Moderate polling in Karnataka by-polls

November 3, 2018 by Nasheman

Moderate voting was registered for the by-polls to three Lok Sabha and two Assembly seats in Karnataka on Saturday, an Election Commission official said.

“Moderate voting of around 35 per cent has been registered across the five constituencies till 1 p.m. Polling has been going on in a peaceful manner barring few Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) glitches which were rectified soon,” the official told IANS.

The by-polls were being held in Bellary (reserved), Mandya and Shimoga parliamentary constituencies and Ramanagara and Jamkhandi Assembly segments since 7 a.m.

While Jamkhandi registered a high voting percentage of 43.50 as of 1 p.m., Mandya stood at the lowest with 26.8 per cent, the official added.

Shimoga saw 30.2 per cent, Bellary 35.7 per cent and Ramanagara 39.8 per cent of voting.

Voting will take place till 6 p.m. in the 6,543 polling booths across the five constituencies.

A total of 54.5 lakh electorate, 27.2 lakh men and 27.3 lakh women, are eligible to cast their ballots.

As 51,131 voters are physically challenged, the poll panel has arranged vehicles to ferry them for voting from their homes and drop them back.

In all, 31 candidates are in the fray, including five from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), three from the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and two from the Congress and 21 others as Independents or from regional outfits.

BJP’s state unit President B.S. Yeddyurappa’s son B.Y. Raghavendra, who is contesting from Shimoga Lok Sabha seat, was among the early voters in the constituency along with his father.

JD-S candidate for Ramanagara Anitha Kumaraswamy, the wife of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, was seen visiting polling booths in the constituency to ensure polling was taking place smoothly.

Vote counting of all the five constituencies will take place on November 6.

MP CM’s kin joins Congress

November 3, 2018 by Nasheman

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s brother-in-law Sanjay Singh Masani on Saturday joined the Congress ahead of the Assembly elections in the central state.

Brother of Chouhan’s wife Sadhana, Masani, was formally inducted into the party in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath here.

Masani, was said to be peeved at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for denying him a ticket for the Assembly polls. Reportedly, he wanted to contest from Waraseoni in Balaghat district from where the BJP has fielded sitting MLA Yogendra Nirmal.

“BJP is now all about dynasty and nepotism. Most of the candidates fielded by BJP are sons and daughters of MLAs or MPs. Those who work for the party are being neglected for the sake of dynasty politics,” he said.

Masani, flayed the Chouhan-led BJP government in the state and said it was time for the Congress to come to power in Madhya Pradesh.

“Rising unemployment and lack of industry are two major problems in the state and the Chouhan government has done nothing all these years,” he added.

The 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly will have a single phase polling on November 28.

Pakistan: Blasphemy protests called off after government deal

November 3, 2018 by Nasheman

Pakistan’s far-right Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party has called off protests against the acquittal of a Christian woman accused of blasphemy which have rocked the Muslim-majority South Asian democracy in recent days.

TLP on Friday signed an agreement with the Pakistani government to end the demonstrations, which also involved a number of other religious parties, party spokesperson Zubair Kasuri told Al Jazeera by telephone from Lahore.

According to Kasuri, protesters will be granted legal amnesty under the terms of the deal and Aasia Bibi – the 53-year-old Christian woman at the centre of this week’s furore – will be placed on Pakistan’s Exit Control List.

This means she is effectively barred from leaving the country.

Protests continue for third day after Aasia Bibi’s acquittal

The agreement comes after three days of protests sparked by the landmark acquittal of Bibi byPakistan’s Supreme Court on Wednesday.

In its judgement, the court declared there were “glaring and stark” contradictions in the case against her.

The original complainant in the case, Muhammad Salim, has filed a review petition against the top court’s verdict, Kasuri said.

But according to Pakistani law, the grounds for review petitions are extremely narrow and such appeals are seldom upheld, meaning the court’s acquittal of Bibi is likely to stand.

Bibi had been on death row for eight years following her arrest in the central Pakistani village of Ithan Wali over an argument with two Muslim women, who refused to drink water from the same vessel as her due to her religion.

The women accused her of having insulted Islam’s Prophet Muhammad during the altercation, a charge Bibi has consistently denied.

Blasphemy is a sensitive subject in Pakistan, where the country’s strict laws prescribe a mandatory death penalty for some forms of the crime.

Increasingly, blasphemy allegations have led to murders and mob lynchings, with at least 74 people killed in such violence since 1990, acccording to media tally.

Akshay Kumar, along with entire cast of Housefull 4, Kriti Sanon, Bobby Deol, Riteish Deshmukh, Pooja Hegde & Kriti Kharbanda, have already completed 2 schedules of the film, 1 each in London & Rajasthan. The team kicked off their 3rd schedule in Mumbai a few days ago. The makers have spent a whopping amount to build the grand sets, where they will shoot the reincarnation scenes. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala is leaving no stone unturned to make Housefull 4 a visual delight. The 2 sets that have been erected at Chitrakoot Ground & Vrindavan Studio have cost him around `20 crore. The film’s overall budget is a sum total of the money that he spent on the other 3 movies in the franchise. Given that the period sequences, which involve a lot of VFX, are yet to be shot there, the art direction team has paid attention to the intricate details. “The set gives you a feel of the yesteryear era, which was seen in Baahubali franchise. There’s the king’s darbar which has pillars that are as high as 36 feet, long pathways & marble flooring. There are precious stones embedded on the throne & the pillars have fine detailing. Sajid gave a clear vision to production designers, Subrata Chakraborty & Amit Ray, who ensured that the sets depicted the period’s grandeur. The team has strict security measures in place. The makers don’t want the pictures to be leaked because they want to reveal it closer to the film’s promo launch. So, nobody is allowed to carry eve their phones on the sets, as a precautionary measure.

