Hyderabad girl jumps to death after failing to get good NEET rank

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

A 18-year-old girl jumped to death from a building here on Tuesday allegedly after failing to get a good rank in the NEET exam, police said.

The girl, identified as Jasleen Kaur, jumped from top of the 10-storey shopping complex in the busy Abids area in the heart of the city.

A police officer said the girl apparently ended her life as she went into depression after not getting the expected rank in National Eligibility-cum-Entrance (NEET) exam, the results of which were declared on Monday.

A resident of Kachiguda neighbourhood, Jasleen reached Mayuri Complex in the commercial hub of Abids around 10.30 a.m. After parking her two-wheeler, she climbed the stairs and reached the top floor. Some people who spotted her raised an alarm to deter her but she jumped down.

According to police, the girl sustained head injuries and died on the spot. The body was shifted to government-run Osmania Hospital for autopsy.

Police registered a case. The CCTV footage showed the girl wearing jeans and T-shirt walking up the stairs and later jumping to death.

Caution over RBI’s policy review subdues equity indices

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Broadly negative global cues along with caution ahead of the RBI’s monetary policy review depressed the key Indian equity indices on Tuesday.

According to market observers, heavy selling pressure was witnessed in the capital goods, consumer durables and IT stocks.

Around 3.30 p.m. the broader Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) provisionally closed at 10,593.15 points — down by 35.35 points, or 0.33 per cent — from its previous close.

The barometer 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex), which opened at 35,029.45 points, provisionally closed at 34,927.09 points — lower by 84.80 points, or 0.24 per cent — from its previous session’s close of 35,011.89 points.

Sensex touched a high of 35,073.12 points and a low of 34,784.68 points during the intra-day trade.

On Monday — the previous trade session — both the indices closed in the negative territory as caution prevailed over the Reserve Bank of India’s second monetary policy review.

Similarly, the barometer S&P BSE Sensex settled in the red. It had opened at 35,503.24 points and closed at 35,011.89 points, 215.37 points or 0.61 per cent lower from the previous session’s close at 35,227.26 points.

No misdoing in Rafale deal: Sitharaman

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday rubbished Congress charges about Rs 40,000 crore loss to exchequer in the Rafale deal and said there has not been any “misdoing” or “scandal” in the government decision to buy the fighter jets from France.

Answering a query at a press conference here, Sitharaman did not name the Congress but said false comparisons were being made and the attacks concerning the deal were politically motivated.

“(My) absolute assurance that there has not been any misdoing there. I am assuring in the company of all senior officials of the ministry, yes there is no scandal in Rafale, we are very clear on that,” Sitharaman said.

She said the government had been spending a lot of time explaining how the decision was taken and that it was an inter-governmental agreement.

The Minister said the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government could not purchase the fighter jets despite spending a lot of time on the deal.

“All false comparisons between Rafale, which was not bought, and using that as a comparison to say that what you paid today is far higher is just a non-starter and very clearly a motivated attack.

“So someone who could not even buy inspite of spending quite a lot of time is saying that what you paid is far higher than what I paid, which he has not paid at all in the first place,” she said.

The Congress has been alleging that Modi government finalised purchase of the Rafale jets at a higher price than negotiated by the UPA government.

It said the UPA negotiated Rafale at Rs 526 crore per plane but the Modi government paid Rs 1,670 crore instead, causing a loss of over Rs 40,000 crore in the purchase of 36 fighter jets.

The UPA government had decided to purchase 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA).

Vegetables Prices Jumped Up Due To Former’s Protest

June 5, 2018 by Nasheman

Vegetable prices jumped as much as 10 percent in major Indian cities, including Mumbai and Delhi, as a four-day old strike by millions of farmers curtailed supplies.

Farmers began their 10-day protest on Friday to press demands such as farm loan waivers and higher prices for produce such as cereals, oilseeds and milk.

Wholesale prices of some vegetables like tomatoes and french beans have risen due to lower supplies, said a Mumbai-based vegetable vendor Mahesh Gupta.

Outbreaks of rural discontent poses a challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who promised when he came to power in 2014 to double farm incomes in five years.

Farmers in eight states, mostly ruled by Modis Bhartiya Janata Party, have restricted supplies of vegetable and milk to the cities markets.

We are distributing milk and vegetables to the poor and needy, but weve decided not sell. The basic idea is to highlight the plight of farmers who have been overlooked by the government, said Ramandeep Singh Mann, a farmer based in Punjab.

Prices for many crops have fallen sharply, while the price of diesel has gone up, squeezing millions of Indias mostly small-scale farmers.

Last year six farmers were killed in similar protests that became violent in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

In recent days, farmers blocked highways in some places and poured milk onto roads. The protests have been peaceful so far, although organizers are planning to increase the intensity in coming days.

The government hasnt fulfilled promises it had given last year. We have no option but to intensify our protests, said Ajit Nawale, state general secretary, All India Kisan Sabha, one of the farmers union participating in the strike.

Two-thirds of Indias 1.3 billion people depend directly or indirectly on farming for their livelihood, but farm incomes only account for 14 percent of gross domestic product, reflecting a growing divide between the countryside and wealthier cities.

I am stocking up vegetables for the entire week, said Anjali Salunkhe, a housewife in Mumbai, fearing prices could double as they did during protests last year.

Taking cognisance of the Delhi Police chargesheet, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal asked Tharoor to appear before him on July 7.

“I have gone through and perused the chargesheet along with the documents filed along with it. Cognisance taken on offence regarding abetment to suicide of late Sunanda Pushkar and for committing cruelty upon her. On the basis of the police report, I take cognisance abetment of suicide punishable under 306 IPC and cruelty under 498A IPC. There exists sufficient grounds to proceed against Shashi Tharoor for commission of offence,” Vishal said.

The magistrate also issued notice to the prosecution for a written reply on BJP MP Subramanian Swamy’s application.

The cause of Sunanda Pushkar’s death was poisoning. A total of 27 tablets of Alprax were found in her room but it was not clear how many she had consumed.

On May 14, police chargesheeted Tharoor under sections 306 and 498A of the Indian Penal Code, pertaining to abetment to suicide and cruelty to wife, which entails a jail term that could extend up to 10 years.

‘Veere Di Wedding’ BANNED In Pakistan
Rhea Kapoor’s Veere Di Wedding starring Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker & Shikha Talsania in pivotal roles was released on 1st Jun, 2018 in India but its release in the neighboring country looks difficult. The movie has been banned in Pakistan and the reason for the same is its BOLD content. The movie sure has been made to push the envelope. Its premise is women empowerment and therefore it is meant to engage a dialogue on women’s sexuality and touches upon societal pressure on getting girls married early and other facets of patriarchy. But looks like the censor board in Pakistan is not very happy with its content and therefore has deemed it vulgar, due to the fact that the lead actresses cuss openly throughout the film. The board feels that the movie is not appropriate for family viewing. Sindh Censor Board has cleared the movie with a few cuts but Islamabad Censor Board is obstructing the release of Veere Di Wedding.
