‘Future PM’ hoardings greet Rahul in Mumbai

June 12, 2018 by Nasheman

Congress President Rahul Gandhi arrived here on Tuesday morning for a court hearing in a defamation case and for other party engagements in Mumbai.

Hoardings proclaiming Gandhi as the ‘Future Prime Minister’ greeted him on the roads outside the Mumbai Airport to Thane as he was accorded a warm welcome by Congress state President Ashok Chavan, Mumbai city chief Sanjay Nirupam, Janardhan Chandurkar, Bhai Jagtap, Raju Waghmare and other senior leaders.

Thereafter, Gandhi proceeded to the Bhiwandi Court in adjoining Thane district which was virtually converted into a fortress for the framing of charges in a defamation case against him filed by a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker four years ago.

The case was lodged by RSS worker Rajesh Kunte who objected to Gandhi’s utterances at an election rally in March 2014 wherein he blamed the RSS for the killing Mahatma Gandhi.

Later this afternoon, Gandhi will go to Mumbai and interact with the party’s over 15,000 booth-level workers at a function in Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon.

This will mark the launch of a national endeavor ‘Project Shakti’ by which the Congress President will establish direct communication between the grassroots workers and the party’s central leadership, said Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam.

In the evening, Gandhi is scheduled to have a meeting with the party’s municipal corporators and is also likely to call on Nationalist Congress President Sharad Pawar.