‘Is that bird dropping?’, Divya Spandana’s tweet on PM Modi sparks controversy

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

“Is that bird dropping?”, read the tweet from the chief of Congress’ social media and digital communications, Divya Spandana. The question was accompanied by a photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wearing a white kurta, at the foot of the newly inaugurated statue of Sardar Patel.

The question incited a sharp response from Twitter users and BJP members in particular who questioned her cryptic tweet and accused her of likening the Prime Minister to bird dropping.
The BJP retorted by saying that “it is the values of the Congress that are dropping.”
Divya later retweeted a message that claimed that her tweet was referring to actual bird droppings. However, she refused to clarify on what she meant by the tweet and appeared to distance the tweet from the Congress party by claiming that it was her views.
While Divya’s tweet has been termed a new low in political discourse by Twitter users, she has had to endure tweets by Twitter users who posted photographs of Divya with distasteful comments.

This is not the first time that one of Divya’s tweets has become a controversy. In September, she was booked for sedition by Lucknow Police for referring to PM Modi as ‘a thief’ in a tweet.

She had tweeted a photoshopped photograph of PM Modi painting the word ‘chor’ on his wax statue with the hashtag “Chor PM Chup Hai”.

Divya took charge of the Congress’ social media cell a year ago to ramp up the party’s fledgling social media presence. She has courted controversy on several occasions for her criticism of the BJP, particularly Prime Minister Modi.

Amritsar train tragedy: Sidhu fails to appear before inquiry commission

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

Punjab Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday failed to appear before the one-man commission conducting an inquiry into the Amritsar train tragedy in which 60 people were killed on October 19.

Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur, who was also summoned by the commission, however, appeared on Friday and gave her statement.

Sidhu, who was present in Amritsar on Friday, later held a press conference and justified his absence.

“I wrote to him (probe commissioner) that I was not in Punjab from October 16-20. So there are no inputs that can actually add to your proceedings,” Sidhu told the media.

Senior IAS officer B. Purushartha, who is conducting the magisterial inquiry in Amritsar, had asked the Sidhu couple to appear before the commission on November 2.

Regarding Sidhu not appearing before the inquiry commission, Navjot Kaur told the media after appearing before the commission at the Improvement Trust building that “He is at home only. He had a programme to distribute cheques (to families of victims of the train tragedy). He has sent whatever statement he wanted to make (to the commission).”

Navjot Kaur, a former legislator and ex chief parliamentary secretary, was the chief guest at the Dussehra festival near Joda Phatak when the DMU (diesel multiple unit) train crushed those standing on the railway tracks.

Sixty people lost their lives and an equal number were injured in the train tragedy.

Opposition leaders and locals alleged that Navjot Kaur fled the scene after the train mowed down the people.

There are allegations that the event was organised without mandatory permissions, which had to be given by the municipal corporation which falls under the local government department headed by Sidhu.

The main organiser of the event, Saurabh Madan Mithoo, is a close political aide of the Sidhu couple.

Mithoo, his family members and other organisers were questioned by the inquiry commission in Amritsar, over 250 km from here, on Tuesday for over four hours.

The commission has been asked to submit its report within four weeks.

BJP asks EC to postpone Ramanagara bye-poll

November 2, 2018 by Nasheman

State Election Commission sources, however, told media it is highly unlikely that the poll would be countermanded.

The BJP in Karnataka, which was stumped on Thursday by the withdrawal of its candidate in the Ramanagara Assembly bye-poll just two days ahead of the election, has now sought the polling to be postponed in the seat. To this effect, its leader Chi Na Ramu, the party’s National General Secretary of SC Morcha, wrote to the Election Commission of India. The party also sought action against its candidate L Chandrashekar, son of Congress MLC CM Lingappa.

However, a top state Election Commission officer told media it is highly unlikely that the poll would be countermanded.

“We have not received any instructions from ECI. I don’t think there is a chance of elections being countermanded. The withdrawal from polls by a candidate after the notified date of withdrawal (October 20) is unofficial. His (Chandrashekar’s) name and symbols will be in the EVMs. His party had supported till the last day of withdrawal of candidature and that is why his name is already in the ballot,” the officer told media.

Other than Ramanagara, bye-polls will be held at Assembly segment of Jamakhandi and three Lok Sabha segments – Shimoga, Ballari and Mandya on Saturday as a precursor of sorts to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The results will be declared on November 6. The Congress-JD(S) have decided to put up a united front against the BJP after forming a post-poll alliance in May.

On Thursday, in a major embarrassment for the opposition party in the state, Chandrashekar retired from the elections in an unprecedented move and announced that he is rejoining the Congress. “I take back my nomination and I support Congress-JDS candidate Anita Kumaraswamy,” Chandrashekar stated in a letter. He said the “disinterest” shown by BJP’s state president BS Yeddyurappa for campaigning in the constituency forced him to quit.

The bye-poll in this seat was necessitated as Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy won both the seats of Ramanagara and Channapatna in the May state polls, but chose to vacate this seat. Chandrashekar was the BJP’s choice against JD(S)’s Anitha Kumaraswamy, the wife of the CM. The Congress has decided to lend support to the JD(S) as part of the continuing alliance since the Assembly elections.

Incidentally, CM HD Kumaraswamy has won for the fourth straight time from Ramanagara since 2004. According to poll analysts, with the Congress and JD(S) joining hands, it was realistically impossible for the BJP to manage a victory despite the rivalry between the grassroot workers of the JD(S) and Congress.
