Cine Buzz : AKSHAY KUMAR’S SPOUSE TWINKLE KHANNA BAGS FICCI FLO ICON AWARDS

April 5, 2018 by Shaheen Raaj

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar’s spouse Twinkle Khanna who happens to be an award-winning author, film producer & female empowerment champion in her own right was amongst the top ten women entrepreneurs’ winners at 34th annual FICCI Women’s Group FLO (FICCI Ladies Organisation) Awards, which took place at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi in the presence of Guest of Honour President Ram Nath Kovind.

Twinkle Khanna was awarded the FLO Icon Award for Excellence in Conscientious Cinema as a reflection of her endeavors to raise awareness of menstrual hygiene, as co-producer of this year’s cell;uloid silver screen smash hit movie Pad Man.

Other notable award recipients included Missile Scientist Dr Tessy Thomas, Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory, Namita Gokhale, Author & Director of Jaipur Literature Festival & Falguni Nayar, Founder & CEO of the beauty empire NYKAA.

Released worldwide in Feb, 2018, Pad Man created a wave of intrigue across the globe thanks to its unconventional take on the menstrual hygiene crisis in India. Starring Bollywood heavyweights such as Akshay Kumar, Pad Man was written by R. Balki & co – produced by Twinkle Khanna through her production company, Mrs Funnybones.

Pad Man received critical acclaim internationally and was commended for providing an entertaining, yet educating & emotive comedic masterpiece, citing the struggles faced by menstruating women in India.

With statistics showing that menstruation leads to 20% of girls dropping out of education & 10% of girls in India believing it is a disease, Pad Man sought to raise awareness and destroy the stigma attached to the subject.
Twinkle Khanna’s unrelenting commitment to tackling prominent social issues, using her credentials as a producer, author & all – round women activist, has resulted in her being recognised as one of the most distinguished female empowerment champions in India.

The FLO award marks the latest accolade for Twinkle Khanna , who enjoyed a successful 2017 in which she was presented with the Celebrity Pioneer Award at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and was named “India Today’s Women Writer Of The Year” with her 2nd book “The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad” selling over 100,000 copies and pitching in at #2 on the Amazon Bestseller List for Indian female authors.

Speaking about her award, Twinkle Khanna averred, “I am extremely honored to receive such a prestigious award, and to join an illustrious list of some truly awe – inspiring female entrepreneurs who have celebrated this accolade in years gone by. The FICCI Ladies Organization has been superbly represented females for decades, and this award is a fitting commendation to recognize the hard work & the success of women all over the country. In fact, Pad Man was a huge success, and I am very proud of the global reaction the film received. The film is more than a movie, it is a movement. We set out with the aim to start a conversation on menstrual hygiene to implement change, and we are thrilled not only about the discussions it triggered but the impact we have been seeing on ground. However, our work is not done, and there are still mountains to climb & boundaries to demolish before we can say that we have completely destroyed the taboo & stigma surrounding menstrual hygiene.”

FLO (FICCI Ladies Organisation) was established in 1983 as a division of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), which is the apex body of industry & commerce in India. The FLO Awards were created with a view to recognizing the achievements of women who have excelled in their own fields and have subsequently established themselves as inspirational icons in their societies. FLO represent over 5000 female entrepreneurs & professionals and with over 34 years of experience have been promoting the entrepreneurial excellence of women though workshops, seminars, conferences, training & building programmes.

Previous winners have included Chanda Kochlar, Chief Executive office (CEO), ICICI Bank & fashion mogul Anita Dongre.

BJP’s Odisha victory will be bigger than Tripura, claims Amit Shah

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah on Thursday said that the party’s win in Odisha would outshine that of Tripura.

“The verdict in Odisha is going to be bigger than Tripura,” said Shah addressing a ‘Mahasamavesh’ in Bolangir.

Odisha will witness general and assembly polls in 2019.

“I had not spoken about Mission 120 yesterday (Wednesday) and Naveen babu planted news in media as to why I was silent. But I had not spoken about it because I am sure we will win more seats here, much bigger than the mandate we got in Tripura recently,” said Shah.

The BJP President attacked the Chief Minister saying “Naveen Patnaik is scared, not me. He is scared because the youth have come with us.”

Shah also accused Patnaik of “shielding criminals”, who, he said, were attacking the BJP workers.

“The ruling BJD is resorting to political violence and over 14 of our activists have been murdered in the last one and half years and their killers are moving scot-free as Naveen Patnaik is shielding them,” said the BJP President.

Maintaining that BJP doesn’t believe in violence, he said once BJP comes to power, they will ensure that the killers are put behind bars.

He also criticised the ruling BJD for not working for the welfare of the people of Odisha.

“If a government, which has been ruling in the state for the last 18 years, cannot at least provide drinking water to the people of the state, then it has no right to stay in power,” Shah pointed out.

Earlier in the day, Shah had a meal at a Dalit’s residence in Bolangir’s Deogaon village. The BJP President was accompanied by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other leaders.

