August 4, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) met on Saturday to discuss the political situation in the country and decided to target the Narendra Modi government on the issues of corruption and its “failure” to provide jobs to the youth.

The meeting was presided over by Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

Sources said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam and Rafale deal were among the issues that featured prominently at the meeting.

Gandhi later indicated that the party will launch a campaign against the Modi government ahead of the assembly polls later this year and the Lok Sabha polls next year.

“The CWC met today (Saturday). As a team, we discussed the political situation in the country and the huge opportunity for the Congress to highlight issues of corruption and failure of the government to provide jobs to our youth. Thank you to all those who attended today’s meeting,” Gandhi said in a tweet.

Rajat Barmecha Identifies With His On-Screen Character Of Kartik

Rajat Barmecha who rose to fame with Anurag Kashyap’s movie Udaan is also popular for playing Kartik in Bindass Originals’ series Girl In The City. While most of the actors don’t identify with their fiction characters Rajat has a different version altogether. The actor shares, “There are many similarities between Rajat & Kartik. Over the period of time the writer of our show has understood Rajat so well that she has merged both the real & the reel together and there is hardly any difference. Except, Kartik cooks and I don’t. The best thing about my character Kartik is that – he lives in the moment and does not take life seriously. He is always having fun and that’s how exactly I am in real life. The way we rehearse and do a scene together is very organic. I have always been an organic actor but with them I have learnt to have fun while working.” The 2 episodes of the 3rd season of Girl In The City series is released on all Bindass platforms and has been receiving a lot of love from the audience.

In an advisory issued on Saturday, the Goa Police traffic cell warned drivers against mimicking the Kiki challenge which has gone viral on social media, calling the act “highly dangerous” and instead implored people to take up the challenge to quit alcohol and smoking.

“People have been urged to stay away from such foolish challenges, even if some crazy celebrities are doing it,” Traffic Superintendent Dinraj Govekar said in a statement.

The Kiki Challenge is “highly dangerous to one’s own safety and that of other road users”, the statement said and added that strict action under the Motor Vehicle Act and Indian Penal Code, including arrest and confiscation of the vehicle, could take place for filming the challenge.

The Kiki challenge, which has gone viral all over the world involves people jumping out of moving cars to dance to Canadian rapper Drake’s song “In My Feelings”.

3 HC judges appointed to SC

August 4, 2018 by Nasheman

Three High Court judges were on Saturday appointed to the Supreme Court, including K.M. Joseph, the Chief Justice of Uttarakhand High Court, ending a standoff between Centre and the judiciary.

The President signed the warrants of appointment of Justice Joseph, Madras High Court Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Orissa High Court Chief Justice Vineet Saran.

“In exercise of the power conferred by the clause (2) of the article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice K.M. Joseph, Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, to be a Judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” said the notification of Justice Joseph.

The total number of judges in the apex court would now be 25, against the sanctioned strength of 31.

With the appointment of Justice Banerjee, the top court would have three female judges.

The top court collegium had reiterated its January 10 recommendation saying it had noted that there was nothing adverse regarding suitability of Justice Joseph in the two communications sent by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad while returning the recommendation for reconsideration.

Recommending Justice Joseph’s elevation to the top court, the collegium said: “The collegium considers that at present Justice K.M. Joseph is more deserving and suitable in all respects than other Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of High Courts for being appointed as Judges of the Supreme Court.”

The government had, however, sent the files back to the collegium to reconsider Joseph’s name, invoking the principle of seniority, saying that he stood at number 42 in the seniority of High Court Judges and that there were 11 Chief Justices of High Courts senior to him.

The government had also flagged the issue of non-representation of judges from the Scheduled Castes and Tribes in the apex court.

However, the general perception was that Justice Joseph had earned the displeasure of the central government after a bench headed by him ruled against the imposition of President’s rule in Uttarakhand.

Modi government looting people in name of fuel: Congress

August 2, 2018 by Nasheman

As the government increased the price of non-subsidised cooking gas by Rs 35.50 per cylinder in Delhi, the Congress on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi government is looting the people in the name of fuel by launching another assault on them.

“Modi government’s greed is making everyone’s budget bleed. LPG customers are suffering under the greedy Modi government. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is cruel, they loot in the name of fuel,” said Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala.

“Even as high petrol and diesel prices were singeing the budgets of common people, farmers and middle class, the Modi government again launched a midnight assault on the people by hiking the price of LPG cylinders.

“BJP government has already earned a humongous Rs 10 lakh crore in taxes on fuel prices,” the Congress leader said.

