Pakistan approaches World Bank over Kishanganga dam in Kashmir

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Pakistan approached the World Bank to complain that India despite the arbitrator’s pause period had completed the construction of the disputed $860-million Kishanganga hydropower project in Jammu and Kashmir.

Dawn newspaper, citing an unnamed official, reported on Thursday that power division of the Energy Ministry sent a fresh communiqué early this week to the World Bank, urging it to ensure that India abided by the the Indus Waters Treaty — a 1960 pact that gives control over the water flowing from Beas, Ravi and Sutlej rivers to India.

The control over the water flowing in three western rivers — the Indus, the Chenab and the Jhelum — all in Jammu and Kashmir — was given to Pakistan.

Islamabad had in the past reached out to the World Bank, the mediator between the two countries in the water treaty, to express its objection to the design and construction of the two projects — the 330 MW Kishanganga hydroelectric project and the 850 MW Ratle hydroelectric project — on the tributaries of the Indus in Jammu and Kashmir.

India says it has the right under the treaty to set up hydropower plants on the tributaries of the rivers flowing through its territory. But Pakistan fears this might reduce the water flow of the rivers into its territory.

The Pakistani official said there was no doubt that India had completed the Kishanganga project during the period the World Bank “paused” the process for constitution of a Court of Arbitration (COA) as requested by Pakistan in early 2016.

The Pakistani request was countered by India by calling for a neutral expert, Dawn reported.

Pakistan had called for resolution of disputes over Kishanganga project on the Neelum river and 850 MW Ratle hydropower project on the Chenab.

The daily said that Islamabad had received reports in August 2017 that New Delhi had completed the Kishanganga project as per the design that had been objected to by the former.

The new letter was sent to the World Bank after a Pakistani delegation of the Indus Waters Commission was not allowed to visit various controversial projects in India, including Kishanganga and Ratle schemes, it said.

In December 2016, the Bank announced that it had “paused” the process for either appointing a COA or a neutral expert and started mediation between the two countries. Since then the Bank arranged two rounds of talks between the two sides but the Indians kept on building the project, the daily said.

The last round of bank-facilitated and secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan were held in Washington in September but no consensus was reached.

In view of the inability of the parties to agree on the matter, the World Bank was reported to have called another round of discussions but failed to bring New Delhi to the negotiating table, the daily said.

Court refuses to direct lodging of FIR against Kejriwal

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

A Delhi court has refused to direct the lodging of an FIR against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for allegedly misusing public money in advertisement for his own political gains, saying spending money on ads was the prerogative of the government.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal said that publication of the advertisement and spending public money on it was a matter of administrative and policy decisions of the government. The complainant had alleged that on October 30, 2015, the chief minister had given an advertisement in a newspaper and dishonestly misappropriated the public money for his own political benefits.

“The expenditure on this public letter (in form of advertisement) from state exchequer is not misappropriation of money. The complainant cannot interfere in the same nor can take assistance of the court because the courts have to show judicial restraint in interfering with the policy matters of the government. It’s not the case of any personal loss of the complainant.

Afridi invites wrath of Indian cricketers for Kashmir comment

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Hitting back at Shahid Afridi for his controversial comments on Kashmir, India cricketer Suresh Raina and renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar today asked the former Pakistan batsman to advise the Pakistan Army that it stops supporting extremists for maintaining peace in the Valley.

In a surprise comment, Afridi yesterday expressed concerns about “worrisome” situation in Kashmir and was mocked by Gautam Gambhir.

Today Raina, who has roots in Kashmir, took to twitter to offer advise to Afridi.

“Kashmir is an integral part of India and will remain so always. Kashmir is the pious land where my forefathers were born. I hope @SAfridiOfficial bhai asks Pakistan Army to stop terrorism and proxy war in our Kashmir. We want peace, not bloodshed and violence,” Raina wrote on the social networking site.

Javed Akhtar also expressed the same sentiments.

