with higher volumetric bone mineral density and vertebral strength at the spine in men.

The associations were most beneficial in men over age 50, and continued to have positive associations.

“The results of this study highlight the beneficial role of a combination of dairy foods upon bone health and these beneficial associations remain irrespective of serum vitamin D status in a person,” said Shivani Sahni, Associate Scientist at the Institute For Ageing Research in Boston.

For the findings, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Density, the team included 1,522 men and 1,104 women from the Framingham Study, aged 32 to 81 years.

They examined quantitative computed tomography (QCT) measures of bone to determine associations with dairy intake.

However, no significant results was observed in women, except for a positive association of cream intake in the cross sectional area of the bone.

A previous research, presented at the Endocrine Society’s 100th Annual Meeting in Chicago, revealed that consuming a Mediterranean diet — rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, potatoes, olive oil, seeds, fish, low saturated fat, dairy products and red meat — may boost bones and muscle mass in postmenopausal women.

YSR Congress MPs resign from Lok Sabha

April 6, 2018 by Nasheman

All the five Lok Sabha MPs of the YSR Congress tendered their resignations to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Friday — the last day of Budget session — to protest against their unfulfilled demand of Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh.

They are also enraged at the Speaker not taking up the no-confidence motion moved by the party against the Narendra Modi government.

The five MPs — Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, Y.V. Subba Reddy, Vara Prasadarao Velagapalli, Midhun Reddy and Y.S. Avinash Reddy — had announced their decision to resign on Thursday itself.

The MPs would now proceed on an indefinite fast at the Andhra Bhawan in the national capital till their demand is met.

YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy also dared the rival Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to follow the suit.

“We do as we say! YSRCP MPs are submitting their resignations today (Friday). I challenge Chandrababu Naidu to make TDP MPs resign and stand united with the people of Andhra Pradesh in their rightful demand of special status for Andhra Pradesh,” Jaganmohan Reddy tweeted.

The YSR Congress, as well the TDP, staged noisy protests inside both Houses of Parliament over the demand of special status to Andhra Pradesh ever since the second-half of the Budget session had commenced on March 5.

While the TDP quit the ruling coalition — the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) — over the issue, the YSR Congress gave notice for the no-confidence motion against the Modi government.

However, the Speaker did not take up the motion even as other opposition parties also gave no-confidence notices, saying the motion could not be taken up when the House was not in order.

“On one pretext or the other, the Speaker is not admitting our no-confidence notices and has been denying us a discussion on the motion. We have given at least 12 notices. If the motion is not taken up again on Friday, we will have no choice but to resign,” Vara Prasadarao Velagapalli of the party had said on Thursday.

Bowing to a long-pending demand by a section of the state’s population, the central government had in 2014 bifurcated the state to carve out Telangana and residuary state of Andhra Pradesh by getting the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act passed in Parliament.

The Andhra parties say that Telangana, despite having less population, has walked away with the largest chunk of resources as it has got Hyderabad as its capital. Hence, they demand special status for Andhra Pradesh which entails special financial packages and other perks from the central government.

CBI continues questioning Chanda Kochhar’s brother-in-law

April 6, 2018 by Nasheman

The CBI on Friday questioned ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar’s brother-in-law Rajiv Kochhar for a second consecutive day in connection with a case of Rs 3,250 crore loan to the Videocon Group in 2012.

Rajiv Kochhar is being questioned at the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) Bandra-based office since morning.

Informed sources said the CBI was probing Rajiv Kochhar’s link over allegations pertaining to his Singapore-based company Avista Advisory’s dealings with the ICICI Bank.

The bank, however, has denied its engagement with Avista for any services ever.

The CBI on Thursday questioned Rajiv Kochhar for over five hours in connection with the case.

He was on Thursday stopped at Mumbai airport by immigration authorities around 11 a.m. while he was about to leave for Singapore.

Later, he was handed over to a CBI team which brought him to its Bandra office for questioning him in connection with its preliminary enquiry against his brother Deepak Kochhar and Videocon Chairman Venugopal Dhoot.

The agency had registered a preliminary enquiry against Chanda Kochhar’s husband Deepak Kochhar, Videocon Group officials and others for its probe to determine any wrongdoing or otherwise in the sanction of the loan to the Videocon Group by the ICICI Bank as part of a consortium of banks in 2012.

Chanda Kochhar, who is facing questions of conflict of interest on the issue, has not been named in the preliminary enquiry, which was registered after news reports raised questions about Videocon Chairman giving loan of Rs 64 crore to a firm he had jointly promoted with Deepak Kochhar, six months after his group got the Rs 3,250 crore loan.

The said money was part of a loan of Rs 40,000 crore which Videocon received from a consortium of 20 banks led by the State Bank of India.
