Sachin exits Kerala Blasters

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has ended his association with Kerala Blasters Football Club (KBFC), the Indian Super League (ISL) outfit said in a statement on Sunday.

“Sachin has been a great support and we thank him for his immense contribution to KBFC. He will forever be a member of the Yellow Army. As it has been, we will continue to uphold and take forward, the spirit of the sport, spirit of the fans and the spirit of Kerala,” the statement said.

“The existing 80 per cent Ashareholders of KBFC comprising of IQuest, Chiranjeevi and Allu Arvind have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Sachin Tendulkar’s 20 per cent stake in the club,” it added.

“Any other news regarding the shareholding is purely speculative in nature.”

For the past two days, a section of the media had speculated that hat UAE billionaire businessman and Keralite M.A. Yusuf Ali has bought Sachin’s stake.

Sachin has been the face of the franchise since its first edition in 2014 and it was along with the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, he held a press conference in the state secretariat announcing the name of the club.

Rohingya return must be safe, sustainable: Indian envoy

Rohingya refugees’ return to Myanmar’s Rakhine state should be safe, speedy and sustainable, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Monday.

In his first visit to Bangladesh’s Kutupalong refugee camp, inhabited mostly by Rohingya Muslims, Shringla said India was focussing on three “Ss” to address the Rohingya crisis, bdnews24.com reported.

Bangladesh is currently providing shelter to over 1 million Rohingyas who fled “ethnic cleansing” in the Rakhine state.

The High Commissioner handed over relief materials to Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzel Hussain Chowdhury Maya for Rohingyas refugees living in Bangladesh.

Over 1.1 million litres of super kerosene oil and 20,000 kerosene multi wick stoves were handed over in the third phase of humanitarian assistance from the Indian government to Bangladesh, reports say.

The Bangladeshi Minister thanked India for its fuel support and said the latest round of Indian aid will help over 20,000 families for five months.

“Fuel is a big problem and it’s a complex issue. We sought support from India and they responded very positively. We thank them for this support,” said Maya.

The Rohingya exodus from Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh began in August 2017 after a crackdown by the Myanmarese military that the UN likened to “ethnic cleansing with signs of genocide through killings, rapes and the razing of houses that year”.

But the Myanmar government says it was fighting militants from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army and was not targeting civilians.

In September 2017, the Indian government under “Operation Insaniyat” extended the first phase of humanitarian assistance comprising of 981 tonnes of relief supplies.

The relief material consisted of family packs of rice, pulses, sugar, salt, cooking oil, tea, ready-to-eat noodles, biscuits and mosquito nets.

In May 2018, 373 tonnes of relief materials, including 104 tonnes of milk powder, 102 tonnes of dried fish, 61 tonnes of baby food, 50,000 raincoats and 50,000 pairs of gum boots for the rainy season were handed over in Chattogram.

Earlier, the Myanmar government agreed to a deal with Bangladesh to repatriate refugees, but few have returned. The Rohingya leaders say they would not go back unless they were guaranteed safety.

Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi has faced international outrage for not condemning the Army’s actions in Rakhine state.

A predominantly Buddhist country, Myanmar denies Rohingyas citizenship. The government even excluded them from the 2014 census and refused to recognize them as a people.

Approach HC for CBI probe into assault cases, SC tells Agnivesh

The Supreme Court on Monday asked social activist Swami Agnivesh to approach the High Court for a probe by the CBI or the NIA into attacks on him in Jharkhand and Delhi.

A bench of Justice S.A. Bobde and Justice L. Nageswara Rao also asked the social activist to approach the competent authority in the central government for security.

“We can’t prevent threats to ourselves, how can we prevent these to you? People threat us also,” the bench said when counsel Mehmood Pracha sought prevention of attacks on his client.

Pracha said that Agnivesh had been attacked twice — first in Jharkhand and then in Delhi — and that his safety should be ensured.

He urged the two FIRs be clubbed and the investigation be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation or the National Investigation Agency.

The counsel contended that Agnivesh doesn’t expect a fair police investigation and hence the probe should be transferred to the CBI.

The court replied: “How can it be a part of CBI jurisdiction? How can we assume that there won’t be a fair investigation?”