Veere Di Wedding
“Veere Di Wedding Has A Bold Theme That Defies Stereotypes”
Banners: Balaji Motion Pictures Films, Anil Kapoor Films & Communication Network & Saffron Broadcast & Media
Producers: Anil Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor  & Nikhil Dwivedi
Director: Shashanka Ghosh
Star Cast: Kareena Kappoor – Khan, Sonam Kapoor – Ahuja, Swara Bhasker, Shikha Talsania, Sumeet Vyas, Sukesh Arora, Vishwas Kini, Edward Sonnenblick, Neena Gupta, Ayesha Raza, Vivek Mushran, Manoj Pahwa, Anjum Rajabali, Alka Kaushal, Ekavali Khanna, Suraj Singh, Kamlesh Gill, Bubbles Sabharwal, Babla Kochar, Kalpana Jha et al.
Music: Shashwat sachdev, White Noise, Vishal Mishra & Karan
Right at the outset one feels sorry but Shashanka Ghosh’s direction is the biggest culprit in Veere Di Wedding. The film just gives an overview and never allows viewers to delve into the lives of the Veere’s.
So the scripted scenario of Veere Di Wedding is the story of 4 female friends at an uncertain age. Kalindi Puri (Kareena Kapoor – Khan), Avni Sharma (Sonam Kapoor – Ahuja), Sakshi Soni (Swara Bhasker) & Meera Sood (Shikha Talsania) are the best of pals. Avni is doing well professionally as divorce lawyer but her mother (Neena Gupta) feels that it’s not all the worth it unless she gets married. Sakshi is married and is facing tough times. Meera is married and also has a child and she is unhappy as her father has not accepted the union. Kalindi is dating Rishabh Malhotra (Sumeet Vyas) and all is going well in their relationship. But one day Rishabh proposes marriage. Kalindi says yes but she develops cold feet. Her marriage gets planned with much fanfare and it stresses her out. Of course her gang of friends assemble to be with her during the most significant period of her life, while battling their life problems. What happens next forms the crux of the rest of the film.
Yet some shocking developments take place in the film like Rishabh’s father (Manoj Pahwa) getting arrested. But it’s not executed in the desired manner. Bollywood has given innumerable bromance flicks. But there have been hardly any such film involving our pretty ladies. This is quite a shocker as the urban, multiplex audiences would love to see female bonding flicks talking about their problems, quirks, way of life et al. Finally Sonam Kapoor &  her sister producer Rhea Kapoor took up the challenge and designed Veere Di Wedding. Despite their lead actress Kareena Kapoor – Khan getting pregnant, they stayed put and refused to shelve the project. The film is now finally out for release.
The songs are well woven in the narrative. Shockingly, the film’s biggest chartbuster “Tareefan” is missing. “Pappi Le Loon”, “Bhangra Ta Sajda”, “Laaj Sharam” & “Aa Jao Na” are all relegated to the background. “Dagmag Dagmag” is played during the opening credits while “Veere” makes the most impact. Arijit Dutta’s background score is quite good.
Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti’s cinematography is bad. There are too many close ups which take away the charm from many scenes. Shweta Venkat Mathew’s editing is razor sharp. Priya Ahluwalia’s production design is rich. Rhea Kapoor, Abu Jani – Sandeep Khosla’s costumes are quite bold & appealing.
Mehul Suri & Nidhi Mehra’s story is very relatable and raises some important points about marriage, relationship, friendship, broken families et al. But Mehul Suri & Nidhi Mehra’s screenplay fails to do justice to the plot. The script is haywire and hence one doesn’t feel totally involved with the goings on. Also there are far too many subplots in the film and too much is packed in almost 125 minutes.
That apart Mehul Suri & Nidhi Mehra’s dialogues are peppered with adult talk & abusive language. At places it is very witty & funny but at several places, it looks forced and that it’s added just for the effect. Thankfully most of the dialogues are left intact by the Censor Board.
All in all Veere Di Wedding rests on a great idea & interesting characters. But it doesn’t translate into a fully entertaining fare. It’s the direction that plays the spoilsport. The execution is very shaky above all it hampers the impact. The introduction of all the characters is nice and the marriage prep sequence is the most relatable. Post interval, the Thailand sequence stands out. The climax should have been a highpoint but sadly enough that doesn’t happen here.
What really stands out is the chemistry of all the 4 lead actresses which is brilliant indeed and looks very convincing. It’s difficult to say if it’s their performance that’s great or their chemistry in real is the same as shown in the film.
Performance wise it is Kareena Kapoor – Khan who delivers a marvelous & power packed performance. She indeed looks like a commitment phobic person who’s getting the chills with the elaborate marriage preparations. Sonam Kapoor –  Ahuja leaves a mark but the other actors dominate her. Swara Bhasker is absolutely outstanding and her performance will surely be a talking point for days to come. Watch out for her excellent dialogue delivery! Shikha Talsania is a complete natural. While Sumeet Vyas is quite endearing. Vishwas Kinni as Bhandari plays the irritating character very well. Neena Gupta is decent. Vivek Mushran as Cookie Chacha & Anjum Rajabali as Kishan are just about fair. Manoj Pahwa is his usual jovial self and Ayessha Raza as Rishabh’s mother certainly leaves a mark. Ishwak Singh as Nirmal is almost apt for the part. On the other hand Ekavali Khanna as Paromita raises the requisite laughs. And one can say Edward Sonnenblick as John is okay.
On the whole Veere Di Wedding has a bold theme that defies stereotypes and delivers a shock value.
At the box office, the multiplex audiences & the youth brigade especially the females will patronize the film in a big way. Watch it for all the fun & madness created by the 4 heroines.

Telangana BJP MLA says Those hosting Iftar parties are ‘vote ke bikhari’.

June 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Days after accusing Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao of indulging in “minority appeasement”, BJP MLA T Raja Singh Lodh on Monday said only those “begging for a vote”, host Iftar parties. In a video posted on Facebook, the MLA from Goshamahal constituency in Hyderabad also said that the “green book (Quran) is responsible for spreading terrorism in India” and that he will neither host nor attend any Iftar party with those who “talk of killing Hindus”.

“These days, many Telangana legislators are busy hosting Iftar parties, wearing skull caps and taking selfies. They think if they have to do vote bank politics, they will have to think of ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’ (together with all, development for all). This is their thinking. Those who sit with them (attend Iftar parties) are ‘vote ke bikhari’ (beggars for vote). My thinking is different,” Raja said in the video.

Launching a direct attack on the Muslim community and accusing them of “killing the Hindus”, the MLA said his religion was different as Hinduism taught giving respect to everyone. “But some religions and their religious books preach to kill Hindus as they are ‘Kafir’ (a term literally meaning non-believers but often construed as insulting to followers of other religions). How can I attend an Iftar or host one for those who talk of killing Hindus,” he said.