Surjewala said: “People are distressed due to price rise and their hard earned savings are being evapourated due to the greed of the Modi government. Why is BJP government profiteering from their savings and inflicting unbearable burden on their incomes?”

“The promise of ‘Acche Din’ has turned out to be the biggest hoax which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has played on the people of India. We demand that fuel prices must be brought under the GST ambit,” he added.

The price of non-subsidised LPG cooking gas will be hiked by Rs 35.50 per cylinder in New Delhi, and that of the subsidised one by a marginal Rs 1.76, effective August 1.

According to Indian Oil Corporation, the increase in prices of non-subsidised LPG cylinder is mainly due to changes in international prices and foreign exchange fluctuations.

Effectively, the price of subsidised cylinder will increase to Rs 498.02 per in August 2018 from Rs 496.26 per in July 2018.

Facebook partners Asian College of Journalism for high-integrity news in India

August 2, 2018 by Nasheman

In its bid to curb the spread of fake news and ensure high-quality journalism in India, Facebook on Thursday announced its first partnership in the country with Chennai-based Asian School of Journalism (ACJ).

Part of the Facebook Journalism Project — announced last year to develop high-quality journalism around the world — the partnership will also establish a scholarship programme at ACJ.

“The association with ACJ reflects our commitment to support the journalism ecosystem by training future journalists,” said Campbell Brown, Facebook’s Global Head of News Partnerships.

By partnering with ACJ, Facebook that has 270 million users in India will be able to help train journalism students on fact-based and high integrity journalism in the digital age, the social media giant said in a statement.

The scholarship programme will support five students from ACJ in four career specialisations — print, new media, radio and television.

“We are happy to partner with the Facebook Journalism Project. It will provide valuable hands-on experience and the expertise to distinguish informative and trustworthy news,” said Sashi Kumar, Chairperson, ACJ.

Facebook also announced to extend its collaboration with Mumbai-based BOOMLive, an independent digital journalism initiative.

“Through our partnership with BOOMLive, we hope to encourage the systemic growth of fact-checking on all platforms,” Brown added.

BOOMLive is certified by the Poynter Institute, the international fact-checking network.

“Following fact checking in English during the Karnataka pilot stage, BOOMLive will now also provide fact checking capabilities in Hindi and Bengali, and will also fact-check photos and videos, in addition to article links,” Facebook noted.

The social media platform partnered BOOMLive in April before Karnataka went to the polls in May.

Facebook said it will continue to strengthen its work and partnerships around news literacy in India and extend it across local languages, partner newsrooms, journalists and fact checkers to build a more informed community.

“We hope this will contribute to ongoing efforts to combat misinformation online,” said Govindraj Ethiraj, Founder, BOOMLive.

The Facebook Journalism Project is serving as a hub to promote and support high-quality journalism on the social media giant’s platform, while collaborating with news publishers and third-party fact-checking organizations across the globe.

BJP will get ‘demonetization-like’ jolt in 2019: Shiv Sena

August 2, 2018 by Nasheman

The Shiv Sena on Thursday predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will get a ‘demonetization-like’ shock in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

It said that winds of changed in favour of the opposition alliance were blowing in almost all the states and that people had “made up their minds since one-and-half years” to give a big jolt to the BJP.

“A major obstacle has come up on the ‘Delhi route’, via Uttar Pradesh with the coalition of the Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party. There are similar reports emerging from Bihar where Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal are forging alliances with other parties. There are strong signals of a change of power at the Centre,” the Sena said.

Political pundits are already speculating that in the next parliamentary elections, the tally in Uttar Pradesh may be reversed compared to 2014 when the BJP swept with 71 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats.

“For now, the bouquet of ‘jumlas’ (falsehoods) has now wilted. The last resort is to create caste divisions and polarization,” the Sena said in an editorial in the party mouthpiece ‘Dopahar Ka Saamana’.

Disillusionment with the BJP was now evident in every state and when people demand answers to past promises, the best option was to confound them in caste politics.

The rulers (BJP) seem to have realized this and have already launched their poll campaign, it said.

“In normal circumstances, such haste has never been witnessed ever when the government and its head have plunged into full-fledged canvassing almost a year before the elections.”

“Now, the masses feel that in order to strengthen democracy, the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers must keep away from the poll campaign arena on moral grounds. The people have elected you to do their work, not carry out your party’s duties. The people who feel cheated know too well how to teach them a lesson, similar to the ‘demonetization’ bombshell,” the Sena warned.

The editorial said there was growing unrest in all parts of the country including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