Agnivesh, 79, was abused and assaulted on July 17 in Jharkhand’s Pakur by a mob which, he claimed, comprised members of a BJP-affiliated youth group.

He was also shown black flags for making alleged anti-Hindu remarks earlier and provoking the tribals.

On August 17, Agnivesh was again abused and thrashed outside the BJP headquarters in Delhi when he went there to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose body was lying in state for the people to pay homage.

Indian women boxers shine at Turkish event

 Indian women pugilists put up a stellar display at the 32nd Ahmet Comert boxing tournament here, sweeping seven medals in as many categories, including three golds, two silver and two bronze.

While Mary Kom won the gold and the junior women boxers created history winning 13 medals in Poland, the Indians once again established themselves as a boxing powerhouse with a splendid medal haul.

Monika, Bhagyabati Kachari and Simranjeet confirmed the yellow metal, while Pinki Jangra and Meena Kumari settled for silver.

In the first final of the afternoon, Monika got the better of Turkish pugilist Ayse Cagirir in the 48 kg category, securing a unanimous 5-0 win.

Following it up in the 81kg category was 2012 Asian Championship bronze medalist Bhagyabati Kacahri who not only put up a dominant display but exhibited technical precision and finesse to secure the gold, forcing Selma Karakoyun to a 0:5 submission. Following her sublime display, she also received the award for the most scientific boxer at the event.

Pinki Rani, however, suffered an unfortunate result, being downed by yet another Turkish opponent, Busenaz Cakiroglu, in a 1-4 verdict and had to settle for a silver. Meena Kumari too suffered a similar fate in the 54 kg category against Romania’s Maria Nechita. One of the most enthralling bouts on the final day, Meena lost by a narrow margin with a split 2-3 decision.

Capping off the tournament in style, Simranjeet showed strong character to win the gold in the 64kg category. Dubbed as an underdog ahead of the bout, she beat the odds and looked on top of her game, eclipsing past Turkey’s Sema Caliskan in a unanimous 5-0 decision to secure the third gold for India.

Congress-JD(S) coalition government 100 per cent safe

AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal on Sunday said there is no threat to the Congress-JD(S) coalition government and it will complete the full five-year term.

Speaking to media persons after meeting former chief minister Siddaramaiah, Venugopal accused the BJP of trying to destabilise the government. “The government is 100 per cent safe. We have full faith in our MLAs and none of them will quit the party,” he said and accused the BJP of trying to poach his party MLAs.

KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao said, “BJP leaders are indulging in dirty politics and we will expose them. We have even filed a complaint with the Income Tax department.”The BJP, however, has rubbished the allegations and stated that it has nothing to do with the crisis in Congress.

Rao said all Congress MLAs are with the party. “All MLAs, including those from Ballari district, are in touch and there is no need to call them for meetings again and again,” he said, adding that the legislative party meeting will be called ahead of next month’s legislative council elections. The party had recently convened a meeting of MLAs from Ballari after they expressed displeasure over not being included in the ministry.

Rao said even in BBMP Mayor’s election, BJP is trying to come to power by getting support from independent members in the council. The mayoral and deputy mayoral elections are scheduled in the last week of this month and Congress-JD(S) are in power in BBMP with support from independent members.

Cops arrest three, including main accused : Rewari gangrape

Four days after a CBSE topper from Haryana’s Rewari district was gang-raped, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police on Sunday arrested three persons, including one of the prime accused. SIT head Nazneen Bhasin, who is Superintendent of Police of Nuh district, identified the three as Nishu, Dr Sanjeev and Deendayal.

“It was Nishu who had planned the crime. After he and two others gang-raped the girl in a tubewell room owned by Deendayal, Nishu called Dr Sanjeev of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital to the tubewell to check her health. Dr Sanjeev was fully aware of the crime. Yet, he did not alert the police,’’ revealed Bhasin. “The link between Nishu and Sanjeev was established through mobile forensics,” she added.

During interrogation, Deendayal revealed that Nishu, army man Pankaj and Manish had taken his tubewell room’s key on Thursday, the day they committed the crime.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family refused to take a cheque of `2 lakh offered by Chief Judicial Magistrate Vivek Yadav under the Haryana Victim Compensation Scheme, 2013. Her mother said she wanted justice, not money.