Kerala politicians caught off guard as SC cancels 180 MBBS admissions

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered cancellation of admissions of 180 third-year MBBS students in Kerala, leaving both the ruling and opposition political leadership red faced as the Assembly had unanimously passed a bill a day earlier to regularise the admissions.

The Supreme Court verdict came on an appeal by the Medical Council of India against regularisation of these admissions made in two self-financing Kannur and Karuna medical colleges in 2016-17.

The Kerala government was directed to see to it that all 180 admissions were cancelled and there was no attempt to disobey the apex court directive.

Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the entire opposition voted for the bill because ofconcern over the future of the students.

Calling the apex court ruling “most unfortunate”, Communist Party of India-Marxist State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said “the government had only the future of these students in mind.”

The state had decided to replace the ordinance to regularise these admissions with the new bill. The apex court pointed out that it was yet to become a law as the Governor had not given his assent.

Former State Congress President V.M. Sudheeran flayed the Congress-led opposition for voting in favour of the bill. “This shows all protests by the opposition against exploitation by self-financing institutions’ managements is nothing but hoax,” he said.

Affected students said they were at a loss of words since their future appeared bleak.

“We really do not know what wrong we did to suffer like this. We did not even have a counsel to represent us,” said one of them.

The court will take up the matter again after four weeks.

CBI files case against Vadodara firm for Rs 2,654 cr fraud

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The CBI on Thursday said it has filed a case against Vadodara-based Diamond Power Infrastructure Ltd (DPIL) and its directors for defrauding a consortium of 11 banks of Rs 2,654.40 crore.

Apart from DPIL, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR filed on March 26 includes names of firm’s founder Suresh Narain Bhatnagar and his sons Amit Suresh and Sumit Suresh.

The FIR also mentions some unidentified public servants.

The CBI has reportedly conducted searches at the corporate office, two factory premises and at the residences of the directors of the firm.

DPIL, which is engaged in the production of cables and other electrical equipment, through its management has fraudulently availed credit facilities from a consortium of 11 banks since 2008, leaving behind a total outstanding debit of Rs 2,654.40 crore as of June 29, 2016, according to the FIR.

The company managed to get term loans and credit facilities, in spite of the fact that they were already appearing in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s list of defaulters and the caution list of Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGCI) at the time of initial sanction of credit limits by the consortium, it said.

At the time of consortium’s formation in 2008, Axis Bank was the lead bank for the term loan and the Bank of India was the lead bank for cash credit (CC) limits.

Bank of India, which tops the list with Rs 670.51 crore of loans, is followed by Bank of Baroda (Rs 348.99 crore), ICICI (Rs 279.46 crore), State Bank of India (Rs 266.37 crore), Axis Bank (Rs 255.32 crore), Allahabad Bank (Rs 227.96), Dena Bank (Rs 177.19 crore), Corporation Bank (109.12 crore), Exim Bank of India (Rs 81.92 crore), IOB (Rs 71.59) and IFCI (58.53 crore).

The company, allegedly with support of officials from various banks, managed to obtain enhancement in credit facilities. During 2011, DPIL had projected turnover of Rs 2,197.60 crore for the year 2012 whereas the actual turnover was Rs 1,267.60 crore only for the year 2011, the FIR said.

“DPIL got credit facilities enhanced from Rs 285 crore to Rs 480 crore.”

Next year, against the estimates of Rs 2,197.60 crore, DPIL actually achieved a turnover of Rs 1,740.38 crore as on March 31, 2012, which was Rs 457.22 crore less from the projected turnover figure, despite the fact that the CC limit was fully availed by the company, said the FIR.

As per the FIR, Bank of India officials, while conducting the credit review, did not decrease the cash credit limit and kept it unchanged at Rs 480 crore even though such figures were based on grossly exaggerated sales figures.

TN shutdown strike paralyses normal life

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Normal life was paralysed in Tamil Nadu on Thursday due to a DMK-called shutdown over the Centre’s failure to set up a Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

DMK leader M.K.Stalin led a massive procession comprising members from his party and his allies, on the arterial Anna Salai to Marina Beach here affecting traffic flow.

He was accompanied by Tamil Nadu Congress leader S. Thirunavukkarasar.

Speaking to reporters before being taken away by the police, Stalin said the strike was successful and thanked all those who cooperated.

Hundreds of protestors belonging to DMK, Congress, CPI, CPI-M, MDMK, VCK and farmers were also taken into police custody across the state.

In Chennai, very few government buses were plying on the roads while autorickshaws stayed off.

But radio taxis were available.

Suburban and long distance train services were also being operated as usual, a Southern Railway official told IANS.

However, six suburban trains were held up at the Avadi point here, the official said.

There were brief protests on the rail tracks in Salem and Tirunelvelli.

In Tirunelvelli, a large number of DMK cadres protested in front of a passenger train. Around 150 protesters were detained.

As a result of the Tirunelvelli protest, the Chennai-bound Guruvayur Express and Trivandrum-bound Ananthapuri Express were delayed, according to the Southern Railway official.