“Dear Mr Afridi , since you want to see a peaceful JK sans any human rights violations could you please see to it that pak terrorists stop infiltrations n pak army stops supporting the separatists by closing down the training camps. It will greatly help in solving the problem,” wrote the veteran artist.

Meanwhile, India captain Virat Kohli said being an Indian, country’s interest was paramount to him.

“As an Indian you want to express what is best for your nation and my interests are always for the benefit of our nation. If anything opposes it, I would never support it for sure,” Kohli told reporters on the sidelines a training session at Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru.

Former India captain Kapil Dev said that Afridi’s comment does not even deserve a reaction.

“I have no time for him. Who is he? Why are we giving importance to him? We should not be giving importance to such people. If somebody sitting in one corner of the world says something, I think the best thing is not to react to it,” Kapil Dev said in Mumbai.

SRH need to sort out little details, says Bhuvneshwar Kumar

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Ahead of the 11th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) experienced seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar reckons that to lay their hands on the silverware, the team needs to look out for the “little things” which can make them champions.

The 28-year-old leading India bowler said the team needs to do “things correctly” through the tournament.

“Our aim is to win the championship but we know it’s not going to be easy because each team is equally good. So we have to do out things correctly throughout the tournament and look for the little things which will make us champions,” Bhuvneshwar told IANS during an event of the Red FM, which is the principal sponsor of the Hyderabad squad.

Among the two names to be retained by the Sunrisers before the auction along with banned David Warner, is rightfully Bhuvneshwar, the top wicket-taker in both the 2016 and 2017 editions.

When asked about any special strategy for the forthcoming edition, the Uttar Pradesh cricketer said that there are no special plans as of now but the team will soon draw up something before entering the meet.

“As such there is no special strategy, but an evening before the match you have a team meeting; you make plans according to the teams. There is still a week to go for the tournament; so, for now, there is no special strategy. But, yes, we are going to make some before entering the meet,” he said.

On paper, apart from Bhuvneshwar, there are no big and experienced names in the bowling department to support him. The overall squad is also relatively young and new. Asked whether it will affect the team’s performance, the pacer said he didn’t really think so.

“It is not always about the big names in the bowling department. If you look at our bowling, Rashid (Khan) is there, Siddharth Kaul, who has done really well last year, is also there among few young players. So we have a decent bowling line-up which has done well in the last few years. I don’t think there will be any pressure or problem regarding the lack of experience,” Bhuvneshwar said.

“Inexperience does’t mean that you do not have the experience of international cricket. If you talk about IPL, in the SRH team, players have played the league at least four to five times. So it is more than enough experience to win the tournament,” he added.

Bhuvneshwar said a proper domestic set-up and IPL have helped India a lot as the country has produced several quality pace bowlers.

Unlike the 1990s when there were only one or two quality pace bowlers in the team, India now has several top pacemen like Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.

“It is difficult to tell the exact reason, but if you see our domestic set-up, it is really good. IPL has also been there for the last 10 years. There are good coaches also; so the credit goes to IPL as well. Yes, it is a shorter format but still gives you the experience and confidence to do well at different levels,” Bhuvneshwar said.

Karnataka bandh on April 12 : Cauvery Issue

April 5, 2018 by Nasheman

The President of Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha, Vatal Nagaraj has called for Karnataka bandh on April 12th contradicting the formation of Cauvery Water Management board. As indicated by media reports, Vatal Nagaraj was detained when he was protesting in Attibele town which is near Tamil Nadu-Karnataka outskirt.

On February 16, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had coordinated to frame the CMB inside within a month in a decision that insignificantly expanded Karnataka’s offer of Cauvery water, hence lessening the allocation for Tamil Nadu and settling the extended water debate between the two southern states.

By uprightness of the SC decision, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Union Territory of Puducherry would be every year qualified for 404.25 tmcft, 284.75 tmcft, 30 tmcft and 7 tmcft of Cauvery water, separately out of an aggregate of 740 tmcft.