The BJP leader said in order to substantiate his above claims to his friend, he told him that it was mentioned in the “green book” – a reference made to the Quran, the holy book of the Muslims. “The green book is responsible for the spread of terrorism in India and it should be banned. I will fight to get it banned,” he said.
Raja also said that he dreams of an “akhand Hindu rashtra (undivided Hindu nation), construction of a Ram Temple in Ayodhya, a ban on cow slaughter across the country and the return of displaced Kashmiri Pandits. “When there are over 50 Muslim countries and more than 100 Christian countries, why can’t there be a single Hindu nation?” he asked.

This is perhaps not the first time when the MLA has made such statements. He was booked by the police several times in the past over his alleged provocative speeches. Raja had once said that the heads of those opposing the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya must be chopped off.

While accusing CM Rao of “appeasing” the minorities, he had earlier posted on Twitter, “KCR wants aid from the Centre as the state is in financial crisis but for appeasement of minorities, the Telangana government is spending Rs 66 crore for Iftar party. Development over vote bank politics.”

India arrests 18 after two men lynched over WhatsApp rumours

June 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Police in the Indian state of Assam has arrested at least 18 people in connection with the lynching of two youths following rumours on social media and WhatsApp that they were child traffickers.

Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das were beaten to death on Saturday by a mob of around 200 people in a remote village of Karbi Anglong district, some 200km east of the state capital, Guwahati.

The duo is the latest victims of rumours circulating on social media, particularly WhatsApp, about the child kidnapping gangs.

“We have taken strict measures against the culprits and arrested 18 individuals. We have also arrested some persons who were involved in spreading rumours on social media,” Director General of Assam Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia told Al Jazeera.

The clip of the lynching was widely shared on social media, which showed Das pleading with folded hands: “Don’t kill me … Please don’t beat me. I am an Assamese … Please let me go.”

Nath, 30, and Das, 29, had gone to remote Panjuri Kachari village on Saturday for sightseeing in a black four-wheel drive when they were chased and beaten to death on the suspicion of child kidnapping.

“There was a rumour that some child abductors had entered our village. This was shared via WhatsApp and Facebook. The message also read that one of the abductors had long hair,” said a village woman at Panjuri Kachari village who didn’t wish to be named.

“The youth was stopped and asked about their whereabouts. But in between some local people came and started thrashing them,” the woman said.

Cyber monitoring

Following the incident, police have alerted all the districts to keep a strict vigil on social media and rumour mongering.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has asked the state police chief Saikia to ensure that the police force maintains vigilance to ensure peace.

Mob lynching is a primal instinct. No one knows why they are lynching, but all seem to be cast under a spell to kill.

“I urge everyone to maintain peace and social harmony and not to fall prey to rumours. We won’t spare anyone and strictest of punishment will be given to the culprits,” the chief minister posted on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Assam government has decided to constitute a special unit for cyber monitoring to prevent attempts to spread rumours and to cause social disturbances.

The incident has caused an outrage, with thousands of people coming out on the streets of Guwahati demanding justice for the victims

Das, who sported dreadlocks, was a musician based in the state of Goa, and Nath was a Guwahati based businessman.

Gopal Chandra Das, the father of Das, said that his son always enjoyed outdoors.

“He travelled many places in the country. He loved to go to the hill stations. He would play music and wanted to do something, but destiny had other plans. I asked him not to go alone there (Karbi Anglong). But he went ahead,” said the senior Das as he burst into tears ahead of the last rites of the two youths in Guwahati.

Mob violence spreading through social media has been on the rise in India. During the last two years, more than 10 such incidents have been reported from different parts of the country.

Last May, two youths were lynched in Assam’s Nagaon district on the suspicion of stealing cows.

“Mob lynching is a primal instinct. No one knows why they are a lynching, but all seem to be cast under a spell to kill,” activist Tinat Atifa Masood told Al Jazeera.