The 19-year-old woman, a school topper hailing from Rewari who was even felicitated by the government, was abducted from a bus stop in Kanina town in neighbouring Mahendragarh district on Wednesday when on way to a coaching class, police said.

She was allegedly drugged and gang-raped at a room adjoining a tubewell in a field, they said.

Khattar, who had an event scheduled in Jalandhar in Punjab, cut short his visit and reached Chandigarh this afternoon, officials said.

Khattar summoned the Director General of Police (DGP) to review progress in the investigation.

The chief minister directed DGP Sandhu to ensure the arrest of all the accused at the earliest, they said.

Rewari Superintendent of Police Rajesh Duggal, who was accused of failing to ensure prompt action, was moved out and will be replaced by SP, chief minister’s security, Rahul Sharma, officials said.

Duggal will now lead a battalion of the Haryana Armed Police (HAP) in Hisar, they said.

The owner of the property where the crime took place, Deendayal, who was among those arrested, told police that the three key accused had taken the key to the room from him on the day of the incident.

The police alleged Deendayal may have known about the crime, but did not report it.

Meanwhile, raids continued in Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and other states to nab the two absconding key accused, a senior official, part of the investigation, said.

Pakistan must decide how to live peacefully with neighbours: Rajnath

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that he hopes the new government in Pakistan will bring about positive changes in its approach to seek peace with neighbours.

Addressing the media at the BSF headquarters in Paloura area of Jammu district, he said: “Pakistan has its own nature and we cannot change their nature. They will have to do it.

“Whatever initiatives India could take, we have taken. The Prime Minister broke protocol to visit Pakistan. I pray to God the new government in Pakistan understands how good relations are built with neighbours.”

Rajnath Singh said there were challenges which the nation faced.

“Whether it is the Naxal violence or terrorism in J&K, our security forces are dealing with this effectively. The Army, CRPF and state police are working here in absolute coordination.”

Asked about the boycott of municipal and panchayat polls by the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party, he said: “I appeal to these parties to take part in these elections because this is the only way to establish direct contact with the people.”

The Minister inaugurated two smart border fencing pilot projects on the international border in Jammu on Monday under the comprehensive integrated border management system (CIBMS) programme.

He told the media: “When I visited Israel, I saw this system there and immediately after that we started work on this project.

“Based on the feedback, the system will be foolproof. I have launched two such pilot projects here. We will launch a similar 60 km long pilot project in Assam.”

Widespread rain to lash Bengaluru till Thursday

Light to moderate widespread rain will lash the southern city of Bengaluru till Thursday, an official from Karnataka’s weather monitoring centre said on Monday.

As of Monday morning 8.30 a.m., parts of Bengaluru received maximum rainfall measuring up to 14.1 cm and an average rainfall of 3 cm across the Bengaluru Urban district, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) said.

“Due to low pressure created in the Bay of Bengal, the city is expected to continue to receive light to moderate rain over the next few days,” KSNDMC Director, G.S. Srinivasa Reddy, told IANS here.

The south interior districts of the state, including Mysuru and Chamarajanagar also received moderate rain over the past 24 hours.

“Monsoon activity is likely to increase in the north interior districts of Kalaburagi, Bidar and Raichur,” Reddy added.

The state capital, however, is on alert and is prepared to act in case the intensity of the rain increases, an official said.

“We have already cleared out many of the storm water drains across the city to prevent flash floods in any region, in case of heavy rain,” the city’s civic body spokesman, L. Suresh, told IANS.

On August 15 last year, Bengaluru received its heaviest downpour in a century measuring up to 18 cm within a span of three hours, which wreaked havoc across the city, crippling normal life, flooding hundreds of roads and houses.

Ronit Roy honoured to be part of ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’

Actor Ronit Roy will be seen featuring in the upcoming film “Thugs Of Hindostan”. He says he is honoured to be a small part of the film.

“Wow! I am so honoured to be a small part of this magnum opus,” Ronit tweeted on Monday morning.

The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh. It is slated to hit the screens on November 8.

This will be the second time Ronit will be seen working with Amitabh. The two have previously worked in the film “Sarkar 3”.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who directed Katrina and Aamir in “Dhoom: 3”. “Thugs Of Hindostan” is an adaptation of the 1839 novel “Confessions of a Thug”.