In the hosiery town of Tiruppur, units were shutdown in support of the strike.

However petrol bunks stayed open and milk supply was not affected.

As per reports reaching here, shops in Erode, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram downed their shutters.

In neighbouring Puducherry, transport services were affected while three buses belonging to Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation were damaged.

The Supreme Court on February 16 reduced Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water from 177.25 thousand million cubic feet (TMC), which was less than the 192 TMC allocated by a tribunal in 2007. Karnataka’s share of water was increased by 14.75 TMC.

The Centre failed to set up the CMB within six weeks of the apex court’s February 16 order. The deadline ended on March 29.

Ethiopia seeks return of looted treasures from London museum

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The London museum said they will consider loaning the looted treasures back to Ethiopia [Victoria and Albert Museum]

by Dereje Dessalegn, Al Jazeera

Ethiopian artifacts looted by the British colonialists in the 19th century are on a display in London, but a top Ethiopian official says the treasures belong to Addis Ababa and they need to be returned to the rightful owner.

Ethiopia hopes the display at the London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), which will remain open to the public until June 2019, will help in the eventual return of the lost treasures.

The items, which include a gold crown, a gold chalice and a royal wedding dress, were stolen after the capture of Meqdela – the mountain capital of the then Ethiopian ruler, Emperor Tewodross II, in 1868.

“Showing the looted Meqdela artifacts to the public is positive. We hope it is going to create pressure on them [the Museum] that will help us in our efforts to return the artifacts to where they belong,” Desalegn Abebaw, the director of country’s Cultural Heritage Inventory, Grading and Inspection, told Al Jazeera.

In 2007, Addis Ababa launched a formal restitution claim to have the treasures returned back to Ethiopia.

“It’s good to show these artifacts to the public rather than locking them somewhere since the exposure is going to help us to return them back,” Abebaw said.

Loaning the treasures back to Ethiopia
In an interview with the UK’s Guardian newspaper, V&A director said the museum would consider loaning the treasures back to Ethiopia.

“The speediest way, if Ethiopia wanted to have these items on display, is a long-term loan … that would be the easiest way to manage it,” Tristram Hunt said.

But many in Ethiopia think the return of the items should not be up for negotiations.

“They took someone else’s possession. It is criminal and they should apologise for it,” Elizabeth Wolde Giorgis, director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University, told Al Jazeera.

“No European artifacts have been looted and taken to Africa. So, why should it be ok for a British museum to have looted African treasures? And not apologise for it,” Giorgis said.

In 2005, a huge 1,700-year-old granite obelisk was returned home to Ethiopia from Italy, 68 years after it was looted by the troops of the fascist Italian leader Benito Mussolini.

The Axum obelisk is regarded as one of Ethiopia’s national religious treasures.

Italian troops seized the obelisk in 1937 and took it to Rome, where it remained until 2005, despite a 1947 UN agreement to return it to Ethiopia.

It was returned from Rome to the northern Ethiopian town of Axum, where it was greeted by thousands of Ethiopians chanting prayers and weeping with joy.

Facebook: Up to 87m affected in Cambridge Analytica scandal

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

by Al Jazeera

Facebook has said that up to 87 million of its users may have had their data accessed in the Cambridge Analytica scandal, almost double the number previously reported.

The announcement came on Wednesday in the second-to-last paragraph of a statement by Mike Schroepfer, Facebook’s chief technology officer.

The social media giant is facing scrutiny over its data collection following allegations that the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica obtained data on tens of millions of Facebook users to try to influence elections.

Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s chief executive officer, is set to testify before the US Congress on April 11 for the first time.

Frank Pallone, US representative from New Jersey, said on Wednesday: “[The hearing] will be an important opportunity to shed light on critical consumer data privacy issues and help all Americans better understand what happens to their personal information online.”

Clearer picture

Also on Wednesday, Facebook announced it was updating its terms on privacy and data sharing to give users a clearer picture of how the social network handles personal information.

“We’re not asking for new rights to collect, use or share your data on Facebook,” said a statement by Erin Egan, Facebook chief privacy officer, and Ashlie Beringer, deputy general counsel.

“We’re also not changing any of the privacy choices you’ve made in the past. We explain how we use data and why it’s needed to customise the posts and ads you see, as well as the groups, friends and pages we suggest.”

The Facebook executives wrote that “we will never sell your information to anyone” and impose “strict restrictions on how our partners can use and disclose data”.

New rules
The statement said the new terms will offer better information on how Facebook advertising operates as well.

“You have control over the ads you see, and we don’t share your information with advertisers,” the statement said. “Our data policy explains more about how we decide which ads to show you.”

Egan and Beringer said Facebook would go further in explaining how it gathered information from phones and other devices.

“People have asked to see all the information we collect from the devices they use and whether we respect the settings on your mobile device (the short answer: we do),” they wrote.

Users may offer feedback on the new policy for seven days before Facebook finalises the new rules and asks its members to accept them.