“Over the last few years, the number of people lynched has gone up. A person is lynched for being different from ‘the others’ in their looks, culinary choices, their attire and their philosophy. And since the government of the day has been quiet on this issue, the ugly head of mob lynching is now a new normal in India,” she said.

Women’s Asia Cup: India outclass Pakistan to reach finals

June 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Six-time champions India once again stormed into the finals of the Women’s Asia Cup after thrashing arch-rivals Pakistan by seven wickets in their last league encounter at the Kinrara Academy Oval here on Saturday.

Electing to bat, Pakistan folded up for a meagre 72/7 with Sana Mir (20 not out) and Nahida Khan (18) managing to reach the double figures in a lacklustre batting effort.

In response, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (34 not out) and her deputy Smriti Mandhana (38) steered the Indians to a comfortable victory with 23 balls to spare after starting on a shaky note.

Earlier, left-arm spinner Ekta Bisht spun a web around the Pakistanis with three wickets, and was well assisted by the other Indian bowlers who stuck to a disciplined effort.

During their chase, India too got off to a forgettable start, losing former skipper Mithali Raj and Deepti Sharma for ducks with the scoreboard ticking 5/2.

But thereafter the defending champions did not look back as the left-right combo of Smriti and Harmanpreet forged a brilliant 65-run third wicket stand to take the side within sniffing distance of victory.

Table toppers India (8 points) will now have to wait for the final league match between Bangladesh women and hosts Malaysia later in the day, to find their opponents for Sunday’s summit clash.

On the other hand, second-placed Pakistan, with six points in their kitty will desperately hope for an upset by Malaysia over Bangladesh (also on 6 points) to bag a place in the final.

Muslims Express Anguish, Demand Correction & Apology for Blasphemy of Quran by a Dress Store

June 11, 2018 by Nasheman

By : Seedhi Baat

With the arrival of the Holy Ramadan, considering it to be an opportunity to make good business, many traders and business companies create variety of marketing strategies to attract the customers and persuade them to visit their business houses. The strategy includes printing of booklets of prayer time tables, handy cards of Sehri and Iftaar timings, calendars etc. and distribute them in various Masjids/Mosques. But, a Dress Material company from Chennai namely POTHYS, which is engaged in online business, has published a booklet containing Kannada Translation of Sura-e-Yaseen along with Arabic Text and has distributed in the Mosques in thousands of quantity.

Some people have approached the Editor of “Seedhi Baat” and accused the company of blasphemy making fun of the Holy Qur’an and Sura-e-Yaseen, in the name of the so-called marketing strategy. It has many errors. Without proof reading they have published the Qur’anic booklet. Moreover, it is distributing the booklet in the mosques in Bangalore, Chennai and in areas wherever they have branches. The complainants have appealed to the editor to seek explanation from the company as to whether this has been done with mischievous intention or with any other purpose.

POTHYS OFFICIALS NOT RESPONDING

Seedhi Baat Editor communicated to the Call Center of “Pothys” and has explained the issue in detail to one named Vijay, the media Manager of the said company and asked him to provide apology from the company. In response he said, this was not their mistake but it is the the fault of the printer. When asked, has the booklet been shown to any Scholar before and after its print? For this, there was no clear and convincing reply. When the editor of Seedhi Baat insisted and demanded that explanation letter or apology letter has to be released, Vijay responded by saying that after discussing with the top officials of the company we will revert to you by evening by 8 pm (i.e. yesterday as on 10 June 2018). But so far there has been no reply of any kind received nor any explanation. Vijay, who is the media Manager of the company, is not receiving our calls nor is he providing the contact numbers of the concerned officials of the Management, so as to have a direct talk with them. The errors have been found on page numbers 2, 5, 16, 22, 24, and last page number 30, the images of which are being shared for reference. The complainants have appealed that, in which ever mosque this booklet is being distributed they should be stopped forthwith and lodge a Police Complaints in the Police Station of their area, about the issue of manipulation in the words of Qur’an in the above booklet.

LEGAL COURSE OF ACTION

The complainants along with the Seedhi Baat Bureau is contemplating on taking on the Pothys and sue the dress store in to the court of law for its act of blasphemy and desecration of the Holy Quran.

Tyres of Indian economy punctured, policy blunders responsible: Chidambaram

June 11, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Monday said three out of the four wheels of the national economy have been “punctured” and held the BJP government’s “administrative incompetence”, “reckless decisions” and “policy blunders” responsible for the rising farm distress, unemployment and economic failure.

“The tyres on three of the four wheels on which the economy rides are punctured. Firstly exports: the growth rate in the last four years has been negative. Secondly, private investment: it is in the doldrums, if not dead. Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) is stuck at 28.5 per cent for three years,” he told reporters here.

“Thirdly, private consumption: it was limping until a few months ago, there is a mild uptick, and we keep our fingers crossed.”

He said the only tyre that seemed to be inflated was government expenditure.

“But here too, the government’s options are getting limited because of the pressure on the current account deficit (CAD) and the fiscal deficit (FD),” he said.

“I do not think, situation of the world economy is affecting India. What is affecting (us) is our own policy blunders, reckless decisions and administrative incompetence,” he said.

Chidambaram said the Reserve Bank of India’s confidence survey stated that 48 per cent felt that the economic situation of the country had worsened in the last 12 months.

“The survey is unlikely to have covered the most backward parts of the country or the most deprived sections of the people. Therefore, the number of 48 per cent will be actually higher,” he said.

The senior leader said farm income was not rising even at a fraction of the growth rate of the economy and farm wages were constant for the last three-four years.

“At these rates, it will take another 14 years to double farmers’ income,” he said while taking a dig at the Narendra Modi government’s plan to double farm income by 2022.

He said farmers’ despondency had turned into anger and they had come on to the streets to protest.

“The principal reasons are uneconomic price for farm produce and stagnant wages of farm labour. MSP (Minimum Support Price) is not adequate. Every farmer knows that the promise of MSP = Cost + 50 per cent is a ‘jumla’,” he said.

Chidambaram said unemployment was rampant in the country, which was a “far cry” from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s promised two crore jobs a year.

“There is great ferment in campuses across the country because young men and women know that there will be no jobs when they graduate. So far, nobody has bought the innovative idea that ‘frying pakoras is also a job’,” he said.

He questioned why the Labour Bureau Survey for October-December 2017 was not yet released.

Chidambaram said the gross NPAs (Non-Performing Assets) had risen in the last four years from Rs 2,63,000 crore to Rs 10,30,000 crore and would rise further.

“No bank is willing to lend a big-ticket loan. Credit growth to industry in the last four years was 5.6, 2.7, -1.9 and 0.7 per cent. The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) is an utter failure. Government cannot find the additional money to recapitalise banks,” he said.

When asked about fugitive businessmen Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya, Chidambaram said: “I know, they (government) have made no efforts to get them back. In fact, I doubt if they are making any effort. Our position is that they allowed both the gentlemen to leave the county.”

He said demonetisation had caused the growth rate to decline from 8.2 per cent in 2015-16 to 6.7 per cent in 2017-18.

“The Tamil Nadu government has officially acknowledged that 50,000 MSME units were shut down in the state in 2017-18; 5,00,000 jobs were lost; and capital investment in the MSME sector declined by Rs 11,000 crore,” he said.

A flawed Goods and Services Tax has continued to haunt trade and business, he added.

Chidambaram said the social security laws and programmes have been neglected by the BJP-led central government.

“The Food Security Act has not been implemented. MGNREGA is no longer demand-driven, wage arrears have mounted. Crop insurance covers barely 30 per cent of farmers, it is a windfall for insurers. Health Protection Scheme is another ‘jumla’,” he said.

Chidambaram said there was “widespread anger” about the artificially fixed prices of petrol, diesel and LPG.

“There is absolutely no reason why the prices should be higher today than what they were in May-June 2014. It is nothing but a case of fleecing the helpless consumer.

He said if petroleum products are brought under the Goods and Services Tax (GST), their prices will decline “immediately”.
